Advice From An Arizona Cardinals Fan

First off, congratulations on making the Super Bowl. It's amazing that two teams that have struggled so much in their history have managed to appear in back to back Super Bowls(maybe you guys can win it). The reason for my post today is to pass on some advice. As you know, we were in this same boat this time last year and went through the ups and downs of the experience, and here are my thoughts:

  1. Soak it all up now - Basically just enjoy every moment of it. You have a little over a week now and let me tell you, it flys by. Buy as much merchandise as you can. Shirts, hats, bumper stickers, whatever. I wish I would've bought more stuff to remember and display on my Cardinals wall of fame.
  2. Get out of denial - I know it seems surreal right now - It didn't hit me that the Cardinals were actually in the Super Bowl until after they lost. It was just this unreal feeling that they were actually there and I guess my mind couldn't wrap itself around it. Saints fans, YOU ARE IN THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!. Consider that your virtual shake and slap in the face to wake you up if you weren't already.
  3. Go for the kill - I've glanced around your site and have noticed some of you accepting the fact that you just made it to the Super Bowl and you're okay with that. Trust me when I say, I am still ecstatic that the Cardinals made it, BUT, I really wanted that trophy. I remember telling myself last year that I didn't care if they lost, that I was just so damn happy the Cardinals were actually in the big game. Our NFC championship win was our Super Bowl, and as great as it was, it couldn't have stood up to hoisting that Lombardi trophy. I wanted nothing more then to see us in NFL Network's, "America's Game". Instead I was stuck re-watching Ben Roethlisberger throw the game-winning TD pass to Santonio Holmes...over and over and over and over and...you get the point. Everyone I knew, even friends and family that weren't really Cardinal fans but lived in AZ were depressed..yes depressed. Therefore, aim for the ultimate goal and don't be happy with anything less.
  4. Prepare for anything - Now this isn't saying be ready to lose, but prepare your mind for anything. As indescribable as it is for your team to be IN the Super Bowl, it's the same feeling to describe the loss - gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, tooth-pulling, grabbing the noose and wrapping it around your neck only for a family member to...oh wait, too much information. I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from here. I know right now you feel like it's impossible to be knocked from your high-horse, but IT IS POSSIBLE. Just get the alcohol ready before the game, and you'll be ok if things go bad.

So that is my little spew of advice from a  team that was just in the Super Bowl last year. Yes there are probably other Cardinal fans that may disagree, but I think we can all agree that winning the big game was more important then the entire season all together. I realize the Saints are relatively young but there's a reason why people say getting to, and winning the Super Bowl are damn near impossible. So as I get ready for the Super Bowl that is a little over a week away, I'll be rooting for my fellow NFC - former doormat team - to win Super Bowl 44. Go Saints!!!

Awesome post, rec'd it!

Thanks Andrew! Your advice is truly wisdom. The whole experience is still surreal for me, as I’m sure it is for many other Saints fans. I will indeed soak up every drop of this next week as you advise. I’ve also been putting off buying some Saints championship gear, so you’ve convinced me I should wait no longer.

I was rooting hard for the Cards last year because I always like the underdogs and our two teams have been the perennial underdogs for decades now. I hated to see the Steelers win.

Want to come to a Mardi Gras party?

Thanks for the wishes Andrew.
I’m in SW PHX, and I’m making chicken and andouille gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish etoufee, plus I have Pat O’Brien Hurricane mix for the drinks. I am having a king cake shipped for the game.
Let me know if you want to come – I was rooting for the Cards last yr!
Regarding #1 and 2: Very few here are in denial or not absorbing it all up.
#3: I was an Astros fan; I watched their only World Series appearance while cleaning up the flood water from my house. I was just glad to be there. Now, I realize that may have been their only chance in my lifetime. I am with ya 100% – this HAS to be the year!

Thanks for the invite, I'll definitely think about it.

I still got some time to make sure no family is doing anything.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Seconded by a Bronco fan

I still remember the Broncos making it after the 77 season – what a thrill! But the loss was hard. Then three more losses with Elway. Those are not easy to take. But finally a couple wins – the difference is total.
I have a young friend who is a big Saints fan who said the other day “I don’t care if we win or not, I’m just happy to be going to the SB.” I wanted to tell him he’ll feel differently a week from now, but didn’t – I’ll give him a few days. So yes, enjoy the next nine days to the max, but please beat the Colts! I really want the Saints to win – have always liked the Saints.
Question: who is Archie Manning going to be rooting for? (I bet it’s the Saints)

That would be a tough decision for Manning

I’d imagine since Peyton just wont he Super Bowl that he’d be rooting for the Saints – secretly of course.

