Tay, I gotta weigh in on this

Aside from the comments about the flip passes (which I obviously agree with), I don’t think he’s criticizing Brees at all. As he says in the article, what’s not to like about Brees? I’m a Falcons fan and I respect the hell out of the guy.

This is about the media complex around Brees. He threw two picks and was far too aggressive with those little flip passes, but you’d never know that by listening to the announcers and the pundits the next day. Eventually, it builds a little cult of personality around Brees, and in the same way we all like to make fun of Favre because of that, Brees will start getting a public backlash.

Believe it or not, I cringe every time Matt Ryan makes a bad throw and the announcers excuse it. Guys make mistakes. We should be able to point them out.

At the same time....

People turning on Favre at the end had absolutely nothing to do with his on field ability and what he was doing. Nobody in their right mind would claim he had a bad year last year. The love fall out for Favre had to do with his off the field behavior and, whether you agree with it or not, holding various teams hostage with his will I or won’t I retire routine.

People make excuses for Favre, Brady, Marino, Brees, and Favre not because they made mistakes that they chose to over look. It was because win or lose, interceptions, or Touchdown passes, at the end of the game you KNEW that those people left everything on the field. That they never, ever, left a throw on the field because they were afraid to make the play. They played and play with heart and determination that cannot be questioned. That’s why we excuse they occasional bonehead call.

"Aristotle was not Belgian. The central message of Buddhism is not 'every man for himself.' And the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked 'em up."

I don't know man...

I know a lot of Favre haters that didn’t care for him period! But I’m biased, I’m orig from WI and kinda root for him on the low. But you’re right homie, how they play is what I respect the most.

I respect where you're coming from

But I think ultimately we’re talking about different things. I strongly dislike the way the media deifies these quarterbacks. I don’t care if Brett Favre is playing like a big kid out there, because he’s thrown 336 interceptions in his career, a lot of them by forcing stupid throws. That hurts his team, and even if he’s “giving it his all” and all that, those are mistakes. The fact that analyst like Jon Gruden are tripping all over themselves to excuse him makes me hate the guy, whether or not he deserves it.

Brees is a different story. This is the only game I’ve seen him play where I felt like he made some really boneheaded, overly aggressive mistakes. He’s a quality dude.

I will say...

Complexes exist…but this complex with Brees has been earned and he can easily lose the love of people. People are so fickle, let him cheat on his wife with Sarah Palin or some crap…he’ll quickly lose favor! LOL, You’re right about cult of personality and I see where you’re coming from, still throwing two picks and yet still winning the game, that’s what winners do. Jordan had many a games (I’m a Jordan fanatic if you can’t tell) where he was shooting horribly but he closed it out and won the game. I think people have a negative complex with some players and will until that player does something spectacular, then fans come abound, it’s the nature of freakin humans (I hate them)! But you make some good points and I must say even though you’re a Falcon’s dude, you got class. biggups my man!

He's so darn likeable

I hate that!

;)

I get the cringing at hero worship. I get the cringing at not accurately calling bad plays or glossing over them because it’s a guy who has proved himself.

But, every one of the quarterbacks who does get this treatment has done something to earn it. Even Brett, as well as my favorite overpraised QB to hate: Peyton Manning. And I don’t really hate Peyton Manning a bit, it’s the brain dead, effusive prattling that goes with watching a game he plays that I hate.

I will say...

That some people overly focus on mistakes! Whenever I’m able to jump onto the game thread, I hear what sounds like 12-year-old kids trying to sound smart. Overanalyzing every play, way too disappointed with the fact that no one is perfect. Announcers rarely bother me, even the ones that may say something “negative” (or objective?) about someone I like. I hear people hear hating on Aikman or whoever just because they’d say something constructive about the Saints. I find very few fans are mature enough to learn to just enjoy the game and not get so bent out of shape because someone makes a mistake, an announcer says something that they don’t like.

upon reflection

I’m a mature person upon reflection. ;)

During the game, in the moment, I’m the person talking to the TV. Calling them everything under the sun, demanding that they shut up, etc. It’s silly. Probably as brain dead as they. But, I’m not being paid as a professional, either.

It is part of the game and it doesn’t stop me from watching. It does contribute to misdirected resentment about some of the these players, though. That’s the only part of this article that I could find myself in agreement.

One thing to remember

It’s the media itself that was responsible for all the hyperbole surrounding Favre, and now for all the hyperbole surrounding Drew. They love to set up the problem, and then pronounce that “we” or “America” is going way overboard with this nonsense. That’s just what the media does best: create controversy and then milk it for everything it’s worth.

And that’s what’s bothering me most about blogging these days, Tay. Not that they’re trying to pass their stuff off as journalism, but that they’re simply recapitulating all the mistakes journalism has made in my lifetime. They’re becoming a redundant source not of information, but of self-serving crap and outright lies.

