New Orleans Saints Announce Roster Cuts

The Times-Pic has just released the full list of New Orleans Saints players who were cut today. Including Joey Harrington and Adrian Arrington, whose names were released earlier today, those players are:

Position

Player

WR Courtney Roby
WR Skyler Green
WR Matt Simon
RB  P.J. Hill
RB Herb Donaldson
LB Anthony Waters
DT DeMario Pressley
G Tim Duckworth
CB Danny Gorrer
DT Early Heyman
TE Martrez Milner
TE Jermey Parnell
DE Paul Spicer
G/T Anthony Davis
T Michael Brown
C Digger Bujnoch
G Nate Bennett
S Chip Vaughn placed on IR

The only surprises here are the release of Paul Spicer, DeMario Pressley and Anthony Waters. Can't say we didn't see Chip Vaughn being placed on IR. He's just missed too much time for a rookie this pre-season. Chris Reis, Jonathan Casillas, Buck Ortega, Leigh Torrence and Rod Harper all survived the cut and have made the squad.

Star-divide

Here's a look at how the 53-man roster looks now:

Offense

Position Player Player Player Player Player Player
QB Drew Brees Mark Brunell
RB Pierre Thomas Reggie Bush Mike Bell Lynell Hamilton
FB Heath Evans
WR Marques Colston Robert Meachem Lance Moore Devery Henderson Rod Harper
TE Jeremy Shockey Darnell Dinkins Buck Ortega David Thomas
C Jonathan Goodwin Nick Leckey
G Carl Nicks Jamar Nesbit Jahri Evans
T Jammal Brown Jon Stinchcomb Zach Strief Jermon Bushrod

Defense

Position Player Player Player Player Player Player Player
DE Will Smith Charles Grant Bobby McCray Jeff Charleston Anthony Hargrove
DT Sedrick Ellis Kendrick Clancy Remi Ayodele
LB Jonathan Vilma Scott Fujita Scott Shanle Jo-Lonn Dunbar Jonathan Casillas Troy Evans Marvin Mitchell
CB Jabari Greer Tracy Porter Malcolm Jenkins Randall Gay Leigh Torrence
SS Roman Harper Pierson Prioleau Chris Reis
FS Darren Sharper Usama Young

Special Teams

Position Player Player
Kicker John Carney Garrett Hartley
Punter Thomas Morstead
Long Snapper Jason Kyle

You'll notice the depth chart contains Will Smith, Charles Grant and Garrett Hartley, all three of whom are suspended for the first four games of the season. They will not count against the 53-man roster during those games, so at least two players (David Thomas was brought in) will need to be signed to take their place in the interim. It appears the Saints are light at the defensive tackle spot so I would hope to see one of those signings be used on that position.

This is interesting

Saints trade future draft choice for New England TE David Thomas.

Rotoworld says this:
Saints acquired TE David Thomas from the Patriots in exchange for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick.
New England also acquired blocking TE Michael Matthews from the Giants for a late-rounder in 2011 and released Alex Smith. Thomas, 26, was banged up throughout his first two seasons, but has soft hands and can stretch the field. He’s a very nice insurance policy behind starter Jeremy Shockey.

So much for my fanpost guessing they would grab Michael Matthews. I was close though because the Patriots grabbed Matthews right before trading Thomas.

I guess so

It’s the usual way of describing someone when the ball doesn’t habitually clank off his hands.

I just hope he doesn’t have brittle bones. Mark Campbell had “soft hands”…and got hurt every time he made a catch.

Is that right? They traded a pick not in next year’s draft but two years from now?

If there is a draft in 2011

Apparently it will be anarchy and marshall law in that uncapped 2010 year, so all bets are off after that – HA! Owners might even be burning the wood from players’ lockers to stay warm then…

Even if there is a lockout it would not occur until after the draft so there will be one in 2011. Whether anybody gets to play that year is what’s up in the air, not the status of the draft.

Spicer and Coleman

The wise veterans for the DL apparently didn’t have enough to stay on the team. I guess the fact that Hargrove was such a pleasant AWESOME pick-up that we didn’t need them.

I voted for Demario as the biggest surprise, but I’m not all that strong in my feelings about my vote since he hadn’t been mentioned very much in practice reports, and not at all in preseason game reports.

