Favre hate? Maybe Vikings fans will understand this.
How can we hate Favre? Heck I live 15 minutes from Kiln, his hometown. And I must admit that I do wear wrangler jeans. So how can we get sick of looking at him, hearing about him?
It is the NFL analysts that have constantly bombarded us with Bret this and Bret that. I had a contest with my roommates one Monday night game. Now the Vikings were not even playing. But we started a contest, every time Brett Favre's name was mentioned we would take a shot (CROWN!!!!). Let me elaborate....
We went crabbing earlier in the day, and caught about a bushel of crabs. We brought 4 ice chests 1 full of beer and 3 bottles of wine. Two dozen crab nets, 3 fishing poles, and a cast net. We had a good day, we filled 2 ice chests full of crabs, 1 full of fish, and we had to finish off all the beer to fit the 20 pounds of shrimp in the last ice chest.
We made it back to the house just in time for the pregame show. The crabs were still feisty so we iced down the crabs and started separating them, gumbo size to freeze, and what we were going to boil. I don't remember anything after halftime or even who the Saints were playing, maybe the Falcons.
I woke up on the sofa so dehydrated, all I could think about was WATER, WATER, WATER! So I stumbled into the kitchen.Stuck my head in the kitchen sink and splashed water on my face. SNAP, SNAP.........what the.... There was a crab sitting on a dirty dish in the sink! Snapping at my face! During the night while we were all passed out in a drunken stupor. The ice on the crabs melted and the crabs woke up. Not only in the sink, there were crabs on the counter, in open drawers, on the floor in the kitchen, in the living room, down the hall, even under the sofa.
My mind shut down and I carefully made my way back to the sofa and turned on Sportscenter to find out the score of the game. Of course I had to listen to them mention Farve's name 10 more times before they announced the Saints score. And each time they mentioned Farve's name a crab would shuffle past the TV.
So that is why I am sick of Favre.

So, you are sick of the media talking about Favre, you do not actually hate Brett Favre at all
I trust you are reasonable enough to go back and reread what you just wrote, and reflect on that my statement is true.
We are all sick of aspects/excesses of the sports media. But the subjects of what they say have no responsibility for what they do.
Usually. However, Brett Favre does.

Nope, I detest the man himself.
He is a complete jerk of a human being, not the “good old boy” that the media and the NFL promote him to be. I’m speaking from direct experience, as well as the experiences of my sister who has witnessed first hand some of the self-centered, boorish, obnoxious, rude, crude, assinine behaviour from this buffoon.
The media treatment just makes me hate the MEDIA.

What’s the difference? The Brees Dream Foundation is dedicated to raising money for the children of New Orleans. What has Brees done charity wise for the city of Dallas?
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I’m sure Brett has done things for the area he grew up in also but the difference is, he still lives in the area. What does Brees and charity work for Dallas have to do with anything? Drew was born in Dallas but moved from there when he was a small kid. He grew up in Austin.
If you’re aware that he was born in Dallas, then it would seem like you’d understand how it’s tied into my counterpoint. Replace Dallas with Austin, if you’d rather nitpick. Also, go ahead and change “What’s the difference?” to “What does it matter?” Assuming he doesn’t do anything else whatsoever, Favre’s property taxes and personal spending helps support the Kiln economy. How does Brees living in New Orleans help out Austin (or wherever you want to consider “where people supported him before he made it big time”, as KilnBill phrased it)?
All I’m doing is pointing out the hyprocrisy of criticizing one and not the other. Personally, I don’t care if professional athletes give a dime of their money to anyone. It’s THEIR earnings. That’s not to say I don’t respect Brees for the extra mile he goes, I’m just not going to criticize anyone else for NOT doing the same. A donation is a gratuity, not an requirement. It should be appreciated, not expected.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I actually have considered moving to the Twin Cities in the past. Little too much white stuff for me.

