Saints Place Jammal Brown on IR; Sign Nick Leckey
It didn't take very long for my concerns to prove correct. After expressing just this very morning how worried I was about the Saints health at offensive tackle, the Saints have placed their best player at the position and former Pro-Bowler , Jammal Brown, on injured reserve and ending his season. I guess his injury was worse than expected.
To make up for it the Saints re-signed lineman Nick Leckey. Welcome back Nick. Though Leckey is versatile enough to play both center and guard, he does not play the tackle position. Technically, this still leaves a very thin offensive tackle unit but perhaps the plan will be to move Carl Nicks over to tackle in case of emergency and have Nesbit fill in at guard for Nicks.
Payton was asked yesterday whether or not he would address the lack of depth at offensive tackle and said that wasn't the plan.
Do you feel you might have to make a move at offensive tackle?
Right now I don't envision any move. We'll continue to work and get these guys treated and healthy. Like a lot of players this time of year after the third game, there are some nicks but we'll keep battling.
Technically, he's right; they haven't.

bushrod has been ok but did anyone notice when strief came in how well he did? there was absolutly no push or presure from that side of the line. beautiful work from strief
and did anyone notice
that Pierre’s big yards were coming running to the left side behind strief

Yep
We still need depth at that position!! Brown hurt his ankle Sun. not bad but what will happen if he goes down. Then we down to one player Geez that would be terrible!!

rotoworld.com:
CONTRACT INFO: 2009: $3.29 million, 2010: Free Agent
The Saints’ best lineman, Brown is a free agent after the season and will likely be brought back on a relatively cheap, short-term deal.

That's weird
I got my info from the Times-Pic. Guess that was a mistake.

guess we should be thankful
Brown’s injury occurred early in preseason which gave Bushrod a few preseason games of seasoning before the main events started

they can't rain
on my optimism with only one injury at tackle where Bushrod/Strief have looked good as his replacement. Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise like when Nicks played for Nesbit?
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
Why bother resigning Leckey?
What does that gain them? Even if they move Nicks to the outside in an emergency (please, no – I seem to remember Payton trying Nicks out at tackle and it was a disaster), what good is Leckey going to be if Nesbit moves back in at guard?
The worst thing about this is if Strief has to continue at left tackle, there is no one behind Stinchcomb in the depth chart. The Saints currently have 3 tackles on the roster and one has a minor injury. Get someone signed. NOW!
Does anyone know anything about Levi Jones? Jason La Confora mentioned his name in his blog as an experienced left tackle out there in free agency.
Only if you have a time machine or a magic healing machine that can turn a sack of injuries into a whole man again. When he was released by the Bengals (who at the time were mostly deservedly ranked in the bottom end of the 20s on the offseason power charts — their upset wins over GB and PIT were 6+ months off at the time) they had only two other OTs (plus their LG who ended up becoming the new LT) and they hadn’t even yet drafted Andre Smith (so they didn’t even know if they would get an OT in the draft, much less if they could sign him). They released him anyway.
If he couldn’t play for a team that was (at the time at least) in that much disarray, do you want him within 1000 miles of Drew Brees’ blindside? I sure don’t.
Oh and he also just got worked out by GB. The team with a RT who couldn’t block a fruit fly and an injured LT, with a backup LT/LG who got absolutely manhandled by opponents. And so far at least he hasn’t even gotten a contract offer from them.
I feel a bit sorry for the guy because he had loads of potential, but he got hurt and stayed hurt and could never get healthy. Maybe with a whole year off he could be a comeback player next year, but this year I wouldn’t touch him with an 80 foot pole.
I still wish
we would have drafted D’Brick over Bush. Said it at the time of the pick and have seen absolutely nothing since to change my mind. All we would have lost in Brown is a RT and we still could have selected Jones-Drew or Norwood to fill that ever-so-paramount decoy role. At least we get to see what we could have had this week.

I was worried with Jamal on the team
I’m crying without him. In the corner. A dark corner. And there is a lot of wine involved.
I'm not sold on Bushrod yet
Jermon has done a serviceable job so far, but Trent Cole was having his way with Bushrod before he came out of the game. I was pleasantly surprised by Strief’s play – he hasn’t been known for his quick feet. (Someone on nola.com actually suggested Strief is too small to play tackle. I guess 6’7", 320 is small these days! lol)
Thanks for the info about Levi Jones, FriarBob. I figured he must have had some injury issues looking at his playing time the last three seasons.
But the fact remains that the Saints only have 3 tackles, with one injured. If any one of them gets seriously hurt, they are screwed. They definitely need to sign someone soon. I know he’s 35 years old, but how about Jon Runyan? I wonder if he’d be willing to talk a back up job?
Another question is how might this affect Hartley? I suspect he may already be in danger of losing his job, and if the Saints need to clear yet another roster spot for him, that could be tricky.
One other point about Strief
If he’s playing tackle, they can’t use him as the second TE in power running formations. I guess Thomas can take that duty, but I’d rather see the big guy in there.
(*correction: I wonder if Runyan would be willing to take a backup job.)
We got Darnell Dinkins, presumably for that role, but he broke his foot or something. He’s still part of the 53 man roster, so I’m thinking he’s going to be ready soon. Good point about Hartley. Carney hasn’t been tested yet, thankfully, but he’s been consistent enough so far. I wonder who they’ll keep on after the bye. Can’t imagine we’ll be activating three kickers down the stretch.

The two children of these spawned and fused in a tantric love session to create Troy Polamalu. The mother however died as he tore through the birth canal with a spin move."