Practice Squad Eligibility

According to league policy, only certain types of players are allowed to sign to the practice squad. Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team’s squad unless that team’s active roster never dips below 53 players.

Also of interest, if there’s no CBA next season, there won’t be a practice squad either.

I think he might have been referring to the fact that “stashing” somebody on the PS doesn’t keep them out of the other team’s clutches. There’s a potential for it to backfire if you end up needing their roster spot for something else quickly, but you can sign a player from any team’s PS at any time (including your own).

Hate to see Roby go

though there’s probably a bajillion little fast guys out there. Biggest surprise is probably Leckey making the team after Friday night’s performance. Why do you keep him over Bennett, who can play two positions? I’m hoping that’s temporary. Ortega will probably be waived and resigned every other week again this season, as they shuffle new players in. Ayodele looked pretty good Friday. Why isn’t Sobomehin mentioned? I like Sobomehin, too. He reminds me of Buford Jordan. Tough upright runner, fairly versatile. Evans is getting up there in age and only signed a two year contract. Maybe they liked him enough to tell him to roll over and play dead for a year. I’m sure stuff like that goes on all over the league.

The Spicer cut really surprised me

3 full time DE’s on the squad, 4 if you count Hargrove.
AA was hurt too often. He can impress all he wants during practice, but he’s always hurt, he is of no use to us.
Harper can return kicks and catch, making Roby expendable.
I trust the powers that be.

Smith, Grant not suspended...

yet at least. Check this out:

Saints defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant will apparently remain on the active roster until a federal appeals court rules on their case against the NFL. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said the league has not placed the players on the reserve-suspended list yet, so the team is preparing as if they are eligible, for the time being.

“We’ll be prepared either way,” said Loomis, who said the league has not offered the Saints any timetable for making a decision this week.

I wish they would just serve their damn suspensions and get it over with. They could have had this over and done with last year when it was apparent to practically everyone but the mathematicians that they weren’t making the playoffs. Is a four game stretch going to get any easier than Weeks 1-4?

If it’s unavoidable, I’d rather them get it out of the way during weeks 1-4 when the schedule doesn’t look so hard to manage. Maybe it isn’t a done deal that the league will win this one after all. It probably is, though.

when it’s not four of your game checks.

I don’t expect them to just gracefully bend over and allow the NFL to ream them a new one. But if the NFL is going to do it anyway, I’m with cp…I wish it would just be the first four games. Maybe if we took up a collection for them, they’d be more willing to stand down?

Well… they were drug users.

Yeah I know it wasn’t intentional. Assuming they are telling the truth of course, but I do actually believe them. I know full well just how completely untrustworthy the average label is these days. Which is sick on so many levels it’s not even remotely funny.

But they still did actually do it.

I also still believe that even if they are forced to serve their suspensions the NFL should be given a MUCH larger “slap on the wrist” for failing to inform people of a tainted supplement that they knew was tainted. I don’t care how much they “aren’t required” to do so. And they shouldn’t be required to test every supplement out there. But when one comes to their attention and they KNOW about it and they DON’T try to tell everybody? And this is OK? Where’s my flabbergasted font when I need it…

by FriarBob on Sep 5, 2009 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

This smacks of the league screwing the Saints a little

It seems inevitable that these suspensions will be upheld, and the Saints have been forced to prepare for it all offseason. That got us Hargrove, on the bright side, but not being able to put Smith and Grant on the reserve/suspended list now cost us 2 players that we may need when the NFL hands down it’s “final ruling”. It’s not like we’re losing the best and brightest. Coleman and Pressley will both probably be around in a week. But it takes away any waiver acquisition leverage we would have during the busy weekend. Then, a couple days from opening day, we’ll all of a sudden be “officially” down to 51 men on the roster. Then we’ll be digging through the already raided scraps of the league to find 2 D-linemen that will in all likelihood have to play at least a few downs per game. It’s a small thing, but it could end up costing.

somehow I think they should have kept Arrington.

Maybe they should have at some of Grant’s contract, kept Arrington and picked up some journeyman DE. Or, cut Troy Evans and signed Zach Thomas or someone else as a backup if they could get him cheap. They should have found a way to keep Arrington unless they can keep him on the practice squad. Ditto for Pressley. Also, that Leonard Pope idea sounded good.

