Carolina Panthers 14 @ New Orleans Saints 16: Dude, Where's My Offense?

Whew! I'm still trying to catch my breath. I sure do miss the days of seeing Drew and Co. hang a 40 burger on their opponents every other week. It was another ugly game, but that W is always pretty. On the other side of the ball, our D came up big in the 4th quarter and saved the game when it looked like another late field goal was about to beat us. We now move to 3-1, as do the Atlanta Falcons after narrowly defeating the 49ers today.

Chris Ivory and Ladell Betts filled in admirably enough while Pierre Thomas rested his ankle. Ivory had some good runs, but he really needs to learn better ball security. Let's hope Pierre is able to return next week. Our red zone offense was noticeably less effective without him and Reggie.

What's your take on the game?

I'm looking at the box score

which says Clausen beats Brees in passer rating 90.6 to 90.2. Is that a mistake? Brees has 60% more yards, 15 points better completion percentage, same 1 touchdown, same 0 interceptions and one less sack.

This is a perfect example of why the passer rating is useful, but not the be-all and end-all stat. It’s just a compilation of a bunch of stuff, so it gives you a rough measure of efficiency. Drew was pulled down because it took him three times as many completions to throw one touchdown. If Lance had managed to get into the end zone the first time, not only would the game have been much more fun to watch, but Drew would have beaten the Pickle Heir by ten or eleven points.

It was worth the wait.

Voted for Big Sed - at least one sack, two passes defensed, and a 3rd down tackle for loss to force a punt

Ball security issues killed us – left at least 10 points off the board for us.

We need to improve our red zone offense, too, and hit a big play some time.

I’m glad the defense stepped up at the end and sealed the deal. They played well today.

But an ugly win is better than a pretty loss…any time.

It would help if Drew wasn’t throwing at their knees/feet… but, I think it was because of his knee brace.

by Dan Kelly on Oct 3, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

seriously?

2, maybe 3 low passes out of 48 and your complaining about his accuracy? Did you see that pass to Shockey at the sideline? Or the one Colston over the middle (which sadly Colston failed to hold on to)? With the exception of maybe 4 passes and the first sack (Drew held it too long), I thought he looked very good today.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 3, 2010 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

3???

There were AT LEAST 6 or 7… that were dropped, and another 4 or 5 that were caught.

I’m not complaining about his accuracy… but, it would have made the game a lot easier if he wasn’t throwing where no one could catch it.

Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.

by Dan Kelly on Oct 3, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

nearly every drop I saw was on the receiver

Shockey dropped two very easy ones. Colston had one over the top and let it get knocked out of his hands. Betts dropped one that was a little low but very catchable. Henderson dropped one right on his hip – again, a little behind, but he’s got to make that catch. I think Henderson had another drop that was completely inexcusable. Brees did have a couple (out of 48!) that were pretty ugly. That goofy looking lob thing in the first quarter to Graham(?) was awful.

I’ve been questioning his accuracy, especially on deep passes, all year. I thought he looked better today than all three previous games. Granted, he didn’t have much opportunity for the deep passes, so can’t really judge that.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 3, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

The close score is definately not on Brees.

by Drew-Dat on Oct 3, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

IT wasn’t really about “ugly”…

There were 6 or 7 passes that were close… the receiver bent over, stretched out there hands at the last second, and was able to get their hands/finger tips on the ball… but they were dropped.

If those 6 or 7 passes were higher, they would have been caught.

Then there were 3 or 4 that were just as low, but the receivers reacted faster and were able to bend over and catch the ball.

So… 11 out of 48 were low… almost 25%.

Not ugly… just low.

Want to go to the Saints vs. Cowboys game? I've got an extra ticket.

by Dan Kelly on Oct 3, 2010 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

i disagree

there were some passes he threw low but that’s where the ball needs to be alot of the time because it gives your receiver a chance without letting the DB defend/intercept the pass. The pass to Shockey is a perfect example. Don’t get me wrong there were a few that were off target but alot of them could have been caught(like the Henderson drop). Also, we had 6 dropped passes.

Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!

