Scott Fujita Boldly Supports Same-Sex Marriage
Back in April Baltimore Ravens Pro-Bowl linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo took a bold stance and said this, among other things, in an article he wrote for the Huffington Post:
But now here in 2009 same sex marriages are prohibited. I think we will look back in 10, 20, 30 years and be amazed that gays and lesbians did not have the same rights as every one else.
Saints linebacker Scott Fujita agrees.
Yesterday, Fujita responded to Ayanbadejo's words when he was quoted in an article written by Dave Zirin of The Nation.
I hope he's right in his prediction, and I hope even more that it doesn't take that long. People could look at this issue without blinders on...the blinders imposed by their church, their parents, their friends or, in our case, their coaches and locker rooms. Fujita continued, "I wish they would realize that it's not a religion issue. It's not a government issue. It's not even a gay/straight issue or a question of your manhood. It's a human issue. And until more people see that, we're stuck arguing with people who don't have an argument.
Pretty gutsy stuff from both of these players.

not only is this political, it is religious. there are some of us who still care about what the bible says.

I disagree, but not in a jerky way.
This is about football in the sense that it’s about the culture of homophobia that apparently exists in NFL locker rooms. It’s at least as much about football as the occasional pictures of cheerleaders that people post on here. Neither of these things, this post or posts with pictures of cheerleaders, are explicitly about the game of football itself, but are tangentially related as parts of the culture that has sprung up around the game. I think there’s definitely a place for both of these sorts of posts on this site.
No, he's not gay...just sensible.
You’re missing his whole point.
You’re free to care about what the Bible says, but don’t restrict the limits of that freedom. By making everything about your religion, you’re excluding this freedom from others.
This issue will be somewhat like segregated schools. When we first mixed schools, there was a lot of opposition. Today, we look back at it an think we were crazy for opposing such a thing, because as it turns out, it works wonderfully.

You don’t need to be gay to believe in gay marriage, just like you don’t need to be black to believe in civil rights.
No
You don’t have to be black to believe in civil rights. I’m black and don’t believe in civil rights. I’m also not gay and don’t believe in gay marriage. It’s a wonderful country.

Scott Fujita is the man for saying this. I can already tell by the small number of comments that a good deal of the posters here are predictably the macho homophobic jock types I always assume most football fans to be. I’m daring you to be different and not fit the stereotype that high school nerds have been propagating about you for decades.
If Scott Fujita were gay, and if I were gay, and if gay marriage existed in this state, and if he thought I was cute, I’d marry him.
What a hypocrite.

Since when is being politically correct gutsy?
I’d say those opinions are exactly the opposite. Marriage is an invention of religion. How then is it not a religious issue? This is another creeping intrusion of the gay agenda to normalize their perversion. Just like Cox Cable has no business broadcasting their stupid their anti-’That’s so gay’ commercials, this football oriented blog should not make it its business either. Cox is for cable, CSC is for football. Ayenbadejo and Fujita are not experts in social science or morality and their opinions mean ZERO.

Good Morning CSC Members!!
I’m going to address this once, and only once.
First of all, whether you like it or not, this does have to do with football. As much, if not more so, than Sean Payton’s stupid freakin’ X-box movie or the current relationship status of KK and Reggie. If a Saints player said it, it WILL BE posted on CSC. That’s why you all like coming here, because I find anything having to do with the Saints and make it available to you.
Now, if you think I didn’t realize the consequences of posting this, than you must take me for a moron. I sir, am not a moron. I knew damn good and well what can happen. And I don’t care.
You’ve just opened the door to politics

I may have opened the door, but it’s you guys as a community that choose to walk through it. I posted this because I am testing all of you. If you guys really do make up the great, wonderful and most mature Saints community on the internet, than prove it. Handle this situation in the polite manner I know you can, not like the damn idiots who troll the Nola.com comment section.
All that being said, so far I think you guys have done a pretty good job. Congrats on that. Nobody wants to kill each other and nobody has used bad language. So just keep it up for a few more hours and soon enough, this page will drop all the way down to the bottom, eventually off the main page, and be a distant memory to all of you.
Then I will know that in the future when tough topics arise, as they always will in life, I can safely mention these issues (as they relate to football) and not ignore them for fear of ridiculous outlash.