Don't it's hell on earth
Hot as blazes in the summer (100 degrees 100 humidty), cold enough to make penguins shiver in the winter, and spring and fall where your like wow this should be GREAT! have swarms of mosquitos that have literally put people in teh hospital. I mean you have to live there to love it. But after I moved away I can’t say I’m all that much in a hurry to jump back.
I'm not the one nitpicking
My point was simple. Regardless of Dallas or Austin, Brees NO LONGER LIVES IN THE AREA WHERE HE GREW UP. Farve DOES LIVE IN THE AREA HE GREW UP.
If you can’t see the correlation between where one LIVES and where they are most likely to make charitable donations, I doubt anyone can explain it to you.
“I’m talking about something a little closer to home. Like maybe his high school. Where people supported him before he made it big time.”
I fully understand the difference you’re attempting to illustrate. However, if KilnBill meant “where Favre lives” then why wouldn’t he have just said “where Favre lives”? Or “where he currently resides”? As you can see in the three quoted sentences above, he didn’t say any of that. In fact, he gave specific examples of his definition of “home”. None of which apply to New Orleans (or San Diego, or West Lafayette IN) in Brees’s case.
First, it was “Favre does give to charity”. That’s proven wrong. Then, it’s “that’s not what I meant … I meant (see above)”.
Ok, then you probably should have been more specific the first time. I can get past that.
But to come back and SPECIFICALLY DEFINE “home” one way upfront, only to twist that definition after the fact, based on the parallel drawn to Brees, is nothing more than sidewinding.
Not on KilnBill’s part, mind you. He hasn’t come back with anything whatsoever, since I made the comparison BASED ON WHAT HE STATED.
Try reading the entire conversation, before you resort to buttinskisms next time.

CP - Although I've sometimes defended you in the past.....
when many others have indicated you are an arrogant ass, I’m beginning to understand where they’re coming from. You are one stubborn S.O.B.
You’re arguing a point directed at me that I NEVER MADE. Perhaps you should try “reading the entire conversation, before you resort to buttinskisms next time.”
When I made my first comment in response to yours, it had already been established that Favre had made charitable donations “a little close to home” (see puddnheads comment directly below made at 12:45 PM. My first response to you was made at 1:29 PM). The correction that Brees grew up in Austin rather than Dallas was just an aside to let you know that not everything you say is always accurate. It wasn’t meant to imply that since he didn’t grow up in “Dallas”, that your original comment was inaccurate based on a “technicality” as you assumed.
But, your response back to me was:
“OK, then you probably should have been more specific the first time. I can get over that.”
"But to come back and SPECIFICALLY DEFINE “home” one way upfront, only to twist that definition after the fact, based on the parallel drawn to Brees, is nothing more than sidewinding."
Like I said in my second response… If you don’t understand the point I was making to begin with, that’s your problem. Your other problem is that you are so quick to respond, to get the last word, and convince yourself that you are always right and no one else could ever have an intelligent thought that doesn’t agree with yours, you go off on your condescending b.s. without thinking it through first.
You conclude your second response by gloating that KilnBill “hasn’t come back with anything whatsoever, since I made the comparison BASED ON WHAT HE STATED”. Again, the condescending thing. You say that as though it should have anything to do with what I said or our subsequent exchange. Perhaps, in his absense, you thought you could make me your whipping boy? And then you come back in your second addendum and point out that I “failed to answer your question” regarding Favre’s property taxes??? First, I didn’t realize it was a question and second, what’s that got to do with what I said to begin with? You interject quotes of KilnBill at the convenience of trying to make me look inconsistent in my thought process. If KilnBill doesn’t want to repond to you, it might be because he has been around longer than me and knows better than to argue with a brick wall. But regardless, don’t take what he said to defend your argument with what I said. If you have an issue with him, take it up with him.
When I first responded to you, I had no idea that it would turn into this bizzarre exchange, but I should have known better. You are obviously and intelligent guy. You have much more knowledge of statistical minutia than I ever want to have. But you also have a good knowledge of “useless trivia” that I respect and love. I suspect you and I might have a lot in common. But, you need to get over your need to always be right about everything, to always have the last word, and to always resort to condescension anytime someone dares to disagree with you.
Altogether the overall dumbest-ass argument I've seen

In 1997, Deanna and Brett Favre began the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation. They both wanted their outreach efforts to benefit disadvantaged and disabled children. Over the last ten years, the Foundation donated in excess of $3 million to charities in Wisconsin and Mississippi and signed untold numbers of in-kind items to be used for charity auctions.
Charities supported both in Wisconsin and Mississippi include, but are not limited to, Make a Wish, Special Olympics, ARC, and the Boys & Girls Clubs.
Mission Statement
The Brett Favre 4Ward Foundation provides aid to 501c3 non-profit agencies providing services to disadvantaged and disabled children. The charity must provide services in Mississippi or Wisconsin.
This doesn’t even include what he does on behalf of his wife’s breast cancer foundation, or what he & McNair jointly organized after Katrina.
It’s kinda ironic that I have to remind someone on a Saints blog (supposedly from Kiln) about the Katrina part.
This isn't a slap at Brett's charitable work, but.....
Virtually all rich celebs, football or otherwise, have charities they create or fund. Many do so for the best of reasons. But many do it because either their manager or accountant advises them to do so.
I recall having seen a sports documentary on HBO shortly after the storm showing how a group of people from Green Bay took a week off of work, got on a chartered bus and went to Kiln to help the residents of the city their beloved quarterback came from. Large dollar donations by any celebrity pale in comparison to this sort of contribution.
Before any of our visitors get bent out of shape, I’ll say again. This is a general statement. Nothing directed at Brett specifically.
Understood
But look at what it is a reply to. It was a reply to KilnBill, who doubted Favre has ever done anything for charity.
p.s.
and perhaps i didn’t make this clear on this thread – Favre made a personal appearance for my sister’s nephew, as part of Make a Wish.
Not his accountant, not his manager.
What the hell are you talking about?

