Analyzing the Saints 2010 Free Agents: Receivers & Tight Ends
We turn back now to our look at Saints players set to become free agents. Today, we're discussing receivers and tight ends. The tight end position is particularly interesting because every player at the position not named Jeremy Shockey will enter free agency this off-season. That leaves much to discuss. More after the jump.
Of course I can't forget the official 2010 off-season disclaimer...
Throughout this series of posts, it's important to keep in mind the very real possibility that a new CBA will not be reached this off-season and that the 2010 season will uncapped. This means that any 4th or 5th year players, who would normally be unrestricted, then become restricted. This is represented by an asterisk(*).
Also keep in mind that because of the top eight provision, the Saints will not be allowed to sign any unrestricted free agents unless they let the equal value of unrestricted free agents back onto the market.
Lance Moore
Wide Receiver
Restricted Free Agent
Analysis: He was Drew's favorite target in 2008 but Lance's production was hampered significantly by his absence due to injury this season. I'm still a big fan, however, so I would like to see him stay. Like they did last year, I think they tender an offer. If another team is interested, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Saints take the draft pick compensation and let Moore leave; the Saints have plenty of receivers.
Opinion: Tendered offer. Don't know what happens after that.
Courtney Roby
Wide Receiver
Restricted Free Agent*
Analysis: I gotta say, Roby really won me over toward the end of the season with his special teams play. Watching Morstead punt and Roby down it on the two-yard line with surprising consistency was just a thing of beauty. It's exactly what the Saints were missing and what Payton was madly searching for when they cycled through a million punters last year. Seriously, it was like a million. For his special teams play alone, I want to see him stay. Thanks to the uncapped season Roby, who would normally have been unrestricted, is now restricted.
Opinion: Keep him.
Dan Campbell
Tight End
Unrestricted Free Agent
Analysis: I couldn't really tell you anything about Dan Campbell other than I remember him looking like a member of Nickelback. Campbell was placed on IR very early last season so fans never got to know him. I wouldn't plan on ever getting to know him.
Opinion: He's gone.
Billy Miller
Tight End
Unrestricted Free Agent
Analysis: Billy is part of the heart and soul of the New Orleans Saints and everyone's favorite hard-nosed tight end. He has stayed active and involved with the organization and media even while spending the entire year on IR. I'm expecting the Saints to offer Miller a contract, perhaps something short term. The only question is: Where does he now stand on the depth chart?
Opinion: Welcome back, Billy.
Dave Thomas
Tight End
Restricted Free Agent*
Analysis: One of the most pleasant surprises of the season - other than winning the Super Bowl - was the emergence of The Baconator. I think he's earned a spot in Payton's heart and on his roster. Expect to see Thomas next year fighting Billy Miller for the second spot.
Opinion: He stays.
Darnell Dinkins
Tight End
Unrestricted Free Agent
Analysis: Dinkins wasn't much of a factor on the field this season, with only five catches for 22 yards. Injuries may have been to blame. My fondest memory of him this season was his penchant for standing up on the bench and waving a towel at the crowd in an effort to get them loud on key downs. Depending on how many tight ends they want to keep, the Saints may let him walk or keep him around for competition and depth purposes if it's cheap.
Opinion: Wouldn't be surprised to see him leave.

SS, this may sound nitpicky but it’s really not. You have an error in your text.
Also keep in mind that because of the top eight provision, the Saints will not be allowed to sign any unrestricted free agents unless they let the equal value of unrestricted free agents back onto the market.
This is incorrect. And incredibly misleading. People would think from this that if we just leave Jammal Brown untagged with a restricted tender then he’s “out on the market” and so we can sign somebody else. Which is completely false. Not only do we have to not tag him (thus getting no compensation when he signs elsewhere) but he also has to actually sign with another team before we can sign anybody else.
We can’t “release to the market”. We must actually lose to the market.

Ahh...
You’re right, I did word that is a misleading manner. But I did say unrestricted free agents. So your scenario doesn’t really work because Jammal Brown would be a restricted free agent. If the Saints don’t use a franchise tag or make an offer to an unrestricted free agent, technically they’re just out on the market.

If we fail to tender Brown within the RFA period, then he automatically becomes a UFA who is “out on the market”. But until he signs elsewhere, he wouldn’t count as a UFA lost.
Now I figure there’s about 2 snowball’s worth of chance in hell that we don’t tender him at all. But it’s theoretically possible.

Oh I see the problem now. My wording “untagged with a restricted tender” was confusing. I meant that to say “without a qualifying tender offered/applied”. But it could be interpreted as “not given the franchise/transition tag”. Sorry for that poor phrasing.

I love the versatility
That David Thomas brings. Good hands, good lead blocker. I say Thomas then Miller in that order (dependent on his recovery).
For your information Viking's and Colt's fans, no matter how much you say it, you were not the better team in 2009.
Roby
Has what it takes to be a special teams pro bowler. But then again I thought Morstead would make the pro bowl this year.
I'll be your huckleberry- Doc Holliday to Ringo
Well he really should have gotten at least the 4th string or so. And if he keeps it up, he’ll get there soon.

Yea
He was a rookie. His name is out there now.

I agree with your assessment 100%
I liked Roby frommthe start. he’s important and he can be a 6th receiver too so he has a lot of value. Gotta keep D Thomas- he can do a lot of things and seems like a smert player.