Minus a couple of mistakes

Saints offense was pretty dominant today. Two turnovers in the red zone and some dropped balls (again?) hurt the scoreboard big time. Besides that, the Saints seemed to move the ball at will. 8/14 on 3rd down, 38:22 TOP, 69% completion rate, 122 rushing yards on 29 carries.

The 50 yard TD passes are not going to happen very often. That does NOT mean this isn’t a dominant offense. Mistakes need to be corrected, but things are definitely looking better. The O-Line in particular looked a lot better overall today than they did in the first three weeks.

by Jon Banks on Oct 3, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

they'll happen

just not with as much freqency. For one, most of the defenses the Saints play this year are substantially better than the ones they played last year. More importantly, D coordinators are going to do everything they can to stop those kind of plays. If an opponent can force the Saints to grind out yards like they did today, they know they have a much better chance of staying in the game. It “shortens” the game – fewer possessions for Drew means fewer scoring opportunities. Which also the opposing offenses to stick to their game plans.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 3, 2010 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with this

They were able to drive the ball down the field but just because they did that doesn’t mean they weren’t a sloppy mess. I can appreciate your positivity though. Would have liked to watch that game through your eyes.

I can't look at it like that

16 points isn’t a domimant offense. Dropped balls are apart of our offense and even though it’s correctible it’s still happening! Turnovers are also apart of the offense. Our offense wasn’t dominant at all! The Panthers forced turnovers at oppurtune times. We might have moved the ball a decent amount or yards but that doesn’t mean that much to me. We kicked 3 FGs and had 1 TD! If we had change those 3 FGs into 2 TDs and 1 FG then I’d feel better but kicking FGs isn’t going to win that many games for us. We’ve gotten lucky so far this year imo. Our defense has played out of their minds for the most part and has won all of the games so far. When we start putting more points on the board on a more consistent basis then we can be considered dominant. We are 14th in points and yards per game(might not include this week) so far. On defense we are 16th in points per game and tied for 22nd in yards per game. The defense created turnovers in the San Fransisco game, held the Vikings to 9 points and held the Panthers to 14 points. One bad game against Atlanta hurt them alot and they gave up alot of yards to the 49ers but also got turnovers. Just because we’ve been an offensive powerhouse the past few years doesn’t mean we automatically still are this year. Don’t get me wrong, I expect it to turn around sometime this season but so far we’ve been far from dominant

Quick thoughts...

1. Evans had a sub game. Again.
2. Lance, I love you like a brother but stop yapping so much, specially at the refs. Can’t go all prima donna over one good game this year.
3. This week dinged up list will welcome Shockey, Brees, Thomas (Dave), Smith, Porter, Prioleau and Reis.
4. Even if it would be unfair to ask Usama to learn a 3rd position, I’m curious to see what he could do as a free safety. I’m stlill convince he’d bring better coverage and tackling then anyone listed at that position on our roster, including Harper.
5. Malcolm, there is so much I can do defending you. Help me help you!
6. Don’t doubt it. That knee injury is bothering Brees a lot. We had some drops but he wasn’t all that tight on his throws anyway. Patrick Ramsey where are you!
7. What’s up with Greer losing his balance lately?

responses

1. I know – WTF?! I am beginning to fear chuck wagon syndrome.
2. Lance will be Lance. As long as he holds onto the ball and scores TDs, he can yak all he wants.
3. Shockey and Thomas got hurt??
4. Harper is a strong safety, and if I’m not mistaken, that was the position Usama was playing when he made that awesome tackle on Williams in the backfield.
5. He’s basically a rookie playing one of the tougher positions on defense. And the blown coverage on Carolina’s first TD was not really his fault – he had to cover the TE over the middle b/c he was completely open. Greer just screwed up and didn’t stick with his man – he bit on the play action.
6. You’re nuts. Brees completed 69% of passes, and would have had nearly 80% had the receivers not been drop happy.
7. I think he may be getting too aggressive. Or maybe he’s just used to having Sharper backing him up.

