Just a Hypothetical

Just a quick thought for discussion and just wondering what other members of the WHO DAT Nation thought. If Reggie would be used as a Wes Welker type route-runner would he be a pro-bowler. Mabye a few end arounds and such but mainly slot receiver.  I understand we drafted him as a back but name a linebacker or a nickel back that could stay with Reggie. It would be a constant mismatch and that could push the defense into more soft zones or draw safety help to that side of the field just to help cover over the top which would open up your middle (Shockey) or post routes (Henderson). Just wondering what everyone though. Thanks again

Here is my question...

Doesn’t Reggie already pretty much do this? He lines up everywhere on the field, the slot being one of them.

And to achieve these mismatches, isn’t it better disguised since he’s a “running back” and not a full-fledged slot receiver? That’s what makes Reggie so wonderful.

Reggie is NOT wonderful

Reggie is supposed to be wonderful. Reggie is one of the wekest links we have. No one is worried about Reggie this year, they are worried about PT and Bell. What does that say? Reggie could be a real threat, but he’s not. The kickoffs are a joke. Why is he still back there? Because he’s got a 60 million dollar contract and he’s not an every down player. And, face it, he’s not even a good special teams player. We would be taken seriously in this league if Reggie wasn’t a bust.

Sorry, but it’s the truth.

IF....

Bush is the weakest link.

Then we dont even have to play the games we have already won the Superbowl for the next 3 years.

Is the the best player on the team? nope.
Is he a valuable member of the team? yep

Can he get better? Yep

so i'm sure that you hated the game

where Reggie was returning punts(he doesn’t do kickoffs) against the Vikings last year? And to say that no one is worried about Bush is probably the most wrong thing i’ve heard about him since i’ve been here. Last week, Shockey could’ve had a TD probably if he would’ve broken 1 tackle and that’s all because of a fake toss to Reggie. Everyone on the Dline and the middle and olb on the toss side went for the fake. The other guy did his job, covering the TE and kept it from being a TD. Make the 1 guy miss and it’s a TD. Anyways, I understand that he hastn’ done that well in special teams this year. If you think that Reggie is one of our weakest links, I’ll consider us lucky. Not trying to bring back out the Reggie debate, we should wait till the end of the season to get back on that topic, just disagreeing.

Why limit such a talented player?

If Wes Welker could line up as a running back, don’t you think the Pats would do that sometimes? Being able to play so many different positions is Reggie’s strength.

We are 3-0and are looking at a very promising season

if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Any changes in regards to Reggie would only be to make it look like now it’s justifiable to pay him huge money. We are winning, he’ll earn his money, don’t change courses when everything is working fine.

I always looked at Lance Moore as our Wes Welker. Kinda similar, huh?

by dmcgoey on Oct 1, 2009 7:28 AM CDT reply actions

Just Saying...

If he would line up in Wes Welkers position would he be a pro-bowler like Wes? Just a topic for discussion. Wes had over 110 catches for 1100 yards. I just think Reggie could fill that slot but thats a good point that Lance is more like our Wes Welker.

by Drew D on Oct 1, 2009 8:20 AM CDT reply actions

some reaction, huh?

I was actually trying to answer the hypothetical, but wasn’t direct about it. I think the answer is no, because his strength lies in the fact that he can line up in so many different positions. If he were restricted to being just a wide out, it would reduce his effectiveness. He might put up somewhat bigger numbers on the receiving stat line, but not nearly enough to go Pro Bowl.

It’s probably next to impossible for any Saints receiver to make it to the Pro Bowl simply because Drew spreads it around so much. No one receiver is going to have a 1300+ yd season in that situation. Even Colston’s biggest year (2007), he was 8th in receptions and yards, 7th in TDs.

good answer

Not everyone see’s the value of Bush as a break away runner or receiver. Watch other teams key on him and you will see his value, they know he can break it on any play.
Is he a up the middle kind of runner, no. He never will be but that doesn’t decrease his value on the team

Don't slots get hit, BIG?

How many games would he play in the slot? REALLY?

This is OUR year!! Yea, I said it. Who Dat!!!

by Big and Easy on Oct 1, 2009 8:54 AM CDT reply actions

Have you watched him block to protect Brees?

He is tough…he can handle the hits. I think that anybody who questions his value really needs to look at how the defense has to account for him, the fact that his blocking is lights out right now, and he did average almost 5.0 yards per carry last game. In fact his ypc has increased every game (as did his carries). It is hard as a RB to do well without getting the ball consistently, but he doesn’t complain and he goes out and does everything he is asked to. That said, I hope that Harper is returning punts soon because he was lights out in the preseason. Plus maybe that will help Bush to keep from getting injured again this season.

I'm not ready for Harper yet

Bush was lot better last game than the other ones. I’d rather see Harper on kickoff returns. IDK why we signed Roby back. He isn’t even very good at returning kicks.

y'all are seeing a different game than I am

If Payton put Bush is a number 31 uniform with Johnson on the back, ran him 10 play, y’all would be begging for “Johnson” to be pulled from the game.

No

I just think that he’s taking touches away from productive players so that the front office can fill better about spending 60 milllion dollars on a part time special teams player. Look, I would have drafted him, too. I was excited, and try to continue to be excited, but the day comes when the team needs to move on. Give players that have shown promise more touches, regardless of the salary and draft position. I understand the loyalty that the majority of Saints fans feel toward, what was our hope in the face of the franchise, but

What I meant by that is this, if you didn’t know that Reggie was in that uniform, you would be more objective. I would love for Reggie to be the star, but so far, I don’t see it. But to clarify, I just want the best for the team, no hatin’ going on here. Love the guy, just wish he would produce.
