Saints offseason...

I know that the Saints just won the Super Bowl last week. I never want to get rid of this feeling. It's crazy though, right? I mean, we as Saints fans will probably never get tired of talking about where we were during Garrett Hartley's kick sending us to the Super Bowl or where we watched the big game versus New Orleans' "favorite son" Peyton Manning. I'm not sure how many people I could get to back me up on this, but I had said before the Super Bowl even started that our defense was better than the Indy's defense by leaps and bounds. I really do believe that, when healthy, we have one of the best secondaries in the league. With Jabari Greer putting up Darrelle Revis type numbers all season and Tracy "Da GameChanger" Porter making plays when it counts, not to mention the Sharper/Harper connection, we shouldn't be known as a team that allows the long ball for too much longer.
There is, however, much that we can improve to help our defense in the offseason. It's not that I don't think that our linebacking core is legit. I think that they're great. But the Saints haven't had a dominant, hard hitting LB since the Dome Patrol days. That's not to say that Vilma, Shanle, and Fujita aren't doing their job. They are doing what they're asked to do. We just have trouble keeping up with physical, speedy tight ends. Tony Gonzales, Brent Celek, Dallas Clark. The Saints had a hard time keeping up with these guys. I really think that we need to draft a quick, hard hitting outside linebacker. Sergio Kindle from Texas stands out the most in my mind. Whether or not he's available with the 32nd pick (man that sounds good) remains to be seen.
As far as our defensive line goes, I think we have everyone necessary to have a competitive front four. Hargrove played lights out this year. He did way more than I would have ever thought. Ayodele played very well along Ellis when he was healthy. Clancy was put on IR earlier in the season, but I still think he's a reliable backup. I really like DeMario Pressley and think that he can become a great run stuffer if he were given the reps. McCray really came on after Charles Grant went down with his injury. I can see him starting next year if we release Grant or if he gets used in a backup role. Grant really underperformed this year...a year where I thought he would blow his critics out of the water. He has had nagging injuries for the last two years. I was under the impression that he was finally healthy and his play would show it. I wouldn't mind using a draft pick to address our defensive line, but I wouldn't want to use a first or second rounder on it. I think we have more pressing needs at the linebacking position.
Lastly, as much as Harper has impressed me with his run defense and blitzing abilities, I'd really like to see the Saints bring in someone to compete with him. It's not that I don't think he does a great job, but he has a hard time falling back into coverage. I think that was one of our biggest problems before Sharper got here, we didn't have safeties that could make that transition easily. With that being said, I DO NOT want to see the Saints move Malcom Jenkins to safety. He showed so much promise playing in nickel and dime situations. I think we could possibly afford to address the strong safety position in the draft.
Don't think that I forgot about Arnoux and Vaughn. If these guys came around and played lights out like I've heard they can, then that'll just add to the depth at the safety and linebacking positions.
The Saints have a good problem on their hands. They just won the Super Bowl and they have players that want to continue to play here. They have players that want to end their careers as a Saint. It's a great time to be a New Orleans Saints fan. Live it up, guys.

Totally just made a similar post.

Regarding our D, I think we need to get our one big name FA in the LB position.

I also think we need to let Sharper walk. I LOVE what he did for us this year, and im glad he got his ring, but he was slow near the end of the season and in the playoffs, and he had a lot of arm tackles.

From the reports out of TC this past off-season, Double G really liked Chip Vaughn, likening him to Sean Taylor. Which considering Gregg labeled Taylor one of the best players he ever coached, I think that says something. Give the kid a chance to start.

Harper played like he was supposed to this year, he should stay. Greer and Porter, barring injury, will continue to be one of the best tandems in the NFL. Fujita needs to be resigned, and with Vilma holding down the middle, we need athleticism outside, Lunch Pail Shanle must go. Bring in Bullocks or Joey P.

On DL, we need to keep the Fresh Prince, and cut Grant. If we dont make a run at LB, go after Peppers, and let McCray rotate in on 3rd down situations. Sed Ellis and Pressley are our future in the middle, with Clancy on rotational basis.

This is the first off-season where I literally feel completely confident in our team and ultimately feel that no major changes need to be made.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

We aren’t going to be able to go after any big name FA’s in the offseason unless we release some of our better players. That’s just how free agency is going to work this year with the uncapped season. I don’t see us cutting Darren. He means too much to this team both as a player and a mentor. Grant might not get cut either. He may have to take a backseat to either McCray or a rookie.

