New Orleans Saints 17 @ Atlanta Falcons 14: Who Dat Say !?

Whodat12-7_medium

Woo-Hoo!!  They did it.  It took all four quarters and all of my staying power, but the Saints prevailed in a tough, low-scoring affair that harkened back to the Jim Mora days of BIG D and lots of punts.

Speaking of which, how 'bout that DEFENSE?  In a game in which the offense sputtered for much of the night, the defense continued to answer the call and kept the game close, shutting down Atlanta playmakers right and left, hardly giving up any ground.

We're in the playoffs now, and we'll have to see where we end up after the Week 17 games (#1 seed and at home [it's possible] or traveling to Seattle or St. Louis).

Make the jump to begin poring over all the reports, statistics, quotes, and highlights from the game.

Post-Game Quotes

from Jay Adams - atlantafalcons.com

Safety Darren Sharper
"That was a good performance by our defense. We know who they want to get the ball to and the main thing was that we stopped their running attack and didn't allow Turner to get going. And once we did that it made our jobs a lot easier. It forced them to start throwing the ball."

On the two interceptions by Drew Brees:
"The best thing that he did was make the tackle on the second one (Abraham). If he doesn't make that tackle it was going to be tough on us to come back. He's a fighter and everyone knows that. Drew is the MVP."

LB Scott Shanle
On the making the playoffs:

"It feels great. It's the first step in trying to repeat and defend our championship is to get into the tournament. "

On slowing down Turner and Gonzalez:
"They have talented players. Obviously those guys have been a key part of what they've done this year. I think we would be crazy to not try and make someone else beat us. That's kind of what we did tonight."

OT Jon Stinchcomb
On Brees overcoming the two interceptions

"He doesn't let one bad play affect his game. You see him move forward and put that last play behind him. I'm sure that no one is a harsher critic on him than himself. For him to be able to rebound and lead this team is a testament to his toughness."

On making the playoffs
"We are in. It's all about trying to continue to play good football. "

Head coach Sean Payton
"It was a hard fought game. The reason why it is tough to play in the [Georgia] Dome is because this is a really good football team. The momentum of the game went back and forth, but we were fortunate enough to overcome the turnovers and make enough points to win the game. This is a significant win, and it was great to get this win on the road."

What is Drew Brees Worth?

I read somewhere in all the post-game info

that Saints defenders were gathering for pictures as individual units near the Falcons mid-field crest.

Does this strike anyone else as conduct unbecoming of the defending Super Bowl Champs?

I think, at worst, it may come off as a slap in the face to the Falcons and/or fans (although I wouldn’t feel disrespected if the roles were reversed), and at best, we shouldn’t have lowered ourselves to doing that – THIS WASN’T OUR SUPER BOWL – we’ve still got lots of work to do, and while this was a big win, it didn’t merit such behavior.

But maybe I’m just tired and cranky this morning – grab a second cup of coffee, Hans, and move on…

It's gonna be a great year.

I read somewhere that the Saints take a pic in the middle of the field

whenever they gain an important victory. They don’t mean it as a slap to the face

It was an embarassment. I read and heard about it, not to mention the carousing you could hear in the background during Payton's presser.

We’ve been here before…act like it. Quit acting like a bunch of kids.

News flash:

It is a GAME, kids at heart.

They were happy, and PROUD, and there is no shame in being so. Doing that kind of junk DURING the game would be bad form, but after, I can’t understand why ANYONE is making these comments – good for them, let them celebrate, it was a big win against a tough opponent.

You need to lighten up, Francis.

The name's Jeff, not Francis.

And it’s not a child’s game when you’re getting paid millions of dollars to be a professional. When you’re being paid to be a professional, you act like it. You keep that kind of stuff indoors between teammates, not out for everyone to see.

Agreed

I find that there’s usually a generational/cultural gap that separates the two views on this. I’m with it’s a game, no biggy crowd. NFL is already uptight as it is!

I don't care

if the defense went out there with cans of spray paint and painted a fleur-de-lis over the Falcon logo. They did what they went out there to do and have the right to celebrate any way they want. I applaud them and hope they can back it up when we play again there, but if not, they will have to live with that too.

I don’t see anything wrong with it – it complements the Falcons. They were that proud of their win over the Falcons that they wanted to capture it on a polaroid. Maybe it will be used as motivation to come back to the same place during the playoffs since we all know the Falcons will get the #1 seed.

I was at the game

The Georgia Dome isn’t that loud of a stadium. I wouldn’t mind playing there again in the playoffs.

by AJG on Dec 28, 2010 9:19 AM CST reply actions

prob shouldn't have done that after the game

also- i think one of the reasons we won was who we activated and didn’t activate. I loved that PRob and JDunbar played. A little surprised that Dunbar started and that Danny Clark who was listed as probable but was deactivated. I like Clark, but I think I like Dunbar better. Also, a little surprised U Young deactivated and Ramon Humber played, but I guess we needed the depth at LB. Also, anyone notice Torey Humphrey got some downs in there. But, I hope Dtomas comes back soon.

I don't get it either...

Let them do whatever they want. Entertainers are subject to so much judgment as it is. We come here day after day, scheming, dreaming, analyzing, predicting and judging—yup I said it, judging! Some of us come hear with mallets and a bible, administering (and projecting) morale and our view of reality upon the players. “This player should be doing this…” “This player was out all night doing that…” Who cares, judge their play and leave anything else to the birds…
