2010 Available NFL Free Agents: Offense
Time now to switch up our free agent coverage this week and take a look at every other teams free agents to see who might be worth picking up.
Today we're taking a look at offensive players. After the jump you will find a fairly complete list of available free agents during the 2010 off-season, broken down by position then further broken down by free agency status. No promises that it's 100% complete or even accurate but I think it's fairly reliable. The great people over at Walter Football were the original source for most of this information with some cross-referencing via other random websites.
Keep in mind that this list assumes no new CBA, so certain players who might have previously been considered unrestricted are listed as restricted. When discussing possible Saints acquisitions, also remember that because of the top 8 rule, the Saints will not be allowed to sign any unrestricted free agent unless they give up an unrestricted free agent.
Discuss.

Eugene Amano was the offensive player I was most interested in obtaining. Sounds as if his agent has hammered out a contract extension with the Titans, so I guess we’ll have to look elsewhere for interior line depth. Mawae (Amano’s predecessor) and Rabach are both running on empty tanks. The Redskins signed Kory Lichtensteiger (to replace Rabach) about a month ago, another young center with a lot of promise. That’s one area where the Saints could definitely stand to improve. I’m thinking via the draft, as the UFA pickings are looking mighty slim.
At QB, I like Josh McCown among the younger veteran prospects. I’d feel more comfortable with him, than with Brunell at #2. John Beck might be worth pursuing also, but I’d honestly rather a guy with starting experience and McCown has more of that. Not to mention, he’s been exposed to Mike Martz’s tutelage in Detroit.
The “other” Adrian Peterson would be a great addition, in terms of special teams. I don’t know that he’d be much of an upgrade over Bell or Hamilton at RB, though.
Several of those UFA OTs would be a better option than breaking the bank for Jammal Brown. We’re not going to land a true franchise LT with the 32nd pick, so the stop gap route might be the way to go, with Bushrod battling it out with whomever we bring in.
Basically, parting ways with Brown would be our green light to significantly improve another area. If that area isn’t OLB or DL, then it probably isn’t worth it to intentionally open that can of worms. Granted, it may still happen, if Brown gets loopid (Digital Underground term) and refuses to sign his one-year tender. That’s pretty much the key to the whole shebang. Even if he wasn’t coming off a season-ending injury, he’s not worth Top 5 LT money, yet that’s likely what he’s going to be seeking.
Personally, I’d rather earmark those extra $Ms towards Jahri Evans’s extension and hope someone makes Brown an offer he can’t refuse. Draft pick compensation + UFA leeway + substantial savings, all for a guy we won the Super Bowl without? I’m fine with that. Hell, worst case scenario, shift Stinchcomb over to the left until someone better comes along. He’d be no more out of his element over there than Brown is already.

I don't understand
Why you dislike Brown so much? He’s a 2 time Pro Bowler, and he’s never been awful or even bad for that matter. And if you think Bushrod or Stinchcomb can continue to fill in, then you’re wrong. We already can’t sign anyone unless we lose people, so there’s another thing getting in our way. So, we give Brown a fair contract and then we see if we have to use a stop-gap.
Why not us? http://hornetshoops.blogspot.com/
Brown’s a RT playing out of position. He excels at pass protection, but is sub-par at outside run blocking, something the Saints’ current backfield personnel revolves around. Forget the two Pro Bowls. One was as a RT (his rookie season), the other after Brees had a phenomenal season passing the ball. He’s living on a reputation that stems from his manhandling of Julius Peppers in the 2005 season opener. That’s truly the last time he’s shown any semblance of All-Pro level dominance. He’s good for one holding call and one false start per game, almost without fail. I’m not saying he’s not an exceptional offensive lineman, nor am I saying I don’t like him. I’m just saying he’s not a franchise LT. Not by longshot.
Those two Pro Bowls appearances are inevitably going to be what makes him a rich SOB. I just don’t think they carry enough weight for it to be at our expense. A “fair” contract would be whatever Stinchcomb is making on the right side, because Brown truly isn’t any better than that. In terms of reality, we’re not talking about that kind of money. We’re talking “about to make bank”. As in, Chris Samuels figures. There’s nothing prudent about that, based on his performance at LT. Why am I wrong, if I think Bushrod and Stinchcomb can continue to fill in? Can you elaborate on that? It’s not a situation I would consider to be ideal, but why is it out of the question? Also, how would retaining Brown help our UFA quest?
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
agreed...
I think he got alot of props not due to his play, which is sometimes suspect, but because Drew Brees is so quick with his decisions. I think alot people who vote Pro Bowl look at the number of sacks Drew takes and they say “Hey, this guy must get great protection, it must be due to the LT.” I heard Steve Cort (I think) say that Jamal Brown is the most overrated player on the roster. (Which includes Reggie)
With all that being said, I think Jamal Brown would be AWESOME trade bait for a bunch of teams looking for OL help
Colts fans are officially the worst sore losers and their home is Stampede Blue. Don't laugh Vikings fans... you're a close second!
The only drawback to that approach is gauging trade interest, prior to offering a tender. Unless Brown is 100%, there’s not going to be many teams inquiring as to his availability. So, what do you do in that situation? You could sign him to a one-year extension and pursue a trade closer to training camp, but then you’re putting yourself behind the eight ball, in terms of adequate depth. No moreso than you were in ‘09 though, so that’s probably the best bet. Anything long term seems foolhearty, imo. What if he re-injures the knee in training camp? What if he doesn’t and there’s still no real interest? Not such a big deal this year with an uncapped season, but it could be seriously debilitating in 2011, especially if he proves to be dead weight. At the same time, as long as we’re making the playoffs every year, when do you ever truly get the opportunity to improve upon that highly sought after position? While that’s a legitimate angles as well, you do occasionally have guys like Marcus McNeill who slip into the 2nd round. Michael Oher went as low as 23rd just this past season. I don’t know if those examples outweigh the D’Brickashaw Fergusons, Joe Thomases and Jake Longs, in terms of overall quality, but it’s not like anyone’s shooting for the top of the draft going in. That’s more of a consolation, not a goal. What’s frustrating, at least to me, is that we were in position to draft at least three of those guys outright and settled for a more pressing need at the time. If we’re ever going to become a true dynasty, we need to start thinking BPA (and long term) more often.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I think you're unfairly painting his comment.
Brown is a good player. But perhaps not worth the cost. What CP is saying is that the benefits of letting him go might outweigh those costs.
We already can’t sign anyone unless we lose people
That’s what we’re talking about. Letting a guy go who:
we won the Super Bowl without

