Detroit Lions @ New Oreans Saints: Game Predictions
They're baaaaaaaaack. Everyone's favorite day of the regular season...Prediction Friday!
Most of you guys probably already know how this works but for all of our newcomers, I'll review the rules again. Listen up.
Every week before a Saints game, everyone makes three predictions about that game. They can be any predictions you want. You can guess that Drew Brees will throw for over 400 yards or you can guess that Sedrick Ellis will be fined by the league for excessive Pee-Wee Herman dancing following a five sack performance. It doesn't matter. Put your three predictions in the body of your comment, NOT the subject heading.
I know what you're thinking. You'll just guess silly things you can't possibly get incorrect like, "Someone will get tackled" or "After the game, there will be a winner and a loser." If you wan't to do that, be my guest, but I'm pretty sure you will be ridiculed. You're call.
It's also become tradition to make a score prediction as well. That's a freebie you get and it doesn't count against your three predictions. A good score prediction can only help you, not hurt you. Type that as the subject heading of your comment. If you need an example of how this works, check out the prediction thread the last time the Saints played the Lions.
That about covers it. So without further ado, I leave it to you guys. Can't wait to hear them. Good luck.

My predictions
Jeremy Shockey will score the first TD of the game/season/his Saints career
Drew will have 400+ yard
Saints will be up 21-0 in the first half.
I predict
That Drew Brees will single-handedly crash fantasy football live scoring sites because the programmers didn’t allow for that many points.

>A significant injury will be incurred by a high profile player, spoiling the day for one side.
>Bell and Bush split touches; Bush shines, Bell is a disappointment.
>Payton goes 50% on officiating challenges, causing renewed short term grumbling amongst fans and followers, until they look at the score again.
Saints, 38-9
Might mean somethin' to you
It ain't nothin' to me
Saints 38- Lions 13
Mike Bell gets 2 rush TDs.
Jon Vilma gets first turnover of year – INT or fumble recovery.
Colston catches Drew’s first TD pass of year.
Saints 24, Lions 13
The game will be tied at half time.
Matt Stafford will not throw an INT or a TD.
Lance Moore will have more receiving yards than Calvin Johnson.

1) +3 turnover margin for the who dats
2) Brunell comes out for a series in the 4th
3) Megatron makes a great leaping one handed catch, and has it called back for illegal formation

NOS-31 DET-17
1) Stafford throws around 300 yards, 1TD/1Int
2) Pettigrew is the Lions’ top receiver.
3) Carney misses a meaningless field goal, gets replaced on Tuesday.
Saints 31, Lions 10
> Smith and Grant each have 1.5 sacks and the team has 6 total.
> Moorstead doesn’t muff any punts; in fact, the Saints only punt once, and it’s downed inside the 10.
> The Saints’ history of futility (including the 1-win season) is mentioned 5 times during the game, sparking at least one comparison of Stafford to Archie Manning.
"Moorstead doesn’t muff any punts"
sounds like a safe bet.

Detroit will score first.

Saints 42 - Lions 21
1. Reggie has 103 yds rushing, 107 receiving
2. Vilma will force a fumble when he sacks Stafford on the Lions’ first possession.
3. Rod Harper returns a KO for a TD to start the game.
1) Oh man, after Hap’s video I got no choice on this one. Saints get another opening-day shutout. We’re due.
2) Reggie gets a hat trick. Don’t care how, he’ just gets at least three TDs. (Can you guess he’s on my fantasy team?)
3) Stafford actually looks pretty good, including at least one “acheman”-esque escape from a sack. It’s still a rude “welcome to the NFL” day for him.
Saints 35 Detroit 17
1…..Pierre Thomas will rush for 117 yards with 2 touchdowns
2…..Reggie Bush will not get hurt
3…..Drew Brees will throw 1 interception

2. Mike Bell (126 yards) gets more rushing yardage than Reggie Bush.

- This is a game decided by defense. Saints’ D will shine, 2 INTs, 3 FF’s/1 recovery. 4 sacks (2 by Ellis, 1 by McCray, 1 by Shanle -yes I just typed that). Lions D, however, will give us fits. Honestly, don’t underestimate these guys. I see a close game.
- Brees throws 3 TDs (one to Shockey, one deep one to Meachem, and a screen pass to Bush) and has over 300 yards with 1 INT. He gets sacked once.
- Lions punt away from Bush every time. KR Rod Harper struggles, his long being 24 yards.
Summary: a tough game, honestly. Lots of kinks to be worked out. Saints D will be the highlight. Game-planning for Philly will be tougher. And in Week 2, Detroit gets their 1st Win in ages when they upset the Vikings at home!

