For the record, Zach Strief said his stumble was the reason for the goal-line incompletion, said Brees' pass was put where it needed to be. -Jeff Duncan via twitter

I'm calling BS
Good soldier protecting his QB. The pass was overthrown and would have been a challenge to jump and catch while standing flat footed, clearly overthrown.
The intercepted pass was clearly underthrown due to Brees’ weak arm. As was at least one another pass that I can’t remember right now.
Which brings to mind what the future will hold for us when Drew Brees turns Carson Palmer (unable to bring the magic reliably). It’s going to be ugly.

Disagree
Strief clearly stumbled off the line. That step cost him the TD and probably the NFL record for the biggest, heaviest man to ever catch a TD pass.

(I hate to say this) but I agree with Stu's point about the Strief throw and his comment.
It was CLEARLY overthrown… even if he didn’t stumble, it would have been over his head.
He’s a freakin’ lineman, not Colston… or even Mike Vrabel. Throw it to his chest, man!
Strief knows it. We all know it. He’s just protecting his QB, for all the people who didn’t actually see the throw.
I disagree, Stu
as I posted in Andrew’s Player Grades thread…
Strife (I misspelled it on purpose) stumbled coming off his block on that tackle eligible pass in the red zone, and had to pick himself up off the ground before turning to try and catch that pass. I think if he makes a clean release from the block, he’s further in to the end zone when that pass arrives, and he doesn’t even have to jump for it. Poor, slow, lumbering, stumble-footed Zach. It’ll be another four years before they throw to him again…
It's gonna be a great year.

but I agree that Drew underthrowing those deep balls is troubling
will he be able to adapt to his diminishing skills?
If he goes into STEEP DECLINE like Palmer, it will indeed be ugly.
And if you think about it, poor Palmer… he had what, one good year as an elite QB (2005), and then a bunch of years of not-quite-as-good and now he sucks. 2003 rode the pine, 2004 18 TDs/18 ints, 2005 30+ TDs and a division title, 2006 did not play, 2007 soso, 2008 soso, 2009 just under soso but won the division, 2010 steep decline
It's gonna be a great year.

hmmm well that's interesting
:9:46: Zach Strief finally gets his chance! And doesn’t catch it. Strief, who always checks in as an eligible receiver was finally thrown one, Brees put it too high and even though he was wide open, he couldn’t get it.He didn’t say “Brees put it right in his breadbasket” or “That was a very catchable ball thrown to Strief”. The ball was high whether Strief stumbled or not, and he was wide open: No need to throw it out of reach of the defender because there was no defender. Strief stumbled, yes. But Brees released the ball too soon causing it to sail. There is no question about it.

I'm looking for these, they find ME
9:20 – Brees misses a wide-open Zach Streif on a tackle-eligible pass.

oops, damn you Freud
I’m NOT looking for them… never mind.
AP:
In the third quarter, right tackle Zach Strief, who had reported as an eligible receiver, was wide open in the end zone, but was backpedaling and unable to jump high enough to snag a short pass Brees lobbed over his head.Again, Mr. Accuracy could have hit him in the numbers with it. Or the facemask. Or the belt buckle. But no.

OK -you are correct in that aspect - I spoke too strongly of the stumble's impact...didn't mean to imply Brees threw a perfect pass
Brees did not throw a good pass at all on that play, and that was unfortunate for Strife, who will not get another chance to score for a long while.
It's gonna be a great year.
You were right to begin with, Hans
It’s a timing play. Brees throws the ball the same regardless of what Strief does, because there is no time to make an adjustment on a play like that. The receiver is just supposed to be there. He had a completion to Colston like that – threw the ball before Colston had even made the break in his route. If Strief doesn’t stumble, he is at least one step, maybe two, further into the endzone, and makes the catch. It was intentionally throw high in case a defender peeled off to try to block it. Remember that Strief is 6’7".

There were no defenders around. That’s what “wide open” means. Mr. Accuracy pulled the trigger too soon and it sailed over the outstretched fingertips of the 6’ 7" receiver. End of story.
"Eunuch!"
By the time Drew threw the pass, Strief was falling down
That’s why it went over his outstretched fingertips.
that's correct
A half second after the snap. Strief was at a, maybe, 110 degree angle. Like this: / And Brees throws it so high it went over his fingertips. High. It was a high throw, like Brees felt phantom pressure and had to get rid of it fast.
"Eunuch!"
let me fix that for ya
like Brees felt phantom pressure and had was running a timing play and was supposed to get rid of it fast.
Here’s another one for good measure:
Drew Brees failed to connect on a first-and-goal from the 1, as the ball sailed over Strief’s head. …
