1. Shockey continues to make hay while the sun shines (4+ catches, 40+ yards) and has at least one play when he lays some wood on an attempted tackler (blocking for a teammate who’s not in the backfield counts so long as he violently knocks the guy over).

2. Both defenses make a fair number of good plays. Both have at least one RB tackle for loss and at least one sack. Total picks between the two is at least three.

3. Iggles fans regret their merciless treatment of McNabb after the game. This can be one of two ways. Kolb plays most/all of the game and looks really bad again (2+ picks, <60% completion), or McNabb plays through the pain and looks at least decent (<3 picks, 2+ TDs counting goal-to-go handoffs, >40% completion rate, >200 yards).

Bonus: Our LB crew continues to play well and coldpizza throws up in his mouth at having to praise Lunch Pale’s play afterward.

Not true. Almost every single hardcore Eagles fan I know loves McNabb. The whole Philly-hates-McNabb thing is really only a small, albeit loud portion of Eagles fans who are easily manipulated by local sports radio.

Seriously though, you would be hard-pressed to find a single McNabb hater on our website. It’s just a storyline that the media loves to feed on because that’s what they do. Don’t get me wrong, there are people in Philly that hate McNabb, but those people tend to know absolutely nothing about football.

Eagles 33, Saints 19

The Saints give LT Jermon Bushrod a ton of extra help against RDE Trent Cole, and the Eagles rotation of LDE’s feast on one-on-one matchups against Jonathan Stinchcomb all day. The Eagles continue to force turnovers – Brees is picked off twice (by Quintin Mikell and Omar Gaither), and he loses a fumble on a Chris Clemons sack.

The Eagles offense has a nice balanced attack, mainly due to the Saints’ weak defense. Brent Celek has a huge day, as Scott Shanle and Scott Fujita get burnt all afternoon.

Oops, didn't put that in 3 bulletpoint form...

1. Eagles LDE’s feast all day on Jonathan Stinchcomb, as they get constant pressure on Brees all day.
2. The Eagles intercept Drew Brees twice and recover a Brees fumble
3. Big day for Brent Celek, as he exploits the Saints weak linebackers.

Check this out

I was lurking over on Bleeding Green Nation, and the poster known as ZorkNemesis has this to say:

The Saints are going to destroy us. Kolb is going to have to take his lumps. The Saints know the secret to defeating JJ/McDermott’s defense; dinking and dunking. Jeremy Shockey and Lance Moore will likely lead the team in receptions and the ToP will be a vast advantage to the Saints.

I have it as 34-20 Saints. What I hope for is that no one on the Eagles gets injured in this game, a game which by all accounts is pretty futile if Kolb starts. Brees can kill any defense; Kolb would probably struggle against a Pac 10 defense.

Following the accusation that he wasn’t a real Iggles fan, he replied

Are YOU an Eagles fan? Did you watch our defense last year? You can defeat the blitz with quick tosses, slants, and looking for the TE. Even with Stewart Bradley in the lineup, the Cardinals had an answer for our blitz on every play. While Fitzgerald had 159 yards in that game, most of it came on one reception. We could not stop them on third down.

High powered offenses will be successful against us because there will always be free receivers underneath. Our LB coverage is terrible. They are excellent against the run, but will let just about any WR run behind them. Our defense is strong but it has a weakness and that weakness can be exploited by a team like this, and it will.

Being an Eagles fan doesn’t mean calling every other team a joke and expecting us to go 16-0 and score 50 points a game. I don’t know how anyone expects us to win this week. I don’t even know why I gave the Eagles 20 points in my projection.. with Kolb under center the Eagles have scored a grand total of 0 points.

And he continued

In addition I think you guys are way too reactionary. Before the season started everyone thought our defense was going to be terrible and our offensive line was going to be pathetic, and now everyone thinks that we’re invincible because of one game. Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe the Panthers are not a great team this year? They have injuries, they have a confused QB, they have aging receivers. That team has alternated between 11-5 and 5-11 every season. Look at their season by season records this decade: 2000 – 7-9, 2001 – 1-15, 2002 – 7-9, 2003 – 11-5, 2004 – 7-9, 2005 – 11-5, 2006 – 8-8, 2007 – 7-9. They have not had back to back winning seasons in the short history of their franchise.

I don’t know why you guys think that that game can be applied to just any game. The Panthers’ success depends on their ability to run the ball, and we have a great rushing defense. The Saints succeed by slinging the ball all over the field, and it’s not just one guy, they spread it around. 8 different people caught a pass from Brees last week. They are not some one dimensional team like the Panthers. Yes, the Panthers have Steve Smith, but Steve Smith can only do what he does when the playaction works. The Saints DONT NEED to run the ball to win games. They could take every snap from shotgun and probably still score a lot of points.

