Everyone loves Bush!
NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that the Saints are "not even contemplating" releasing Reggie Bush, despite an impending $8M salary. Lombardi indicated that asking Bush to take a pay cut isn't even in New Orleans' immediate plans. Bush, still just 25, saw career lows in carries and catches last season, but still somehow found a way to score eight all-purpose TDs. He'll return as a change-of-pace player/punt returner in 2010.
Obviously, this is just a rumor but lets hope a true one. Bush is set for an even bigger year next year in my opinion and is needed for us to go Back to Back. Get Crunk!
Any thoughts?

If winning the Super Bowl proved anything, it’s that if you predict something will happen every season without fail, eventually it will come to fruition. That being said, Bush will have a monster year in 2010. I can feel it in every fiber of my breakfast cereal.

No expectations, No more “bust” talk, No lady issues….all this is a recipe for a pro-bowl season.

Yeah, I gotta thought
…give him the ball more.
Instead of replacing Mike Bell with LaDainian Tomlinson, why not replace him with Reggie Bush? He gained 5.6 per carry last season. Let’s ride this as far as it will take us.

HUGE REC!!
And when you give him the ball… how about some stretch plays (like the one he got 12 or so yards in the SB) and well blocked screens.
Pigs have flown! Hell has frozen over! The Saints HAVE WON the Superbowl!!
I know I have supported bringing in LT
in other posts. But I like this idea even better! I never wanted to bring him in to replace Reggie. But if Reggie can stay healthy for the whole season I believe that he could be absolutely special.

I’ll agree here. Now that Reggie apparently has gotten it through his head that running over people isn’t “rude” thanks to Heath Evan’s advice, he might turn out to be worth his huge salary after all.
Even if not, I say give him a shot and hope it works out.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
Without a paycut?
I mean, I know it’s an uncapped season, but that’s a lot of money for a backup hybrid RB/WR
Why are you so worried about money? Do you get some sort of special tax exemption, if Benson doesn’t spend as much as he did in ’09?

I know right? I'm questioning if this is even the same coldpizza...
Who hacked your account?
Don't worry I got your back cuz...
I want to keep Reggie, and I personally don't care if they pay him the $8mil, but...
more money for one player = less money for other players
They have a budget and a multi-year strategy when it comes to paying players.
Team owners do not have unlimited budgets, and even if they did… It’s not all about this year.
Pigs have flown! Hell has frozen over! The Saints HAVE WON the Superbowl!!
Is it foolish to hope he may be better next year?
I don’t think so. I’ve often heard that certain knee injuries like the one Bush sustained in 2008 take around two years to fully heal. This might explain why Payton kept a close watch on his reps all season. That has to be one reason for Bush’s lessened production this past season. He wasn’t getting as many opportunities. I say pay the man and deal with his salary next year.

Is it foolish to hope he may be better next year?
Foolish may be a strong word. How about a qualifying phrase like “high risk for disappointment”. He might blow out his other knee, who knows? Who was it who said “He needs to stop jumping like that or he’ll wear out his knees”, something to that effect. Hope not. I get a big thrill up my leg when he makes a highlight play, I really do.

Big thrills
Those leaps into the endzone are classic. They’ll be showing those forever. How many times have we already seen a replay of the “soar like a bird” TD highlight from the Miami game? 4,567?

but the smartest one and most important one was against the Vikings this year when Drew checked down to him
and he caught it, turned his body and switched the ball over to the left side of his body to sneak it in. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

revenue
I would imagine Reggie Bush generates more than $8 million each year for the Saints in ticket sales, jersey sales, memorabilia, and general goodwill. He’s a very popular player. Plus he is very talented. That makes him worth the money to the Saints.
I was just about to write the same thing
Reggie brings in a good bit of money to the franchise. Those jersey sales mean something and everybody knows it, including Reggie, Loomis, and the Bensons. In an uncapped year, Reggie is well worth $8 mill. His salary may take a big slice of the pie, but because of him the pie is bigger.

-- Saints coach Sean Payton, handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Drew Brees after Super Bowl 44.
Jersey sales and memorabilia are shared revenue. The Saints see no more from Reggie Bush related sales than any other team in the NFL.

Are you sure?
I read somewhere that one incentive for teams in this uncapped year is that the more successful teams tend to generate more revenue from licensing activities…..

I actually have no idea how the expired CBA affects all that this upcoming year. I was speaking in terms of “up to this point”, in response to medicineball’s post above.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Where did you get that from?
I’m not saying you are wrong, but it would seem odd if the Saints got no more for every Reggie Bush jersey sold than they do for every Peyton Manning or Brett Favre Jersey sold. It also makes me wonder how it is even remotely possible for a team like the Jaguars or Chiefs to not be able to make a profit when they have the Cowboys merchandising machine propping them up.

I’m pretty sure that what the owner’s make at the stadium (ticket sales, concessions, and all that) is where they get their “non-shared revenue” from. And even some of that is shared through the “supplemental revenue sharing” program.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
My understand of the revenue sharing system...
Is that the top 15 earning teams paid money on a tiered system to the bottom 17 earning teams. I didn’t think it mattered where the money was coming from, just how much of it a team was making, including all local income. Meaning teams in the top 5 earners paid $X into the revenue pool to be divied up to the lower income teams, teams 6-10 paid $Y, and teams 11-15 paid $Z. I could be wrong about how simple it is though.
On a side note, the owners have been saying the the revenue sharing program is going out the window in March. From an economic perspective I completely understand why Jerry Jones doesn’t want to pay the salaries of both the Dallas Cowboys and whatever teams can’t turn a profit on their own. From a fan perspective I don’t want to see the Kansas City Chiefs turn into the Kansas CIty Royals. The league needs parity.

I thought
each owner got to keep concessions, and luxury box revenue. That is why the newer stadiums are so important. When you build a new stadium, you put in plenty of luxury boxes. An old stadium doesn’t have any luxury boxes, in the grand scheme of things, that is a new concept. That is why owners hold cities hostage for new stadiums. Where do you think the added revenue from a new stadium comes from?
I hope they don’t get rid of revenue sharing. That is what makes the NFL great! Who wants to see the NFL with franchises like the KC Royals and the Pittsburgh Pirates? I understand Jerry is pissed because he has to share some of the fruit of his marketing genius with owners that coast, but DAMN, don’t kill the goose!

CP is right on this one....
Not that anyone is surprised…. Here is a good write-up on the NFL revenue sharing system. In short, memorabilia is shared revenue. So is TV income. Stadiums are a huge source of income that the owners get to keep. Ticket sales are split 60/40 (home to visiting team)

Trade him to...
Seattle for their second first round pick… I’m sure Pete Carroll would love to be reunited with Bush, Bush can be the number one back and we can get some defensive help in the draft…
or just keep him because he is a dangerous weapon and SP’s favorite toy.
Colts fans are officially the worst sore losers and their home is Stampede Blue. Don't laugh Vikings fans... you're a close second!
Just released on NFLN that the Saints are Keeping Bush.....And pay him
He was already in the budget anyway………………….
My Magnificent Black and Gold Warriors
I have always been a fan of Reggie
and every time i defend him to some of his haters, he does something dumb that makes me feel stupid. Like the muffed punt in the Vikings game. And yet I still defend him because he has the ability to take over a game. Look at the Cardinals game or the Vikings game 2 years ago on monday night. And I get this feeling that if we let him go, he will explode into this Hall of Fame player and just go nuts.
They made him an offer already
But they haven’t released the terms
