got to be drew

we all saw where this team would be without him week 17. still so unbelievable we have this guy on our roster. looking forward to many more MVPs for this guy.

speaking of, when does the league release the MVP award, thought it was before the playoffs. not that it is as important as this MVP award :0

Bell's GPA

was surprised how low it dropped. He had a really high GPA half way through the season, but I guess his recent string of crappy performances dropped him severely

by Andrew Juge on Jan 8, 2010 1:20 PM CST reply actions

yeah

he wasn’t what we were expecting to be in the 2nd half

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

give the guy a break

Considering how few snaps he had last year, are y’all really that surprised that he’s worn down a little over 16 games? I expect to see him back in form during the playoffs after al little rest.

the guy was out of football last season

he had a knee injury this season and his running style is punishing. I’m betting he’ll be back in early season form come 1/16/10.

He is what he is

a backup, or a rotational back. He can no more run through a crowded line than Reggie can. I like him and all, but I wouldn’t expect much more from him.

MIke Bell can't run through a crowded line?

Did you think that was #23 all year long? Must I link some video for you? (gets better 40 sec in)

And the people who gain the world and lose their soul, they don't know. They can't see. Are you one of them?

He did have a great game.

In week 1, against Detroit. In fairness, he also had great games against Miami and, to a lesser degree, Philly. But the polish has worn off. Like I said, I like him, but he’s not anything to anchor a running game to.

TE David Thomas did quite a lot to save the season at that position

After Dan Campbell and Billy Miller went down? If Darnell Dinkins is a solid 2.14, then Thomas HAS to be a 3.14. For this season. He’s no Shockey and maybe he’s no Mark Campbell, and maybe he’s no Billy Miller either, but I’m pretty sure he was better than Dan Campbell would have been and he’s a damn sight better than Dinkins has been.

I lost ten points just for being in the right place at exactly the wrong time.

by stujo4 on Jan 8, 2010 1:39 PM CST reply actions

Thomas' grade

started off very poorly. You’ll remember early in the season he dropped a number of passes and got holding calls, missed assignments. His GPA was so low early on it was almost impossible to salvage. 2.41 is actually a testament, believe it or not, to how well he’s performed of late. Through 3 or 4 games he was under 2.0. Once he came to understand the playbook and got in better rhythm with Brees he started to improve drastically. I agree with you. Unfortunately, his low GPA is a function of a brutal start to the season.

by Andrew Juge on Jan 8, 2010 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

I can live with that. Way to stick to the numbers and not the emotions like I do.

Too Harsh!

3.18 for Brees? Brees is a top 3 NFL QB (this season) and he has an “above average” GPA on the season? This is a guy who is going to get MVP votes…right? It would appear to me that Matt Ryan and Jason Campbell had “above average” seasons. Does anyone think that either of them is in same class as Brees?

by jray2000 on Jan 8, 2010 1:42 PM CST reply actions

he can only go so high

you get a 3.4 to 4.0 for a near perfect game. brees had a handful of off games this year, 2.4 to 2.8. that hurts your grade. i dont think its implies he is not a great qb, but you would have to have a near perfect season to get any higher than a 3.4.

by sernycrusher on Jan 8, 2010 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

bingo

the grades shouldn’t be taken as meaning he’s an avg player. Even Peyton has had bad games this year. I can promise you that had I applied this grading scale to all QB’s in the NFL, I don’t think more than maybe 3-4 QB’s would be over 3.0

by Andrew Juge on Jan 8, 2010 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

GPA's of QB's

Maybe i’m not understanding then, help me out. This scale is the standard 4.0 like in school, right? (A=4, B=3, C=2, etc.) If not what is it? Ive seen some other post state that a 3.4 – 4.0 is awarded for a “near perfect game.” Obviously, I’m missing something. In CA, a 3.4 is middle of the road “B” meaning "above average and that’s not how i’d characterize on of the best QB’s in the league by your standard or mine.

by jray2000 on Jan 8, 2010 5:36 PM CST up reply actions

In CA

3.4 means you get A’s and B’s and C is average…A B quarter back would be like a 2.9-3..1ish, that’s like a Donovan McNabb/Carlson Palmer type. No QB get’s a 4.0 this year. Brady prob got a 3.8 in 2007 and I’d say Brees last year probably did. But it’s just a scale not a big deal…

Don't worry I got your back cuz...

by TAYDIGGA on Jan 8, 2010 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

hey man

3.18 is a high GPA. Believe it or not, I was criticized more times than not for being too generous with Brees on individual game performances. A couple of C’s/C-’s brought down his GPA, and those grades were well deserved based on his performance in those games.

by Andrew Juge on Jan 8, 2010 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

Average games?

