QB Chase Daniel not signing with Skins practice squad going to New Orleans instead

2006 In 2006, Daniel started all 13 games as Missouri earned a berth in the Brut Sun Bowl. He threw for 3,527 yards with a 63.5 percent completion rate and 28 touchdowns. Daniel also set a school record for passing touchdowns in a game, racking up five scores in the season opener against Murray State. This was good enough for a Second Team All-Big 12 selection while he also was named to the First Team All-Academic Big 12 Team. Daniel is also one of the 35 quarterbacks placed on the 2007 Manning Award watch list.[2] 2007 Daniel takes a snap in the first quarter of the 2007 Mizzou vs. Nebraska football game.In 2007, Daniel improved even more stunningly, throwing for 4,306 yards with a 68.2% completion rate and 33 touchdowns, with only 11 interceptions in 14 games. He also rushed for a net 253 yards and four touchdowns for a total offense of 37 touchdowns and 4,559 yards, almost 326 yards per game. On Jan. 1, 2008, Missouri wrapped up a school-best 12-2 season with a 38-7 win over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. A week later, the Tigers were ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press' final poll - the highest final ranking in school history - and No. 5 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. Daniel also announced he was returning for his senior season after putting his name in with the NFL College Advisory Committee to receive feedback for the NFL Draft. On November 27, 2007, the Big 12 Conference named Daniel the Offensive Player of the Year. He is the first Missouri player to be named to that honor.[3] On Dec. 5, 2007, Chase was invited by the Heisman Trophy Trust to go to New York City as one of four finalists. He eventually finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting with 425 points. He garnered 25 first-place votes, 84 second-place votes, and 182 third-place votes. He became only the third Tiger to ever finish in the top-10. His fourth-place showing marks the second-highest finish in Heisman voting by a Tiger player, with Paul Christman the only one to finish higher (third in 1939). 2008 In the 2008 preseason, Daniel was named one of 26 candidates for the 2008 Unitas Award, given to the nation's best senior college football quarterback.[4] Daniel continued to break virtually all Mizzou passing records, and in a two-game span against Southeast Missouri State and Nevada, he actually threw more touchdowns (seven) than he did incomplete passes (six). Daniel recently appeared on the front of ESPN the Magazine with fellow teammate Chase Patton. Daniel recently donned #25 in honor of fallen teammate Aaron O'Neal. O'Neal died before beginning his freshman year during practice in July 2005, and would have been a senior this year. The number is rotating among the senior class this season. He became the Missouri career total offense yardage leader on December 6, with 13,256. He moved ahead of Brad Smith (13,088).

I was a little sad to see Harrington go

But this is an upgrade. The main knock on him that kept him from being a first day draft pick is that he isn’t tall enough to play QB. But that’s what they said about Drew Brees too. So now we have a physically gifted QB that’s young enough to be coached up and be a really good player down the road. I like it.

this is an upgrade.

It’s a downgrade. Joey can actually take a snap from center. Height is only one factor in Chase’s shortcomings. See here and do CTRL+F to search for the word “shotgun”.

"Joey can actually take a snap from center"

As can Chase Daniel. He’s #10 in the video. Don’t let the Missouri Tiger haters detract from your objectivity.

I like it

I have no reason not to.

  • I have faith that even if he may not be that adept to take snaps from center right now, does not mean he can not learn how.
  • If there is someone to model and learn from, it’s Drew. Especially with their size similarities.
  • Sean Payton is on to something with his offensive style. (Please save the effectiveness of the Airshow argument for some other post). Bottom line, he relies heavily on the QB, I think he relies very heavily on execution. I think Daniel fits that mold well.
  • I think we are in an ideal time frame to pick up a “project”, and we could strike out with this guy in a couple years, and still be OK.

The Redskins are desperate for a QB since Jason Campbell is on the way out. Ex-reasonably successful NFL QB Jim Zorn had plenty of time to evaluate Colt Hawaiian and Chae Daniel. He kept the hurt one and dumped the loser with the giant ego. He didn’t keep both to see which one might develop faster or better as if it was a close contest: He dumped The Tiger. Dumped. Not needed for the Skins practice squad.

Meanwhile ex-NFL replacement player Sean Payton, who developed Tony Romo maybe kinda sorta and failed with all his other “prospects”, picks Choltse up off the trash heap and gives him a home and, cruelly, some hope that he can someday play in a regular season NFL game. That’s where we’re at. Feel good about it if you must, but don’t hold your breath.

Sean Payton and Drew Brees are going to make me a star.

"Dumped. Not needed for the Skins practice squad."

Daniel was WAIVED, not cut. You must WAIVE someone, if you intend to sign him to the practice squad.

Regarding Brennan’s IR designation:

“He was going to miss some substantial time,” executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. “The hip seems to cause him hamstring problems.”

The moves leave the Redskins with two quarterbacks — starter Jason Campbell and veteran Todd Collins — although Daniel said he expects to get a spot on the practice squad if he clears waivers. Teams can establish an eight-man practice squad Sunday.

