Ask a Colts Fan: Superbowl XLIV Edition!!!

In our earlier playoff games, Stampede Blue posted a forum on our opponents FanPosts in which they could ask a Colts fan anything - about the team, injuries, strategies, tendencies, chinks in the armor, strengths, weaknesses and so on and so forth.  I thought it was a really great idea to not only entertain good, competitive debate, but also to provide a more pointed and personal opportunity to address the opposition.

Star-divide

So, Canal Street Chronicles and Who Dat nation, what questions have you for us Colts fans at Stampede Blue?  Let's keep the adversarial commentary to a minimum, the LOLCats to a maximum, and try to have a little fun while we're at it.

This FanPost was written by a reader and member of Canal Street Chronicles. It does not necessarily reflect the views of CSC and its staff or editors.

Is Peyton Manning really the second coming of Christ?

Just kidding. Although, many talking heads seem to almost try to portray him as just that. This matchup has been so over-analyzed this past week that I’ve really got no questions. Freeney is the big topic of discussion, but I expect he will play and play at a high level regardless of the injury. I mean, it’s the Super Bowl. He’ll find a way to get on the field.

Here’s a serious question: with all the talk about Freeney and the Colts D-line, how are the rest of the Colts D when it comes to stopping the run and shutting down an accurate passer like Brees?

"I said this early on that this was a good football team, they just maybe had to have a stick put in certain parts of their body to play a little harder in certain places to where we’re able to take interceptions and score touchdowns."--Gregg Williams

Answer

Tim Tebow is the second coming of Christ.

But, concerning the Colts run/pass D, for as many yards they gave up on the ground during the regular season, they have found a way to completely shut down opposing teams’ rushing games in the playoffs. The Jets averaged over 170 yards/game and the ravens averaged over 135 and the colts held them to a combined 173 yards in 2 games.

Yes, to preemptively answer the follow up, these teams have not had the complementary passing offenses, so it was easier to shut down the run.

The saints are definitely head and shoulders above the Jets and Ravens, and I think the Colts will have more trouble defending the pass in this game.

And another point...

I honestly think that the best shot the Saints will have on offense is if they can establish their running game with Thomas and Bush. It will be harder for the Colts D to focus solely on stopping the run with Brees and his potent passing offense.

That will keep Manning on the sidelines and the clock running. Of course, this will only work out if the Saints walk away with 7 points instead of 3 at the end of each drive, because Peyton will score when he gets the ball.

Answer

Overall team defense and speed is very underrated. The key to the game will probably be which team’s defense can come up with the most stops, b/c I think the offenses will move the ball at will.

I expect Manning to have a stellar game, and despite the Saints affinity for creating turnovers, the Colts take very good care of the ball, and Peyton has been very accurate so far in these playoffs. I think the Saints will need to force at least 2+ turnovers to win this game.

Your D-Line versus our O-line

Curious as to your take on this match-up. With Freeney either out or at the very least less than 100%, how do you rate your chances of being able to apply enough pressure against Brees with our award winning O-line?

by Grumps on Feb 4, 2010 5:06 PM CST reply actions

Answer

I think Freeney will play much like he played in our Week 16 game vs. the Jets: on obvious passing downs with distance. That being said, Raheem Brock, will be Freeney’s primary fill-in, and he’s a savvy veteran with very good size and smarts.

Applying pressure will be more difficult with Freeney’s absence, but our Defense has a new attitude with New D Coordinator Larry Coyer…we blitz more, disguise more coverages, and are generally more aggressive (as opposed to Dungy’s vanilla Tampa-2 approach).

I think Coyer will throw in a few blitz packages with Melvin Bullitt and Gary Brackett in attempts to get more pressure on Brees, but it will be a lot tougher without Freeney at 100%.

As a longtime Colt fan, before the Saints were born, I have always pulled for da Colts, except when they played da Saints, so this is really a tuf Super Bowl for me. I mean, I cant lose, but I hate to tell you that da Saints are gonna win!!!

My question is, before the Colts came to Indy, who did you guys pull for? I mean, were you a Unitas fan, or what?

Colts fan my whole life!

Born in 85, the year after they moved here. I really only remember back to the Harbaugh days though. I had his jersey and got RIDICULED (and for good reason). We used to be just as much a laughing stock as the Saints were. That’s why we all love Peyton so much, he turned that football team (and in turn, the city of Indianapolis) into something legitimate. I’m sure you Saints fans can relate with the coming of Brees (at least with the FB team, the city pretty much speaks for itself)…

Coach Gregg Williams has an 11 player blitz in his playbook.

He used it against the Saints offense when he first got here to shake them up. It created a lot of confusion and a lot of the Saints players still laugh about it. How do you think the Colts would handle it?

by DrWhoDat on Feb 4, 2010 6:41 PM CST reply actions

I actually think that Williams might employ the same scheme as when he faced the Pats

With a lot of 3 and 4 man rushes and dropping the rest into coverage. Don’t get me wrong, i think he’ll blitz too, but he won’t make the same mistakes as Rex Ryan and blitz like there’s no tomorrow.