I agree that Billy Miller will be given a chance
but I don’t think he’ll make the team. A torn achilles tendon is one of the toughest injuries to rebound from. He’s 32, and so much of his game was his ability after the catch to make plays. I just think this was the worst kind of injury he could have. I’m not betting against Billy because I love him and I hope he sticks, but I just think realistically he has a mountain to climb. You figure Shockey and David Thomas are locks to stay, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Saints draft a promising young pass catcher with Shockey’s constant health problems. I think Billy will get his chance in camp but I don’t think he’ll make the final roster. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s how I see it playing out.
Even if all he can do anymore is block, he’s still worth bringing to camp. But I hope he can do more and can stick around a few more years.

I like Lance, but
I see Payton wanting to get bigger at the position by moving Arrington up from the practice squad. Look how it worked for Meachem. Can you imagine Colston and Meachem and Arrington and possibly Roby in a four wide set? It’d spell the end of the 5’9" corner with all that size. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if either Devery or Lance would end up as trade bait.
Oh boy that could get interesting… teams drafting CBs that are 6’2" simply because they’re tall enough not because they’re good enough…
Still, I think Lance will be around another year or two.

That is pretty intimidating
But you see what a good little slot receiver can do. When healthy, Lance seems to find the holes pretty well and be there if Drew’s deep routes don’t work out. I mean, if Arrington’s (or Robys) got the speed, knowledge, and health to do those same things then keep him for cheeper. But, I’m not sold on him yet. I’d like to keep Devery man.

I like what Miller brought to our team before he got hurt
he’s always seemed consistent imo and we just got Mr. Wendy’s. I say keep Miller and Thomas and let the other TEs walk. Hope we keep Moore. I’m like you about Roby. Wasn’t that impressed untill later in the season and it was more as a gunner than a return guy. Roby and Jenkins as gunners was worked great. I wonder who would be let go at WR if we had to let one go. Henderson, Moore, Meachem, or Roby? I would keep Meachem for sure and probably Roby because of his ST performance this past year. Moore or Henderson though? I think Moore moves the chains better but Henderson is the ever present deep threat. Henderson really showed a good ability to move the chains this year too. I think Henderson fits in better into our offense than Moore. Just thoughts though.
Superbowl bound!!!...I know! do you?! Go Saints!!
I BELIEVE
one top notch tackle and the rest defence. Maybe a Q.B. say 5th round but I don’t even want to think about TEs,feel we’re set. Just a thought’, we won a super bowl without Charles Grant, lots of salary could be used on a proven tackle. Not that i’m complaining much buttttttt it sure makes me nervous when Brees gets hit.
OldFartFan
good point
I think we need to invest in a defensive tackle as well. It was our “weakest link” the entire season.
I also think we should bypass the whole linebacker pick this draft, unless B. SPIKES is available.
If he is then i think it will be to tempting to pass on him.
All of this will depend on if the DT fits in better than the ILB

OLB is a need
a younger faster guy would be able to stick on better TEs like gonzalez, winsolw, and clark. It got annoying at times this season. Our guys out there now are solid, but don’t do that great in that aspect of the game.

Should we trade Lance Moore?
I’ve thought for years that Moore was the next Wes Welker; but the Saints’ offense, which works well even without Reggie Bush, doesn’t need Wes Welker in order to function. Lance is a great player, and I’d love to see him stay in black and gold; but I don’t see him getting significantly more playing time than he did this year. When you’re stuck behind Colston, Henderson, and Meachem, how many times can you possibly be targeted?
If Lance moves to another team, he has the opportunity to be a star. I feel intense loyalty toward all the guys who helped to bring the Lombardi home; but maybe the best way to reward Lance is to let him leave. Put him in a situation where he can finally realize his potential, as he started to do in 2008. Sometimes, if you love them you have to set them free.
"My prediction for next year's SB: Saints vs. 2nd Place."
I say keep lance
He was hindered by injury.
When he is healthy, he is every bit as difficult to tackle in space as Reggie. His two catches in the superbowl were two of the best plays in the game. He is a matchup nightmare for other teams , yet is surprisingly overlooked by other teams. Would hate to see him go.

He would have games where he lead in catches
its just wouldn’t be every week. It isn’t that way with any of our WRs. Meach came on during middle. Colston had some big games early on. Devrey had a couple of big games. Hardly any WR besides Colston has consistenly been a big part of the Offense. And Lance is shifty but he is not as evasive as Reggie BCS.

he's got quick feet, man
and knows when to dance and when to get upfield. If not Reggie, at least Welker-like.

Darnell will stay because nobody will want him
Moore is great. He has shown that he can consistently come through. I say 1 year contract for him.
I like Billy Miller but I’m also interested in seeing if we can add via a rookie or unkonwn akin to Dave Thomas. I don’t think that Billy Miller will ever be away from the Saints organization. He’ll become an assistant coach or something at this point if he doesn’t make the team. He’s a Saint, through and through.
Thomas AND Miller
Campbell retired, so why the vote? Billy Miller was David Thomas before David Thomas was David Thomas. He was last year’s leading TE in receptions, wasn’t he? Plus he continued to stay involved with the team through his blog when he could have been off rehabbing elsewhere. He IS a Saint. Thomas IS a Saint. Bring ’em both back! Money be damned!
"baconator" lmao.

I think Thomas and Miller are both good when healthy
Thomas is a little better blocker I’m assuming since they moved him to fullback. Also, at this point he is probably a little quicker than Billy. However, Billy put a little more punishment on the Defenses after the catch, Thomas seems to go down fairly easy for a TE. We should room frosty with Shockey next year in training camp and keep Miller as a 3rd TE if he comes back good (keep Billy in orginization no matter what).