1. Payton loses a challenge
2. Special Teams is awful
3. Anthony Hargrove sacks QB and causes fumble as part of 4 TO’s against lions
Saints 35 - Lions 14
Firstly, want to mention the elephant in the room….injuries (and this year suspensions). Killed us last year and here they come again.
Jammal Brown, left tackle, most important man on the line, All-Pro, protector of Drew’s backside, out.
Pierre Thomas, starting running back, replacement for Saints greatest runner of all times, out.
Charles Grant and Will Smith, potentially both starting defense ends, the theoretical keys to our pass rush and thus our defense, out.
Mark Simoneau 4th linebacker, out.
Billy Miller, 2nd tight end, out.
Jeremy Shockey, 1st tight end, probable.
This is not a good way for our season to start. That doesn’t even count some of the guys on IR and guys playing mildly hurt (Usama Young) let alone our new and improved field goal kicker who can actually hit the ball over 40 yards.
Anyway, on to the game….
1 Drew will pass for 300 yards with 3 TDs (Shockey, Henderson and Moore)
2 Bobby McCray, our only DE with any speed, will get 2 sacks
3 Tracy Porter will cause a fumble by Stafford on a blitz

Saints 45 - Lions 24
Reggie Bush takes his first handoff of the regular season to the house (72 yard TD run) — And the Dome fans rejoice by beating the hell out of the Aluminum siding in cheap seats.
Matthew Stafford throws a pick six to Jabari Greer on the ensuing series.
Charles Grant and Will Smith have career days . . . then get suspended when they are most needed.
Bonus – The Saints actually convert some 3 and 1s by running the ball.
The people who say, "Winning isn't everything," don't win very often.
Lions fan here
Also a closet Saints fan, I’m really pulling for you guys to make a playoff run
> Brees will pick apart the Lions’s secondary, not that it’s particularly bad, Brees simply does it to everyone. He’ll have a killer game week 1.
> Bush is very successful on screens and dump-offs, and has himself a nice 90yd game. w/ 2 TDs
> The Saint’s secondary effectively restricts Matthew Stafford from having a great game, their looks are frustrating for the rookie QB.
> Stafford will throw 1 interception (possible pick 6), but otherwise have a reasonably solid outing, nothing groundbreaking, just solid.
> Saints will hold back a bit on their defensive schemes and coverages. No need to divulge everything in Gregg Williams’s bag just yet
> Calvin Johnson emerges with an excellent game, getting or coming close to 200 yds receiving and 1 TD(s).
> Kevin Smith has a decent game running the ball around 90 yds with 1 rushing TD
> Lions will make it a game, it will be within one touchdown by halftime, but the Saints end up pulling away.
Final Score: Saints: 34 Lions: 20
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
Btw
Bush’s yards are not all purpose, those are rushing yards. All purpose will be closer to 150
We didn't lose the games, we just ran out of time -- Bobby Layne
I think that's pretty fair-minded
A lot of people think we’re playing last year’s team. Uh uh. This is going to be a real fight.
I think you’re probably right on just about all counts…except I don’t think Johnson will get open that much. The Saints are pretty good at stopping the run (so far), and Johnson is your only other real weapon. I don’t think Williams is going to forget about him.
I predicted 34-10, but 34-20 wouldn’t surprise me a bit.
"Tell all the killjoys to pound sand." -- Ralph Malbrough
34-10 is reasonable
The Johnson prediction stems from a preseason in which Staff and Johnson really seemed to form a connection. When you look at the season he had last year and consider he had Dan Orlovsky throwing to him for most of it, and you have to believe with a good QB Johnson can cement himself as one of the top 5 receivers in the league. He’s a physical freak and has no discernible weaknesses. Pile on the fact that he and every other Lions player is eager to shed away that 0-16 season and come out strong, and it equates to a great performance. The Lions may have the competitive edge over the Saints because we all know they’re dying for a win.

How dangerous is it to run contrary to popular opinion?
Detroit 34 – Orleans 17
1. The first prediction is obvious and conveys the rarest of opinions: Lions win, solidly. Predicting this years Lions-Saints outcome based upon last years results is like going up to Larry Foote, Julian Peterson or any of the other 9 starters on the defense and blaming them to their face for last years result. Better duck fast.
2. Matthew Stafford (one sack) shines with over 300 yards passing. (Bonus) Detroits running game produces almost 200 yards.
3. Drew Brees is sacked four times and picked off twice in the shocker that introduces the Detroit Lions to the NFL.
