Canal Street Chronicles: The Second Season

The playoffs are just a day away. Or as my nephew and niece say, one more wakeup. Lucky for all of us that the Saints get to take part in this second season and have a chance to erase their recent mistakes and remind the country why this team is so scary.

Coincidentally, it falls at the same time that I feel our little corner of the world here at Da Chronic has reached an evolution point. The success of the Saints has also meant success for Canal Street Chronicles. We now have over 2,000 members, had our highest traffic month in December with 120,000 visits and are on schedule to break the 1,000,000 total hit barrier sometime in the next couple of weeks. I'm such a proud daddy. Given the obvious changes taking place in our community, I think it's about time that we here at Canal Street Chronicles take our home to the next level. What do you think? Great, glad you agree. At the very end of this post, I've got a surprise that I think many of you will enjoy.

Star-divide

First, let me tell you about a few improvements I've made around here. Believe it or not I've been thinking about all of these changes for quite some time. All of them have already been implemented.

  • There is now a 24-hour waiting period to comment after signing up for an account. I know there are some of you out therestujo4who wanted this to be 48-hours but let's take this whole waiting period out for a spin first and see how she purrs.
  • Our community guidelines will be included in the membership agreement when a new account is created. It is expected to be read and understood by everyone. Fortunately, new members will have that nice 24-hour period in which to do so.
  • Everyone has really embraced the rec system which is wonderful. So much so that I feel we need to break away from the original format I had set up to help promote it's use and take it to a new level that better separates the good from the bad while hopefully encouraging members to write higher quality content. I've been studying the FanPost and FanShot section for quite a while with this in mind for the future, trying to get a feel for where I think the new lines should be drawn. I've reached my decision. It now takes seven recs to elevate a FanPost and four for a FanShot. And instead of two recs to turn a comment that cool green color, it now takes three.
  • I've come to the realization that there is just way too much wonderful material on this site to read. I get to a lot of it, but I just can't read it all. So I have enlisted the help of some of our members to join the moderating team. They will be out there all the time reading everything written and taking all the necessary steps to make sure this place stays classy. Their identities are being concealed not only from you guys, but from each other. There may be three of them, there may be twelve; It's my little secret. But they are watching, like moderator ninjas. Any problems that need to be handled privately will always be done by me.

I also wanted to share with you our new and improved community guidelines. Some of them are still the same, some have been tweaked and some are new altogether. All of it has been reworded. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Rules and Community Guidelines

  • No profanity. Hell and damn are acceptable on an occasional basis. Nothing else. If you really feel you need to use a bad word, the only acceptable way to do so is using the first letter and truncating the rest of the word, i.e. "s---." The rules of tastefulness also apply to your avatars and signatures.
  • Never attack another member on a  personal level. That doesn't have to do with anything. You don't have to agree with everything that everyone says but you have to disagree with them in a respectful way. That's the fun in this whole thing.
  • We don't need "interracial love" spam. Spamming and trolling is strictly forbidden. Nobody here is interested in what you're selling. Don't create multiple accounts for the purpose of avoidance. If you've got your own Saints website and you want feedback or to share, that is totally cool. Share it with us in a FanShot or FanPost. That is why they are there.
  • Stay away from hot-button topics like race, religion and politics unless it is inherently related to the Saints.
  • When quoting a source in a FanPost or FanShot, do not copy and paste the entire article. Just pick one or two parts you find signficant and quote those. Than link to the article. Whenever referencing a source, always provide the link. When posting a FanShot, do a quick check first to make sure that same link hasn't already been posted. In the case of duplicates, the earliest time stamped FanShot will be kept. The rest will be deleted.
  • You are not allowed to plagiarize anyone else's work for any reason whatsoever.
  • If you find yourself trying to fill space with pointless babble and "WHO DAT!? WHO DAT!?  WHO DAT!?  WHO DAT!?  WHO DAT!?  WHO DAT!?" at the end of your FanPost just to meet the 75 word minimum, it probably isn't meant to be a FanPost. If an article, video or picture is what you really want to share, try using a FanShot. You can still incorporate your own thoughts that way.
  • Any comments that break these rules will be deleted as well as all subsequent comments made in reply. That means you are responsible for other peoples comments too, so don't ruin it for everyone else. We do not have the ability to edit comments so don't write some long, well-written comment and then ruin by saying something stupid, because it will all be lost.
  • All of these rules should be followed on other blogs you visit. Interacting with other communities is strongly encouraged but you still represent us here at Canal Street Chronicles as well as Saints fans the world over. Don't give us a bad name.
  • Knowing is half the battle. You are expected to know all of these rules. You will be warned for first offenses and could be banned for repeated offenses.
  • Myself and the Moderators will be enforcing all of these rules at all times.
  • For help and how to use the awesome features given to us here, it can be found right here in the posts contained in our Tour of CSC section. You are strongly encouraged to read them.