But that was the same year we netted Sedrick Ellis, Tracy Porter, and Carl Nicks. A 50% starter-to-bust ratio isn’t really bad.

Besides…they’ve been pretty good at attracting free agents, especially undrafted ones. Pierre Thomas, Lance Moore, Rod Harper, Jo-Lonn Dunbar, Anthony Hargrove, Jonathan Casillas…that’s a lot of good free agents who chose the Saints.

does anyone know how it works re: practice squad signing

are these players automatically eligible to get picked by other teams, or, in the case of younger players, do we have the right to sign them to practice squad first? How about the three spots that may be occupied by suspended players- shouldn’t we be able to fill them with others – maybe Spicer or Pressley- or could we lose them in this interim period? anyone know about this “exemption thing” that the Eagles are using so Vick doesn’t count towards the 53 man limit??

by Philinwood on Sep 5, 2009 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry, misunderstood the question.

Grant and Smith are apparently appealing their suspensions. Yes, Spicer and Pressley could both be resigned while they’re suspended, as they won’t be part of the 53 man roster. But not until those suspensions go into affect. So, they’re both in limbo for the time being, along with Grant and Smith.

Under the current NFL Practice Squad Rules, any player who is under contract on a scout team is free to sign a player contract with any team in the league, without compensation to the franchise whose practice squad he is a member of. However, the signing must be completed at least six days before the signing team’s next game (10 days in the case of a bye week).

Pressley’s eligible for the practice squad, Spicer isn’t. The exemption is actually a reserve-suspended list, meaning that neither would be eligible for that.

Arrington still eligible for practice squad??

also, if a player is on the practice squad / scout team- and some other team offers him a contract, would the team he is currently practicing with have the option to better the offer? I would think usually that player, being a member of that particular organization, would divulge the presence of an offer and then the practice squad team he is with would have the option to try and sign him so as not to lose him. ?? Does that happen? Something tells me practice squad players usually stay put with that organization during that season, but I am not sure.

no rights of first refusal, nothing. They’re basically UFAs collecting a small check, which is not based on their contract. It’s a set amount. The contract is voided upon the waiver. Of course, it would be up to the individual player whether or not they signed with another team or not. If the team whose practice squad he’s on offered him a roster spot for comparable money, he’s not likely to leave, as he already knows the playbook. But the opportunity to start might be better. Or he might like the new city better. Maybe it’s a better place to raise his family. It’s basically all the same factors any other UFA weighs out each February.

Available free agents as of now

Matt Bryant of Tampa Bay. Payton eventually wants to collect all 32 kickers, so here’s another one he can add to his collection.

Tyler Palko is available again. So is David Patten.

Jeff Garcia is available. He may be a better option than Brunell…but I don’t think I could stand watching his little-girl throwing motion in a Saints uniform, even if he does toss a score.

Let’s see…Dominic Rhodes is available…Alex Smith is available, if we want another tight end (maybe San Francisco can sign him and have a competition with Alex Smith to see who is the better quarterback…I’m betting on Alex Smith)…Corey Ivy, Rod Hood, and Deltha O’Neal are all out of work now, for those who still need to change their pants every time another cornerback becomes available…

Who else?

Garcia is an excellent backup. He’s reached the playoffs with three different teams filling in for an injured starter. He probably should start in Oakland, to give Jamarcus a chance to reset under better conditions. I’d love to get him as our backup. All my fears of a Breesless offense would subside, as Garcia has spent his entire career proving he can dig wins out of bad situations.

by FuSoYa on Sep 5, 2009 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

the problem is

he doesn’t sit quietly and accept his position. That’s one thing in Oakland where maybe he could start, quite another thing here.

by SaintBevo on Sep 6, 2009 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Tyler Palko would do that

maybe he’d be a better backup, until he actually had to play a game. I don’t think Garcia would have much ground to stand on suggesting he deserved a starting spot on the same team as Brees. But if Brees had to come out for a week or more, Garcia, unlike his meeker brethren, might actually win games he started.
As far as whining is concerned, tell me that Tampa has managed to field anyone better at QB since refusing for a year and a half to get behind Garcia, and I’ll accept that he didn’t have a valid point about deserving the job. Gruden treated him like a redheaded stepchild for no reason that I could see as a member of the uninformed public. And San Fransisco hasn’t fared any better, for that matter. The last time they sniffed the playoffs was with Garcia at the helm.

