Fleur-de-Links - Nov. 30th: Drew Brees Named SI Sportsman of the Year

Our main man Drew Brees was busy making the rounds in NYC today while discussing the team and his Sports Illustrated "Sportsman of the Year" award. He appeared on ESPN, the Today Show, and will soon appear on Martha Stuart's "Living" to tell how to cook a delicious gumbo. OK, the last one I made up, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility. Our QB is a very popular guy and deservedly so. Congrats on the award, Drew. It couldn't have been awarded to a better person.

Now Sportsman of the Year, Brees must be even better for Saints to pass Falcons
SI’s announcement coincides with Brees playing his best football of the current season, and Brees is going to have to maintain or raise his current level of play if the Saints are going to make a run at all reminiscent of their run last season.

For not only leading the New Orleans Saints to the first Super Bowl title in the franchise's history, but also for helping lead the city of New Orleans' rebirth after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, quarterback Drew Brees is the recipient of Sports Illustrated's 57th Sportsman of the Year award. * Even though they didn’t play Sunday after Thursday’s 30-27 win over Jones’ Dallas Cowboys, it was a very good day for the New Orleans Saints to end their three-day holiday. It would have been better if the Green Bay Packers had been able to defeat the Atlanta Falcons, who lead the Saints by just one game in the NFC South race with five games left, but there was nothing the Saints could do about that after beating the Cowboys.

Looking at NFC South Power Rankings - NFC South Blog - ESPN
The New Orleans Saints moved up to No. 6 after almost losing a Thanksgiving game at Dallas they should have run away with early. But I think this ranking is about right. In fact, I really respect the way AFC North blogger James Walker voted. Although he's an AFC guy, he had the Saints at No. 4.