So, KilnBill
Why don’t the rest of the people living in Kiln “know the half of it” like you claim to? They don’t appear to have any of the animosity you do. Not in this TV report either.
I guess these reporters just talked to the wrong people?
My hatred of the man has nothing to do with the media coverage
He is the exact opposite of what I admire about any of the athletes I like to watch. Going back to his retirement from Green Bay, he was as selfish as anyone could possibly be. Once he retired, Green Bay drafted 2 quarterbacks in Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm. The team was preparing for life without Favre, as they should. When Favre wanted to come back, I assume he just figured the team would cut one of those guys to make room for him. He didn’t care that his indecisiveness would cost the team to waste a draft pick. And knowing that Flynn won the backup job in the end, the Packers would have been forced into making the wrong decision considering Brohm was the 2nd round pick and Flynn was the 7th rounder.
The team also made salary cap moves that would have to be drastically altered to fit him in. I don’t know the Packers salary cap situation, but even league minimum for someone that has played as long as Favre is a lot of money that they would have to take a hit on.
Favre just didn’t seem to get it. He wanted to play, and it was up to everyone else to make it happen. Don’t bother him with the details. He didn’t understand that the team had moved on, or that they actually believed him when he said he was retiring. And most of all, he didn’t care how much he hurt the team. If he did he wouldn’t have put the Packers in the position that he did.