Possibilities
The offensive FA’s I could see us looking into are at running back, backup QB, guard, and tackle. Of course under the new rules as a final 4 team we can only sign a UFA if we lose a player of the same salary size. So there are several possibilities I see. Starting at RB.
We still stuggled this year in short yardage situations, and Mike Bell’s early season performance completely fizzled down the stretch to a point where all he did was short yardage stuff. And a lot of times he couldn’t even get the yard that we needed. The same thing goes for Lynell Hamilton. While both of those guys are role players, I could see at least Bell being replaced with LenDale White, who just last season had 15 touchdowns, many of them coming on the goal line, which he dominated.
Now for backup QB. There are a lot of options left out there, and I see 2 guys that have always gone great jobs in their backup roles. Those guys being Jeff Garcia and A.J. Feely. I have never been as high on Brunell has everyone else has been. He never really did much, even in preseason. Feely and Garcia are proven backups who understand the role and are capable of starting in a pinch or a few games.
The other positions can be filled with a bunch of people.
Why not us? http://hornetshoops.blogspot.com/
Jeff Garcia as backup QB
I was just about to post the same thing about replacing Brunell with Jeff Garcia. I’ve always liked him and he still seems like he’d be better than Brunell, even though I haven’t seen him play in over a year. He was always accurate, smart, and very mobile. I think he’d like to finish out his career backing up Brees and teaming up with Payton. Of course, the last thing we want to see is Brees go down and a back-up, whoever that is, come in.

We've got 4 votes for Garcia.
Pigs have flown! Hell has frozen over! The Saints HAVE WON the Superbowl!!
I like Garcia too
Unfortunately, he’s not a ton younger than Brunell. I’d be happy if the Saints got younger at backup QB, and he’s not the answer to that. Plus, he may or may not be an ***hole. He’s had trouble sticking to teams in the past, though I don’t personally believe that was his fault. On the upside, he plays the same brand of QB as Brees, just not as well, and not as solid with the deep ball, and he has excelled in the backup role before(we played him down to the fourth quarter in the ‘06 divisional round, not McNabb). All in all, I’d be pretty happy about having him behind Brees, but I’m not certain he’d be happy to be there, and I don’t know how much longer one could expect him to provide any security at QB2, just like Brunell.

4 guys living in the past
Look at your post dates on your comments. It’s 2010. Garcia turns 40 in a week. 40!!! He’s shorter than Brees. He is rumored to be… um… frivolous, shall we say (Any Barney Miller fans out there?) … not that there’s anything wrong with that. Anyway, his career is over. He tried out for the Steelers in November and couldn’t cut it.
You know that what you eat you are,

Not saying he's the best option
Just that I think he’d be better than Brunell. Who knows, maybe Chase Daniel will surprise us and become Payton’s next star prodigy. I won’t hold my breath, but anything’s possible.

Neil Patrick Harris is absolutely frivolous
Tried to google this, couldn’t find it. Talk about obscure. Barney Miller episode, foreign guy comes to the police station wanting political asylum, patriot Wojo says they must help him, the guy wouldn’t do that for for frivolous reasons, foreign guy says “Oh I’m not frivolous, I’m homoSEXual…” yada yada

Is an attitude problem waiting to happen. Especially with the limited role he would play in or offense.