Welcome to your new Canal Street Chronicles. I'm excited and I hope you are, too.

After all of that seriousness, I think it's time to lighten the mood a bit. We know the Saints have put together some pretty impressive stats this season but what about community? This is where your surprise comes into play. The good people over at SB Nation hooked me up with some cool stats from our community that I think a lot of you are going to get a kick out of and ought to raise a lot of discussion. Perhaps even a bit of competition.

Below are the key stats from our blog for the last two years. When analyzing the numbers, though, keep in mind that we started the 2008 year in the month of April.

Thanks to everyone for everything. I've said it before and I will say it again: without you guys, I'm just talking to myself.

Congrats on the site

I’ve enjoyed my time here since I started posting this season. Much like Pensburgh(the SB Nation Pittsburgh Penguins blog site), this site has been a nice little haven to chat with people as obsessed with the Saints as I am(or more?). It’s been a great ride this season and this site has made it that much sweeter. So, thanks to all those involved in running, maintaining and moderating this place.

A surprise, new feature? Hmm…A weekly Joe Horn column where Joe Horn sits down with Joe Horn to discuss all things Joe Horn? Please, please, please…

People with high-blood pressure should consult their doctor and ask if they're healthy enough for Saints activity before rooting for this team.

For the weekly Joe Horn sit down . . .

Why don’t we just have him call in to interview by cell phone?

I’m guessing deleted FanPosts don’t count towards your total. Otherwise, I would have had at least 16 with the Player Pick ’em contest alone.

Well if you had been able to get people to “un-rec” the post instead of deleting them… :)

by FriarBob on Jan 8, 2010 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

It would have to be the same individuals that rec’d it, correct? In which case, you would have no idea who they are. There should be some sort of sticky note override designation for stuff like that, where recs wouldn’t be necessary. Then, I could just unpin it and let it drop off the main page.

Yeah the same person has to un-rec it, but it’s not like they couldn’t do it. They were recing the new post and you could have reminded them to go to the old and undo it.

Yeah, the pin/unpin idea would be nicer. But then SS would have to handle it or make you an admin. And we know how much screaming option two would cause. :)

24-hour waiting period to comment

I’m sure you have a reason for that, when the Saints played the Cowboys I became member of Blogging the Boys and they have that rule also, I wasn’t cool with that, to shorten the story I never posted a comment and I deleted them from my blogs and I am no longer a member and will never return to their site. I guess what I’m trying to say is not everyone has a ton of time to spend on the computer and may want to do some trash talking before the game, all in fun of course and for that reason I think the 24-hour waiting period is bad because people who don’t have a lot of time to play before the game just want to drop in to have fun. Just my take on it.
Anyway you have a very cool site with a variety of characters to shoot the bull with, When I have time I have some fun here
Thanks for having me

Speaking of characters

Deckape – you never cease to amuse or amaze. At this stage, I’m not sure if there aren’t two different people that post under Deckape 69, or if you really do have a split personality, or if you just throw stuff** out there and sit back to watch the sparks fly. In any event, don’t let the “other” Deckape stay away too long…… but please limit his comments to his fan base at CSC. Other blogs might not appreciate him the way some here do..

I think

There is a fine line between “trash talking” and supporting your team. I would never tell someone who cheers for a different team that “they suck” or some other derogatory mark. I would agree with Mtn that if you come off that way, you do come across as a bit of a douche. I have been to enough sporting events where i am wearing rival team jerseys, and if you cant be gracious in a win or a defeat, then maybe you should just stay at home or take it to a local sports lounge.

Well, I think that quote was mine and it wont happen again since it's law

but , it’s kinda like telling Brees to stop his chants before the game cause it might make the other team upset or spiking the football after a TD because it’s unsportsman like. The NFL “No Fun League” has spilled over to CSC “Cant Scold Competetors” and takes away that competitive spirit that is in each and every one of us. I will abide by the laws you request unless after your reading my comments, deem me unappropriate to continue to as a member of CSC. Just let me know………………..

