Fleur-de-Links - Nov. 28th: Packers Get Cheesed by Falcons
The Packers let us down, but the Ravens came through. The Dirty Birds remain atop not only the NFC South but also the NFC with their 9-2 record. We're now tied with the Bears for the second best NFC record at 8-3. I keep waiting for the luck to run out in Atlanta, but that hasn't happened yet. These Falcons are pretty damn good. At least we finally managed to separate ourselves from the Bucs. Can there be any doubt that the NFC South is the best division in football this year?
Lots of interesting games around the league today. Did you see the brawl that happened in Houston? That looked like a UFC fight. Andre Johnson landed a few good punches in that one. A link to the video is after the jump.

Very doubtful AJ will get suspended
He’s already issued a public apology and it’s clear that Finnegan instigated the fight. He’s well known as a dirty player and I’m sure the league officials will take that into account. AJ got the game ball yesterday from his team despite getting ejected. The Texans owner even praised him afterwards. Finnegan is an ass**** and deserved what he got.

alexbrown96 Are the Falcons the luckiest team in the league??? Damn it GB!!
I would love to call them lucky, but people called us lucky last year. (sigh) I just get this bad feeling with the Falcons.
Week 13 matchup: Bengals
Week 13 motto: Keep in the race, keep in the fight
They're good.
Really good. Our team has to split the series with them or we’re in trouble.
"In fact, Sterger claims that, in one of the photos Favre allegedly sent her, he's masturbating — while wearing a pair of Crocs"
If they don’t lose another game in addition to the Saints, our splitting the series doesn’t make any difference. They will still win the division and probably have home field advantage throughout and we’ll still be a wild card (even if we have a 13-3 record).
Meanwhile, the two teams tied for first place in the NFC West both have losing records. Go figure.
Why couldn't we be in the NFC West?
Or the Falcons be in the NFC East? I would love the Boys in the South, I’d get to wear my saints jersey after we beat their ass more often.
Week 13 matchup: Bengals
Week 13 motto: Keep in the race, keep in the fight
Because Jerral Jones is an annoying twerp who screamed and twisted arms until he made sure his team stayed in the NFC East. And granted they do have a good bit of rivalry history there, but geographically there is absolutely no reason to put them in the East and the Falcons in the South.
Oh well.
Actually...
It would make more sense to put the Panthers in the East than the Falcons.
As for the Falcons, and whether they’re good or just lucky: who cares? They can be both, but we’re a team of Destiny. After the Janking™ of Dallas, how can you doubt it?
It was worth the wait.
Falcons:
Saints,Bengals,Tampa,49ers, Green Bay, Ravens. I’m missing more I know.
Week 13 matchup: Bengals
Week 13 motto: Keep in the race, keep in the fight
Ravens wasn’t luck, it was cheating. Which is even worse. If that OPI is properly called they are pushed back a critical 10 yards (out of field goal range) and have one, maybe two more plays at most to try to get back in. Makes a huge difference in those last few seconds of the game.
Cleveland could count as a bit of luck, as they were in at least mild danger of losing until that ridiculously good play by their DL.
St. Louis was a lot closer than the score indicated. That was at least partial luck.
Getting Pitt without Little Ben would have counted as luck had they won. Well it was still luck anyway, it would likely have been far worse a loss had they not.
Getting Carolina at the end of the season twice, when they suck even worse than they did early on in the season, that counts as luck.
Getting almost all their most important games of the season against teams who would otherwise have a legitimate chance to beat them (BAL, GB, even CIN — not now, but at the time they had a shot) and no late-season northern-climate away games, that’s either luck or some really nice “help” from outside.
Does that mean they aren’t also good? No. But they aren’t truly as “awesome” as some people think they are. They are beatable. If they face the Eagles again, the Eagles will destroy them again. Part of that is how badly they match up to begin with, but Philly really is a better team, just with a bit harder schedule so it doesn’t show in the standings. If White doesn’t cheat, at least 7 times out of 10 on a neutral field the Ravens would beat them as well. We at least have a shot, so long as our kicking game doesn’t screw us up again. Tampa can keep it close and at least scare them, unless Grimm’s injury makes a huge difference. The Patriots would absolutely destroy them, and the way the Chargers are playing right now ditto. Colts might get them if they weren’t so incredibly banged up.
But regardless of lucky or good or any combination of the above, short of a near-miracle they will win homefield in the playoffs. So we’ll have to prove that we are (assuming we really are) the better team by beating them on their own turf.
But if we do, victory will taste EXTRA sweet.
I don't know man...
I think the Eagles are definitely trouble but their secondary got exposed tonight. Maybe that’s due to Samuel’s leadership being absent or etc., but after watching them play, I’m like dang, they’re actually pretty good. I could be wrong cuz they barely beat the Packers, who I think ran the ball less than 10 times…
2010 is cuzzin's breakout year...run with that chip bruh!
Bob,
Tampa lost yesterday and will take it out on the birds this weekend. They have the team to do it and they are real lucky like the birds. So I think Tampa will win this weekend and the Saints will only be a half game behind the number one luckiest team. Well, maybe the Jets are the luckiest team, hard to decide on that one.
Curious
If we split the series with them and both us and them win out. What tiebreaker do they hold to win the division over us? Both have 1 afc loss and out of division NFC loss and split meetings.