Here's another QB possibility
Marc Bulger will soon be released by St. Louis.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter disputes a report that Bulger cleaned out his locker at Rams Park, explaining that it was cleaned out by the team’s equipment staff — just as the other players’ lockers had been. We still expect Bulger to be released, possibly after the Rams try and fail to shop him for a late-round pick. [from RotoWorld]
Matthew Darnell asks the question,
Did the Rams get worse because Bulger wasn’t playing well, or did Bulger get worse because the Rams surrounded him with a roster that shouldn’t even be allowed to watch the playoffs on television?
Good question. Darnell and I both suspect it was mainly the lack of talent (and offensive continuity) that dragged Bulger down. I wonder if his play wouldn’t describe a drastic upward curve if he were surrounded by good talent and a top-notch scheme. At one time, he looked like a legitimate heir to Kurt Warner, and I don’t think you can do that without having actual ability.
Bear in mind we’re talking about a back-up, not a substitute for Drew except in dire emergency. Is it better to have someone who is younger and healthier but who has never been a winner, or someone who has a lot of question marks but who functioned at a high level in the past? (I guess that last describes Brunell, as well.)
"My prediction for next year's SB: Saints vs. 2nd Place."
Bulger was coached up by Martz early on. I think that has more to do with his success, than his raw talent which is fairly run-of-the-mill, imo. Considering that he’d be under Payton’s tutelage here, that’s not of paramount concern. His inability to stay healthy is, though. No offense, but his track record of injuries has made Chris Chandler seem reliable by comparison.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Bulger would actually be our 2nd Rams/Martz cast-off, following Jamie Martin. He would also add to the dwindling number of Haslett draft picks still on the roster. We’re down to six now, I think. Grant, Smith, Henderson, Brown, Stinchcomb and Leisle. Nesbit played under Haslett, but went undrafted.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I thought "Oh that's a good idea"
No wonder.
Boom.
I’m redeemed, baby.

Who Dat Hulu
The NFL is now on HULU. Last night I viewed the NFL Team Highlight of the 2005 season and the 2006 playoff game against the Eagles . It really made me appreciate what the team and organization meant to New Orleans and what the people meant to the Saints. It also made be appreciate this years “World Champion New Orleans Saints.”
Really?
Once Billy Miller gets healthy, I think he, Shockey, and Mr. Wendys will be a pretty good TE corps. Darnell Dinkins is supposed to be a good run blocker, so he might be worth holding on to as well. One or two more camp bodies at TE would be good to grab, but I don’t know if we need to pay too much for another TE in free agency.

just saying that we have never been lucky with TE health. obviously shockey is a question mark. miller was hurt. dinkins was a non-factor. throw JP Foschi in there as our #3 guy. he wont be too expensive. thomas can be a saftey valve they will will end up starting cause they are all injury prone.
I'm not really familiar with Foschi
OK, I’ve never even heard of him. Why Foschi?
"My prediction for next year's SB: Saints vs. 2nd Place."
He played for the Bengals last year and was about the only bright spot on an otherwise outright putrid TE corp. At least he didn’t drop TDs that were in his mitts when he was wide open like other TEs on that roster last year.
Honestly, I doubt we really want him anyway, but I’m also pretty sure that if the Bengals want him back he won’t be going anywhere.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
let's not get too excited; Dinkins is probably a safer bet
Rotoworld.com:
John Paul Foschi-TE- Bengals Dec. 20 – 7:58 pm et
J.P. Foschi broke out with seven catches for 82 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Chargers. Talk about coming out of the woodwork. Foschi started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Raiders in 2005 and then bounced around the league before finally getting another shot with the Bengals this season. He’s more of a blocker than a pass-catcher and this figures to be the best game of Foschi’s career. Don’t pick him up.
Jesus1000 is a concept by which we measure our pain.
Yeah, as I said, I don’t think we really want him.
But the Bengals rely on their TEs to block and catching passes really is secondary. So if they want him back, we don’t have a shot.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
At QB, I like the idea of McCown or Pennington. McCown has filled in at least a passable capacity for other teams before, and I think Pennington is smart enough to manage the offense and get the ball into the hands of Saints better equipped to do something with it than he is. I know that sounds like an insult, but it’s not meant to be.
Garcia has never viewed himself as a backup. Maybe at this point in his career he’d be willing to accept it, but these are pro football egos we’re talking about.
GEAUX AFTER
Mawae. I know, I know, you are probably thinking that he is too old and been in the league too long to be of any real assistance to us, but I like the guy. He is a stand up guy, brings heart and leadership to the table, and does a pretty damn good job of run blocking. Some kid for Tennessee ended up rushing for something like 2000 yards or so didn’t he? Believe his name was, hmmm, Johnson. Chris Johnson, yeah, that’s it. I think Mawae has a few more years left in him, and I would love to see him in Black and Gold. Would definitely have to run out and buy a Jersey for sure. His home town is New Llano, Louisiana, he played football for LSU, he would be closer to his family, how many more excuses do I need to root for this deal???!!!