I don’t think I’m being defeatist, I’m just not expecting Kevin fucking Kolb to keep up with Drew Brees. If Kolb even gets us to 200 yards of offense I’ll be amazed.

I hereby nominate ZorkNemesis as Eagles Fan Most Likely To Win the CSC Prediction Contest.

by jful on Sep 18, 2009 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I love how you’re labeled as a homer and unreasonable if you believe that your home team will win every game. It’s a game. It’s not politics.

Eagles Win: 24-21

1. Drew Brees is sacked 3 times, gives 1 INT and throws 2 TDs.
2. Westbrook – 6 catches, 150 all purpose yards, 1 TD
3. Kolb is sacked once, goes 15-25, 1 TD
4. ST gives us great position all day, Jackson returns a punt for a TD
5. Akers seals the deal late in the 4th quarter with a 36 yd field goal.

It’s not being a homer to believe in your team. And if the guy dislikes the Eagles so much, he should be a fan of another team. I don’t have to have realistic expectations of my football team because it’s a just a game. Period.

by thwalls on Sep 18, 2009 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

that's the definition

of a homer. you said you don’t like being labeled unreasonable, but then you say as a fan of a team you don’t need to be realistic—don’t you see how that sort of taints any opinions you choose to share? i think there’s a balance between “believing” in your team and trying to be analytical about the sport.

by Jee on Sep 18, 2009 4:49 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Garcia won’t even step on the field unless Kolb gets injured or plays the worst game in NFL history.

I know he played in Philly before and has mastered the West Coast Offense, but you can’t practice with a team for a week and immediately remember all the wrinkles and inner-workings of an offensive playbook. Not to mention he has never thrown to guys like DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek, or Jeremy Maclin. In Reid’s mind, Garcia is probably a last resort option just in case Kolb goes down.

For all the reasons above, I think Kolb’s leash is fairly long for this week. He has plenty of room to mess up, which is potentially good for you guys.

The thing is, I don’t think Kolb will have a bad week. I think he will have a game similar to the one Aaron Rodgers had last week – a tight grind-out game with some fireworks here and there. Most people forget the two scenarios where Kolb has entered a game before: A horrible blowout at the hands of the Ravens following the infamous McNabb benching, and a more pleasant blowout against the Panthers where Reid safely hesitated to pull the trigger. My point is, no one has seen him prepare for an opponent for an entire week or practice with the starters to this day, or play a meaningful game for the entire first half. He always gets thrown in after the pot has been stirred, whatever the means.

I could easily be wrong about Kolb, but I think most people in Philly are jumping down his throat too soon. He could fail miserably, but there is a chance he could light it up on Sunday.

I also am aware that 99% of you guys probably don’t care about our backup QB situation, and that this post is ridiculously long, but this is what I do when I’m bored, so yeah sorry about that.

Air vs Ground. Saints 31 Eagles 24

1. Brees has 3 or more TDs and 1 or less picks.
2. Bell gets less than 60 yards rushing while Reggie has 125+ all purpose yards including at least 1 TD.
3. Kolb throws for 2 or more picks with at least 1 sack.
Bonus: Westbrook has over 100 all purpose yards and 2 TDs.

This should be one of the better games this week. The Saints will live through the air mostly. Bush will see more touches after Bell gets shut down. Comes down to the 4th quarter. Saints have the lead going into the 4th quarter 31-21. Saints let up a big play to Westbrook but can’t capitilize and settles for the FG. Eagles march into Saints territory and Kolb coughs up the ball sealing the win for the Saints. The Saints D will continue to be told that it’s not good because Kolb was their QB. It’s a very winnable game for each team. Wild card player for the game: Kolb-play smart

Keys to the game(imo):
Saints-Score early, hopefully at least once in first 2 possesions, to get the momentum and stop Westbrook on dropoff passes.
Eagles-Limit the turnovers on offense and get pressure on Brees, throwing him off rhythm.

Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

Saints 24 - Eagles 28

1. Saints D gets 2 sacks and 2 turnovers.

2. Brees throws between 260 and 280 yards with 2 TD’s and 2 picks. Gets sacked once.

3. Saints are held to under 80 rushing yards.

I don’t even like typing it but we are in Philly. If we were in the Dome I’d feel a lot more confident but we weren’t that good on the road last year.

Prediction: Eagles lose by 10

1. Kolb throws at least 2 INTs and no more than 1 TD. Eagles fans will try to use this as proof that once their real QB gets back no on will beat them.
2. Westbrook will have 100+ total yards, and Eagles fans will use that stat to say “we may have lost, but no one can stop Westbrook, therefore we will win the Super Bowl!”
3. Brees will throw for a minimum of 250 yards and Eagles fans will blame it on the refs.

Bonus: The Panthers will be visibly scared of the Saints after seeing this game and comparing it to their own loss last week.
