Pierre Thomas > Mike Bell?
OK Saints fans enlighten me.
I drafted Pierre expecting big things from him for my fantasy team, and so far he's done nothing but ride the pine with his knee issues. Then I pick up Bell on the waiver and now he's dinged up. What's the deal? Do we have any idea what kind of workload each back will get if all are healthy? Dare I drop Bell and pick up Knowshon Moreno who was dropped last week? I'd like to, but not if Bell is still going to see significant carries.
I doubt any of you have any definitive answers that will put me at ease here, but seriously, your RB's are driving me nuts. Help a brother out!
Thanks!

I think Payton is the new Shanahan, plug in whomever is healthy this week and let him rip.
For that reason even though as a homer I really wanted the PT Cruiser and I’ve thought many a time about picking up Bell I haven’t done it. I think Moreno is far more likely to be a consistent performer. Unless you have room on your bench for all three to plug in whomever looks to either get more of the snaps and/or have the easier matchup… I just can’t recommend picking up any Saint RB right now.
Unless, of course, you’re in a PPR league, in which case you almost have to draft Reggie. But even then I wouldn’t go for either of the others unless you have spare bench space or your RBs aren’t your primary source of points and you can just plug in whomever you want

That's the thing
I drafted Pierre in the 3rd so I basically had to handcuff him with Bell. My roster is full of RB’s and I would have to drop one to pick up Moreno, and the only one I’d really consider dropping is on of the NO boys.
RB roster:
Pierre
Bell
Ray Rice
Felix Jones
McFadden
M. Lynch
It’s crammed with potential but no real proven guys. I was really counting on Pierre being my go to guy.. meh..

I think Payton likes Bell a little more
For what it’s worth, Jay Glazer reported this last week:
By the way, great story … coach Sean Payton has secretly been pumping up third-string RB Mike Bell to me for the last month. But get this, he even convinced his son Connor to draft Bell in his son’s fantasy league. Peyton thinks he can be the every-down pounding back they need. So Pops told Connor to take him as a late-round sleeper and promised that he’d be a great pick for him. So Connor responded, “Mike Bell? Who’s Mike Bell???” Sean said, “Trust me Connor, I might have some insight into this.”
PT Bruiser will be motivated to really prove himself now that he’s healthy or close to healthy. If he plays against the Bills and Bell doesn’t, look out! PT is hungry and I’ll bet he sees his big chance slipping away due to an untimely knee injury. He’ll be a monster this week if fully healed. I’d recommend holding onto them both for another week at least just to see how Pierre does this season. I currently have them both in one of my leagues and that’s what I plan to do. As of now though, I’d say Bell is Payton’s no. 1 and PT is 1a. Bush is currently the multidimensional threat, which is what he should have been all along.

Oh yeah, forgot Moreno
I wouldn’t drop any of your guys for Moreno at this point. He’s still too much of a question mark. Plus, he’s in an offense that seems too enigmatic. He may come on strong in a few weeks and, then again, he may not. Buckhalter currently seems like the guy in Denver, but I’m sure McDaniels will want to get his 1st round RB going at some point. But, when will that be? It’s anyone’s guess.
Felix Jones is clearly your RB1 this week with Marion the Barbarian out. Plus, the Panthers run D is horrible. Ray Rice is probably your RB2 based on his matchup with the Browns. Pierre will probably be the best of the others for this week at least. If you’re looking for a long-term RB stud, Lynch may be that guy starting week 4. McFadden is a Raider and all Raiders are frustrating and inconsistent. I don’t trust any of them enough to start them.

Especially with them losing yet another DT to injured reserve. Ouch. Felix should take them to the woodshed so long as he doesn’t wear out before the game is over.

yeah
sounds like he likes him more than Reggie and we all know he loves Reggie(he does seem to be fading him out a bit though and not showing as much love as before)

i have absolutely no complaints on bell
hitherto, he’s been a godsend. pounding the rock every week has been huge for our offense and it’s been keeping defenses honest, allowing brees to put up some insane numbers. i think bell is a top 5 rusher so far and that’s a huge improvement on offense from last year.

Bell is better "value"
as a sleeper pick, but Pierre is the slightly better player, imo. They may have similarly lackluster fantasy stats by years end, especially in rushing yards, but I think PT will gain the edge in receiving yards and TDs down the stretch. Who knows, though. Neither are going to be superb feature backs, like Peterson or Gore, but either could be consistent producers. I think PT will be the better of the two, though.

they are pretty even when both are healthy
i’m thinking that PT might be a better receiver, but not sure. but on any given sunday, whoever starts will not be a dropoff either way. not sure where that puts you fantasywise…… for this week lesean mccoy of the eagles could be a sleeper as Westbrook is banged up and I don’t know if they would give many carries to anyone else. plus, Eagles will need to establish run w/ Kolb as QB, although Andy Reid hates the run.

This is good stuff guys
Thanks for putting in the time and effort.
So if one back is starting, (it doesn’t matter who) do you think that’s the guy who will get the bulk of the work, or do you think the guys split touches? This of course assumes both are healthy.

Nobody knows
because both haven’t been healthy yet. But I’d guess whoever starts gets the touches.

we would all have to wait
and see. Coming into the season PT was our main back but Bell has been great in his absence so they could share the workload while reggie gets a few in between. Hard to call right now since they both haven’t been healthy at the same time. I see PT getting a few more though.

Thanks guys
I still have questions, but at least now I know they are unanswerable for the time being. I’ll keep checking back.

Also
I assume Pierre is starting this week? Do we have any idea how many touches he gets?

you should've picked up Bush
And I’m not just saying that because of the man crush. Dude is gonna score no matter what. He’s produced a little so far. I got a feeling he’s gonna kill it next few weeks. Right now though, Thomas and Bell are both banged up and if Payton is smart he’ll limit them for the next few weeks.
Don't worry I got your back cuz...

i said it before the Eagles game and it held true
whoever is healthy and looks like they are picking up good yardage after a qtr or 1.5 qtrs will get the most touches. that could be Reggie, P/T oe even Lynell Hamilton. Bell would be in the hunt but my guess is he will be in uniform but not used or not used much

I doubt Payton dresses Bell this week
It’s clear that Payton sees him as a great asset, so I expect he’ll want to rest him this game to ensure there are no complications with the healing of that knee. It currently sounds like they’ll try to ease PT back in during this one. I expect an even split between Hamilton’s and PT’s touches with Reggie mixed in as the multidimensional threat. I just hope Lynell exercises better ball security than he did in our first preseason game. He looked much better in the last one against Miami, so hopefully he keeps it up. This is his big shot, so I hope he plans to make the most of it.
Unless PT Bruiser sets Buffalo on fire Sunday with a huge game, I think Bell has already won the primary RB job in Payton’s mind. There will still be a pretty healthy split in carries between he and PT (depending on which one has the hot hand, as you say), but Payton seems to already have a man-crush on Bell, based on the Jay Glazer report.

....and I do too
I’m already man-crushing on Bell myself. He’s reminded me of a young Deuce these past two games.

Welcome back Pierre!
The guy was a maniac last night.
I ended up dropping Bell to pick up Moreno. It looks like it may have been the right move since he’s getting the bulk of the touches over Buckhalter, for now anyway. I may have to drop McFadden and go get Bell again since he’s turning out to be a complete waste of bench space.
