Saints are dirty hitting m************
I know this is way late, but it's been bothering me so I'm going to purge.
Some of you know how much I like Malcolm Jenkins: A lot. One of my favorite players and now even more since he beat Sharper out of a job. But, I watched part of the game on TV last night. This play in particular, which I couldn't see very well from my seat. In my mind, Jenkins absolutely was hitting Josh Freeman in the knees. The out of bounds aspect was incidental Jenkins should have been fined for the hit at the knees, not for the little girl slap at Freeman's facemask.
Duncan noted in his film study that the Bucs were really annoyed at the Saints tackling low all game, particularly after Kareem Huggins went out with a season ending knee injury. I don't blame Freeman at all for getting up and getting in Jenkins' facemask after the play. That was some BS.
So are the Saints dirty players? Aggressiveness is one thing. Being tackled at the knees is another.
reggie_bush Reggie Bush I'll take a concussion any day before getting blind sided in my knees.
reggie_bush Reggie Bush Worst case scenario you get hit up top=concussion. Worst case scenario you get hit down low=knee surgery or possible end of career.

Duncan:
Freeman took offense to Jenkins’ hit near the sideline not because it was late but because it occurred near his knee. Saints defenders hit Bucs receivers two or three times earlier with low blows to the knee area, including a hit by Mitchell that knocked Kareem Huggins from the game. Winslow also got up gimpy after a couple of submarine shots by Harper. The Bucs finally had had enough and Freeman went after Jenkins, who was whistled for an unnecessary roughness penalty for the late hit and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taking a swing at Freeman.

Are we to take your poll seriously? I didn’t see the sarcasm font.
Yes, time flies. And where did it leave you? Old too soon...smart too late. - Mike Tyson
Actually...
It wasn’t a dirty hit… Once a QB leaves the pocket he becomes a runner and the same rules for tackling a RB applies… Josh Freeman is 6-5 250lbs to Malcolm Jenkins 180lbs. He was fine going low to bring him down, if he would have been in the field of play…. The only two times players are prevented from going low, is a blocker engaged with another player and QB’s INSIDE the pocket….
You can’t aim at a guy’s knees, ever. It looked very suspicious.
"He's every rich kid you knew in college who read The Fountainhead once and loved the idea that sharing is immoral."
Where is that written?? DB are taught to go low on bigger stronger RB’s… thats not to injure but most DB’s are giving anywhere from 20 to 40 lbs to a runner. As a DB you are taught not to hit there thighs and not to grab for ankles.

football blog or grammer class? I guess my punctuation are wrong also professor…. back to the original argument… yes a RB can chop (at the knees) a blitzing LB. A RB can be hit in the knees. the ONLY two times its illegal is a QB in the pocket and a blocker engaged with another player… thats the rules….

Mike,
I don’t have time to correct your grammar or your morals. It doesn’t matter if it is a game rule or not: Hitting an opponent with the intention to cause serious tissue damage or a concussion is wrong. It’s a shame I had to type that out for you.
"He's every rich kid you knew in college who read The Fountainhead once and loved the idea that sharing is immoral."
Why is aiming for the knees inherently dirty?
In the preseason and first three games everyone noticed the Saints poor tackling. From the arizona game on, all of a sudden the defense is playing well, and a lot of hits are going low. It’s more of a strategic advantage than dirty play. I don’t think the intent is to injure anyone…

Are you kidding me? This is completely incorrect. There are tons of people who get hit in the knees every game and there’s no problems. So you definitely can aim at “a guy’s knees”.
The difference is whether you are trying to tackle the person, which is permitted (usually), versus trying to block them, which very rarely is. But even then there are times that it’s considered just fine, such as when a RB chops down the blitzing DB to protect his QB.
Now if you meant you can’t aim at a QB’s knees, that’s another story. But even then, there are still restrictions. I’m not 100% sure what they all are, but I’m 99% sure they don’t continue after the QB has passed the line of scrimmage.
not talking about rules
Talking about intending to hurt someone. A hard hit aimed at the side of the knee. Go watch Jenkins again, that’s dirty. I don’t know what happened to Huggins, didn’t see it.
So, you’re saying the Bucs are pussies? EVERYBODY get’s hit in the knee, no big whup? Seems rather unlikely.

When I was watching the game, I thought the "late hit out of bounds"
aspect of that play was a bit iffy, but I can see how the refs called it the way they did.
In watching the replay of the hit numerous times, the part I was more worried about was the “helmet aimed at the knees” aspect of it.
I want an aggressive team that plays hard, but I do not want a bunch of cheap shot artists looking to take someone out more than make a good play. I think we’re getting close to being the latter…
It's gonna be a great year.
Hit from the side
If he’d made contact while Freeman’s foot was planted, there would have been tissue damage. I just watched it again. Dirty.
And yeah, me too, Hans. I like aggressive play, but this was over the line.

