Ask The Falcoholic, Part Two: The Askening

What a crazy season.

Given the Falcons' position at the top of the NFC South and the way the Saints are daintily nipping on their heels, I figured you might have some burning questions. Stop, drop, roll and ask me whatever you want to know about Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White or John Abraham, who has shown an enjoyment for studying quarterbacks at the molecular level.

And hey, you may even have questions about this Monday night game. I hear it's a big one.

As always, recommend this post and keep it up near the top of the list, if you please. Also, one abusive statement per customer. Thank you.

After our horrendous run defense yesterday

As I still recover from the hangover yesterday. Saints D need to buckle up if they have any shot at stopping Michael turner. Ryan doesn’t make many mistakes. Bottom line is: Saints can’t make careless mistakes against the mistakeless Falcons.

Why do the Falcons insist on doing everything we do?

We win a Super Bowl and now you guys figure you have to do the same. Isn’t it enough just to admire our shiny trophy? Why must you have one too? :)

He'll probably only run for 100

Stack the box against him and let Ryan throw for 300. That’ll solve your problem.

Do you worry at all about the way your team is playing?

What I mean by that is…they don’t overpower people. Games are usually always close and they seem to win the majority of their games by simply waiting for the other team to make a mistake first. That’s held up very well so far, but does it worry you when you get to the playoffs when teams historically up the ante that your team hasn’t shown true killer instinct yet?

Also on a more humorous note….have any of you Falcon fans considered starting a petition to have Matt Ryan change his nick name? You can’t go around calling a grown man “Matty Ice” with a straight face forever.

"Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not 'every man for himself.' And the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked 'em up."

by jeff.l.b on Dec 20, 2010 2:49 PM CST reply actions

I'm not worried

It’s a conscious decision by the coaching staff to play a much more conservative game with a lead, and it ends up hurting the final point differential. We can’t and shouldn’t be doing that against good teams, but I don’t think we’re full of mercy for say, the Saints.

That said, there will come a time when the Falcons play their conservative game and come out of the gate sluggish and it ends up really hurting them. I just hope it’s not in the post-season.

I call him Matty Snowballs.

Answer honestly: do you think the Falcons will win the Super Bowl?

No hedging, no analysis, just your gut: is this your year? Do you get a warm glow of certainty in your chest every time you think about it…or do you start to get the shakes and wonder if 1998 was your high-water mark?

It was worth the wait.

by MtnExile on Dec 20, 2010 3:03 PM CST reply actions

Gut feeling?

They don’t win it this year. I am going to be drawn and quartered on my own blog once they get wind of it.

They’re good enough to win and stranger things have happened, but it won’t be 2010. I’ve long thought 2011 or 2012 would be their year, with one or two more high quality drafts under their collective belts.

Most of us thought the same about our Saints last year

It was like it was too good to possibly come true. I wouldn’t allow myself to truly get my hopes up until Tracy Porter picked off Peyton Manning and scored. Then, I finally felt it was safe enough to think this was finally our year.

The Falcons have just as good a shot as anybody this season. If you lock up the first seed (please, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!), you’ll have a very good shot at it. You’ve got to grab it this year while you’re in prime pouncing position. If there’s football next year, we aren’t simply gonna allow you to win the division again.

I have to agree....

Rivarly aside…the falcons must take advantage this year 2011 they may get the injury bug…2012 they may not be able to find that magic you never know….only 2 teams are good every year…Colts and Pats the rest of us…..have to pray and hope…

by blackandgoldbuddha on Dec 20, 2010 3:21 PM CST up reply actions

only 2 teams are good every year…Colts and Pats

Are you so sure about that? Colts don’t look so great this year. And Pats looked pretty sad last year.

I’d say there are about six teams that look good more often than not. Pats, Colts, Steelers, Chargers (except for the postseason), Eagles, Giants (maybe). Debatable that the Ravens and Packers might be possible to include, but both are “not quite” in my book.

Saints and Falcons are trying to get there, but don’t have enough history of greatness to be included yet. And I hope the Falcons never do.

by FriarBob on Dec 22, 2010 12:15 AM CST up reply actions

I don't know about that

My feeling last year during our SB run was “This is our year. While we may not win it all, if we can’t do it this year, we’ll never do it.”
I don’t think the falcons are in that position. I agree with Dave Choate. They have exceeded expectations this year, but I think they are about a year or two away from winning it all.

What makes you guys so good?..what I mean is...

I have watched your offense and it seems no one can stop Roddy and Matt. If Matt take a 3 step or 5 step drop the ball always is out and on time even if the defense knows its coming….also it seems the falcons never make a single damn mistake, I sit, i watch, I wait but it never happens!…is it just discipline of the conservative philosophy of your team?

