Who dat say dey gonna flip dat switch?
We dat, dat's who.
For two weeks, we've been treated to a constant refrain of doom and futility: the Saints haven't won in more than a month. In the last weeks of the season, they looked tired. Out of synch. They're finished. Their defense can't play the run, can't play the pass. Their only hope is if they can somehow "flip the switch" and return to their earlier season form.
Okay. Anything else? You want that dressed?
The Saints didn't just flip the switch...they flipped a finger right in the face of the football media. They made it look easy. And they looked exactly like the team that scared the bejeebus out of the entire league for the first half of the season. Put heavy duty springs on the bandwagon, because it's about to take on a lot of return passengers.
I truly feel sorry for the pundits now. What are they going to write about now? The return of Deuce is no longer the biggest story on this team. It could be the emergence of The Real Reggie. Or the return of the G-Dub defense. Or the revenge of Drew Brees--passed over by that same media for MVP honors in what was essentially a panic dump-off to hot read Peyton Manning. Brees only exceeded Kurt Warner's passer rating by about fifty points. No biggie. He's probably disappointed in his performance.
Anyway, this is beyond question my favorite form of Saints game: I get to watch their Ferrari offense taking curves in 5th gear, without undue tension. I'll take two more, please. Dressed.
Randomly ordered game notes
• Reggie Bush was awesome. As good as Drew was, this is the first time this season he's been unequivocally beaten out as the game MVP. This was the Reggie we thought we'd see every game when he was drafted; but I forgive him for all the frustration of the last couple years if he can just keep it up for two more games.
Even without that beautiful 46-yard TD, Reggie was averaging over 9 yards a carry. He added 4 catches for 24 yards--and, of course, one magnificent punt return through the heart of the Cardinals. And I mean that like, a stake.
• The running game in general was awesome. Six different rushers gained 174 yards on 31 carries: 5.6 yards per rush. Lynell Hamilton had a 4.6 average; Pierre Thomas, a 4.0. Only Mike Bell suffered through a sub-par day...but he would have had a pretty 7-yard TD if it hadn't been called back.
• Kurt Warner didn't look anywhere close to magical out there today. Yes, he was getting more pressure from the Saints. Yes, our secondary was doing a better job with coverage. And yes, he didn't have the luxury of a scout game the week before. Still: this is a guy who has the reputation of a playoff god, and he couldn't get it done. Was he having an off day? Or is the Saints defense really that much better?
• The officiating was, I thought, pretty good overall. Ron Winters' crew seemed to be in full playoff mode: Let 'em play. I saw several calls that weren't made--for instance, a rather severe blow to the head by Jonathan Vilma on the Saints' first sack. But that was nothing other than karma payback for the head blow/face mask that wasn't called on Adams against Green Bay the previous week. And speaking of blows to the head...
• Why do defenders keep doing it? Darren Sharper lost a very nifty interception, in which he had to make an excellent play on the ball and then keep his concentration to pull the ball back in after losing it while going down. Just a beautiful job of eye-hand coordination to snatch a speeding spheroid out of the air.
Why, then, can't blitzers control their hands? Time and again, they come down on top of a quarterback's helmet...which is even bigger than a football, and more stationary. If Sharper can make that play downfield, why can't Shanle keep enough concentration not to whack Warner on the head?
• Jabari Greer did his best imitation of the Invisible Man. Where was he? Why did I never hear his name called? Because they rarely challenged him, that's why. He is probably an even more significant free agent pickup than Darren Sharper to this defense, and the return of Greer and Porter to the starting lineup is the change that will catapult this team into Landshark Stadium.
• The two nicest drives of the whole game may have been the ones that didn't result in scores. First, the Cardinals took the ball on the Saints' 20, down 45-14 after Bush's punt return TD. They marched methodically downfield to the Saints' 17...and couldn't finish. Warner's fourth down pass fell incomplete and the Saints' D had another critical stop.
On the ensuing possession, they took over on the 10 and ran out the clock on the third quarter. Then they proceeded to rip off three more first downs and 45 more yards, killing half the final quarter before handing the ball back almost contemptuously to the Cardinals on the 25 (David Thomas on 4th and 1 end-around? WTF? Then again...why the hell not?)
• For the second game in a row, I wore my Darren Sharper jersey. Since it was a Christmas present, the loss to the Panthers was my first chance to wear it, and I wondered if it might not be bad luck (they lost, after all). But I figured that it wasn't really bad luck: it was accurate. I expected the Saints to lose to the Panthers; and they did. I expected them to break the Cardinals into fragments; and they did. Since I expect them to win the Super Bowl, I think I'll continue wearing it.
* * *
• A couple addenda: First, the blackout in the Dome was pretty impressive. Every time they showed the crowd, it looked like a Mussolini rally. All hail the power of Twitter! And second: the Colts are about to eliminate the Ravens and punch their ticket to the AFC championship. And in my own humble and completely objective opinion, they could NOT hang with us. Of all the DCs in the NFL, Gregg Williams is surely smart enough and courageous enough to sell out to stop the pass. The Colts have no running game at all. A well-played 46 defense would shut them out.
I sure would like meeting them in Miami.