My comment on the" Panther encouragement Post"

“Come on guys, Thats why S B Nation has a link to all teams. Nothing wrong with a little ribbing on the opposing teams”

Yes, I am tough enuff to take it and I can also dish it out while being very un- agressive with my comments. I like a “toungue in cheek” comment just to get a rise as though I was sitting next to a competetors fan at the game or Sports bar.
I wecome anyone to click on my dash board and read any of my comments or post as being Trash Talk but while looking, I ask that you also read some of the responces that I do consider trash talk as a reply. I also realize that if I visit another teams blog and make a comment they determine as trash talking, they consider you a Troll which incites derrogatory remarks in return. This does not bother me………..and I got a rise out of them.

I just felt that my comment was being used as a basis for the new rules about visiting other teams blogs and creating havoc. Trolling they call it. If they want us not to do it, as it is"Rude and Juvenile", they should eliminate a way to do it from this site. I donot represent CSC when I go there. I represent myself and my Saints and if we were of no No consequence, they should not be so scared of us. I have been told so many times to “Fear the Star” it makes me sick. In turn I tell them I want them to win so we get another shot to kick their axx and they get all wired up. Tuff, I say.

Dave, what if a saints fan

were to join in on Cowteats bashing on, say, the EAGLES site? I’m sure the Eagles would welcome Saints fans who share a mutual dislike of such a pompous over-hyped team. I’m not talking about adamlarson3 type trolling. I’m talking about insightful, refined, anti-cowboy comments on a thread that is already anti-cowboy.

There is certainly a difference between good natured smack .....

and offensive trolling but sometimes there’s a pretty fine line that separate the two. This is compounded by the fact that what was intended as a witty comment might be interpreted as offensive by someone else. Often, that invites a retort that causes the whole thing to escalate into a juvenile urination contest. I’ve found the best way to self sensor is to not write anyting on another blog that I wouldn’t say if I were amongst a large group of that blog’s fans face to face.

I would never dream of going on another blog and trash talking their team. There are teams I dislike and have no problem saying so here or in conversation, but to make it a point to go to their blog and talk trash…well, rude and juvenille sounds about right to me.

rude and juvenile

Why don’t we just all be nice and post stuff like the following

Well the Saints lost to the Cowboys but they are still the best team in the NFL the Cowboys really didn’t beat the Saints; the Saints let the Cowboys win but the Saints are still the better team because they lost their last 3 games and the Cowboys didn’t

The above statement is the denial most on here live by; so you say its not fun to engage in conversation with fans from another team on another site and tell them that there team S**KS and our team is going to kick some butt.
So the proper way to approach this would be " The Cowboys in my opinion is not very good and then explain why and then proceed to explain why in your opinion the Saints are the better team and will win"
You do that, I’ll just tell the truth and tell them there team S**KS and our team will kick there BUTTS, they like and do the same, why because I can

dave is there a way to have the game day threads auto update for iphone viewing? i’m usually on the road or not at home when the game is on, but i was hoping i could follow the game day thread on my iphone, but i have to refresh the whole page and scroll like 700 times to get to the bottom…. what do you think?

by nanvinnie on Jan 8, 2010 9:01 AM CST reply actions

It's possible

you can toggle the “push notification” setting for the mobile site, and that would help(if you have the link to CSC set as an “app”). I don’t think that’ll help, but it’s possible. Probably won’t work until there’s a genuine “app” for SBNation sites(which they should do!!!). I have similar troubles with my iPhone, which has led to me not trying to post anymore on gameday threads. Haven’t tried findinf the “push notification” switch for a safari link, but I’ve thought about it as a simple fix.

There's a built -in spell check, and corrector.

If the word isn’t recognized by the processor, it’s underlined red(like word or openoffice, etc.). If you highlight the word and right-click it, the processor will give you it’s best guesses at what word you’re trying to spell. FYI.

I'm currently going through fantasy football withdrawals

I would also spend a lot of this “work” time researching different players and teams each week to improve my fantasy rosters. It paid off because I won 5 of the 6 fantasy leagues I played in, but now I don’t know what to do with myself. I guess I should resort to doing the most obvious—actual work.

You’re right. Last year I got a taste and this year became obsessed. I’ve got to limit myself to just two leagues next year. Six leagues is way too time consuming.

Many thanks to Saintsational Dave and all the work hours he puts into this blog. Is it any better now than it was in April 2008? Yes, quite a bit better. I remember when I’d come back to the site an hour later and there would be no new comments so I’d have to comment again, trying to get something going. Now I have Do Not Read member lists and it’s still hard to keep up. So everybody, give yourselves a big hand! (Not that way. Perverts. Lovely

I made the fan posts list. And my attendance has been constant but my posts have been minimal. Sorry boys and girls. Busy bee these days. My son is a whirlwind (the next coming of Reggie) and almost made me blow my knee out twice with his cutting.

