Rotoworld.com:
Randall Gay-DB- Saints Oct. 20 – 2:59 pm et Saints placed CB Randall Gay on injured reserve due to recurring concussion symptoms, ending his season. Practice squadder Quincy Butler was signed to take his roster spot. Gay has suffered multiple concussions over the past few seasons, creating some skepticism about his future in the league. The 28-year-old nickel back is due a $2.5 million salary in 2011. The Saints began the season as perhaps the NFL’s deepest team at corner. They’re suddenly among the thinnest with Gay gone and RCB Tracy Porter still nursing a torn knee ligament.
Quincy Butler-DB – Saints Mar. 31 – 9:15 am et Rams re-signed exclusive rights free agent CB Quincy Butler to a one-year, $470,000 contract. Butler would struggle to make most teams’ rosters as more than a special teamer, but he was a major contributor for the lowly Rams on defense last year, recording 28 tackles and breaking up five passes.

Rotoworld wrong again
Tracy doesn’t have a torn ligament. It’s was damage to the meniscus (cartilage), which is much easier to recover from and requires less rehab.
just reporting what they were told
rotoworld.com:
Tracy Porter-DB- Saints Oct. 6 – 3:34 pm et Saints coach Sean Payton clarified Wednesday that RCB Tracy Porter’s knee injury is a lateral meniscus tear. Initial reports had it as a partially torn (sprained) MCL. Either way, Porter had arthroscopic knee surgery and is out 3-4 weeks. Porter had emerged as a borderline shutdown corner, so his loss is a big blow to New Orleans.

fair enough
I did a quick search myself right after posting that. There did seem to be some confusion in the media about the exact nature of the injury. They rotoworld blurb above, though, is from today. The oct 6 one just shows that they they knew already. Sloppy.
kinda tells you how much you can rely on rotoworld- world of difference between torn cartilage and ligament

Hopefully any future Gay decisions will benefit the Saints' defensive scheme next season.

Jenkins to stay at free safety
Check out this tweet:
Payton said Malcolm Jenkins will stay at free safety despite the spate of injuries at cornerback.
Does that settle it for the Accountability Index, Stu? :)

I'm suprised, Sharper is not fast enough for corner and dammit we need a corner.

technically, that wouldn't rule out nickel back, would it?
I can definitely see situations where Williams would want both of them on the field in a nickel package. As for the accountability index, seems like that should have already been settled. Jenkins is the starting FS.
this sucks
is greer out? and when is tracey coming back?

I don't think Greer will be missing any games
at least, not from any current injury. Tracy’s injury was reportedly going to take 3-4 weeks. I’m guessing he’ll be ready to go for Pittsburgh.
Calm down. All is well. Randall Gay was nothing more than a camp body who managed to stow away on the roster for 31 games. If this loss was any less significant, Payton wouldn’t realize we were short a DB,

david and craft were camp bodies that stowed away
gay is much better than both of those clowns. tracey and greer out doesnt help… im not so worried about this week as much as pitt on halloween.

“gay is much better than both of those clowns.”
Marginally better than David, roughly equal to Craft, imho. If David was used as a nickel back as often as Gay was … and wasn’t getting paid the ridiculous amount of money it took to land him in UFA … odds are no one would have a beef with him and he’d still be on the roster today. There’s a trickle down effect there obviously, but Gay couldn’t cut it as a starter any more than David could and that’s the comparison you’re making.

I just realized why Gay’s much better.

Good luck, Randall
And thanks for all your help to our favorite team. Take care of yourself and make a full recovery.
to accurately assess Gay you have to follow what many defenses are doing now.
Recently a lot of pass defenses have shifted towards having one DB who is small, shifty, fast and a risk taker. An Assante Samuel type. This type of player is not a great tackler. Maybe not even a superb one on one guy in coverage. But someone who0 can play the amoeba type combi defenses that are becoming the new thing. A blend of man and zone coverage. It’s hard to find that DB that can do everything cover fast receivers, stout vs the run, big enough to not get out muscled by the likes of Colston, TO, etc. So, alternatively having a guy like Gay who is basically weak against the run and not very brawny, but has the assignment to go for it and try to jump routes and make plays ( and it’s too risky to have 2 or 3 or 4 DBs doing this) is what some teams have gravitated to. Some of the other DBs have to make sure that there is deep coverage to compensate. The Revis and Deion Sanders are so few and far between so this is almost a necessity in this era with so many great reveivers and 10-12 QBs that can pick you apart unless you do something to cross them up.