“I think a lot of teams are doing that this year,” Cerrato said of the two-quarterback plan. “We’ll put one on the practice squad, so we’ll have three, and [receiver] Antwaan Randle El can go in and finish a game as well any third quarterback.”

Brennan was already on IR. Who was Cerrato referring to in the last paragraph, if not Daniel? I see no other QB on their practice squad. Hmm. The Redskins obviously wanted to stash him for future development, just as the Saints did. He’s here by CHOICE.

All you Colt Daniels fans

Get over in line with Chip What’s His Name’s Dad, who told us by this time we’d all be bowing down in awe of his son’s awesomeness by now; and with the guy who said PJ Hill’s awesome intangibles would cause him to leap far ahead and beyond his competition to the starting lineup sooner rather than later if we would only wait and see… And I’m mercifully leaving Joey Heatherington (good one M-E) out of this, because I kinda believed that one myself.

Nothing wrong with a true prospect that needs some grooming, except if he’s from Missouri and had to buy a second plane ticket for his ego. Have you seen his hot girlfriend?

Sean Payton and Drew Brees are going to make me a star.

I didn't smoke the Chip Hill crack

And I thought Joey deserved a shot. But it didn’t work out, oh f-in well. If it doesn’t you let him go. That’s the beauty of the whole thing, we CAN afford to do that. And if Payton and Loomis like him, then I think it’s worth a shot.

Daniel only got in on 2 preseason games...

But he did perform well. Against Jacksonville he put up 8 out of 16 for 85 yards, 1 TD and one sack. Against Pittsburgh he was 6 for 8 for 58 yards, 2 TDs and 2 sacks. So while at the helm of Redskins anemic offense, he put up 3 TDs in 2 games while Joey H could only throw for one in 4 games in control of the most potent offense in the league. Say what you want but the kid can lead a drive.

I guess living in Virginia I have a different view of it. The Redskins fans around here really liked Chase, but they LOVE Colt Brennan. Zorn would have been lynched for cutting Colt, or even hinting that Chase Danial was there to replace him. So once Brennan failed to move up to 2nd on the depth chart there really wasn’t a place for Daniel on the team.

by VAsaintsfan on Sep 7, 2009 11:37 AM CDT reply actions

exactly

Brennan is close to prototype NFL size and arm strength. He also has another year in the Redskins’ system, yet lacks the experience of Todd Collins. Daniel would have had to completely outplay Brennan in order to make the roster, if they even chose to keep three. His getting hurt made the decision a little easier, as they already have Randle El as an “unpolished gem” that won’t take up an extra roster spot. In order for an emergency QB to come in, they would have to be on the active roster and player in no other capacity, provide that player is listed as a QB on the roster. Daniel is obviously not ready to start an NFL game, so that’s all he would have been to them this year. Someone of those limitations is better served on the practice squad and that’s what they attempted to do.

All the more impressive

That he did what he did against the Stoolers. I don’t care if it was their fourth string defense it’s still going to be decent. I wish it wasn’t, I despise that team and want them to go 0-16 for the next ten years straight… but they are a very good defense and there is a reason (their DC is the bomb and they have the most outrageous luck with undrafted players even better than we do).

by FriarBob on Sep 7, 2009 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree...

The Redskins fans up here really liked Chase Daniel, like they fell in love with Colt Brennan last year in preseason, but the organization wanted to keep a veteran backup behind Jason Campbell in Todd Collins. Chase Daniel has looked good in preseason and he has an added weapon in his feet, he is deceptively fast. I am glad to see the Saints invest in a young qb, as Tyler Palko and J.T. O’Sullivan never really panned out. Hopefully Daniel can be groomed behind Brees.

Daniel barely got any reps during practice, and still played well. He will be a great understudy to Brees. Give the kid a chance.

Chase is a freaking punk and dam liar.
This kid has been made way TOO SOFT by playing football in the offensive systems that he has all the way back to high school.
He played in an offense his entire high school and college career, standing 6-7 yards behind the line of scrimmage, always in the shotgun.
He might fall down on his fat ass if he actually has to take a 5-7 step drop after lining up under center.
Then he comes into Lincoln last year, got hit maybe two or three times the entire dam game and then says Nebraska plays too rough for him and that they are dirty.
Chase is worthless punk
He isn’t near tough enough or MAN ENOUGH to play in the NFL.

Sean Payton and Drew Brees are going to make me a star.

it's not that hard

to learn how to make a 3-5 step drop. It might take some practice for him to get it down pat but he’s going to the practice squad where he can do that. If you play football, you aren’t lacking for some athleticism, especially at a skill position like QB. Cmon, you could probably teach a 300 lb lineman to take a 5 step drop. It might not be pretty, but he could probably do it. Also, Brees is undersized too. Did you watch the Lincoln game or find out if he actually took those hits? Maybe he got hit more than that and they might have actually been dirty players, hitting him after the play while they were getting back up. I just don’t find a 2nd hand account from someone i have never heard or listened to before very informative. IDK if he did or didn’t take 2 hits and cried like a baby. IDC really b/c with our O-line he probably won’t take too many shots and he’s on our practice squad. We’ll find out soon enough if he can or can’t take a hit.

Superbowl bound!!!...I hope? Go Saints! :D