And then we are expecting another one in the summer of this year.

So between the new job, the speed demon that is my son, and time spent practicing and succeeding in doing my part to create the upcoming “chillun” i have had no time to do anything. My apologies.

I have though been following the Saints with a rabid frenzy this season. I honestly think that regardless of the stumbles at the end of the season, this team is going to come out with a vengeance in the playoffs. I will try to contribute as much as i can on this site as my life settles down.

A "do not read members list" is...

noun- a compilation of names that will be avoided while reading the comments section of any front-page stories, fanposts, and fanshots. This tactic is effective in increasing one’s enjoyment level while on da chronic. While actually difficult to master, the ability to simply skip past a known undesirable member saves everybody, including yourself, from going through a relentless back and forth that ultimately leads to nothing and possible IBS.

True Saints fans are classy

True Saints fans are classy because they don’t need a team to prove their worth in life. I get so tired of these bandwagon fans who “claim” a team and then talk much smack after they have won it all. When you ask them “Why do you root for the N## E###### P######## or the D##### C###### (don’t want to violate the no cursing rule!)” They cannot provide a reason other than they won the Superbowl the previous year."

I was born in LA and left young. When I became an adult and could choose my own team (instead of rooting for dad’s team) I chose the Saints, 20+ years ago. I caught holy heck anytime I mentioned I was a Saints fan. I had to endure coming into work and seeing my co-workers with bags on their heads. Co-workers asking have the Saints been eliminated yet? (I always had to figure out when they were mathmatically eliminated from post-season) Call me an eternal optimist, but no matter how this year turns out, I am happy. I know it will be hard being the defending champs, but I am ready for it.

Nothing wrong with rooting for Dad's team...

If it’s done on your terms and for your own reasons. I was born and raised in the New Orleans area, and moved away in 2000. I still make it back home once or twice a year, and have always and will continue to pull for the Saints. My dad still follows them, but not with as much fervor since he kind of gave up hope years ago.

There are other teams that I like to follow (such as the Steelers,) but none hold a candle to the New Orleans black and gold! You are right—the vast majority of Saints fans are classy, and we have to be sure to show the fans of the other teams how to behave once the Saints join that number (Super Bowl champs!)

although one year (1991) driving back to Centre College in Danville, KY, after Thanksgiving I did pick up the Saints game vs. the Rams or 49ers…Steve Walsh, Baby was having a rough go of it, and we totally choked up a game we should have won – I remember the ball slipped out of his hand as he tried to spike the ball to kill the clock late in the game and they ruled it a fumble, giving the ball to the bad guys and effectively ending any chance we had to win the game. and then the next year, they added the rule about QB’s and spiking that would have made that play NOT be ruled a fumble anymore…too little, too late!

Unless I was stuck in my dads car. Back then, it was nothing but news and Perry Como. In those days, I listened to WTIX and WNOE – Great top 40 stations. I remember a long time ago when WTIX was the primary pop station (before WEZB and FM radio in general took over), they used to play “Fire” by the Pointer Sisters (which was a Springsteen cover) and they inserted their call letters into the song. “I’m driving in my caaaaar …. turn on the radioooo … (WTIX)”. Super ghey. No idea why that popped into my head. I’ll shut up now.

Getting in a car wreck with a woman who’s not your wife doesn’t make you a bad person! It’s happened to me more times than car wrecks with women that were my wife. That aside, Freeman is one of the great actors of our time.

We’ll have to have some testimony from your wife on this.

Too bad the woman wasn’t Jessica Tandy. That movie could have used an hour or so edited off the back end.

This is what Bob told Jeremy Shockey......

regarding what it will be like for him and the Saints on Feb. 7 in Miami.

“The tide will come up
When the winds will stop
and the breeze will cease to be breathin’.
Like the stillness in the wind
’Fore the hurricane begins,
The hour when our ship comes in.

We shall rise
With the sleep still in our eyes
And we’ll jerk from our beds and think we’re dreamin’.
But we’ll pinch ourselves and squeal
And know that it’s for real,
The hour when our ship comes in.

Our foes will raise their hands,
Sayin’ you must meet all our demands,
But we’ll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh’s tribe,
They’ll be drowned in the tide,
And like Goliath, they’ll be conquered."

no concern for post superbowl win letdown and depression?

I’m willing to brave it. But I know it’s coming. Then what’s left? Repeat? Threepeat? Wouldn’t that be nice?