"I'm so proud of you. I'm so proud of you." - Darren Sharper to Tracy Porter after his 74 yard interception return for a touchdown in Super Bowl XLIV.

We can sign our own UFAs but we can’t sign anybody else’s. Unless we lose one of our own first. Oh and that’s lose to another team not just release.

MUCH more concerned with D Line

When I look at our D this year, the biggest problems I see are the porus front 7 – especially front 4 – on the run and a lack of pass rush at times, again much on the front 4. I think our LB corps is solid, maybe not spectacular but very solid. You don’t hang with teams like Indy without LBs who can come up big when called on. All season the “big run” was a pain. I’d love to see us either get a BIG, athletic run-stuffer DT early in the draft or a athletic, pass rush talented DE. We should be able to get LB depth down in the 3rd or 4th rounds or look in free agency. Interesting note – Kyle Williams – LSU DT who was the Buffalo Bills Defensive MVP for the team this year may end up being available since there are reports that they are changing D schemes and Williams no longer fits their future alignment. He’s good and would be a nice addition for us (another LSU boy on the team is nice too) – what I’ve seen of him in the pro’s is good size, good pass rush, high energy and effort guy – if he were available it would be interesting to give him a look. I’d also like to see us pick up some O line depth – never a bad thing to have additional line depth to work with and develope. Just my thoughts, what do ya’ll think?

One last note – been deployed to Iraq for most of this season and I ended up being able to see more Saints games here than I could see in the states…go figure!

LSU! LSU!!

Patrick Peterson is not on the 2010 NFL Combine invitee list. I don’t think he’s coming out until 2011.

I've been trying to post this, but...

I can’t create a new post. I keep getting this java stuff. So I am attaching it here and hope someone will see this. I was in Raleigh this weekend and heard on local talk radio that the Panthers and Saints are negotiating a trade for Julius Peppers. Peppers is reported as wanting desperately to go to the Saints. The trade rumor is this:

The Panthers will negotiate a three year deal with Peppers and immediately trade him to the Saints for a second round pick this year and a conditional pick next year depending on production. The lowest the pick could be is a 4th and highest another 2nd. I have two questions:

1. Do we really want Peppers, who never seems satisfied with his role on a team (translated: he is very selfish)?

2. Is he worth possibly two second round picks?

1. I kinda doubt it, but then again, I would be happy to be pleasantly surprised. No matter how much of a “trite” saying it may be, winning really does cure all. So I suppose it could work out.

2. If he’s worth having at all, he’s worth at least the one 2nd rounder and probably both. But that’s the rub. Would he prove worth having? Not sure.

There are two big problems here. One is that trading with a division rival is really, really rare. I mean, it happens, but not very often. And then two, the conditions of the franchise tag meant that Peppers couldn’t sign an extension after a certain point last year. Forget when it was, but it was a long time ago. And so far as I know, he can’t sign a new contract until the new year rolls around at which point anybody can sign him.

So I kinda figure this was just somebody who did want him on the Saints (or desperately wanted the Panthers to get some sort of compensation for him) making crap up.

For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.

I think...

he’s worth a second round pick (for sure), but is he also worth the money we’d have to pay him… maybe.

he’s had double digit sacks for 6 out of his 8 years… including the last two years. Last year he had 2 INT’s and in both of the last 2 years he’s had 5 forced fumbles.

The only questions are: can we get our of Big C’s contract, and how much does peppers want in base/signing bonus?

The conventional wisdom is

It will take 15 million a year in some form to sign Peppers. Conventional wisdom is that it will have to structured in such a manner as to anticipate a lockout in 2011.

by Ajun Cajun on Feb 15, 2010 10:46 PM CST reply actions

Do not forget

We are going to need to restructure Brees/Sharper’s contract even before we consider this.

Secondaly take the 15 mil could sign sharper a 2 year deal at 6.5 mil a year with 5.0 Guarnteed.
Take 2 mil give greer and porter some love. that leaves you with mil to play with.

How many people are we willing to loose this season or next just to get J. Peppers?

Sharper's staying

Just got this text from ESPN: “NFL.com: Saints will place franchise tag on S Darren Sharper, giving him 6.45 million salary in 2010”

I guess that’s one question answered!
