New Orleans Saints Reportedly Trade with Patriots for TE David Thomas
No...not the guy from Wendy's.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports, per Twitter, that the Saints have given up a 2011 draft pick to acquire tight end David Thomas from the New England Patriots.
At least one Pats trade at tight end -- David Thomas goes to New Orleans for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick .
Following the news of Billy Miller's season-ending surgery, this move should be no surprise at all. The Pats other tight end, Ben Watson, appears to have made their team.

7th round pick in 2011
per the Times-Pic. I can live with giving up a 7th rounder in two years for this guy. He’s mostly gonna be a backup anyway. I’ve got no problem with this move. Now, I’m anxious to see who they bring in for D-line depth. Their cuts today seem to suggest they are looking into doing that.

Please don't tell me
that we TRADED for a guy who was on the verge of being cut anyway. Please.

Thomas, 26, was banged up throughout his first two seasons, but has soft hands and can stretch the field. He’s a very nice insurance policy behind starter Jeremy Shockey.
Dec. 8 – 9:59 am et
Drafted in the third round in 2006, there were once high hopes for Thomas after a solid start to his rookie year. But he hasn’t been the same since breaking his foot in April 2007.

HOOK 'EM
I’ve kind of lost track of him in the NFL (although I do remember seeing an occasional highlight on NFL countdown and such) but he was a great player at Texas. Leader and real glue guy. Vince Young’s favorite target in UT’s championship year, I think he caught 10 balls in the Championship game. He was a solid blocker, great receiver and very clutch. Always seemed to get open when you needed him to. I think he should be a good complement to Shockey and a nice addition to 2 and 3 TE sets.
Bernard Pollard of the Chiefs was released?
Are we looking for a safety since Chip Vaughn has landed on the IR?
Pollard plays like Roy Williams, we don't need that (no Roman Harper comments here, please)
rotoworld.com:
Chiefs waived SS Bernard Pollard.
Another failed Herm Edwards/Carl Peterson high pick, Pollard struggled in coverage throughout his three-year stint in K.C. He’s an explosive hitter, though, and could help a team as an in-the-box safety. With only a $530,000 salary, Pollard shouldn’t clear waivers.

Eagles released TE Matt Schoebel
he’s not bad, no superstar…but might be able to help Saints .. surprised they released him, they are thin at TE- must be thinking they can pick someone up- maybe they wer thinking Dave Thomas

He IS bad
Rotoworld.com:

Eagles released TE Matt Schobel.
It’s a bad sign for Schobel considering how thin the Eagles are at tight end.
Aug. 8 – 1:20 pm et
Eagles TE Matt Schobel has been sidelined by a calf injury throughout training camp.
May. 2 – 9:00 am et
Matt Schobel strained his hamstring during a workout Friday.
Schobel is doubtful to make a splash this season. He’s been unimpressive since the Eagles brought him over from Cincinnati in 2006 and may get cut during camp.
Mar. 27 – 11:54 am et
Kris Wilson is expected to replace Matt Schobel as the Eagles’ No. 3 tight end.
Schobel hasn’t done much since signing from Cincinnati in 2006. The Birds might bring him to training camp, but he’s likely to be cut at some point.

In case you haven't noticed
Rotoworld puts a negative spin on practically every player when they’re released, and a positive spin on them when they’re re-signed by another team. There’s a bit more to player evaluation than a two sentence abstract. Take Leonard Pope, for example. Based on a handful of Rotoworld summaries, you’ve concluded that he’s not worth pursuing. Who was the last successful TE in Arizona? Just off the top of your head. I’m not saying they’re not an informative source, you just seem to rely on them far too heavily when forming opinions on players.

Gotta get Stu's back here
Sure, Rotoworld isn’t the no. 1 expert source out there, but who is? I also like their little condensed reports, which are based on the first-hand reporting of team beat writers, most of whom are regularly on site and in camp to see these players with their own eyes. In case you haven’t noticed c-p, your little post here comes off as being excessively condescending.

There is no “no. 1 expert source”. That’s my entire point. You should gather your information from multiple sources — including actually watching the players (as opposed to starting informative threads entitled “Who the Hell is Lynell Hamilton?!?!!” for example) — and form you own opinions based on all of that. I’m sure I could go back and pull up negativity on practically every veteran Saints player the team has signed in the last three or four years, based on their final days with their prior team. Few players get released because they’re doing well. It’s borderline assinine to round up a bunch of posts in that particular light, then nail down a player as worthwhile or not. Different systems make a huge difference. Competition level makes a huge difference. You can’t tell me Kurt Warner has been equally (in)effective for every team he’s played for. I wonder what Rotoworld had to say about “injury prone bust” Charles Woodson in Oakland or “undrafted roster fodder” Priest Holmes, after he sat on the shelf four seasons in Baltimore. Nope, don’t want em. Garbage.

Sorry if that came off as excessively condescending, btw. I had no idea that condescension had guidelines.

Leave him alone!
How dare you question is "savoir-vivre"? Just because we’re unworthy to share the same blog doesn’t give us the right to teach him good manners. Who are we to do his dad’s job anyway…
The man is not only THE light in my clouded sky as a long time deceived Saints’ fan, but I’m already praising him as an example to my 18 years old kid :
-…but dad, isn’t it a bad idea to join a new crowd and go from being an exceptionnal asset to a pumpous ass within 2 months?
-It is but don’t worry about it. Since you’ll have to move around quite a bit because of your incurable attitude, you’ll meet a lot of people. Who knows, you might even make boot-licking friends on the way. And if you grow tired of them, just mention Donte…
- Think humouring my act a bit would help?
- For sure. Just don’t go around showing your lack of it by recycling other people material. Now how about another drink?
Just get the D going!
Don't the Saints seem worse at working the waiver wire than other teams?
Also, with undrafted free agents it seems like we’re never the ones who get anything. Why is that?
This was a pointless trade. Would rather have kept the pick and brought in anyone…because this guy is just going to last a season anyway.
I don't know if we
get more or less value out of waiver acquisitions than anyone else, but of all PayLoo’s front office antics, their UFA record seems pretty good to me. Our startng RB was undrafted(I don’t know if that illustrates their talent at scouting, or our comparative weakness at the position, but PT seems promising). They dug Rod Harper out of the arena league. Casillas was undrafted. I’m not sure, but I think Moore was undrafted. I feel like I’m missing a few, but considering the low likelihood of finding a gem in the undrafted rabble, I think we do alright.
As far as the tight end is concerned, I think Matthews from NY made more sense, but they kept Dinkins, so I hope his injury goes away soon, and he will be our blocking TE. Thomas was a very reliable catching TE in college, and not a bad blocker. He seems like a reasonable replacement for Miller. In the Saints offense, I think he could end up standing out, if the chips fell his way. His bum leg worries me more than his ability. The Saints have seen enough Crystal Cams already.
Pay-Loo may not be the best
but things could be worse. Look at the Raiders and Mad Al. He just gave up a 2011 first round pick ( probably top 5-10) for 30 year old Richard Seymour !! So don’t complain too much. Things could always be worse !

I feel a lot better
about Courtney Roby’s release, now that Yamon Figurs has been given his pink slip. Basically the same player, less half a second in the 40. As long as there’s fall back guys with that kind of speed out there, we should be fine in the kickoff return department.
