Seriously? I mean, I know people marry their teams and the players on it with more devotion than their spouses, but this guy seriously would take Ben over Peyton? And even if Ben were better on his own, which he simply is not even remotely close to being, shouldn't you at least consider the strength of their OLs and the rest of their team around them at least a LITTLE bit?

Put Manning and the best OLs of the last decade on the Steelers and we're wondering if they can be stopped at merely 7 repeat titles. Put Ben with the OLs he's had on the Colts and we're wondering if this team is ever going to make the playoffs.

I think I agree

…but it’s complicated. Manning and Roethlisberger play on teams that are wildly different, so comparing their successes directly is problematic. But if you gave Ben an offensive line as good at protection as the Colts, he would carve up every team he came up against. If you gave Manning the Steelers’ offensive line, he’d spend half the game giving up and falling down.

What’s more, Manning seems to have no imagination whatsoever. He’s reputed to be brilliant, but his offense never changes, and so the reactions of defenses to what his offense does rarely show him anything new. When they do present him with something unexpected, he does things like throwing a pick 6 in the Super Bowl. I seriously wonder if Peyton Manning wouldn’t be an outright bust in Sean Payton’s offense, where the game plan is totally different every week.

Roethlisberger, on the other hand, is improvisational to the nth degree—he thrives on it. He’s like Patton to Manning’s Montgomery, or like Jackson to Manning’s McClellan. Manning is competent when given a superior supporting cast around him; but I doubt seriously he could have taken Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl championship. More likely he would have suffered ten sacks and three interceptions, sulked on the bench, and stalked off the field without shaking hands at the end. And signed three new endorsement deals before the week was out.

Full disclosure: I think Manning is the most overrated player in the history of the NFL. There, I said it.

I will give you that Ben is very good at improv. But so is Drew, so is Tony, and so are a few others. It’s not like that makes him this wonderful QB just because he can improv. Then there IS something to be said for somebody who says “we’re going to execute our offense and you aren’t going to be able to stop us no matter what you do”. They may be proven wrong in spectacular fashion, but hey at least they are confident enough to try. And most of the time, he isn’t proven wrong.

But until very recently, Ben was horrid. His numbers in the first super bowl were a joke, were it not for a well executed trick play, a couple of horrid calls, and a defense outmuscleing a badly over-matched opponent, they would have lost that game. Wish they had. His throwing motion would make Tebow cringe, his accuracy was pathetic, his spirals were non-existent, and were it not for some good WRs catching his ugly ducks of passes anyway he would have probably had a 20% completion rate. OK maybe that’s a slight overstatement, I do hate those bastards, but still. He really wasn’t very good. But because he had a ring he was worshiped. And it flat nauseated me. I hated it.

In the last few years he has gotten a LOT better. I wish he hadn’t. It would make me feel more comfortable that those bastards would finally get their long-overdue comeuppance. But his throwing motion is improved at least some. He actually can throw a spiral most of the time now. Etc. But on the other hand, his health has to start coming into question because he’s had to have had something like 5 concussions. Any more and he may end up a vegetable. Or at least on IR for a season.

But despite his recent improvement, he’s still not better than Manning. He’s just not. His accuracy isn’t better. He doesn’t make his receivers better like Brees or Manning do. His stats aren’t better. His performance in super bowls isn’t better (overall, at least). His injury history isn’t better either. Manning may well be playing for 10 more years, Ben will be lucky if he gets to 5 without MAJOR improvement of his OL. And I’m sure I could come up with other reasons if I had the time.

Does that mean Manning isn’t overrated? Probably not. But does it mean Ben is better? Hell no.

Bear this in mind

When I say overrated, I don’t mean “not good.” Peyton Manning is a great quarterback. But he’s not the greatest of all time, or (in my opinion) even close. That makes him overrated…but that says more about the media and fans than it does about Manning. He is what he is, not what they want him to be. And both quarterbacks are so much products of their systems that it’s hard to compare them. One has the stats, the other has the rings.

Now, Drew Brees could run either system, and without a hiccup. He would be better than Brady on the Patriots, better than Romo on the Cowboys, and he would have taken the Vikings to the Super Bowl.

theyre both perfect for their respective teams

but that article seemed like it was written by a fifth grader for a school project. that being said, i agree with ME and believe that manning is overrated. he won his mvp while drew outperformed him and lead his team to the one seed also. after watching the super bowl, i truly believe that the colts are wasting their time with their coaching staff. ive never seen a more talented team get so thoroughly out coached in such an important game.

IMO these are ther articles I think that should be written

blasphemy to some, but he back it up- gives you something to ponder. And, I am not so sure he is wrong. It’s all about the post season- just like in Donovan Mc nabb not being able to win the big one. I think we will have a better perspective on Manning as a few more years go by. He didn’t start out so great and then when he achieved some success, we all went overboard. he clearly is a HOF QB, but the playoff record is a major glitch. If he finished with a plaoff reord les than .500 and only 1 ring to show… that might make more people pause.

I don't get this comparison

I also don’t get why the MSM spends so much time singling out certain “star” players as if wins and losses totally rest on their shoulders. Football is a team sport. It may be the ultimate team sport. This comparison of Big Ben vs. Manning is ridiculous. Ben didn’t single-handily win those Super Bowls. The Steelers D was largely responsible for that. I think more so than Big Ben. And, Manning can only do so much during a game. He doesn’t play defense, so he couldn’t stop the Saints O from scoring 24 points Sunday. He only could have stopped our D from scoring their 7 points.

This discussion reminds me of why I also don’t get the overtime rules debate. So many people since the NFC Championship have been calling it outrageous that only one team touches the ball. That’s also ridiculous. It’s also up to the special teams and defense to come through in overtime. If they do that, then the team that loses the coin toss will also get their chance to put their offense on the field and score. The overtime rules don’t need to be changed. It’s not all about the offenses.

I do agree that Manning is overrated to some extent. He’s a great QB, but not the greatest. Before last weekend, the MSM was practically worshiping him as a god. It just goes to show that they are totally clueless and unworthy of our attention.
