Hello everyone! With Dave's blessing I'm going to do a new post on Mondays to help wrap-up the previous weekend. This post will have links to other SBNation blogs featuring their wrap up pieces. The purpose is to help us stay in tune with what is happening around the NFL so that we can know what is going on. I will also include the updated standings for your convenient pleasure. So make the jump to find out the results of this past week's slate of games.
49ers 7 @ San Diego 34
Quick Summary: Geez this one was the definition of blowout. The Chargers came out dominant, and the 49ers never seemed to be in the same world as the Chargers. Vincent Jackson had 5 grabs for 112 yards and 3 TDs, Phillip Rivers was 19 of 25 and 273 yards and 3 TDs. That is about the only thing interesting coming away from this game.
Detroit 23 @ Tampa Bay 20-OT
Quick Summary: Detroit took control of the game early, but let the Bucs come back to take the lead by the end of the first half. Detroit came back in the 2nd half to lead 17-10. But soon the Bucs led 20-17 with 1:39 left. Drew Stanton led the Lions 58 yards for the 28 yard kick to tie the game. In OT, the Lions won and went down the field to kick the winning 34 yard FG.
Arizona 12 @ Carolina 19
Quick Summary: The Panthers got up to a 6-0 lead over the Cardinals. Then, an INT of Skelton by Sherrod Martin led to a TD pass by Clausen to Jeff King to put the Panthers up 13-0. The Cardinals could not get an offensive TD, the only TD was a fumble recovery in the endzone by Steve Breaston. The 2 point conversion was failed. The Cards went for the FG with :54 left and did not recover the onside kick to lose their 10th of the season as the Panthers win their 2nd game of the season.
Kansas City 27 @ St. Louis 13
Quick Summary: The Rams got out to a quick 6-0 lead, but then the Chiefs got their game into gear. The Chiefs then scored 20 straight unanswered points, before the Rams ran it in behind Steven Jackson with 4:04 left to make it 20-13. However, Jamaal Charles ran it 80 yards for a TD to seal the deal for the Chiefs.
Philadelphia 38 @ New York 31
Quick Summary: The only fanbase more upset than us after yesterday's games. The Giants dominated the Eagles in the first half after leading 24-3 to head into halftime. The Eagles came out and scored a 3rd quarter TD to be down by 14, only to be outdone as the Giants would score again with 8:17 left in the game to make it 31-10. Then, it happened. Vick became the football god some had been deeming him to be. He then drove his team down the field 3 times in 8 minutes to tie the game, then on a punt return with 10 seconds left, Desean Jackson fumbled the punt, scooped it up, and ran it 65 yards for the game winning TD. Someone is going to be fired in New York.
Jacksonville 24 @ Indianapolis 34
Quick Summary: Manning was back to par, as he led the Colts to two scores in the first half to the Jags FG and a questionable punt return for a TD. The score was 14-10 at halftime. After halftime, Donald Brown found a 41 yard seam for a TD run to make it 21-10. The Jags then had a couple of turnovers which Indy turned into FGs to make the score 27-17. After a David Garrard 1 yard pass to Mike Sims-Walker helped the Jags by making the score 27-24, the onside kick failed as Tyjuan Hagler ran 41 yards to seal the victory with a TD off the onside recovery.
New Orleans 24 @ Baltimore 30
Quick Summary: Don't make me relive this one please.
Washington 30 @ Dallas 33
Quick Summary: The first half can be summarized as Dallas riding high, Grossman lousy, what is Shanahan thinking? The second half was completely different. Rex Grossman, I repeat, Rex Grossman then led his Redskins to the endzone 3 times as the Skins tied up with Dallas 30-30 as Dallas' D completely forgot that there was another half of football to play. However, back to back sacks by Dallas gave them the ball at their own 48 yard line to get to the 21 to kick the game winning FG with under a minute to play.
Texans 17 @ Titans 31
Quick Summary: The score made this game look closer than what it really was. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 21-0. At halftime, the Texans had managed a FG to still be in a 21 point hole as the score was 24-3. There was a fight in this one today, but to sum up the Texan's season it was between DE Antonio Smith and LB Brian Cushing both of the same team. As well, a horrendous defensive play that has plagued the Texans all season was seen as the safety Troy Nolan, tipped the ball away from Glover Quin who was attempting to intercept the ball. He however, tipped the ball away from the corner and into the arms of Kenny Brit who went down at the 3 yard line. The only one happy to see this one were Titans fans.