It is definitely your time to get lucky, that’s for sure. But you haven’t faced a single AFC team with a winning record and won fairly without cheating. Good luck in the big game in Dallas if you get there, for you will need 10 times more than you’ve already gotten all season long just to have a chance.
Saints missing a 27 yard fg in overtime seems pretty lucky to me

Not really
That buys into the Viqueens’ outlook. The Saints messed up; the Falcons didn’t. Not messing up is part of playing winning football, and Atlanta won fair and square.
Luck is something like your wide receiver flagrantly shoving down a defender on a winning score, and not getting called for it because the incompetent official wasn’t paying attention.
It was worth the wait.
and remember how there's been much talk of "a whole new year" and a "whole new team"?
Well, we will have a whole new path to Lombardi…
Pittsburgh in 2005 and NYGiants in 2007 both took the wild card path to Super Bowl wins – if this is our year and our time, then we will make our way there however we can. We can still win the division and possibly one of the top 2 seeds in the NFC, but we need to win out and for Atlanta to lose once besides to us…
This will be an exciting final five weeks of the season!
It's gonna be a great year.

If we have to play a playoff game in cold conditions, I’ll be worried. We could still win, but I still have bad memories of playing the NFCCG in Chicago in 2006.

by Hans Petersen on Nov 29, 2010 11:11 AM CST up reply actions
OK so let’s look on the bright side. If Atlanta wins the division, they will also get the #1 seed. Nobody else has a realistic chance to catch them. GB is now 2 games plus head-to-head behind, essentially a three game lead. Eagles are two games back, although they have the head to head in their favor, but they don’t have a cakewalk schedule coming up.
Bears are only one game back but they have a critical two game trail position on the conference record. There is no head to head to use here. And while common games comes first, we know Atlanta has about a 95% chance of winning or at least tying that, as both beat GB, and tho the bears beat the Eagles the Falcons will almost certainly beat the Seahawks.
Last up we have the Giants, also two games back with no head-to-head. Again the common games will likely break at least even for the Falcons here. Both lost to Philly, both (will have) beat(en) Carolina, ditto on Seattle. And again the conference record is at least currently in Atlanta’s favor and more likely to grow than shrink.
So we may have to play the NFC Championship in their dome. (Granted, assuming we get there, but we have a good shot at it, especially if we are the #5 seed.) And we know full well that we can do it. Will we? No idea. Can we? Absolutely. And in some ways, watching their dejected fans stream out while we get to party on THEIR turf would make it 10 times as sweet.
Shut up Alex...

It is time to come to terms with the fact that...
the falcons are good and aren’t losing, except perhaps to us. I can’t see the bucs beating them, nor the Panthers, Seahawks etc. The good news is that I’d much rather go on the road to Atlanta for the NFC Championship than Chicago, Green Bay or Philly
"But tonight the Superbowl belongs to the City of New Orleans" - Roger Goodell 2/7/2010
They may slip up in Seattle
They’ll have to travel across the country for that one (usually puts a strain on the visiting team), and the Hawks play much better in their own house when they have that incredible crowd noise helping out. The Falcons will definitely be the better team, but we can still hold out hope for them losing that game. I’m sure Payton is using this as motivation right now. He has to have our guys figuring they must win out in order to land a favorable playoff spot. I’d feel very uncomfortable about getting a win in Chicago, Philly, or Green Bay during the first week of the playoffs. Traveling to Seattle or St. Louis that week wouldn’t worry me so much.
Damn that Garrett Hartley! If he hadn’t missed that kick the playoff positions would be reversed and the Falcons would be chasing us. It’s not all his fault, though. We had other opportunities to win that game.

I was just working on that scenario
…and you posted first. So I have to retype all this as a reply. I guess I could just cut and paste, but it’s too late now. Damn.
Suppose Atlanta wins the division and the first seed. The Saints will no doubt be the 5th seed, so they go play at the weakest division winner—the Rams or Seahawks. Okay, we win that one.
Meanwhile, suppose Chicago actually wins the North and Green Bay takes the 6th seed. They win their wild card game, and that sends them to Atlanta in the divisional playoff round. I sense revenge. Plus, the Saints beat whoever they have to play…maybe the Bears, maybe the Eagles, maybe the Giants.
That puts the NFC Championship game in the Dome, against the Packers. It could happen. We could win this thing without having to go to Atlanta at all.
Or we could go to Atlanta and kick their feathered butts.
It was worth the wait.