But before I read that piece, I thought “the new Brett Favre” was referring simply to Drew’s play and not the media’s new script…to be specific, to his recent penchant for dumb interceptions. And I had to reluctantly, kinda, agree. While hoping it’s just a phase. Please, Drew, let it be just a phase.

It was worth the wait.

Yeah, I hear ya MT

When I was in school, all my teachers hated the whole blog thing when it started to take off, like in 2004. I thought it was cool and innovative and gave people who didn’t get the gigs, the opportunity to do their thang. Now, even though I have my own blog, I can totally see the problem with it. Even the so called “journalist” are more blog like than anything. Go over to yahoo’s sports pieces and you will see straight crap. I’m reading crap by MGD that warrants his firing in my opinion. So I hear that. I’m coming to realize the media is evil. The media is the macrocosmic version of the gossips and etc., in high school. The popular people are just all the celebs (sports, film and whoever else).

…because, seriously, could ANYONE ever imagine Drew Brees texting a picture of is schlong to some bimbo???

Look I grew up in a situation where FAR-VUH was a part of the scenery – LITERALLY – and the dude is NOT what the media has fed you. He’s a first-rate jackass of a human being. A self-centered, self-serving, douchebag. Lots of physical talent to be sure, but one arrogant jackass of a putz. I hated his sorry @$$ long before he was BRET FREAKIN’ FARVE!!! My dislike of him goes back to his HIGH SCHOOL days, I pegged him for a pro, but also for a guy that would be a huge jerk, because he already WAS a huge jerk before he was famous.

I’ve heard much the same story through the grapevine. I’ve also heard that Peyton Manning was a pompous pr*** at Newman. The difference there being that Peyton was annointed a superstar before he ever set foot on an NFL field. Favre earned his reputation in Green Bay. That’s the biggest difference between the two, at least in my mind.

To Peyton’s credit, the guy has sense of humor. Favre and Brees both seem like sticks in the mud personality wise, by comparison.

And see it's people that think this way...

That become bloggers and journalist. When you say high school, did you know him? I rarely let myself TOTALLY dislike anybody. I hate certain things about people in the media but it’s always more of a “because of the way they come off”. You may know Favre personally but most people don’t and have that same passion, without the knowledge that you have. Other than what he’s done with this chick, we really don’t have much intel that warrants us hating him personally—at least not rationally.

This is going to sound like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, but I have a friend who has a kid with a chick who was best friends with a chick that supposedly got knocked up by Favre in HS. She claims that Favre pressured her into having an abortion. And she did. Trouble is, I have a couple of other friends who did the exact same thing at his age. So, it would be fairly hypocritical of me to hold that against him, while remaining friends with these other guys. On top of which, I don’t know for a fact that it’s even true. Just saying, it’s kind of silly to dwell on stuff like that regarding a public figure, when you know damn well it wouldn’t matter that much, if you found out tomorrow that your best friend had similiar skeletons in his closet.

I totally agree

Shoot, I’d like to think I’m generally a nice guy, however, I can admit there’s people out there that can say I’m a jerk and they wouldn’t be lying as far as how I’ve treated them, doesn’t mean I’m a jerk now or totally a jerk all the time…people grow, people make mistakes and etc., I think we are very hard on celebs and their demons. Look at all the issues in sports that we judge people by. They’re on center stage and sure that’s their decision, but it doesn’t mean we should be judging and projecting all these ideas and negative characteristics upon them. I’m glad my life isn’t out there to be viewed and judged, merely because I play basketball professionally…Back in the day, that stuff was kept underwraps, prime example is Michael Jordan. He’s done a lot of the things Kobe has but you really didn’t hear about it much while he was playing, just mere hearsay.

The writer also gets lost.

Really caught up in his own setup. As if the media created whatever drove Favre to be the guy who didn’t know when to exit. Oh they enabled, and abetted, but at the core is Favre himself.

How that relates to Drew or the media creating a Drew Brees Monster is where this article gets silly.

Though I agree with Dave Choate, it’s not an attack on Drew, and it only has minimum value as it relates to the resentment the media will create towards Drew no matter how much Drew contributes to that resentment personally.

My response

I distinctly remember the announcers saying how stupid that second pass was and to just take a sack so I am not sure why this article says it didn’t happen. Probably because its the entire basis of the article. Pretty sure 99% of people watching said the same thing.

Second pass? Do you mean the second flip pass? If you’re talking about his second INT, I can’t really fault him too much for that one. Just a great play by Abraham, imo. But yeah, the first one was just careless ad-libbing on Brees’s part. Reminded me of John Fourcade at his best.