It doesn't make me angry as much sad...
To see that this country is moving towards endorsing sin. We are all sinners and I’m not here to look down at others because I consider myself the worst sinner of all…however, Christ has changed my heart and saved me from the punishment I so richly deserve by paying the price for my sin on the cross. I am sad that this country no longer tries to bring people to repentence for their sins. It is assumed that people are going to cheat, lie, and steal if given the opportunity. We’re told sex sells and that it doesn’t matter, but are not told to give a second thought as to what God thinks of what we are doing.
I don’t want anybody to suffer the eternal punishment for sin and if I love the people around me, I will not push/endorse ANY type of sinful lifestyle. If I do, then I’m saying because I don’t want you to think I am intolerant or not like me, I’ll let you think that everything is OK and not try to show you what Scripture says and do so in a loving fashion. I would hope that you would do the same for me. If you see somebody about to walk out in front of a bus, would you pull them out of the way? If I see somebody who needs salvation from eternal punishment in hell, just like I was before God worked through somebody to point me to Scripture, then I should do something.
So I don’t hate sinners…I’d have to hate everybody but Jesus if I did. And we’re all on a level playing field. In the book of James it says that if we are guilty of one sin, then we are guilty of all. However, that doesn’t mean I should be supporting sin. Jesus said we are to first deny ourselves (our sinful desires), then take up our cross daily (put our sinful desires to death), and then follow Him. I am praying for hearts to be turned to God more than anything…

The Bible is a sin!
Aren’t lies sins? Well the bible is full of them. I don’t want to start a holy war here but you are preaching from a book that teaches we are all the product of incest. I don’t knock anybodies religion, free will is awesome, but you shouldn’t try and push it on anyone else.
The Bible is full of sinners
The Bible does not lie, people do. And God uses the Bible to show us our sin, leading to conviction. Then Jesus came and paid the price for the sins of those who would accept Him as Lord and Savior. If I see people who are bound for hell because they don’t know Jesus, I should at least explain this to them (in a loving manner) or else I am turning a blind eye. We are all sinners and need salvation.

Not really the countrys job, is it? One of the reasons people came to North America in the first place was so that their country couldn’t tell them what beliefs they endorsed or not. If individual churches/religions want to say no gay marriage, that’s ok with me. As for the state, that’s a different story.
I for one applaud Fujita for taking a stand for what he believes in. The world needs more of that from public figures. I happen to agree with him. Brees’ stance on Gitmo, not so much, but I’m ok with him saying it. It won’t affect my man crush on him, although it does probably rule out taking the relationship any farther than that.
And while we’re at it, the country has always “endorsed” sin from time to time. War – endorsed by the country on occasion. Jesus – not so cool with war. Slavery? Ditto.

If Heaven is such a wonderful place, then how is being crucified such a huge sacrifice?
"It feels like a tiny prick " -Reggie Bush
That's simple...
Jesus was always in Heaven being worshipped continually by the angels. He had never experienced any of the pains that we humans do. Then He came down from Heaven, was persecuted and crucified in order that we sinful humans could go to Heaven because He paid the price for our sins which we deserve to pay. So Jesus sacrificed Himself for us…not for Himself.