Also I have been over on your site a few times and its seems falcon fans hate the saints so much. I am a life long saints fan but I never really grew the hate the falcons.

I dont know maybe it was because I liked the quaterback who cannot be named that plays for philly now , but is there a spike in the saints hate because the saints are SB champs?

by blackandgoldbuddha on Dec 20, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions

Roddy has been stopped a lot lately.

I know because I had him on two of my fantasy teams and now those two teams are out of the fantasy playoffs already. One and done. Of course, I also had Bowe and Hillis on those teams and they also let me down this past weekend.

True,

but he was on fire earlier in the season. I think he may have a nagging injury that’s been slowing him just a little. He’s been on their injury report every week lately. Either that, or teams have really been focusing on him lately and limiting his production.

It's really Ryan's football intelligence

The guy can get rid of the football quickly and makes excellent reads. The Falcons put him in a position to succeed by letting him do no-huddles in some situations and carefully planning in others. He’s not a flashy, risky gunslinger like a Favre or a Cutler, but the team limits its mistakes because of that.

The Saints hate has grown as the site has grown, in equal parts due to the Saints winning it all last year, the nonstop media crush on you guys (not really your fault) and the fact that the Falcons are putting some money where our mouths are. That’s the best explanation I’ve got.

Ryan's offseason study has really paid off.

I remember reading that he spent lots of time studying the play of Brees and other QBs. He’s been noticeably better this year. Whatever he did, it worked. It also helps that he, Turner, and White have been able to stay healthy. Injuries kinda destroyed their chances in ’09.

Saints media crush? What media outlets have you been paying attention to? As Troy Aikman said during our Thanksgiving game, “I can’t remember a time when a defending Super Bowl champion has been talked about less.” Most everyone in the national media jumped off our bandwagon after we lost to the Cards. Ugh, that was embarrassing.

I respect La Confora's opinion about as much as I respect John Clayton's

On a scale from one to ten – 0. Clayton has been high on you guys all season. He ranked us at 9th to start the season. The Falcons have the better record, they beat us earlier in the year, and thus deserve to be ranked higher in anyone’s totally meaningless rankings.

Just watched the Highlights of Falcons/Seahawks game

Noticing Hasselback was forcing throws downfield and turned into interceptions. This what I’m hoping Drew won’t do on Mon night. We need to run the ball more than 14 times, enough said.

Matt Ryan is not your typical Flashy 300 plus passing QB like Drew Brees. But he’s very disciplined and makes very few mistakes.

Saints are a gambling flashy offense. It works extremely well when we don’t turn the ball over.

Falcons offense, I would describe as a military offense. Run the ball hard, and only pass when needed. If other teams can’t stop the run. Falcons will keep running it down other teams throats without stopping.

3 keys to the game on Monday for the Saints. Run the ball more with balance. Stop the run. And most importantly, “Do Not Turn the Ball Over”

Dear Dave (Choke),

The falcons will not win the Superbowl because it’s mine, dammit.

MINE, MINE, MINE, MINE, MINE, MINE, MINE AND, DAMMIT, YOU CAN’T HAVE IT!

Oh sure, you can go ahead and win out the remainter of the season/post-season but that won’t change a thing. Next year is a lock out year and that inicludes Superbow Rings! NFL security will be circling Tiffany’s with tasers and (surviving) pit bulls. Benson will be paying them for their time and Rita will be serving them chicory coffee and beignets.

The closest thing you will come to a ring ceremony will be cleaning that ugly smudge around your bath tube. You want a Lombardi? Well, this is as close as you’re going to come -

Lombardi / Zamboni, hell you guys wouldn’t know the difference anyway! Why? Because you haven’t suffered enough.

We have a terrible hurricane and you counter with . . . a drought? What? You mean you had to water your freakin’ pitunias with Perrier for weeks????

We have a major oil slick and you bastards cry because you spilled EVOO (thank you Rachael Ray) while serving arugula?

C’mon, Dave, it’s time to man up and SUFFER. Then, maybe then, God will look down on your team and say, “Ok, these dudes have earned it. I’ll give them a Superbowl. Oh yeah, and I’ll give them a windy, oil smudged football blog worthy of reading.”

Merry Christmas and the Very Best of the coming New Year to you and yours.

Do the Falcons have an equivalent of the Saints' black pants?

Just some article of clothing that they can’t play good football in?

Also, I know you don’t live in Atlanta, but I’d just like to say that the giant New Year’s Eve peach is stupid.

Okay, I have to ask...

How do other SB Nation blogs compare to us in terms of intelligent humor and being just plain funny? I just can’t see any other sports blog as funny as this one! Where else can you go from Matty Snowballs to the military, to Sponge Bob, to New hampshire and actually learn history, NFL defense, and geography and all the while laughing! I love it!