I Bleed Blue! Go Colts!

by Mr. Indianapolis Colts on Feb 4, 2010 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

An 11 player blitz?

Peyton would throw a quick 5 yard pass to either Clark or Collie who would then take it all the way for a TD.

Peyton loves blitzes, and an 11 player blitz would be an early birthday present.

I wasn't saying it like that.

I don’t think your characterization of them is true. Have you ever considered the fact that they may have just lost to better teams in the past?

How is beating #12 and #4 teams when you’re the #5 seed and then leading the #1 seed with 3-5 minutes left choking?

How is creaming the #10 seed as the #7 seed and then taking the #2 seed to overtime choking?

How is losing a #8 vs. #9 game choking?

Butler has flat-out lost to better teams in the tourney, and didn’t get blown out in any of them. That is NOT choking.

Just for the record, because you were discussing Freeney- he won't play

I have treated a multitude of sprain/ strains and have suffered them myself. Most are not that bad and you can work through them with some rest and treatment, some peseverence and some meds with a high pain tolerance. Most you can play with at a medium level of ability- not playing at 100% but maybe 75 or 80 %. When it gets to a 3rd degree level and there is actually a tearing of the fibers of the ligaments; 2 weeks won’t do. You can live in Michael Jackson’s hyperbaric chamber all you want, but an ankle is an ankle. Now, as a Saints fan I hope he and the coaching staff are stupid enough to give him a go. He will be ineffective and it will be demoralizing to the Colts defense to see their best player ashambles. We wil be able to run at him and he will be a waste for screen pasees and he clearly won’t get a sack. I don’t expect they will be that stupid, especially since they have raheem Brock who they think will get the job done, but that is pretty doubtful since he is merely a situational player and not a starter and not a pass rusher. And, against our formidable OL that rarely gives up a sack, Mathis will now get the double team and Brees will have all day. Of course, our defense will still have to stop the Colts- a formidable task. But GW will make it so Collie and Garcon will have to be Super Bowl MVPs for the colts to win and if they can do that, then they deserve the trophy. Addai won’t beat us and Reggie Wayne will draw a double team- one of them Sharper and I think Payton is too smart to throw into that,

Just "for the record"

He will play, that’s not the issue. The issue is how effective he will be. He is planning on trying some different things at practice tomorrow to see what he can and can’t do well. He plans on going harder for Saturdays practice. Freeney is a monster. He had a quad injury earlier this year that was suppose to keep him out for a minimum of 3 weeks. The dude came back the next week and had AT LEAST 2 sacks in the following 3 games. He has already said the pain is going down and the swelling is gone down significantly. Freeney knows his body and what he is capable of doing.

As for Brock, he may not be a “starter” but he plays a lot. He plays 3 different positions on the line. And pretty much anywhere else he is asked to go. And even if Brock does come in and play at DE on some downs, he is more than than just a schmuck who will have no effect. He’s not as fast as Freeney, but he can get the job done. You can double Mathis but he is pretty good at getting pressure. Even if Freeney isn’t 100% he will demand attention.

What you have just described here is the best possible scenario for your Saints...

And usually, when hoping for the best possible outcome, disappointment follows.

Freeney will play, but not much. I don’t think that he’s the key to the Colts’ winning the game though. Sure, he’d make life easier for us Boys in Blue, but he’s not the reason we made it this far.

I Bleed Blue! Go Colts!

by Mr. Indianapolis Colts on Feb 4, 2010 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

The Reason the Saints went 15-3...

was because Freeney wasn’t on the DL for those games. If he plays, the Saints lose. If he doesn’t play, the Saints win.

Really, the difference was that we would have likely double-teamed Freeney if he were 100%. That means having our RB bump him when he tried an outside speed rush before going in the flat, or having the G or C assist on the inside if he tried that spin, possibly opening an A gap. Neither of these will be needed regardless if he plays or not… at least not to the same extent that they would’ve game planned for it had he been healthy.
Am I saying the Colts DE won’t get to Brees? No, I’m not. I think their speed will still present a challenge. But I do think our offensive gameplan can be more spread options without Freeney at 100%.

Finish Strong.

Mr. Colts

Just wondering how you’d rate your special teams on both covering kicks/returns and returning kicks…given our offenses will be trading blows, it might come down to a special teams return that makes the difference Sunday.

Anticipating a follow-up, I offer this pre-emptively, to which I hope my CSC brethren will add to or correct my misperceptions.

The Saints would be OK at both.

We gave up a big punt return TD vs. TB in December, and to me it seems we are close to giving up a big one many times. But, we have some skills at covering Morstead’s kicks inside the 20, and Morstead can knock it into the endzone on kickoffs with pretty good regularity.

On the return game for us, Bush is always a threat, but he has only one return TD all year (vs. Cards). Roby is decent on KO returns, having a few long ones at opportune moments this year, and one for a TD vs. the Rams back in November.

Thanks in advance, I’m gonna hang up now and listen to your answer…

there is little to no return threat

I guarantee the Colts will start on the 20 yd line after every kickoff. Chad Simpson isn’t called the human touchback for no reason.