If that kind of hit was made on Reggie
I wonder if folks would feel differently about it…

there was some kerfluffle last year about Sanchize
“going low” on Vilma and taking him out during Sharper’s 90+ yard INT TD return.
I wonder how that hit compares to Jenkins’s’s hit on Freeman.
It's gonna be a great year.
Vilma was not carrying the ball - he was a blocker/escort
In that case, with the ball being returned against the offense, a hit to the knees or below is illegal. It was also really cheap, since Sharper had already passed Vilma – Sanchez was taking someone out behind the play.
yeah he didn't have a real shot at making a play on Sharper there
which is one of the biggest things to me on that play.

Voted for dirty playing
but the “Wimpy” reference made me laugh.

I dont have a problem with the play at all.
I didn’t think it was really a “dirty” play. Merriweather’s intentional helmet to helmet hit on Todd Heap was dirty, James Harrison throwing a helmet to helmet shot to the side of Josh Cribbs’ head is dirty. Sideline plays are tough. If Jenkins does nothing, Freeman might cut it up and get more yards. Also, offensive lineman go low on D-lineman all the time. Running backs go low on blitzing linebackers and DBs all the time too.
A defensive player can hit a player low to make a tackle. Mike Mckenzie made a living at it. Thats what made him so good in run support.

Please go watch that play again
To me, it gets uglier every time. The Saints are up 31-0 in the 4th quarter. Freeman is clearly headed for the sideline with no room to advance up field. Jenkins could have continued running and pushed him out of bounds if necessary. Instead he dives low for a side impact on the QB’s knee. Freeman gets up immediately and chases Jenkins down, who is hurrying back to his own sideline, and gets right up in his face because he knows it was intentional.
Bad form, ungentlemanly, uncalled for behavior.
"He's every rich kid you knew in college who read The Fountainhead once and loved the idea that sharing is immoral."
Jenkins was making a hustle play
Hustle to the sideline, make sure the QB doesn’t get any extra yards. He already committed to the hit and I really don’t have a problem with it. I’ll never complain about a player hustling to make a play. NEVER. I’ll take a penalty if the guy is giving it his all. The punch shouldn’t have been thrown, but Freeman got in his face and grabbed him by the neck. To me it says, we’re not backing down. Our defense is playing with swagger and confidence.
What should Jenkins have done? Apologize? Say, oh, I’m sorry I hit you. Thats not what I want from my defense. It’s their job to hit the offense in the mouth. Say, yea I hit you, and I’m gonna hit you on the next play too if I can.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
I'm actually ok with all this
As long as it wasn’t an intentional blow to the knee. As it appeared to be. Nothing close to this in the last 2 Wikings games, I had no problem with any of those hits either.
"He's every rich kid you knew in college who read The Fountainhead once and loved the idea that sharing is immoral."
This play is similar
Watch the Asomugha hit around 2:10
One of the best corners in the league. He gets praised for making plays like this.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
What I want to see if someone grabs a Saints player by the neck after the play
are their hands thrown up on the air, playing up the “I’m being choked” angle and then turning and looking for the ref, asking for a flag while pointing to the hands around their neck.
Then the player walks back to the huddle with calm body language, cooled by knowing he made another player lose THEIR cool.
But I also understand it’s a rough, physical game and you can’t always control your impulses, like when the Saints front 4 on D line collapse the pocket on a bewildered QB and I holler a boisterous “CRUSH HIM!!!!!”
It's gonna be a great year.

It was an unnecessary hit. He could’ve accomplished the same thing by pushing him. What gets lost in all this defensive player’s bravado is that the should be avoiding hurting someone if they can help it instead of headhunting (or in this case knee hunting)

If a defender punched Drew Brees in the head.....
I would expect ejection from the game. Why this did not happen, I don’t know. And no, I don’t think there is anyone who can convince me that Jenkins’ behavior was justified, so save it.
"Relax, have a homebrew."
If Drew Brees is pissed about a play and goes after a guy then if he gets punched in the head he deserves it…
Are you kidding me?

Williams said he takes some of the blame on Jenkins hit on Freeman last week cause he emphasized not letting QB gain extra yds on sideline
That makes me feel a little better.
"He's every rich kid you knew in college who read The Fountainhead once and loved the idea that sharing is immoral."
I only say this because there was no sarcasm font....
A good coach always tries to take the heat off of one of his players. I’m far from convinced it was an intentional cheap shot, but William’s comment shouldn’t have any bearing on making a determination one way or the other.
it didn't look dirty to me
i wish i had the game saved so i could see it again but from what i remember it looked fine to me. I didn’t think he was aiming at his knees. Was he aiming/tackling low? Yes he was but i don’t think it’s to intentionally hurt him. He’s finishing a play. Just because we’re up doesn’t mean we should relax. I like the way that Jenkins has been playing this season. He’s got this “knock the crap out of you” type of mentality and he’s being agressive. I’d have to watch the play again but it seemed fine to me the first time
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
“I kind of started slowing down and going out of bounds and he sped up,” Freeman said of Jenkins. “It’s ‘cool’ if you want to try to hit me, but hit me high, you know. I’m going out of bounds. I already had a foot out of bounds. I think it’s completely unnecessary and cheap to take a shot at my knees and I got up and let him know.”
Jenkins also took a swing at Freeman, but Freeman laughed that off, saying it was more likely to hurt Jenkins’ hand than anything else. “A swing doesn’t really do much when you’re wearing a helmet,” Freeman said.