You guys seem to be chumming it up.................

with this “Dave Choke” guy. The best chum I could reccommend is fish bait ,so is this an attempt to bait this man as a friend and then stand on his head after we beat his football team Monday nite on National TV? This will be their Super Bowl and defeated will be written in the Tuesday morning papers across the land. Doubts will reign supreme on every game show across this great country and our Saints will again be the measuring stick by which all other teams compare. Good luck, good nite, and wish you well.

If there’s going to be an NFC South Super Bowl of sorts, it’ll be in the playoffs. And what a hell of a game that would be.

Really...I mean Really?

Dave, I know you have conversations that don’t take place with Roddy White often (just look above). Can you ask him what he was thinking with the ’Aints reference, no matter how much Dilfer poked him? I mean really, we might give lots of back and forth crap, but I am pretty sure the Saints respect the Falcons for the accomplishment, especially given our own sordid past.

It's not about humor vs. humorless.

It’s more revealing of Roddy and Falcons fans that they need resort to names like the one you used here that attempt to delegitimize an achievement of their rival that they have yet to accomplish.

But, hey, if you’re having fun pointing that out inadvertently, have fun.

Why the insecurity?

I don’t understand. You guys just won the Super Bowl last year. Instead of shrugging off an Aints comment, players and fans alike scramble to talk about how you’re being disrespected and it’s like your accomplishments don’t even matter and why doesn’t anyone love me?!

No one can take the Super Bowl away from you. You’ve got a shot at another one. Offhand Twitter comments from a Falcons wide receiver should be the last thing sending everyone into a tizzy.

The whole situation drives me crazy

Your best bet is to check out the post I just put up over at The Falcoholic. Long story short, I don’t blame White for getting riled up about Dilfer’s comments or the Saints for getting riled up about Roddy’s comments, but the way both sides chose to do it makes me want to grind my teeth into dust.

You know what gets me sturred up............................

The misconception that Katrina and the BP incident had anything to do with Our Super Bowl win. Everyone agrees that it is very hard to reach the pennical and no outside influence can make you achieve that. It takes a lot of dedication, focus, Talent and luck to get there and we had it all last year. Then you have idiots that make claims of devine intervention that ALLOWED us to come out on top. From where I sit………….it took devine intervention for Mr. White to do anything successfully based on his ignorant comments and the battered english translation he used to make such a stupid comment. By the way…….How many Super Bowls has Mr. White played in and how many has Atlanta won………………….“0”. Tell Mr.White, We bees the Champs till we aint no mo……………..We da Champs…..Y’all da Chumps win or lose Monday.

oops, sorry there- misfire... Dave, would you say this is Matt Ryan's biggest game so far in his career?

I am asking because I haven’t really followed his career. I think he’s played in 1 playoff game if I am correct. Are there any other games that stick out to you as being kind of “larger” than just regular season games where there is a little more on the line and maybe nationally televised like this one?

I would say the two Chicago Bear games that the Falcons have played define his legacy

But obviously any game against the Saints has that playoff atmosphere.

now that the game is over, what are your takes on the game. do you think the falcons should have gone for it on 4th down. I know that in the first game, the falcons gambled on 4th twice in one drive and got the first. also, do you think that since turner was getting stuffed all night up the middle, might it had been better to try a fade or quick slant to tony gonzalez instead of giving it to turner? does this mean that the falcon staff doesn’t have as much faith in matt ryan as they do in turner?

by Saintsfan75 on Dec 28, 2010 4:32 AM CST up reply actions

I think the mistake all night was being too conservative

Turner was worse than useless, so the Falcons should’ve been giving it to Jason Snelling, mixing in more pass plays and trying something creative.

They have a ton of faith in Ryan, but they didn’t put him in the best position to succeed last night.

by Dave Choate on Dec 28, 2010 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

no they didn’t I did see some check passes to snelling as ryan was flushed out of the pocket, but except for one run, turner was shut down last night. with the eagles loosing, the Saints can still get the #1 seed when they win next week and the falcons lose

by Saintsfan75 on Dec 29, 2010 12:54 AM CST up reply actions

I think the Falcons are playing to get playoff experience this year and then cut Ryan loose next year

in a real Super Bowl push. Having said that, I don’t think Mike Smith will back off if Atlanta gets deep into the playoffs, but I don’t feel like they are ready to let him try to carry them team yet like Drew does or Peyton or Brady (or Vick, Rivers, Rothlesberger, etc)

I think ultimately for Atlanta to win a SB this year or next, there has to be more of a willingness to put at least certain scoring drives more on the QB shoulders. Mike Turner is very good but he won’t carry you to the SB either. Matty Ice must.