you've got to be kidding me...
We’ve been endorsing sin since we landed here. Ask the Indians or blacks? You can’t pick and choose what “sins” you abhor and what sins you approve and gloss over with a simple…“that was then” “or that was a mistake.” Sorry, as a christian myself, I’m not going to act like America is the epitomy of righteous, in fact we are one of the most hypocritical countries in the world, in relation to christianity…Am I claiming we are supposed to be perfect? Nope but it’s the most ridiculous thing to start talking about God and America like the two are synonymous. I don’t believe in that “Manifest Destiny” crap. Dig deeper homie, America has been in sin from the gitgo, just because God allowed it doesn’t mean he agreed with it…
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
I'm not saying that the practice has ever been perfect
but the intention was the spread of Christianity. I don’t think slavery was right or forcing out the Indians. But those weren’t the ideals that were intended, either. I don’t pick and choose the issues…this is just the one that was brought up here. And no, America is not the chosen nation of God…God only chose one nation, Israel, who rejected their Savior, but at the end of the world the nation of Israel (in that time, not covering all times) will accept Jesus as their Savior. That said, even Israel wasn’t perfect as the chosen nation of God. We’re all sinners…but that doesn’t make it right to endorse any sin.

This country is a one liner joke. Religious fear has brainwashed most of the population. People hate people cause they are different or like different things. It’s thinking like this that is going to be the end of the United States. It seems like most people want to be involved in other peoples lives and that is not right. Mind your own f’in business, and focus on things like teaching your children right from wrong, like stealing is bad or teach them respect and accountability. We need to focus on other things like how to vote, and not to believe everything we hear. i.e. Obama’s or Bush’s election B.S. They aren’t telling you the truth they are telling you what you want to hear. I’ll change this and I’ll change that … No they won’t they are going to get paid make money for other people that pay off other people. WE NEED TO REFOCUS ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN THE WORLD, like Darfur instead of oil. we got that covered and we aren’t going to need oil forever. We should save the $915,153,599,440 and use that for other things like energy development(solar, Algae, wind, and surf) We would feel more secure in OUR country and not so worried about losing oil dollars and POWER, I fight the NWO and you should to….They oppose gay marriage.

Without going into a lot of detail...
There are good, logical, compelling reasons for opposing gay marriage. It isn’t a minor issue when a minority seeks to throw away several thousands of years of universal human experience for an untried social experiment. It never ceases to amaze me that people extol the virtue of being “open-minded” (in other words: believe as I do), but seldom give any credit at all to being skeptical.
That’s all a conservative is, after all: a political skeptic. Not necessarily a hateful, irrational loser (although some conservatives are that…just as some liberals are), but simply someone who wants to see some evidence that the latest and greatest galaxy-saving Change will actually not f*** everything up before it’s implemented and it’s too late to stop it.
Just because something is like how it was in your grandparents’ day doesn’t mean it’s bad and needs to be erased from the face of the Earth. I think all you people in favor of gay marriage are homophobic. That’s from the Greek, meaning “fear of sameness.”
I prefer instilling some hagiophobia in our opponents.

"Brees will kill you, but he lets you decide how fast he tightens the garrote." -Chris Brown
Not the institution of marriage…the conception of marriage as an institution based on the union of a man and a woman. Which it has been in all times and all places since the last time we were in the Super Bowl.
Don’t get me wrong…I’m not suggesting that society has no right to redefine its institutions. If that’s truly what a majority of people want, there’s no stopping it. I question that it’s wise.

I just think that the term, “marriage”, should belong to private entities, and that, in terms of legal documents, which can grant various tax and insurance benefits or drawbacks in the case of marital status, all contractually monogamous relationships should be “civil unions”, or whatever. You can call your husband, wife, life partner, common law spouse whatever you feel inclined to in the comfortable confines of your church, peer group, community, or whatever, but when contracts and tax documents are involved, everybody has to get the same access. It’s not sullying the good name of a sacred ritual to extend the same legal rights to any two age-appropriate humans who agree to sign their domestic and reproductive rights over to one another. And I don’t think any marital law is more or less vulnerable to abuse than another. Just ask the Anglican Church, or Woody Allen, or Gerard Depardieu.

