What's Wrong with the Saints? Per Prisco and Judge...

The two give a short summary of why they think we're struggling.  Personally, I was expecting way more thrashing and bashing from them.  I'm with Dave, we look different.  Yet I chalk it all up to injuries and balance.  i think Payton would like to be more balanced but with the RB's hurt, it's kind of hard.  Any chime in and let me know what yall think.  I gotta get back to work.

the injury bug has def bit us

but there should not be any excuses why this team isn’t performing offensively… sorry but we shouldn’t be in the middle of the pack in the nfl offensively with or without reggie. they need to stop moping around when they drop a pass or fumble the ball and start behaving like the werewolf with a chainsaw dick team that they were last year.

They need that spark and anger back!

It’s almost like they’re just one play or one mistake that needs fixing to get back to the high powered offense.

I’m confident it will come back

It's the chant

Drew’s pre-game chant is different this year. Hence, different mojo. That, and the black pants.

It was worth the wait.

I was thinking about that the other day when the pregame chant was shown but what I think is different is the players surrounding Brees are not as pumped up this time around.

Noticed that last Sunday

Different chant. He needs to back to old chant. Loved that one.

the chant this year is crappy.

he needs to call an audible and try a new one

Dallas has the worst chant/pre-game warrior circle with Brooking all bugged eyed in the middle hopping around like a frog who just licked himself

Completely agree.

I don’t like the new chant. The clapping thing is kind of lame. The last 2 chants were great. This one…not so much.

Correct me if I'm wrong

but with the one game that both of our main RBs were hurt(last game), we did better rushing the ball(as far as yards and ypa) than we had done at any time with the main backs. Also, I don’t think that our offense will start clicking untill Brees start clicking and he’s not on it

Not especially more

We had 25 carries by RBs against Carolina. In the previous 3 weeks we’ve had 21, 23, and 16 carries. The 16 came in the Atlanta game when Bush didn’t play at all. So with both of our starting RBs healthy we’ve had a 22 carries per game average(only 2 games to go off though). With both hurt, we had 25. I think that the reason that we had 25 against the Panthers is because they ran the ball much better earlier in the game. I’m just intrigued that our backups did better than our starters. Did the line pick up their game last week? Were the Panthers just that easy to run on? Are the backups better than the starters or did they just have a great game?

If they believe the offense has been struggling all year

how can they turn around and say that it’s because of Reggie Bush? He’s missed two games out of four. Either he was a non-factor in the first two, in which case they wouldn’t miss him that much, or it’s another reason entirely.

Personally, I don’t think the Saints offense has been “struggling”. There is a huge gap between having a record breaking season and struggling. I think the biggest difference so far has been with the offensive line, and they have recently begun to play better. Another difference is that opponents had 18 games of tape from last year’s best offense to figure out how to take away the big plays, and yet Drew still has 10 completion over 20 yards.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 7, 2010 6:41 AM CDT reply actions

Brees has been doing this since 06

so why is it just now that we’re struggling to put up points?

by skinnykinney on Oct 8, 2010 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

good point

I don’t think it’s a problem with Drew or missing Reggie though. I’d point to missed FGs, opponents defending the Saints better, and a lack of short fields from takeaways. I’ve been saying for a while now that the Saints are still an elite offense, but not a record breaking offense like last year. They’ve also faced 4 teams with much better defenses than they did in the first 4 games last year. The exception would be the Jets, and the offense only scored 10 points in that game.

by HB-NOLA on Oct 9, 2010 3:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I take issue with the title of the post LOL

I don’t think there is anything “Wrong” with the Saints, it’s more a question of what is different. That is an important distinction. I think that we will see some improvement, but folks have to come to grips with the fact that the chances of them having the exact same type of amazing season they had last year is not likely. I’m sure that most members of the MSM are aware of that fact, but if they acknowledge it they wouldn’t have as much to write about! Understand that doesn’t mean that they won’t get to the playoffs or the Super Bowl. They just might have to go about it in a slightly different way…

maybe we should borrow a "bit" from SNL

and instead of “What’s wrong…?” we can use this:

“The Saints 2010 offense: OOOOOOweeeeeeeee! What up with that, what up with that?”

This skit is a pretty dumb premise but it makes my wife and I laugh every time…

It's gonna be a great year.

Last year they were on a mission.

As hard as they have tried, they haven’t got into that “mission” mode yet. It’ll come. This adversity is good for us because we don’t want anyone saying we got lucky 2 years in a row!!! (Schmucks that they are…)

Could the turf be an issue?

We are having a lot of injuries.
Anybody have any insight on this?

Early in the game last week, grounds crew members ran out on the field during a stoppage in play and proceeded to beat the black rubber pellets back down into a section of turf. Evidently, it got torn up during the pre-game band performance and/or team introductions. I’m kind of thinking it may have been the scooter that the mascot spins donuts on. In any case, it’s a specific example of the playing surface not holding up very early in the season. Isolated incident or not, I have no idea.

You could definitely see the damage, though. It was maybe a two square yard dark patch, when the rest of the field is only dark in much smaller streaks and splotches.

I think there are always going to be more injuries on artificial turf

but I think there are plenty of other teams that have been hit hard by injury and it happens every year. The good thing is many of the saints injuries are not season- ending injuries.

1) teams now have a year's worth of film on us as an AWESOME juggernaut on offense

so they can better game plan for us.

2) injuries to our offensive backfield and secondary.

3) not as many takeaways on defense.

4) more takeaways/giveaways on offense

5) as well as dropped passes on offense

6) poor blocking by the OL at times.

7) Young place kicker with the “yips”.

With all that together, we’re just not in a groove yet, although we are 3-1.

Let’s keep working at it, get healthy, and see where we are when the dust settles in December (hopefully resting on a bye on wildcard weekend, wondering who we’ll play the following week).

It's gonna be a great year.
