The View From My Couch
I have been laid up since I had surgery last Wednesday. Nothing to serious, repaired nerve damage from a hernia surgery I had a couple years ago. That made for a percocet induced mini-vaca on my couch. So what do you do on Monday when you have to go back to work?....that's right, call in and re-watch the greatness that was Sunday. Fair warning, this choppy. It's a lot of thought, but not organized very well, see above mention of percocet. I also want to thank the other posts we've had, they have accurately sumized the game and feelings. I won't get into how great I think they did as a whole, great team effort.
I decided to watch the Lions game by watching EVERY player on EVERY play. Good news for me, you can't really do that. But you do get to see exactly what the line does on every play. SO I watched hoping to answer some questions.
What's up with the run game? Why it works, and why it does not work?
The D-line, who is doing what?
I watched the Lions and Eagles games this detailed, I have no other basis of comparison for my judgements. I never really watched games last year so I can not say whether or not we are improved from last year. I had a blast watching the game that analytically, I suggest everyone give it a shot if it intrest you. I learned more than I expected just by watching watch what every player did on any particular play.
A few things that I noticed along the way.
- There Is holding on every play
- Heath Evans is an upgrade. He is a big reason our run game is improved. Mike Bell follows his blocks well. On several plays his is the misdirection that allows plays to develop. He is also in everybody's ear, I don't know if it's good or bad, but he is always talking to the guy who just made the play.
- Reggie Bush did a good job of picking up blitzes, on several occasions. Oh and the Eagles blitzes are WICKED.
- We don't pull our guard near as often as Philly.
- The offensive line looks good, even with Brown out. Everybody got beat once or twice. No one person stood out as a weakness and got beat repeatedely. I can say that I thought our Guards played really well. Goodwin seems to always have some help. I'm guessing that comes with being the center though.
- Reggie hesitates to hit the whole when it appears to be blocked. Can't really blame him for that, but when Bell runs, he just follows even when it looks clogged, and the blocks seem to open up once he is there. Bell also helps them open up more by breaking arm tackles of lineman. that seems to be a bit of a difference between the two.
- Reggie's between the tackles TD. It was designed to go right, I believe. The way that the TE, 85, blocked it didn't appear to be a designed cut back. I argued with my brother whether or not he would have had a TD if would have just followed Evans block.
- Reggie's punt return was garbage. Plain and simple. He started to go backwards when the defender was like 12 yards in front of him. I was really big on Reggie getting as many touches on kick returns as he could, but a couple muffed punts, mediocre returns, mixed in with the one backwards return. Not going so well at the beginning of the year.
- Just realized there is a lot of Reggie hating going on up there. Another important question was how much do the reactions of the other teams players depend on Reggie. And the answer is a lot. A number of plays involved Drew reading who bites on Reggie. Shockey got some catches because of it. Reggie also did good job of picking up blitzes, not just chipping at them, but actually stopping them all together.
Defense - I was interested to see, what kind of fomations we used, what personnel, and how much blitzing.
- Anthhony Hargrove is awesome. I noticed things tend to have a ripple effect on the line. Rarely does just one peson make a play. It takes someone starting to force the offense out of position, then someone else capitalizes on it. Hargrove starts the ripple a lot.
- Grant and Smith are the opposite of ripple makers. At least in the two games. I was waiting to see wha they did and it's not a whole lot. Not NEAR enough to be considered compensated fairly.
- Seddrick Ellis is almost always double-teamed. He still manages to be a force though. He is rarely flat out beaten.
- Shanle played better than Fujita.
- Randall Gay was at the root cause for secondary woes, what little there were. I hope Jenkins' speacial teams play helps get him some playing time.
- Bobby McRay is fast, he goes so fast, he blows by the QB most of the time
- Will Smith has this spin move that runs right into Sedrick Ellis most of the time. pretty funny, pretty ineffective.
- Really cool to watch some of our blitzes. sometimes we dive all four linemen into the middle of the pocket and that make sit easier for outside rusher to get to QB.

Boom!
Brilliant my man. You need to have a surgery every week!
This is the most insightful breakdown I’ve ever read anywhere. How long does it take to watch every player on every play?!

probably have to have that
to watch every player on every play. I’ll have to record the game this week and see what that’s like. I imagine i couldn’t do it w/out the percocet lol.
Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D

You gotta get a DVR- it's awesome to watch over and over
Great evaluation. My money says you were really on target with everything. I’m thinking if we see Chuckie and Hancock are lacking, it must leap out at Gw and he will do something. Reggie will be OK. give the team time . He now has his niche. He will score important TDs. But it won’t be his team and it won’t be Drew and Reggie’s team. It will be The Saints. Brees will always be the man. Gay is just seviceable, but he’s a decent zone defense backup, and can play a little man. Jenkins will surpass him by midseason. It’s still good to have Gay. some of the points you say about Reggie (vs Bell) I have seen for a while, but it is nice to know he is picking up the blitz. That’s crucial.

lol—“Hancock.” That one took me a second to figure out, but it was worth it.