something isn’t better because that’s how it was 50 years ago either. We had segregation 50 years ago and hopefully we can all agree that isn’t a good idea.
And don’t act like marriage has had one monolithic definition for all of human history. Heck Abraham (I think it was him – correct me if I’m wrong, my CCD lessons are getting a little hazy) had multiple wives, right? It wasn’t so long ago that women were essentially bought and sold for marriages. Within some of our lifetimes mixed race marriages were illegal in the US, not to mention divorce.
bq think all you people in favor of gay marriage are homophobic. That’s from the Greek, meaning "fear of sameness."
count me in on that group. I don’t want us all to be forced to be the same. Have the same beliefs, live the same way. There is strength in diversity, that’s what the country should be about.
mmm...
most conservatives just want to “conserve” the things of old. Not all but most. Not saying “liberals” don’t have their vices because a lot of them just want to accept everything and make everything relative…however I find that most conservatives, who aren’t fiscal but social tend to be the most narrow-minded people around. That’s why most of them harbor in the most rural areas of the united states, they don’t have to deal with “others” and so maintain their skewd views on races, sex, money and etc…. (the liberal version of this is to follow sooner or later)

or who marries who – as long as it’s not my wife or me!! I have a great wife, am happily married, and don’t really care what couples are “couples.” It’s their business.

If
— big if — it only pertains to the couple involved. When it instead involves a drastic change to the basic structure of society, it’s a good idea to proceed with caution.

There’s already no booty humping in public. Well, not legal, anyway.

i agree phil...
and I’m a christian…but i know better than trying to bombard ppl with my beliefs. I can share my faith but I’m not going to judge ppl just because they believe something else or whatever. That’s what’s wrong with christianity today. Way too fundamental and controlled by politics and race…
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
I’m just going to say that Scott Fujita is a lot smarter than I thought he was. Wonder how Shanle feels about it?

How does being a moral coward mean you are smart?
“Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence.” – Robert Kennedy.
If we could just sythesize life in a laboratory, we could prove that the creation of life requires no intelligence.

Don’t give a damn if the whole teams gay, so long as they take their honeymoon in Miami!!!!!!
It is better to fail historical, than the live in mediocrity- Unknown
Meh
that’s how I feel about it. It’s his opinion on things. I don’t care too much what his opinions are as long as they don’t affect his play and aren’t “hating” on other people. If he said he was ok with not having gay marriage or vice verca(which he just did), then it wouldn’t bother me as long as he is respectful about it ie. no saying he wants to kill them or something like that. I just don’t want people like that in our locker room because I don’t think it’d be good for the team as a whole. Also, I think Fujita is married.
As far as I go, I don’t care if they marry each other. I don’t think that religion belongs in this discussion. As far as Christianity goes we are all equal, should respect our neighbors(other human beings), and not pass judgement on other people. With all of those things, it seems that deciding whether or not a person can get married shows we are not all equal and that you are passing judgement for living in sin(which we all do). So I don’t think that religion is a very good argument against gay marriage. Now, from what I read from ME, that could be a valid point but I just skimmed over it and found that he had an argument without politics or religion. I didn’t really read enough of it to know too much about what he was saying. Anyways, I think that people who are just like any other couple(ie 2 ppl that love each other) should have the same benefits of everyone else who loves each other and gets married. Beyond them having the same benefits, I don’t really care what you do at your place. People don’t bother me if i kiss my fiance in public so why bother a gay couple about it?

The Bible says it is wrong...
there is nothing for me to judge. If you have a problem with the Bible, consider that it is the Word of God.

you eat shrimp?
‘cause the Bible says that’s wrong too. You alright with stoning adulterers? That’s in there too.

its the next step
in the one you posted as something you wanted to see.
It HAS to be the next step in that conversation because the only reason that this topic is news at all is because some people think a book told them it was wrong.
course i found a book called “Janet and Joan, A modern family” It says it right so now its my book vs their book. psst mine has pics MUCH better

In the New Testament all is declared clean
People take parts of the Bible and run with it all the time. Stoning adulterers is also taken care of, too. All kinds of arguments can be made from parts of Scripture, but we have to know all of it to get to the truth.
by BlackandGold4ever on Oct 1, 2009 5:47 AM CDT up reply actions
I must have been unclear...sorry
I wasn’t saying that people are supposed to take parts, but the whole. I was trying to show that people come up with statements like eating shrimp is sinful and we stone adulterers because they only use one part of Scripture instead of taking it as a whole. Sorry for the confusion if I didn’t clarify that before.

