Why the hell is Garrett Hartley still kicking off?
That's all...just that. But while I'm at it, I'd also like to ask:
Why in the name of all that's holy is Garrett Hartley STILL kicking off?!?
Hartley kicked off seven times. He had no touchbacks. He had one fielded on the 17, another on the 36, and another go out of bounds. (That last one might have been a blessing in disguise, because only twice did the coverage teams stop the Bengals short of the 40.)
I realize that the Saints' kick coverage sucked the dead today, and not much of it was Hartley's fault. But I can't help believing two things: one, that Morstead could have gotten touchbacks; and two, that when things are going bad, you make the obvious adjustments first!
So...does anyone have an answer? Something I don't know? (And no, you can't compare their stats on NFL.com, because Morstead is a punter, see? So they don't have kicking stats...even though he also kicks off. Sometimes. Just not now. Why?)

According to Coach Payton
It was because Hartley had better directionality with his kicks, even though his length wasn’t as good (twss). I don’t remember exactly when he said, but I think It was in one of the press conferences earlier this year.
I agree with you, though. Morstead should be kicking off. The advantage of consistent touchbacks when your kick coverage isn’t spectacular is obvious.

Here's your definitive answer

Think they wanted him to concentrate on punts. @super2510: do you know why Moorestead hasn’t been kicking off like he did last year?
The best things in life are free
But you can keep 'em for the birds and bees
That doesn't answer anything
WHY do they want him to concentrate on punts? He’s a very good punter. He was a very good punter last year, when he also kicked off. And he’s better at kicking off than Hartley.
It was worth the wait.
Oh he just thought of something

Trying to protect TM’s shoulder. @KidKreole: Do you know why Hartley is doing kickoffs now instead of Morstead? Stead has a much better boot
The best things in life are free
But you can keep 'em for the birds and bees
What's wrong with Morstead's shoulder?
Do you mean he’s still ailing from preseason?
Let me put it to you this way: either Morstead has a bum shoulder, or Sean Payton is just too stubborn to make the change. Which is more likely?
It was worth the wait.
I remember when it happened
They asked Morstead or Payton how long the shoulder was gonna keep him out, and they said it wouldn’t keep him out long but would linger most of the year. Maybe they just figure just punting morstead is better than risking no morstead. Somebody could always take a cheap shot on him during kickoffs you know.
Two Dat!! Who Dat!?
New Theory
Morestead’s vag is sore. Really. We pay him to kick. Make him kick
Remember when Morstead got dinged up on kickoff coverage in preseason?
I know he’s a big man, but maybe Payton is worried Morstead can’t take a hit. Not that I think Hartley is any better in that department, but right now I’d put Morstead as the more critical asset to the team.

Why not let Morstead do what Hartley does on kickoffs
run down towards the kick returner and if he is having a good return just wave your arms at him as he goes by.

One of the additional reasons if i remember correctly
was that Hartley also had better hang time even though his kicks were shorter. I had heard somewhere, that that was one of the reasons we went with him at the start of the season, as well as protecting our punter’s hurt shoulder. It was allowing our incredibly crappy kick coverage to get further downfield. If you remember the preseason, it was seeming like we were giving up 50 yards a return. Morstead would kick it 6 yards deep, but the coverage was so bad and so far away still, that opponents were just running it out anyway and getting to the 30 +.

Morested is on the mend and
Hartley is auditioning for another job………………Poorly. Although, since the has started taping his toes together and carrying a four leaf clover…………….he aint missed a field goal in the past six or eight attempts. It’s been kind of a trial and error thing.
Surpises are coming so tune in……………………

Hartley is auditioning for another job………………Poorly.
In 3 games since the bye, he’s the #6 fantasy kicker behind Akers, Brown, Kaeding, Bryant and Buehler.
Why don’t you go pick on Shanle, where the stats are a little more fuzzy.
You say you'll change the constitution
Well you know, we all want to change your head
I dont play fantasy................I like the real thing.................Shanle is playing poorly too
The question was………… " Why is Hartley still Kicking off", not………Why are Shanle’s stats so bad. Come on man………………………
My Magnificent Black and Gold Warriors
Hey, man...
The real thing is: Hartley hasn’t missed a kick that affected the outcome of a game since he was benched. One at Tampa (Saints 31, Bucs 6) and one against Seattle (Saints 34, Seahawks 19). He hasn’t missed an extra point attempt all year.
He had the yips and now he doesn’t.
So he is NOT “auditioning for another job………………Poorly.”