by FuSoYa on Sep 6, 2009 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

There’s a huge difference between being competitive and being a rebel rouser. And even if he DID feel like he should start, so effing what? It would be the same situation as any other position. If Brees suddenly slipped into a major funk, you’d at least have a capable QB who could pull the team out of it. If he suffers a serious injury, you have someone confident enough in his own game to think of himself as deserving all along. There’s nothing wrong with any of that. The one other time Brees was pushed, his game elevated considerably. As long as he’s DESERVEDLY entrenched as the starter, what can it hurt? As good as he’s been, maybe all we’re seeing is the tip of the iceburg. Worst case scenario, Payton gets sick of hearing Garcia whine about playing time (read: won’t happen) and brings in someone else with more upside than Brunell and we’re back to square one. Even then, we’re certainly no worse for the wear in the meantime.

Isn’t a Carmella Decesare / Kim Kardashian photo op at the team Christmas party worth ANY amount of descension a 39 year old backup QB could muster?

Can’t kill the Raiders for dumping Garcia. Not happy camper plus anyone actually watch his december in Tampa? Ugly, not just on defense.

The Panthers just released Kevin Kaesviharn after he’d only been with them for a week and a half. Let’s go get him……….NOT!

Just a thought

Is it just me or does the depth chart resemble that of a 3-4 more than a 4-3 ? I mean five DEs, three DTs and seven LBs ! Just wondering.

by WhoDat_OH on Sep 5, 2009 8:16 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

good point

serially, what’s up with the overabundance of LBs?

by jful on Sep 5, 2009 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Good Lord

DT is THIN. I hope they pick up a couple DT’s or put Pressley on the Practice Squad.

I think Arrington, Donaldson, and Hill will also make the Practice Squad, although I have a feeling some other teams will be after those 3 particular guys.

by Jee on Sep 5, 2009 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

Hargrove should be listed as a DT

He can play either position, but he’s probably going to be starting beside Ellis.

Agree'd

I think Hargrove is the only reason we only kept 3 DT’s

by vicvega26 on Sep 5, 2009 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Hargrove goes both ways effectively.

During suspensions, he can fill in for Grant, after, he’s a very productive DT, and may end up with Clancy’s job by year’s end.

by FuSoYa on Sep 5, 2009 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Grant's and Smith's suspensions are being contested by the NFLPA.

Because of the Williams’ cases in Minnesota and a state law that opposes the NFL drug testing policy somehow. The Williams’ cases are being contested in Minnesota on those grounds now if my recollection serves me correcty. So even though it was settled once in Federal Court once. It’s now back on the state of Minnesota. So the NFLPA stepped in for all the other players elsewhere in the case based on the fact that they all faced the same suspensions for the same substance (aka. StarCaps Gate). Not sure just how that will effect Duece though.

Unfortunately his situation doesn’t change if I’m reading things right. If he’s not on somebody’s roster at the start of the season he loses his vested veteran status.

I’m thinking that it would be smart for him to pull a farve and retire with no intention of staying retired after the final decision comes down in the case. This would allow him to avoid losing his veteran status (I think) and he could then unretire if the court decision was favorable (or even if it was not for that matter).

I'm most surprised about Parnell

This guy tried like every position to get on the team. How did he not find a place on the roster? Has he tried center yet?

Are we really only going to have one backup for Brees?

Two QB’s seems a little risky to me.

Practice squad signings

on Saints official website—

Those that have agreed to terms to the practice squad are WR Adrian Arrington, G Tim Duckworth, CB Danny Gorrer, RB P.J. Hill, T Jermey Parnell, DT DeMario Pressley and WR Matt Simon.

Glad to see AA, Gorrer, Hill, Parnell, and Pressley didn’t get snatched up by anyone else—good to know their potential is still there for us (esp AA and Pressley in terms of draft choices)

by jful on Sep 6, 2009 4:08 PM CDT reply actions

hehe

“Hill and Donaldson are gonna be snatched up immediately!” I know it could still happen, but r c a should be sweating a lil bit right now. There seems to be a serious oversaturation of talent at most positions in the NFL right now. I bet you could put together at least 3 or 4 semi-competitive expansion teams with all of these guys slipping through the cracks.