3.) Not usually a spammer, but you guys really need to check out this product! Is your cat making too much noise!? Is your cat constantly stomping around, driving you CRAZY!? Check this out:

Love the site...

Used to browse the Yahoo Saints message boards every now and then, but I started losing brain cells. It’s good have some intelligent footballers to talk to.

I'm not sure about the new rules.

24 hour waiting period is not my favorite, but I can live with that.

This site is awesome. I’ve been playing on here since before it became part of sb nation. I guess that’s since the beginning. And we’re finally getting to the point of having a solid group of posters. It’s far better than Tigerdroppings, for example. The fanposts are amazing! It used to be that Saintsational had all the best posts by so far it wasn’t even worth making comparisons. But now I’m frequently surprised to see people crunching numbers and really coming up with new stuff! It’s great! And for the most part discussion is civil, pleasant, and members are welcoming of the opposing fans. I think all of this is important.

But I am not too keen about the new rules. They seem hastily written, wordy, and are overkill. On the other hand, I liked the Falcoholic’s rules. It was a one liner like “be nice to people and stuff. We’re homers so deal with it.” Straight forward.

I also think it’s really not a good idea for CSC to describe the spam content in its rules. I know it’s tongue in cheek but it’s not exactly in good taste either.

If you really want to put some user agreements on CSC, I suggest you consider a legal disclaimer rather than posting rules. Legal disclaimers don’t really offer you a lot of protection but they make people feel like they do.

Keep up the good work!

it's kind of funny seeing people comment on the 24-hour waiting pd.

we’re all already members, so it won’t impact our ability to post at all…

yeah, but we experience the wait when looking at other sb nation sites

I wanted to discuss on the dallas site this season and didn’t sign up early. It ended up being a waste and I never posted to their site.

by xen-cuts on Jan 9, 2010 12:24 AM CST up reply actions

I hear what you're saying xen

it’s a rule that might block out some quality people and turn them off initially. But the thinking is that if they really are quality, and they really want to contribute here, they will wait. Stupid trolls will not.

Theoretically it makes sense.

Realistically? Some of the trolls might get filtered but probably not too many. And most of the spammers are probably automated scripts. They’ll just keep trying to post automatically every day or two until they get something through. And keep it up until they get banned.

by FriarBob on Jan 9, 2010 3:07 AM CST up reply actions

It's definitely a good idea to take the pressure off the moderators.

I’m sure the trolls keep you busy. I also am really impressed at the lack of spam (or trolls, for that matter) on our message boards.

This is really the website of Saintsational. That everyone who posts feels it’s a community site or “their site” is testament to how well the site is run and moderated.

I do pre-game discussion about tactics, not trash talk, and

I do not enjoy post game bs. Post game I usually try to make the opposing fans feel a little better about things. What is the point of talking trash after you’ve won?

But I actually do congratulate other fans. It’s pretty endearing and makes them like the Saints, New Orleans, and Louisiana a lot more. I feel like we’re ambassadors for this state. I mean, you get one or two people to start thinking of how nice it is here, they tell their friends, and sooner or later decide to come visit, etc. I think that stuff is important beyond just the football games. It can really make a difference in people’s lives. Before Katrina I thought New Orleans should be a destination of choice for pretty much anyone looking to have the fun Vegas-type holiday. Now I think it’s even better for that but getting people back here hasn’t happened as quickly as I’d expected. Every little bit helps. So even though I thoroughly dislike some of the other teams, I still respect them and can congratulate them on victories, even when those victories come at our expense or due to crap calls from the refs which happen more often than not.

I found this site by accident and..........

want to thank everyone for hours upon hours of entertainment, information and good old fashion Bull shi’ng, well, we all know what bulls do. My wife does not get as upset at all the time that I spend on this site as she has over, well lets just say that this site is wife and tailgate approved. Being somewhat isolated up here in what some refer to as Shreveport, Texas it’s good to converse with people who have a subject of common interest. The fan base is growing up here, however we will have to see if they are still fans next year before we can validate any claim regarding the conversion of some of the large number of Cowgirl faithfull that occupy these parts. Oh, Was that O.K. New rules violation?? Anywho, Thanks Guys.

but I don’t know if they match up too well with Dallas, especially in Dallas. I’m expecting it to be the winner of Green Bay/Arizona, but we’ll see. We’ll take whoever we get, and take care of business in our dome!

I do appreciate everyone, and try to read all the posts and stories. I decided to join this group after checking out many of the others, and I’m glad I did! Just wish I had more time to devote to taking part—maybe that can be my resolution for 2010!