Good advice, thanks

But the Saints aren’t young. In fact they’re one of the older teams in the league. That may be a bit misleading b/c we have dinosaur Brunnel and until just recently, Carney…but point is that this may be a one-time opportunity for the Saints. I think the front office realizes that which is why they brought in Sharper (clearly not a longterm acquisition) and were so willing to make a play in the draft for Beanie Wells as the expense of future picks.

This team may be on of destiny this year, but we are far from a dynasty for years to come.

I guess I mean they're fairly young at key positions

With us, we have/had Warner at the end of his career which sucks.

You might say that the Saints are on the trail blazed by the Cardinals last year

So when the Saints win, considering it…well, kinda like taking care of the unfinished business from last year.

Man I really wanted the Cards to win last year. I can’t stand the Stoolers. Anybody but them. Even gulp the Falcons. Barely. By a millimeter or so.

I pulled for both the Cardinals and the Seahawks against the Steelers, that despite having lived in Pittsburgh when I was younger and growing up a Steelers fan. I still like the Steelers and usually pull for them. I just don’t feel as strong a connection to them as I used to. On top of which, neither Arizona nor Seattle had won a Super Bowl. I think every team’s fan base should get to experience that at least once. Had Pittsburgh been playing the Giants or anyone else from the NFC who had won one before, I would have probably still been in their corner.

Good post and got a rec!

Since the Vikes game I’ve noticed a slight change in the mood here on CSC. Kind of a “We did it!” sway to the conversations. I like to think “We’re doing it!” and it ain’t over till the fat cheerleader sings!

GOOD ADVICE

Great post Andrew.

I won’t add too much to it but the part that really stood out for me was the “watching Rothlisberger throw the game winning TD to Sanonio Holmes over and over” part. Mainly because that’s what I seem to get fed alot. I get to see Dwight Clark grabbing a pass Montana was trying to throw out of the endzone. Over and over and over.
I was pulling hard for the Cards last year. Was a great game and I still have doubts about that last foot in the endzone but it’s all history now. So now I’m throwing my lot in with the Saints hoping for better. Andrew is absolutely right guys, don’t settle for just “making it”. Invoke the gods with all your might for the win. These things are precious and far between and must be taken full advantage of when they present themselves.

Your still depressed

One has to think, do I want my team to win the Superbowl so I can be proud or is it that maybe just maybe the commentators will say all the things a guy wants to here.

great post

Thanks dude, classy post. Being a founding member of the dallas cowboy hater orginaztion, I have pulled for the Cards many, many times. And have been a Kurt Warner fan from the day he stepped on the field for the Rams. Glad he finished his career with a classy organization like the Cards.

Seriously ought to think about going to Baggs5’s house for the Super Bowl, cajuns put on a good feed.

The Fierce Urgency of Now

Hard to miss the contrast between Warner and Farver, not to jump on the southern boy when his pants are on the ground. Have to admit, I’m glad to be here, but still hope for more. Throw it deep and let the chips fall where they may. God knows we’re due.

Andrew.....

Hey, gotta like the Cards…….I’m pretty sure most Saints fans were pulling for you guys last year. But here is the thing. I always imagined that if the Saints ever made the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl, I would just be so damn happy that I would enjoy the hell out of those games no matter the outcome. But I didn’t enjoy the NFC Championship game at all. Not even a little. I was stressed beyond belief for over three hours. It was really bad. Sure, the celebration afterwards was great and this past week has been like a dream, but that game was a really miserable experience. I think that is the difference between older Saints fans (like me) and younger fans. I lived through Big Ben and that Monday Night collapse against the Raiders. I just can’t accept yet that this team is different, that this team CAN achieve different results. I mean, they already have. But i am planning on actually enjoying the Super Bowl and not getting so stressed out even though I don’t know how to do that. Maybe they will win and this dream will last a lifetime and not just until next season.

I'd say if you were stressed watching the NFC championship game(which I was too for us)

Then you’ll be overwhelmed for the Super Bowl.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.