Chase spent his time on Redskins’ practice squad before we digged him up two weeks before our last year game against, you guessed it, Washington (how convenient). He still didn’t put a foot on the field in two years. I’ll bet you a kidney Saints will look at other QBs starting this week.

Personlly

I wouldn’t risk Drew Brees. Let him play some and pull him when his knee starts affecting the game just like you would with any other player. But I’m not a coach and I am new at this so that is just my rookie opinion ;)

I’m wondering if with all the distractions – book, commercials, interviews, family responsibilities – is Brees still puttting in all the preparation time that he did last year.

by GLT65 on Oct 3, 2010 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Lance isn't Lance no Moore...

Got his first great game in a year last week but dropped balls this week, something he NEVER does. And I can assure you he was much more “humble” in previous years. Maybe is agent told him to act up and get more TV sightings since he’s looking for a new contract but he has been doing it since the beginning of the season. I just know there is no way in the world he would have dismiss a congratuling Drew as he did today after his TD. Looks like he’s forgetting who made who…

Didn’t you notice how Shockey disappeared from the field toward the end of the game?He wasn’t even lined up on that crucial late 3rd down. As for Thomas, he got some nasty shots, specially on his knee.

I don’t think Greer screwed up. And since football IQ is suppose to be one of Jenkins better assets, I’m worried when I see kiddo still blowing off his assingment. That was clearly the safety’s man on that play.

Add Shockey yelling at Brees to throw it higher next time when our TE should have caught that ball and I’m a bit worried about team chemistry. Even if Drew was nice enough to go right back at him for a first down, something just doesn’t feel quite right.

why is Chase holding for Carney?

Is Morestead part of the fat punk kicker’s problem?

not sure what that's about

Duncan mentioned it in his in-game updates, and only said that Morstead holds for Hartley, but Daniel holds for Carney

by Dan Kelly on Oct 3, 2010 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I think player of the game should go to both Carney and Betts.

Betts did great and seemed to inspire confidence as he wasn’t looking fumble prone and could be depended upon to pick up the blitz. Made some great runs . Ivory is talented , but you were holding your breath with him. If he learns how to hold onto the ball, he could be scary good.

Carney was awesome- to not even be on a team until 7 days ago- couoldn’t have won it without him IMO.

so I guess they will be having the same concerns that we shared these

PT, Sharper and Reggie were sure missed today

And WTF were all of those drops? Shockey especially was hit and miss all night.

More than anything it’s the lack of uniformity, confidence and mojo that scares me. I never got from Brees he wanted to be there or got any enjoyment from playing. It has seemed like that since week 1. They come out strong in every game, giving us a quick glimpse of last year’s team, then it’s starts to crumble. Of course it’s not only dependent on him but when your leader starts to check out it’s going to have a significant effect on the entire team.

Brees does seem a little distracted

I hope there aren’t any potential problems with his wife and the baby she’s about to have. She’s due pretty soon. Whatever it is, Drew definitely doesn’t seem as sharp and focused as he normally does. I refuse to believe in the Madden Curse, so I hope no one blames it on that. I’ll just continue to trust that he’ll figure it out. It’s not like he had an awful game or anything. He’s spoiled us into expecting a 300+ yard, 3+TD performance every week.

The bottom line is....

We lost to the only good team we’ve played so far this year in OT.

Our three wins have come against teams that are a combined 1-10 by a grand total of 10 points.

We’re 3-1 and would be 4-0 if not for FPK. All things considered, I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. I’ll have to wait and see.

Two things for certain:
1. We’ll need to get our mojo back in the second half of the season to have any chance of getting anywhere near the Super Bowl.
2. Thank God the NFC isn’t looking too good overall.

by Drew-Dat on Oct 3, 2010 5:09 PM CDT reply actions

21 points in the 1st half and almost lose to the Lions with a backup QB?

Shouldn’t you take it up with members over at Cat Scratch Reader (what a lame name)? Pretty sure you’ll get much more fun doing it over there then here. Untill you’d get ban posting “Veni, vidi, vici” that is.

Got lucky on the first win, played a terrible cowboys team, then the Packers beat themselves. I have a feeling this is an AFC year.