I believe you are referring to Mosaic Law, and fortunately
we no longer live under Mosaic Law. The laws from the Old Testament were replaced with the laws of the New Testament when Jesus died on the cross.
i.e. when man sinned in the Old Testament, a sacrifice (usually an animal) had to be made in order to obtain forgiveness for that sin. now you simply repent and ask for forgiveness and your sin is washed away through the blood of the ultimate sacrificial Lamb (Jesus Christ).
I’m not trying to get into a Spiritual debate here, but I don’t appreciate people distorting the Word of God. Though you may take the Bible lightly, some people on this site do not. It’s amazing how far people can & will go to defend “gay rights”, but when Christians defend their beliefs it’s a whole different story.
bottom line: Beliefs are like opinions, everybody’s got some. So if ours differ from yours, so be it. That’s your choice. No one is looking down on you for being homosexual or whatever it is you seem so adamant to defend.
Dud has spoken.
actually we dont follow mosaic law or new testament law
this is america, jack! so we follow common law (or in LA we’re based on french civil code). and i think its a cop out to say that “the bible says its a sin”. is that your best argument?
by DrewBreesManCrush on Oct 1, 2009 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions
best argument? I'm not arguing, Jack!
I have my beliefs and you have yours. If you choose condone homosexuality…so be it. That’s YOUR choice. I’m sorry if it offends you that i don’t buy into the “gay is o.k.” train of thought.
Dud has spoken.
actually
was just saying that you can pick and choose which parts of “the book” you get to cite for examples on what is right and wrong …. why cant I pick and choose which parts of the “the book” i think are right and wrong and live my life that way?
You are entitled to your rights and freedoms and your opinions.
Gay people are too
so are non Christians, those believing in a different god or no god at all.
ps.. I am not gay and feel no need to be gay to defend their right to do as they please.
MT
and how exactly am I infringing on anybody's rights....
when I simply state that i don’t agree with homosexuality? I’m sorry if that offends any of you gays or gay sympathizers, but that’s my beliefs.
I also don’t agree with porn or adultery. Is everybody gonna get up in arms over that too?
Dud has spoken.
because its not something that you agree upon
the idea of having sex with another man is completely disgusting to me (despite my misleading name). but i dont “agree” or “disagree” with my family and friends who wake up one day and find themselves attracted to other guys (or girls). porn and adultery, those are activities like drinking alcohol that you can choose to avoid. being gay is not a choice, most gay people would probably tell you its a lot easier to be straight.
by DrewBreesManCrush on Oct 1, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions
if you accept your family or friends for coming out of the closet...fine.
i have no problems with that. hell, I’d learn to accept my sister if she turned out gay. but what i won’t do, is believe that she was simply “born that way”. being gay IS a choice. Again, that’s just my beliefs…I’m sorry if you don’t feel the same way.
Dud has spoken.
It all boils down to this
Either you believe the Bible or you don’t. BUT the truth is still the truth whether any of us accept it or not. Just like a lie is a lie whether any of us believe it or not.
by BlackandGold4ever on Oct 1, 2009 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions
what does that even mean
there is some wisdom in the bible, but it is very far from perfect. in college i wrote a paper about wife pimping in the old testament (so was that undone in the new testament?). so i dont believe that i have to accept it as a whole. truth is truth? a lie is a lie? you lost me there…
by DrewBreesManCrush on Oct 1, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions
What I am saying is...
the Bible is the truth…all of it. Whether anybody wants to accept that as truth or not it doesn’t matter. And the lies that the world tells to distract us from the truth are lies even if we are deceived by them. The Bible itself claims that all of it is the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16), which inherently makes it truth. Yes, many bad things happened in the history of the Bible, but it does not mean that the Bible endorsed the sin. Actually the Bible shows how God loves us in spite of our sin and Jesus came to pay the price for our sin so that we can go to Heaven.