Hey Saints fans...
Good win, I was disappointed that some of our starting defense [Rolle, DRC] went down and it would have been a more interesting game if that didn’t happen. I just hope that Warner is okay, I don’t want his last game [if he retires, which I hope doesn’t happen since he still has a good year left in him] to be one where he got nailed like he did when he hurt his chest.
And why the hell hasn’t Reggie Bush played like that more often? He looked like he did back when he was at USC with Leinart.
Good luck with the rest of the playoffs, I’m rooting for you guys over the Cowboys/Vikings, and hopefully the Cardinals/Saints game next week will be the shootout we were expecting this one to be.

On double talking sports commentators and talking heads...
This one is a classic. I read Bill Simmons from ESPN’s NFL picks last week. He picked the Bengals over the Jets(he missed on all 4 games BTW). So this week, I am checking out his picks again and he says “I have loved the Jets as a darkhorse Super Bowl team since the beginning of the playoffs” as he picks the Jets over the Chargers. What a tool. I will give him credit for picking the Saints to win pretty handily over the Cards though.
trash talk?
what i dont understand is even with a win as large as today, the talk of the saints weak schedule is still an issue
Same thing with the '72 Dolphins
What more do you want? They went undefeated in the regular season, won the AFC Championship on the road, and then convincingly beat the best the NFC had to throw against them (it should have been a 17-0 shutout).
But still, people say the only reason it happened is that they had a weak schedule. Okay…then why hasn’t it happened since?
BURN THE BLACK PANTS!!!
Yep, I guess they had a "weak schedule" right through the Superbowl?

F--- the pundints and their momentum
95% of them have never worn a jock strap anyway. What do they know? And the former player analysts…f—- them too.
What a performance by this team. Way to come out and do what you do.
The Shanle call negating the Sharper INT was questionable at best. It’s instinct for a defender with the QB getting ready to throw to get in the air with your hands up. Hands go up, hands come down. The head is the highest point and most likely to sustain contact. It happens…I don’t blame Shanle. He didn’t even grab the face mask. The non-call last week in favor of the Cardinals was far more obvious. So in spite of the refs trying to keep the game close early, the Saints did what they had to do and made it their game. Awesome.
yeah but...
If that had been Brees instead of Warner I would have wanted that call. I think they should lighten up on that rule a little bit though. It was basically a headslap. To me the low hit on Brees was much worse and had more of a chance to cause a serious injury than the Warner headslap.

but you gotta give Wiz credit for pulling Campbell out of the game after that play and chewing him a new one.
by WhoDat_OH on Jan 16, 2010 10:58 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Part of that was probably because he didn’t want to give us any more free yardage. But also because whether he cared about the yardage (or Drew) or not, it’s the rules and it’s just plain stupid to allow yourself to forget it.
“It’s instinct for a defender with the QB getting ready to throw to get in the air with your hands up. Hands go up, hands come down. The head is the highest point and most likely to sustain contact. It happens…I don’t blame Shanle.”
I blame him. Instinct or not, by rule, you can’t initiate contact with the QB’s helmet. Period. It’s no different than incidental contact with a punter, other than the clearly defined 15 yards. If you know it’s against the rules, don’t do it. Consistency in calling such fouls is another subject all together.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Yeah. That’s the REAL problem. If every time the helmet on ANY quarterback (not just the top talents either at playing football or acting) got touched then we’d all be dumping on Shanle for being a complete idiot. But when you sometimes get away with it you sometimes forget to be that overly careful and it can bite you.
and
the non-call last week was after the QB had fumbled. Not when he was “defenseless” throwing a pass. but i’m with y’all, the rule needs to be revised.