Cleveland 17 @ Cincinnati 19
Quick Summary: The Bengals got back to their 2009 ways as they ran the ball with authority and dominated the TOP battle, holding the ball for 37:38. Cedric Benson dominated the ground with 31 rushes for 150 yards and a TD. Carson Palmer went 14 for 23 and 209 yards to help the Bengals get their first win in 84 days!! That should help their fanbase stay away from sharp objects during the week. The good news for the Browns was Colt McCoy. Their rookie QB looked good in their loss as hope for them in the future when they can get more personnel to help develop their team further.
Bills 17 @ Miami 14
Quick Summary: The Bills got a much needed divisional win against the Dolphins who have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. Fitzpatrick threw 2 TDs against the Dolphins one of them going to Stevie Johnson (I guess God loves him again?), and threw for 16 for 23 and an INT. Miami had little success offensively as Henne was rendered next to useless by the Bills defense (!!!). The Dolphins kicker went 0 for 4 as well, missing 48,48,53, and 61 yards, any of which would have led to a tie and two of which would have led to a win. As well an intresting note from the AP write up.
Notes: Fitzpatrick threw a touchdown pass for his 15th consecutive game, the longest such streak by a Bills quarterback since 1987
Moral of the story, be happy we have Brees.
Atlanta 34 @ Seattle 18
Quick Summary: *grumble grumble* Atlanta rolled here, score seems close but in reality this was only close before the game started. Matt Ryan threw for 3 TD and 1 INT. While Tony Gonzales got 2 receptions to make this his 12th season in a row with 60 receptions setting another record. Turner ran for 82 yards as the Falcons mainly aired it out in this game. Meanwhile on the other side, Hasselbeck had a horrible game and ended up becoming replaced mid-game by Charlie Whitehurst only for him to be marginally better. It may be time for Seattle to enter the QB race. Sadly this team is in contention for the #4 seed and will not be better than 8-8, while one team may be going to the playoffs at 8-8, 7-9 or even sadder, 6-8-1.
Jets 22 @ Steelers 17
Quick Summary: How about this for a shocker? The Jets actually had some offense and took the victory today. The Jets opened with a kickoff return for a TD to open 7-0. The Steelers would eventually take a lead with a Mendenhall 2 yard run to take the lead at 17-10. Then, after driving down the field, the Jets faced a 4th and 1 from the Steelers 7 yard line, the Jets would run a naked bootleg and fool the Steelers (and the camera man) and would let Sanchez run into the endzone unopposed to tie it up. As time went by, the Jets would get a FG to take the lead by 3. The Steelers would get the ball deep in their endzone, only for the Jets to take down Mewelde Moore in the endzone for a safety. The Steelers got the ball back, and Big Ben tried to drive the Steelers down field for their winning score, but the Steelers came up 10 yards short to go down.
Broncos 23 @ Oakland 39
Quick Summary: Tim Tebow's first start was a loss as the Broncos could not hang with the Raiders to go down in flames. Going into the 4th quarter, the Raiders had a 23-20 lead, and finished 39-23. Proving either their running game is a force to be reckoned with, or Denver's D really is terrible. Tebow finished 8 for 16 and 136 yards, 1 TD, with 8 rushes for 78 yards and a rushing TD. Jason Campbell had a short pass go for 73 yard TD after Marcell Reece juked David Bruton and led to a footrace to the endzone.
Green Bay 27 @ New England 31
Quick Summary: Well, this game was an actual good game. This was supposed to be a 56-0 shellacking by the Patriots. Yet Matt Flynn looked great...until he had to step up and do something without the coaches help. The Pack opened the game with an onside kick and the Patriots were completely shocked by this. Packers defense harrased Brady most of the night, and forced the Pats to actually participate in all 60 minutes. Then of course, came a certain squib kick where the Pat's RG (!!!) ran 71 yards on the kickoff the put the Pats in a 1st and goal situation. In the 2nd half, both teams kept trying to either keep or take the lead but nothing really changed by the end of the 3rd quarter. Then, in the 4th quarter, Brady's expertise and Flynn's inexperience and lack of preparedness showed. Brady finally led his team to take the lead and keep it, and Flynn had no idea what to do on 4th and 1 with 30 seconds and the team looking at him. This was a good game, even though it was supposed to be a blowout.