it was insightful, and he has a lot of knowledge of that situation with Favre as he was a Pack fan when it happened. No he has forsaken the dark side and has found happiness and joy in the side of light.
He used to boil puppies, it’s true.
lol
“Boil Puppies?” Who? Favre, or me? ;)
Seriously, Grime’s right, I’m not gonna pretend I know Brett Favre or anything, but I once lived an hour from Lambeau, saw him around town numerous times & heard about him second hand even more — Green Bay is a small town of 100,000, and if you live there 16 years you simply cannot hide your true self. And I sorta knew Brian Anderson, the guy who used to fly his plane (he also had a Favre memorabilia store until he closed it last summer)
I don’t know what more can I say but that I am “three degrees” away from him in a lot of ways, and so for example I know he was golden to the Lambeau “lifers” (non-decision making administrative staff & grounds & equipment guys, you know the ones who do the mundane grunt work). They saw him regularly, & he always treated them well & he knew all their names. Go and google the video of the last time he flew out of Green Bay in 2008. Those people you see him hugging just as he’s about to get on the plane out of town for the last time? Those are grunts who work at Lambeau.
If I had to say more, it would be that I watched him raise money in his annual charity softball games, even had him buy a round for me & the rest of a bar (a LONG time ago!), and he, Chmura, and White volunteered to fulfill my sister’s nephew’s dream for Make a Wish foundation, when he had leukemia. The weird thing about Favre’s reputation in Wisconsin is that he actually has more support right now in Green Bay proper than the rest of the state — because they knew him up close, and they know better, they don’t just go by what’s the rumor or innuendo on SportsCenter.
Seemed like a decent guy to me, & many of those other Green Bay rubes. But VASaintsfan and “GSO Saints Fan”’s sister apparently knows better, due to some unexplained personal knowledge, so … I guess I stand corrected.
So are you saying that his actions were not detrimental to the Packers organization?
Personally, I could care less about the way the city of Green Bay looks at him. He was there hero for 15 years. Ted Thompson had been around for 3 years. Favre was the QB, Thompson was the GM. I can’t think of many fans that side with a front office over their favorite player. It doesn’t mean that Thompson wasn’t acting in the best interest of the football team and Favre somehow was.
"That Brees is a good quarterback." - Giants Free Safety Michael Johnson after a 48-27 Saints victory.
Favre and Thompson did not see eye to eye
Their disagreement about what direction the organization should have taken was detrimental to the organization, without a doubt.
Beyond that you can parse however you can personally prefer. Some see that Favre should have shut up and deferred to management, others see that Thompson has not been willing to make the extra steps to put the packers “over the top” (what Favre wanted, to “win now”), and squandered Green Bay’s last best chance to go to a Superbowl, in 2007.
Which you agree with probably says a lot more about how you look at things, than what was absolutely right or wrong, I don’t believe there was an absolute right or wrong in that.
But enough about the Packer stuff. I talk about it because I know a lot, but I’d rather go back to making this week about the Vikings and Siants. So I hope you forgive me if I leave this where it is.
That's an inside joke, by the way
Most people don’t realize that The Green Bay Packers, Inc, hired Ari Fleischer Media Consultants almost immediately after Favre first hinted he wanted to come back to the team, meaning 1-2 months before it became public (well, the Packers publicly claim they did not retain him until the end of July, they are directly contradicted by Fleischer’s own financial statements). It’s not clear how much the Packers paid Fleischer for his help, but it is easily $100,000.
If you really want to know all the ugly details, they are repeated here, written by a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Packer beat writer with inside sources at Lambeau. It’s sad but true that very few Packer fans know about this (the article was originally posted on a subscription service, the above is an unauthorized reproduction). I wonder how they would have reacted in the same situation, after the Packers went to defcon 3 and hired Bush’s spin doctor to plan manipulating public opinion against you (that is the only thing Fleischers’ company does, provide advise on how to use PR to manipulate public opinion to your advantage), the second you say in private to them “hey, maybe I want to come back.”
Who was first disloyal to who?
After reading that article it doesn't change anything one iota
If I were in the Packers position I would want to hire a PR guy too. It doesn’t make one thing said by the Packers or Fleischer’s firm untrue. If the most popular player in the history of the franchise was taking actions that would hurt the team I sure hope somebody working for the Packers would have the common sense to hire a PR guy to better convey that fact to the ticket-buying fans.
Every single one of your posts has only shown how popular Favre was in Green Bay at the time. It doesn’t go one way or the other into who was wrong in the situation. His popularity only shows that it is right and reasonable to take the precaution of hiring a PR guy when a popular individual starts doing something that hurts your team.
And as for Favre being such a great teammate as Ryan Pickett says in your article, the Jets seem to think different.
And for someone who would “rather go back to making this week about the Vikings and Siants” and wants to “leave this where it is” you seem to be coming back to this topic an awful lot.
"That Brees is a good quarterback." - Giants Free Safety Michael Johnson after a 48-27 Saints victory.
whatever
It’s clear that the the Packers hired Feischer two months before Favre began “taking actions that would hurt the team” (your definition of “asking if he could keep playing”) has made no impression on you. You seem like the kind of person who already knows everything, even when you do not.
You can get the last word in if you’d like now … sigh
Can we agree on this?
Let’s all agree that we’ll only discuss Favre on a personal basis on this post. All the other posts can be reserved to discuss that game…..what’s it called?? Oh yeah, Football.
Favre is a controversial figure. Like George W. Bush. Like Barrack Obama. Like Rush Limbaugh. Like Skip Bayliss (bad example, everybody hates Skip). Like all controversial figures, people have strong opinions one way or the other. No body is going to change anyone’s mind. A large part of my negative opinion is influenced by the fact that I’m TIRED of being force fed a steady diet of Brett Farve. On tv, on the radio, on the internet, in the newspapers, and now even on CSC. Enough already.

The Vikings get this kind of post every game they play. And until last week we got crap about Reggie Bush.
Brett tries to win every game he plays, I can respect that. Not like Moss that gives up on routes and sulks on the sidelines. Or like Owens who was almost crying after the Saints defense shut him out. Which I would like to remind our visiting Vikings fans was when we had our defense healthy. Which they are now.
I respect your opinion, but I judge NFL players by what they do on the field.
So, let's get this straight. You dislike Favre because, even if he isn't in the game you're watching, he can still give you crabs?

What’s funny is, trash galore is flying concerning Favre, from he’s selfish, stuck up, a pain in the Wranglers, self-centered, mean, hateful, ugly, you name it, I’m sure it’s been said. What no one is saying, is the same things about Drew Brees. To me, as qb’s go, Favre is great and Brees is great. As PEOPLE go, I don’t think Favre is in the same league as Drew. It shows me that it doesn’t matter what kind of PERSON you are…when you step on the field, you’re either a good, winning qb, or you’re not. Both of the qb’s are good…good enough to get their respective teams to this game…but it’s obvious the same can’t be said for their character. Unfortunately, the game won’t be decided on personality.
Well, I think this post has replaced the media for pr for Favre.
You do realize that ‘stars’ like publicity: good, bad, or indifferent.
Good Job!!!

What a nice story about going crabbing and getting drunk. I’d love to take a trip down to Louisiana and go crabbing.
I love crab and well, soul food in general. Then there’s that Mardi Gras thing or whatever :)
We are the vikings.......resistance is futile.
Oh, no, not crabbing. You can do that LOTs of places. You wanna go giggin'.
Frogs or Vikes, either will do ;-)