The facemask should have been called last week, but I can understand why it wasn’t. And even if it had, it would have been Arizona’s ball, 15 yards from the point of the foul.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
“Why it wasn’t” being because the ref was too busy trying to follow the loose ball — i.e., get the possession call correct — than policing all simultaneous infractions. Understandable human error. Even if such plays were reviewable, OT challenges can only be initiated from the booth, so odds are it wouldn’t have been. There was nothing to prompt it, outside of Rodgers’s complaints.

so of the 3 famous losses
at the end of the year, the only one i found concerning was the loss to dallas. But i didn’t see the game. What did everyone think about that game?
Dallas kicked the Saints butts in that game...
The Saints struggled on offense for much of that game until the second half. Brees was hurried all game. The Saints running game was shut down basically and DAL handled the Bush/Thomas screens pretty good as well. Dallas was very balanced on offense and their delays were tough to read. Romo had good escapability vs the blitz making big plays. Romo also made no crucial mistakes but he did have some close calls on interceptions. Their RB’s ran hard behind a nasty O-line. I thought the Saints were lucky that it wasn’t a blowout, but the Saints D did just enough in the second half to give Brees a chance. Not saying the Saints would not beat them this time, but they were the best team I saw this year(other than the Saints of course).
I see it different
Dallas pressured Brees, but if you look at the game everytime our running back would try to chip Ware coming out of the back field they missed he shed them like they weren’t even there
I believe it was our poor play that beat us more then there great play
You can bet if we meet them again it will be different SP will have our backs doing blocking drills
And as bad as we played we still had a chance to win at the end
They scored 24 points on us that is close to what we have been giving up all year in a game that they needed so i see a win next week no matter who we play
Although I think MN. is the more dangerous team

Just because they won doesn´t mean the pundits are convinced!
On ESPN last night after the game they were talking about how the Saints only won because they played a team that “has no defence” and who were “beat up”. They were saying that when Minnesotta or Dallas arrive, that NO will get exposed and be hard pressed to get the same results as today. I believe it would be irrelavant if we were even to win the SB to many. They would still find excuses to justify somethig that they can´t deal with. To many it seems written in stone “The Saints were, are and always will be LOSERS! Regardless!”

Regarding pundits
Whether on the air or in print, their real job is creating controversy. So long as people are talking about them, so long as people are tuning them in or going to their websites to hear or read what they say…they win. Simple as that. It’s all about getting more eyeballs, so they can convince advertisers that it’s worth it to buy ad space.
That’s why blogs like this are so great—we can find out what those asinine retards say without having to visit their sites.
But yeah…JND is right. Someone needs to start a “criticize the critics” site. It would be great to have year-end awards for the stupidest statements made, the lousiest predictions, the most moronic analysis. Plus a special award for Joe Buck, for Dumbest Performance by an Announcer Who Knows Nothing About Football.

Commentators, high paying jobs for dummies
The commentators and so called experts get paid to do and say the things they do, they don’t care whats on the scrip they just have to say it, don’t listen to them and had the Cardinals won it would have been, after seeing what they did to GB last week and the Saints not winning in 34 days and on and on
I got tiered of hearing the Saints have not won a game in 34 day WTF and who gives a F

Let us break down the word "commentator":
Common – average, non-unique
Tater – colloquialism for “potato”, an edible tuber which grows underground
Yeah, like we should give a rat’s @$$ what these overpaid dirty starch supplies say.

Cow sh##
I swore after Thurs. I would never watch or listen to Colin Cowherd ever again, but I would love to watch that skinny, long nosed, piece of dung apologize for trashing us this past week. The problem is he won’t.

NFL Gameday Morning Sunday
Saying we don’t want Cowboys again. I don’t give a rats ass who comes to our house. They will get the same welcome as the Card’s. We will only get respect when we win it all, if then. Who cares what they say they get paid to talk because they can’t play.
"I don’t think about how good we’ve been,’’ Brees said. "I think about how good we can be.’’
By far, the best game this season
For the first time (since 2002, when I purchased my season tickets) I air-brushed a sign to show my support for our Saints. It said:
2010 Playoffs
New Year – New Season
New Meaning to the words FINISH STRONG
it begins here, it begins now
I ran all over the superdome for 2 hours trying to get it in the right spot. I have terrace level seats and placed it in the 500 section, but the draft from the AC unit flopped it around too much. Then, I put it in the endzone (terrace) and superdome officials took it down because it was partially blocking a camera. I then brought it down to the plaza level to the “gold guys” who paint themselves gold every game. They were gracious enough to put it out and even said that they would bring it back next week.
So, if the “gold guys” are on this blog….thanks! I really appreciate it.
As far as the opinions of analyst go
I think that (as fans) we need to take the approach of “who cares what everyone else thinks about us”.
Actually, I prefer it when analyst and any other media source doubt the Saints’ capabilities and critique any part of a certain game to make it as though the Saints are not as good as they played. Let them doubt us, let them say we do not have a chance. I want that. I don’t want all the hoop-wah, nor all the glory. When they do this, this gives the Saints that added fire – a chip on their shoulder. This fire can decide the outcome of games. Just look at how the media gave no chance to Chicago a few years ago. They fed off that and whipped our tails in the NFC Championship game.
BRING ON THE DOUBT, I SAY, BRING IT ON