I really do feel that if I can see something conclusive...
the coaches can too. I agree with about it being the Saint’s first. I think that is real important, and I think the team knows that, just as they know Drew is the leader.
I think Reggie is finding/has found his niche. I like it too. I think I was very critical because that was one of my main focuses while watching the game. It kind of pains me to see him struggle when he does, because I think they are things that can be corrected. I feel that most of the time when Reggie is hitting the hole, he definitely does a two-step shuffle. When he does, a variety of things seem to happen afterwards;
The LB or defender moves to the other side of the lineman that is blocking them, sometimes it opens up holes. Other times, the O-line loses their block and that’s when you see all the penetration.
He continues behind the lead blocker about 2-3 feet behind them, then he makes contact at the line of scrimmage and generally falls forward for a couple of yards.
If there doesn’t appear to be a hole to run through, and the DE gets pushed inside, or whatever makes him see a little daylight just outside the pocket, he goes for it and tries to salvage it. I didn’t see him do that a whole lot these two games. He did start off with limited hand-offs in the back field.
I was trying to remember ever seeing Reggie break one after bouncing it to the out side. I can kind of remember one against Philly in the playoffs????……anyone else got examples feel free to share.
Who loved seeing him take passes as a straight up WR? I did! His little head juke to the sideline then 15 extra yards to setup Devry’s end of the half TD. A 2 play drive. Are you F-IN kidding me?!?!?!
I want him in 1 vs 1 situations with LB’s and CB’s. But please keep him away form the D-Line.

i was happy seeing him line up as a WR
but what I didn’t really like was that they didn’t have Reggie/Bell in the backfield at the same time. Maybe we’ll see more of that whenever PT gets healthy b/c they don’t want our only 2 RBs(PT was not 100% and Hamilton was on reserve) to get winded. In 06 we had healthy, productive RBs to come in and rotate the other 2 out for a couple plays whereas last game we didn’t. Anyways, I think that gave us alot of success running the ball in 06.

Great Point
I’ve been meaning to mention that for SO long. Why the hell can’t we have two RB on the field at the same time? I think that would open up a lot.

i rec'd it
i liked the comments and from what i saw on the game it seemed pretty spot on. don’t give up on reggie just yet. We always seem to forget taht he’s going to have plays where he runs backwards for 10 yards and lose it all but there are also plays where he does that and breaks it all the way for 6.

I would love too...
however, I just don’t have the time. I’m going to try to rewatch games like that more often, but no promises. Honestly with proper excessive use of the Fast Forward, slo mo, and rewind it took like 4-5 hours. That was after I got “used” to it after the Lions game. I’m starting to think that a joint effort would be great. Like someone do a quarter, or a half. Then bring it all together…
I suggest that whoever can DVR the game, do it. Then go back and pick a few plays that interest you. Before you know it, a lot of things just fall into place. Give it a shot, let me knwo what you think.

Really great analysis
I agree with everyone else. Truly great analysis. No offense, but I hope you are injured 16 times a year during football season (oh wait, that’s Bush/Shockey’s job).

I rewatched the game and Reggie did have a few very good plays and
he was a good decoy on a few others where they faked to him

On second thought...
Just finished watching the game for the first time. (NFL.com doesn’t allow you to watch the archived games while there’s a real game being played…so Sunday and Monday nights are both out. I could watch at work, but that’s risky.)
It seemed to me while I was chewing my nails to the quick trying to follow it on TV during the Atlanta-Carolina game that we were giving up far too much yardage in the air. But now, I’ve revised my views.
Kolb threw for 391 yards. That’s an enormous number. But 71 of that total came on one play; another 65 came at the end of the first half, when we were in a 3-man rush, prevent defense; and a total of 159 yards came on the Eagles’ final 3 drives in garbage time. That’s 295 yards for a net of three points—because even though DeSean Jackson scored, Kolb also gave up a touchdown to Darren Sharper (where can I get me a #42 jersey?).
We also got much better pressure than I thought we had. Three or four times (I lost track) the pressure forced Kolb to throw the ball away. Another two times he was hit just as the ball was released. That, plus two sacks. The total number of pressures was pretty good; but more than that, it seemed as though almost every time we actually tried to get to Kolb, it resulted either in a sack, an incompletion, or a turnover. I think GW’s defense is just a tick away from having a “statement game.” Maybe he wants to have that game against Buffalo?

Actually I am wondering if Payton wants the statement game somwehere else.
I think Payton wants to really take it to the Giants (all of the NFC East in General, too). Remember when he coached there and Fassel took over play-calling from him and got them to the playoffs? I’m sure Payton didn’t forget. I was happy to hear him talk to the team about how great of a victory this past week was at such a hard venue to play…he told them to jog around the stadium a couple of times to savor it and they’d remember it for 25 years. Still, I am waiting to see what we unleash on Eli so that Payton can show how much better Brees is and how good of a play caller he is.

Payton may want it to be against the NFC-E (and/or multiple times against them) but I suspect GW wants it against the Jets. Think about it. Two DCs from the Buddy Ryan tree facing off? Who wouldn’t want to prove he’s the better, smarter, “cooler” (or whatever) offshoot of that tree? Especially when you are going up against Buddy’s own son?
And of course he could want it against the Bills because he’d no doubt love to show them that “if you’d only gotten me a QB like Drew look what I could have done”.
Or both.
Or none of the above.
But regardless these next few games should be a LOT of fun to watch.

but I still think Mc Cray/ Hargrove gets mor pressure than Chuckie/Hancock