Because Pat McAfee is all that is man, the Colts coverage is very decent. He has a great leg and it forces a lot of fair catches/touchbacks.

Thats the light of it. I’m tired and don’t feel like giving any more effort than that.

Are you honestly not concerned at all about the Saints' ability to score at the same pace as the Colts?

You’ve suggested here that the Saints need to A) establish the run, B) not settle for field goals, and C) get at least +2 T.O.‘s to have a chance to win. Not trying to be real dicky or anything, but this team has excelled at all of those things all year, and several times all three in the same game. At best, I guess you could say your team’s higher defensive rank would offset our team’s higher offensive rank, in terms of predicting. I’m curious what makes you so sure that your team has an advantage in scoring efficiency against us. Is it just FootballJesus?

And, I sure hope it is the plan to get after running after we establish the passing game. That has always been our strongest suit.

How relieved are you all that you didn't have to see San Diego to earn your ticket to the Super Bowl?

I wouldn't mind smashing them into the turf.

I wanted to face the Jets because they are a worse team, but I would have loved to cream the Chargers.

Do you think the Colts

Would have beaten them?

And let's put this to rest...

… do you people seriously believe we are worse off if this game turns in a shootout… last I checked we were number one offense by a mile in the first thirteen games.. funny some pundit called Indy the offensive juggernaut the other day… really…

Do you think the pressure is more on the Colts than the Saints

If the Saints lose, they still did better than any Saints team before and the fan base is complete happy with that, a win would of course be a little something extra
If the colts lose, they lose to the Saints and Drew Brees, so I think the pressure is on the Colts

I think the pressure is on the Saints,

because the Colts have been there and done it before. This is the Saints first time and a chance for Brees to join the conversation of great quarterbacks.

Brees had better stats than Manning, who won the MVP award

so no matter what, I think when you throw more Tds, have less Ints, and have a higher (NFL record) completion percentage than the MVP Award winner, it is safe to say you are talked about in terms of being as good or better than any other QBs in the league, bar none.

Joseph Addai

I have heard all about Reggie Wayne being from NOLA, and there’s the obvious ties by Peyton, but has anyone discussed Joseph Addai; the LSU alumnus? His presence really changed the team, and although their stats weren’t there this yr, like you said, they’ve been effective either as a decoy or key short yardage situations.
Has Addai gone unnoticed or am I missing articles about him? Do you expect him to be a difference maker, or if it’s a Colts RB, will it be Brown? (I hate to admit it, but on occasion the Saints had a knack for making average running backs look like game MVPs this yr.)

Finish Strong.

Addai has been very underestimated all year

In the redzone, he’s been a TD machine this year (i think 16 total TDs), and he’s been very effective catching passes out of the backfield.

The thing with addai is that he won’t outrun or overpower anyone, so it’s easy to overlook what he’s down b/c he’s not that flashy. But he is very effective, and better, he’s a perfect fit for the Colts system. He picks up the blitz better than any RB in the NFL, and he has great hands out in the flat. I think both Addai and Brown will get a lot of touches and opportunities to make big plays in this game…if Brown can find some daylight, he’ll be a force. For Addai, I expect him to plod along at 4/5 yards a carry and rack up the first downs.

don’t forget Hart and as of late Session.

picks up the blitz better than any rb in the NFL-

how do you prove or illustrate that? Seems very subjective to me and not sure what stat yo would use to back that up. And Addai picking up 4/5 yds/carry- well why didn’t he do that in the regular season?

The truth is, when you talk about Indy, they are a very good team that faced two pretty bad teams in the playoffs.

Let’s face it, Baltimore sucks. I know they have Ray Lewis, but he’s not anywhere near in his prime. Joe Flacco? Mid to lower tier QB. Ray Rice? Pretty good but not in the top 5 RBs in the nFL and with a weak passing game , he would need toi carry them. I can’r even remember who Balt’s receivers are. The best player on their team, Ed Reed, wasn’t even playing.

The Jets? Come one, look at Sanchez’s stats. he had like 40 Ints- actually in the regular season he had 21 ints and only 12 passing tds. Hardly scary. I know they had a good defense, but that’s basically a QB and a team that is NOT going to the Super Bowl. Most ( Maybe all) Qbs in the history of the NFL that go to the SB have more TDs than Ints- why? Because they are either very good or they protect the ball. Sanchez- not so much on either count. I am not saying he won’t be good, just that he’s not good yet. That was an easy opponent and I was surprised the Colts struggled aginst them so much early on. But, every one, even Rex Ryan, knew eventaully that Manning was so much better than Sanchez that the tide would turn. So, the Colts have not been tested yet in the playoffs. The Saints, on the other hand, just defeated two HOF Qbs, one with the NFC champs and one who had his best season ever and was leader of the NFCs 2nd best offense had the best RB in the NFL. not a Flacco and a Sanchez.

Ed Reed

Played. He intercepted Peyton twice.

The first time Garcon knocked the ball out as Reed was returning the ball.

The second time it was overruled by PI.

Ed Reed owns Peyton. My favorite safety, hands down.

Runner-up: Sean Taylor, RIP.