Which ones where those? Not that i’m insinuating he did not have any.

Saints MVP for sure.

Drew is the only single player where we would KNOW for certain what would happen if he wasn’t on the field during a playoff game. We could and have overcome the loss of any other single player. However, after watching Manning’s backup the last couple of weeks, it’s pretty obvious the same is true for the Colts.

the flaw in this grading system

is that the best you can hope to get for the season is a B+, even if you are the best player on the team or the best player in the NFL at your position. Pro Bowl players with B averages- it just doesn’t seem to jive for me.

Having said that I am thankful for all the effort that goes into it but I think there needs to be some type of a curve whereas the middle of the road player gets a C and there are a couple of A’s, a few more B’s etc- especially on a # 1 rated offense on a team that was #1 Seed in NFC.

I guess Brett Favre would have gotten a B- and Kurt Warner and Aaron Rogers C+ ?

i like the tough grading scale

might seem nerdy but in madden 10 players are just that, average, only the elite are 87+(ie manning, brees, fitzgerald). we forget how good these players are and how good the players are they go against. a b+ in the nfl is great considering brees got a 3.18. whats the difference if brees gets curvered to a 4.0 if everyone elses grade moves up as well. brees is still that much better than everyone else behind him. and for that matter everyone else is still that much better than everyone else behind them…so on, so forth

by sernycrusher on Jan 8, 2010 5:53 PM CST up reply actions

i wouldn't look at 3.18 as "bad" or "not good enough"

When you’re on a 13-3 team and 3.18 is the highest gpa, clearly that’s a stellar average and about as good as you can get while still having a bad game here and there. If I took the time to grade every single player in the NFL for 16 games, I can’t imagine that more than 2-3 players would have a higher GPA. Maybe none. I haven’t watched Peyton enough to know how he’d grade out, but I’ve seen him have multiple INT’s in games. Also, Chris Johnson got off to a slow start this season, so no telling what his GPA would be either. Perhaps the system is harsh, but it should be taken away that Brees still graded out better than anyone else.

by Andrew Juge on Jan 8, 2010 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

correct on Favre/Warner/Rodgers

at 3.18, Brees’ OVERALL grade through 15 games is between B and B+. Keep in mind that’s the average. So you’re getting that kind of average every game from him. To average an A based on this grading system, he’d need to basically get more A’s than anything else, and almost no C’s. It’s just not realistic. Any player above a 3.0 has had a fantastic season. That doesn’t mean Brees hasn’t had A’s this year… in fact twice I gave him A+. He’s just had some bad games where he got a C and a C-. Brings down the overall grade. At the time the grade I have him for that game was fair. I’m sure some of Brett’s games the last few weeks would destroy his GPA. So here’s what I’d guess GPA’s would look like: Manning, 3.25, Favre, 2.97, Warner 2.80, Rodgers 2.78. That’s just a wild guess, but you get the idea.

4.0 is no longer the glass ceiling

My daughter, when she was in high school, had a GPA of 4.2 (not bragging, just saying). By taking college courses improved her average. Today’s highest is now 5.0. So if a player gets an A+ they should be credited for a college-like credit of above 4.0, thus enabling a higher average. If indeed, A=4 B=3 C=2, then no one will ever average higher than a “low A” or “high B”.

For instance...

Drew’s perfect passer rating vs. New England would garner him a 4.4 or 4.5 or even higher, depending upon your generosity at that moment. I concede that those games are rare. But to be limited to a strict 4.0 value and 3.5 being the lowest value considered A might not reflect a favorable GPA. Or maybe I’m just too empathetic.
