When Will Pierre Thomas Return?

The latest injury update has Saints running back Pierre Thomas listed as questionable for Sunday's game, meaning there's a 50/50 chance he'll suit up against the Eagles. But Jeff Duncan, like me, thinks the odds are much less than that.

I'd be surprised to see Thomas play at this point, because I don't see the need to rush him back if he's not 100 percent yet. I suppose it's possible Thomas could suit up as a No. 3 tailback, but I wouldn't count on it.

As you know, I expressed my concerns and fears regarding Thomas' injury last week when it caused him to miss the first regular season game this week. Now it's looking as if his knee will keep him out of another game. While Mike Bell has been a pleasant surprise, I'm not so sure he can keep up this pace. So when will Pierre make his triumphant return to the football field and start what many have hoped will be a huge season for him? Does his injury worry you? Has Pierre been overshadowed by Bell? When he does return, how effective will he be? Lot's of questions, even ones I haven't asked. Let's hear your answers.

I made the comment

in the game thread for one of the preseason games that a buddy of mine had a feeling that PT just MIGHT end up on IR, and was told I needed a new buddy. If they can keep getting good numbers from Bell it may not be a bad idea to not risk further injury to PT, put him on IR and bring P J Hill up from the practice squad. Hamilton and Hill both showed potential and flashes of brilliance in preseason. It just may not be worth risking playing PT when they have the depth they have at RB this year

I don't think you're crazy BR

I still think Pierre’s injury is worse than anyone in the organization is letting on.

My point exactly

It wouldn’t be the first time Payton/Loomis hold back on just how severe someone is hurt, and my point isn’t that he SHOULD BE on IR, only that if there is a risk of doing more damage it just might be better for his future if he sit out a season and fully recover. I’d like nothing more than to see him get his chance to prove he can be a feature back, just not at the risk of hurting his career.

OK

Let’s all take a deep breathe, and let a little reality soak in. If he is probable for this game, that almost definitely means he will be able to play next week. Why would we put someone on IR that will be healthy for all but the 1st two games?

As far as PT vs Bell is concerned…

I think they have fairly similar running styles, and would produce about the same given the same opportunities. That being said, I would prefer to have Bell and Thomas split the carries the RB is getting(Assuming Reggie is not getting more than 5 hand-offs). That way we have fresh legs in at all times.

Personally, I think it’s kind of a raw deal if PT never gets his shot, and by shot I mean getting 20 plus carries in the first 3-4 games this year. I think the likelihood of that is so slim, due to Bell’s performance. Which is easy to swallow as a Saint, but as a guy who has been pulling for PT, I just want to see what he can do all by his lonesome, and only get a rest when needed.

PS Depending on how PT runs this year, referring to his style, I could see Bell filling the Aaron Stecker mold.

I don't disagree with anything, but...
If he is probable for this game, that almost definitely means he will be able to play next week.

He is not probable, he is questionable. And those are just labels. When it comes to Payton and injury reports, I just always have a feeling like Payton and other coaches play a game. Whether it’s to fool opposing coaches and screw with their game plans or to try and keep hope alive for fans or whatever. For example, Donovan McNabb. Everyone and their mother (including McNabb’s Chunky soup-loving mother) knew he wasn’t playing this week yet they always left it out there as a possibility. Please. I don’t think you can believe anything from injury reports.

More RB the better

I agree, let them share touches and keep fresh legs in there. Bell by his own admission was gassed in the last game from the number of touches he had. Imagine if you split those touches with a healthy PT and then late in the game you still have two relatively fresh RB’s instead of one exhausted RB. They can hopefully tear apart a now worn down defense for large gains.

That can be the nail in the coffin for many teams. They’ve managed to keep the game competitive all game, but these RB’s are still fresh and hitting hard. Break the will of the other team and put the game out of reach.

This RB situation has the potential to take the offense to a whole new level.

speaking of injuries and secrecy, I have a question...

If the Jets are getting into hot water for hiding Favre’s shoulder injury last year, why aren’t the Saints in trouble for keeping Will Smith’s groin/hernia under wraps for so long last season?

Is there some difference between these two cases that I’m unaware of?

Well...

I think the league hates it when teams lie about higher profile players who play key positions like QB, RB, WR etc.

Brett Favre is high profile.

I don't think.

He’s any more injured than they’ve said he is. He’s got a bad sprain in his knee, and we have usable depth at rb so that he doesn’t have to play hurt right now. It all sounds pretty above board to me. I think he’ll show up at least briefly in the coming game, just to prove he’s not out, but as log as Bell is performing well, I imagine Payton is happy to lay off him as long as possible. If they are actually trying to conceal a surgery on his knee, that’s pretty diabolical, and I wouldn’t put it past any NFL coaches entirely, but I don’t really believe that.

My idea

is that PT is about where they say he is. I don’t expect him to sit out for the season, but I could see him having limited touches untill December if Bell continues to be a decent/solid option at RB along with Reggie. I think it will also depend on how our playoff picture looks later in the season. I voted for the Giants game in week 5 that way it has plenty of time to heal. I hope they take it slow and don’t rush it. I think we can create enough offense with our new looking defense to win all 4 games before that. The Giants game will be tough to call as of right now because we played the Lions week 1 and although they are a new and improved team, they haven’t proven anything just yet. If Bell does well in the next 3 games, it could be later than the Giants game. That wouldn’t be too bad of a problem.

Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

I just hope Bell can last

There were, what…2 plays? 3? where he was slow to get up against the Lions. If they keep rushing him 28 times a game, and he keeps running so hard, I’m worried that we may be seeing Photo Op as the starting RB before Pierre is totally healed.

Now, maybe Hamilton will be even better, who knows? But I just hate seeing good players get used up.

Don't Rush PT.

I say let him get 100% before putting him in. It’s a long season and we have many other options to generate offense.I think Bell will do just fine until PT can return.