Stu, I totally agree with you, But...................
Hartley is not the kickoff specialist. Granted, there was a wind factor in Cinn but his kickoffs were terrible. I’m just saying, if his attempt at kickoffs was a audition for the job…………He failed. Morstead should be doing that and let Hartley concentrate on fiel goals and extra points. He has contributed directly (field goals)to past losses and indirectly (Kickoffs) to near losses. You have to admit he was on thin ice before the break but has responded very well. Another loss by his failure to make a last second fieldgoal could cost him his job in the end.
That is why I said……..“He’s auditioning”.

How often does the field goal kicker not kick off? Some teams have 2 kickers, one for field goals and one for kickoffs. Like, maybe 2 of 32, at most. The punter rarely kicks off.
He’s not auditioning for anything. Hartley owns both jobs.
Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.
We’re gonna need some references:
“How often does the field goal kicker not kick off? Like, maybe 2 of 32, at most.”
I think there are way more than two of non-starting kickers kicking-off.
AND (more importantly)…
Should the best person for the job get the job, if it doesn’t negatively affect his primary function?

Michael Koenen, Rhys Lloyd, and Pat McAfee. 3 is way more than 2……at least if you look at it in a percentage form.

All you Josh McDaniel-esque types out there should probably leave these executive level decisions to Super Bowl winning coaches.

lol… isn’t it part of being a fan, to analyze what we see and try to determine how to make it better.
And, isn’t it possible SP has sand in his who-ha (possibly, just like the PT situation) and is taking a (stupid) calculated risk to “teach him a lesson” or… i have no clue.
Do you think, SP thinks Hartley is the best person for the job get the kick off job??
"You can't be king of the world, if you're a slave to the grind."

Obviously. From what he knows at this time. And as Jeff Duncan said, if I was special teams coach Greg McMahon, I wouldn’t be buying any green bananas.
I said 'Hey man let's hear about God realization, for a change'
Two points:
Hartley sucks at kick offs so I don’t care what they have to do to fix it, it MUST be fixed before the next 4 games. This is f*cking crucial…as we all witnessed first hand on Sunday! We don’t have room to jack with this issue!
Also the kid has enough issues making chip shots so WHY ON EARTH are you going to give him even more responsibility to stress about?
Could it be some strategic move from Payton to teach Hartley something? I have no idea what, maybe there are some things that can be learned from kick offs which can be applied to field goals? Reaching here…

My point exactly. This is an eminently fixable problem—just give the kickoff duties back to Morstead. Okay, that problem is fixed…now on to the next one. And get them ALL fixed before the playoffs bite us in our unprepared butts.
It was worth the wait.
good thing this NFL thing is not run by consensus
You don’t know why Morstead is not kicking off because Payton does not want you to know, because you might tell Mike Smith and Raheem Morris. That’s all you need to know. Don’t make him break your back like he did Kenny Wilkerson’s.

Ha, Kickoffs should be shot up out of the turf
by one of those puntig machines. Solves everybodys problem………………..

maybe if Morstead's got a bum shoulder they want to protect, he could just kick the tar out of the kickoff and then run straight out of bounds to avoid contact
It's gonna be a great year.

Garrett Hartley-K- Saints Dec. 9 – 5:43 pm et Coach Sean Payton insists he never lost confidence in K Garrett Hartley earlier this season. “We see too much and too many things that he’s doing well,” said Payton “He has too much leg talent and he’s produced in big spots for us.” Hartley has made 10 of his last 11 field goals, including five critical kicks against the Cowboys and Bengals.
