Some Observations

I was at the game on Sunday and had a great time. I almost got into a shouting contest with an irritating drunk fan in back of me, but my daughter kept reminding me about my heart and quieted me down. He was gone by halftime anyway.

I saw a couple of things that bothered me. One, Bushrod looks lost. He had at least two, but I think three, false starts. Additionally Drew does not look comfortable in the pocket. He looked to have happy feet, which is not characteristic of Drew. He hurried at least five throws without planting his feet. One resulted in an interception and the others went into the dirt. Has he lost that much confidence in his offensive line?

I also want to give coodos to Anthony Hargrove. I was at the tunnel where the players exited. Several of the players acknowledged the fans. Some threw hats and gloves to the fans, but Anthony came over to the stands and gave out his tokens and gave every fan holding his/her hand over the side a high five. I was impressed. Some others could take note. It was cold by then and many of those fans had come a long way and stayed until the end of the game to cheer their team. It was worthy of a little more recognition than it got.

Another note, we got noticed by NFL films by chanting Who Dat. They filmed it. We were maybe a couple hundred fans, but made them take notice.

Good to see Hargrove acknowledging the fans.

Kid’s come a long way in the last few years.

As to Brees…i don’t know. The one throw, the int, was a bobbled snap that he then rushed out because the timing was already off due to the mishandling of the ball. A lot of people have said that Brees has happy feet…but most of the time it’s just him constantly shuffling and keeping active in the pocket so that he can move and slide. First game jitters without the knee brace/sleeve? He seemed to settle down, and the Cats do have a decent D.

i put the interception on Meachem

it looks like he just completely stopped on his route when the ball was bobbled. If he wouldve continued on his route i think it hits him in the stomache/hip area. Instead, he stops and has to dive for it to pop it up.

similar to the Ladell Betts carom off the hands

Oops wasn’t expecting that to come that quickly.

I suppose it has to be blamed on the receiver, “it touched his hands” and all that.

But I blame Brees. His spidey sense, in detecting how close the unseen defenders are to him, is not working well. He panicked and threw that pass (same as the Betts pick) off his good leg, if he has one. A quick pump before the throw would have allowed both receivers to prepare for the reception, but he got rid of both of them like hot potatoes.

I didn’t see it as a panicked pass due to defenders. I saw it as a timing pattern that Brees rushed, because the timing got thrown off due to the snap bobble. Maybe that’s just me. This one i don’t necessarily blame on Brees. I did, however, blame Brees for the Betts pick. Way too much juice on that ball for a short pass to a RB.

you definitely saw it differently

I’d say fumble rather than bobble, I thought he picked it up off the ground and heaved it as soon as he saw Meachem.

To my eyes, the INT was on Brees

He bobbled the snap, then panicked a bit and rushed the throw. Yes, Meacham got a hand on it, but it was low and behind, and MAYBE Spidey himself could have plucked it out of the air, but I doubt any NFL receiver would have.

Other than that one miscue, he looked fine, I didn’t get the impression he was uncomfortable at all.

That's on Brees

Like that shovel to Jimmy Graham that got picked few weeks ago. He should just lose the down when the snap is botched

I’m in favor of trying to recover IF somebody is WIDE open. Short of that, throw it at their feet, make sure to avoid intentional grounding but throw it in the dirt and try again on the next down.

What bugged me a bit...

…was that he actually HAD time to recover, but he didn’t. The O line had created a good pocket and he was not under any pressure. If he’d taken a step back and looked it over, he could have possibly found a receiver that was open, or then realized it was a DOA play and tossed it out of bounds.

That said, I’m pickin’ nits here, the dude was on FIRE the rest of the day. One play, despite it being a turnover, is not anything to throw him under the bus over, or even really complain about.

The commentator said that play was a run play and when Brees bobbled the snap he tried to improvise and Meachem wasn’t ready. If it was a pass play, it was a horrible pass…

I think Brees is playing just fine and is comfortable

he’s completing at such a high percentage- he can’t be doing all that bad- we totally dominated on both sides of the ball. If Meachem catches that ball that was the first INT, we would be talking like it was almost a perfect game probably. I thought that error on the INT was Meachem’s fault. Lance would have caught it. These guys are pros and they should catch ANY ball that hits their hands. They practice that ALL week. All offseason. The timing was off- clearly, because Brees dropped at and picked it up. But still, they have to catch that.

I think you are being too tough on Bushrod- He did have 2 false starts, not 3. But, cmon he is playing the toughest OL position and usually plays the best pass rusher and he gets helped by a different RB every other play so it’s a little different than whe he was working with PT and Reggie and our screens would be a big help then too.

I'm not saying he has happy feet

What I am saying is at four times, he didn’t set his feet and under threw a pass. I was commenting on it to my daughter as the game was going on. And it was always when he had to hold the ball too long, because of coverage. I was only able to notice it while watching live at field level.

Once Reggie gets back Drew will be fine....

Right now the lack of a credible threat of a RB catching the ball. and doing something is killing the Saints. Teams are keeping 2 safeties over the top and dropping LB’s to take away the seam (Brees favorte routes)… Without Reggie or PT teams don’t respect Betts out the backfield. Most team move Safeties to cover Bush… That will open things up for Meachum and Devery…
