Safety Chris Reis Placed on IR, Season Over

Not very long after learning about Tracy Porter's sprained MCL, which will cause him to miss 2-4 weeks, we have now found out that safety Chris Reis is done for the year after needing season-ending shoulder surgery.

Mike Triplett from the Times-Pic again has the source and the story yet again, so good work there...

The exact injury was not specified, but it will require surgery

This sucks because not only are the Saints really thin right now at safety already but Reis was also a huge contributor on special teams.

Star-divide

Here is a quick look at the current Saints safety's. Warning: It's ugly.

Chris Reis (IR - Out for year)

Darren Sharper (Out for 2 weeks)

Roman Harper (Hamstring)

Pierson Prioleau (Chest)

Malcolm Jenkins

Usama Young

Sean Payton said he expects to bring in some guys for workouts tomorrow.

**Props to HansDat for being the first to get this out to everyone.**

Tyrone Carter-DB- Redskins Sep. 4 – 1:41 pm et Redskins released S Tyrone Carter. 34, was added a couple weeks ago when Kareem Moore (knee) went down. It’s likely that the Redskins found out Carter’s gas tank is on empty.
Tyrone Carter-DB – Redskins Jan. 27 – 2:44 pm et The Steelers are not expected to retain free agent S Tyrone Carter. Carter can still play special teams, but was obviously stretched as an 11-game starter at strong safety last season. The 5’9/195-pound 34-year-old is unlikely to get more than a one-year, minimum deal on the open market.

Michael Lewis-DB- 49ers Oct. 4 – 6:56 pm et
49ers released SS Michael Lewis.
Rookie Taylor Mays will close out the year as San Francisco’s starting strong safety, with Reggie Smith as No. 3, behind also FS Dashon Goldson. Lewis, 30, will appeal only to teams willing to use a coverage-deficient DB in the back end. The former Eagle was also missing a lot of tackles early on.
Michael Lewis-DB – 49ers Oct. 4 – 6:08 pm et 49ers have reportedly decided to grant SS Michael Lewis his release, with the transaction scheduled for Tuesday. Lewis requested the move after being benched for Taylor Mays prior to Week 4. Lewis has a limited skill set as purely an “in the box” safety. The 30-year-old would be a candidate for a minimum-salary deal in free agency. Lewis’ poor run support has cost him his job, with youngsters Taylor Mays and Reggie Smith taking over.
Probably better than Roman Harper though, right CP?? Right??

We could probably get him for a low round draft pick, considering the Ravens just released him and brought him back. Or sell high on Lance Moore, since we’re likely to lose him in free agency at the end of the season anyway. Not saying Baltimore needs another WR, but I’m sure someone with a spare DB would bite on that.

I'm not ready to release Moore-especially for Hamlin- we're not that desperate

Hamlin is not THAT awesome, and I think there are some alternatives available, and it’s only temporary since Harper, Sharper, and Prioleau will be back. But we need somebody.

Harper, Sharper, Young, Prioleau and Jenkins. We typically only keep four safeties to begin with. Six was a bit overkill, imho. It does temporarily cut down on our flexibility with Jenkins as the go-between at CB, but if you think of him as the 5th (lagniappe), then we’re still ahead of the curve, at least in terms of a head count. I still think there are better pure safeties out there.

This guy is worth a look

Myron Rolle- Tennessee Titans – inexperienced but a lot of upside

http://www.titansonline.com/team/roster/Myron-Rolle/256fb747-502b-498d-8ffb-af4d4c0fe3dc

is a team allowed to sign a player from someone else’s practice squad and then, after a week or 2, place him on their own practice squad? Anyone know??

The Rhodes Scholar?

Character wise you can’t get any better than him.

“During his final football season at Florida State, Rolle was team’s third-leading tackler, an Associated Press third-team all-American and a finalist for the Lott Trophy defensive player of the year award, which, according to its website, gives “equal weight to personal character as well as athletic performance.”

He also was only second-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference, and he finished his three-year college career with one interception."

Too much studying, not enough working out

rotoworld.com:

Myron Rolle-DB- Titans Sep. 6 – 9:16 am et Titans signed S Myron Rolle to their practice squad. Rolle passes through waivers, confirming the limited interest in the Rhodes Scholar around the league.
Myron Rolle-DB – Titans Sep. 4 – 1:22 pm et Titans waived S Myron Rolle. It will be interesting to see if the Rhodes Scholar clears waivers. He was originally projected as an early-round pick before turning forty times in the 4.6 – 4.8 range at the Combine. We’re betting he goes unclaimed.

TOTAL BS

That kid is amazing. He took advantage of a brilliant opportunity and never missed a beat training. Anyone with that much self control and dedication is a perfect addition to a team. He might need to work on his speed but you put him up to any challenge and I guarantee he doesn’t back down.

“I sacrificed a lot in my Rhodes scholarship experience to stay in shape, make sure I was ready and pride myself for this exact moment,” Rolle said Saturday after the Tennessee Titans grabbed him with the final pick in the sixth round.

“Where my classmates were drinking at the pubs at 1:30 in the morning or traveling to different parts of the EU, I was working out, training, going to sleep, resting my body, making sure I was ready to compete. I love this game. I love this sport, and I want it to be my vocation for the next 10 years.”

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Rolle finished his undergraduate degree in pre-med in 2½ years, then took off from football in 2009 to study in Oxford. He entered the draft and waited to hear his name until the Titans called and used the 207th pick overall on him.

Rolle noted his strength coach, Tom Shaw, gave him a two-hour workout that he and his brother followed six days a week between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. to keep himself in shape. He also worked with a rugby team and returned in mid-December to start preparing for his return to football at the Senior Bowl in January and the NFL Combine in February.

He said he listened to the advice of former Rhodes scholars and top athletes like Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Bradley not to eat or drink too much while in Oxford."

Yes, but he would have to clear waivers and odds are Tennessee would reclaim him.

Not quite. You can sign him but you have to keep him for three weeks. Then you could try to sneak him back to the PS once you no longer needed him.

And Tennessee couldn’t claim him on waivers unless they put him on their active roster. Which they might do, but also might not.

Here’s a familiar name. Possible CB depth, while Robinson fills in for Porter? I would think McKenzie would be more likely, but it’s another option.

A lot of these 30something CBs would probably make halfway decent safeties.

Jimmy Williams – 2nd round pick by the Falcons in 2006, suspended for marijuana use. Currently playing in the UFL. Might be worth a gamble, if he finally has his act together.

Pat Watkins – 6’5" SS, excellent special teams player for the Cowboys. Suffered a knee and a neck injury last year, but received a clean bill of health this past offseason, before being released in a cost cutting move.

If I remember correctly and I don't know if I do

There is an agreement with the UFL that says players can’t sign with the NFL till thier season is over.
