And we STILL don't get respect...

How's this for funny.  We prevent Peyton's coronation last night, break or tie several Super Bowl records, win by two scores in a game that we supposedly didn't have any shot in at all... and guess who the odds makers are making the favorite to win next year's Super Bowl?  If you guess the team we just got finished beating, you would be correct.

Worse yet, we're still not even second in the list.  The Chargers, a team who couldn't even make it to the AFC Championship Game, gets second.

Looks like we need a 19-0 season after all if we're ever going to get some respect.

But hey, ain't it nice?  We win the only game that truly matters of the entire season, win the turnover battle, won the points battle, even win the "all-important" TOP battle, are the acknowledged world champions... and we STILL are the underdogs!

How about this?

They did a poll on ESPN asking which QB, Brees or Manning, is more likely to get a 2nd SB ring, and 56% to 20% said Manning. This after Brees threw more TDs than Manning and less its in the regular season, have a better completion % which was an Nfl record, outplayed him in the SB by throwing miore TD passes, less ints and higher completion % (which I think was a record) got the SB MVP award, and had a higher QB rating in SB.. Go figure.

I have a theory about that poll....

It occurred during the morning on the Monday after the Super Bowl. All the Brees supporters were still sleeping after a night of celebrating.

Rec'd it!

Having watched Montana in our division in the golden era of the 49ers there is no way Payton Manning ever comes close to him. Heck he doesn’t even come close to Young IMO.

Double Boom!

Screw the naysayers. We are the frickin’ champions! They can’t take that away from us. Just bask in the moment of this Saintly goodness. Lord knows it took us long enough to finally get here and we have an entire year to enjoy it. If we learned anything this year, it’s that when the “experts” predict guess how we won’t do well, we use it as motivation and get the crucial wins anyway. When they pick against us, we win! Let’s all enjoy the coming year.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

by saintslam on Feb 8, 2010 2:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Do you think

It has to do with teams statistically not making it back to the superbowl the year after they win?

I got the same feeling this afternoon that I did before the Vikings game when I knew they would make it to the superbowl and win. I feel like they won’t be back to the sb next year (although they will have a good year) but they will win another one in the next couple of years, possibly in Indy or the New Orleans (Nola would rock!).

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." - Vince Lombardi

by SarahT on Feb 8, 2010 3:18 PM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

It almost certainly does. But seriously, why the heck would they put INDY first? I mean, they have a 9-9 overall record in the playoffs with Manning, they are just as handicapped as we are in free agency (assuming of course free agency was part of their offseason plans at least), and despite the fact that they have a very good team they haven’t proven they can “finish strong” very much over the last few years. Worse, the super bowl loser has made the playoffs exactly TWICE in the last decade. That’s not gotten back to the super bowl, that’s made the playoffs period. And both times that happened it was the team that lost to the Steelers and it was a team taking advantage of the opportunity to win a relatively weak NFC West. Neither of which describes the Colts.

Had they put the Chargers there, or the Vikings, or the Cowboys, or even the Jets, I would have considered it a bit less insulting to us. But to put the team we just beat in that slot? That I will object to.

by FriarBob on Feb 8, 2010 9:34 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Oh and also over that same decade, I’m about 95% sure the super bowl winner has always at least qualified for the playoffs the next season… with two glaring exceptions. Said exceptions being those same two Steeler teams. That’s got to be an embarrassing stat they’d love to get their name off of. Guess we’ll have to make sure we make the playoffs next year so they can’t.

by FriarBob on Feb 8, 2010 9:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

44 years of SB and

odds are the teams don’t get back and win it 2 years in a row. Thats all it is and plus anything can happen next year. All the teams are so close. 3-13 teams can jump to playoff teams, good teams like the Steelers can drop from SB champs to non playoffs. 8-8 teams can go from non playoff team to SB champs. You just have to be realistic and not biased. Schedules change and get harder (well not your division) but for the most part you finish higher and play harder schedules the next year. It all plays out and the odds become against you in some way. You won this year and thats the most important thing. No need to try and amp up the we get no respect or the sympathy play. You’re the SB champs , so you’re on top, now all the teams will gun for you next year. Its a different view and one you should all like and appreciate :)

you obviously are biased but

the NFC East is a tough division and hard to win. All sports fans know this. Funny though out of all the things I wrote that is the one thing you single out. Sad but true. Your division was weak this year , its a realist point of view.

I have no patience for smug Cowboy fans

Guess what you beat us this year and so did Tampa Bay so your team was as good as Tampa bay congrats
We were 3-1 against the NFC east and i believe the rest of our div. did well also so who had the week div.

by mississippisaintsfan on Feb 8, 2010 5:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Everyone is biased to some degree but I get your point.

Teams repeat as Super Bowl winners around 20% of the time. Any odds maker that overlooked that fact wouldn’t stay in business very long.

What you have to understand however is that Saints fans have been disrespected for so long that we almost enjoy it in a perverse sort of way. Just as Cowboy fans take a sort of perverse pride in being either loved or hated.

This fact was certainly reinforced by the large number of “experts” that reported how we didn’t win the NFC Championship as much as the Vikings lost it. Nor the fact that just about every one of these same people picked a Colts victory to the point that actually playing the game was nothing more than a formality. Personally, I’ve only seen or heard of two sports analysts allude to that scenario regarding our Super Bowl win. One is Steve Mariucci (the former coach no one will hire) and the other is Skip Bayliss (sp?) who’s only niche in the sports world is intentionally pissing people off. So, the Saints lack of respect prejudice appears to be slowly subsiding.

Just about every fan thinks their team doesn’t get the rspect it deserves. I’ve seen this same sentiment on occassion when visiting over at Blogging The Boys so I’m sure you’ve seen it over there also. I’ll agree that a lot of Saints fans are more sensitive than most, but we’ve had a lot of practice at it. Bottom line is that it’s going to take more than 24 hours after our first Championship to get over it.

by Drew-Dat on Feb 8, 2010 6:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Let me ask you this

How many Super Bowls did the NFC East play in this past decade? How many did they win? Same two questions for the NFC South, then tell me which is the clearly superior division.

most people don't seem to get this

Manning had a nearly 90 passer rating but ask any regular person and he “choked”. That is no respect for Porter, who made a great gamble and play to take that int to the house.

Figured this would happen

Sportswriters and reporters tend to really overreact to things when they end up being dead wrong about a prediction. I’m not sure if it’s bitterness over being wrong, a need to justify it, or just a way to generate stories, but I pretty much knew that the Manning as choke artist stories would come out of the woodwork. Though he did have twice as many incompletions as Brees, he was only one completion shy of tying the Superbowl record himself. One interception and the guy goes from “best ever” to choke artist. He played a good game for the most part. The throw that resulted in the INT wasn’t even really a mistake. It’s a high percentage play that they used all year to pick up first downs. Porter deserves all the credit in the world for recognizing it. But it’s not nearly as inflammatory to say Porter made a wonderful play. Internet news currency is measured in hits, and I guess they’re willing to generate them by any means, even if it’s just glorified trolling and name-calling.

I couldn’t participate in the live thread because I was watching the game on one of the military bases. The game ended here at about 12:30 and I didn’t get home till about 6:00 that night. I like the fact

That for all the goodwill the Saints win generated, no one is really taking us seriously from a purely football standpoint still. You have to think that’ll be an excellent motivational tool for the team next season. I like the idea that they will not get complacent, and can still use that “us against the world” angle.

Maybe after we get a second SB, but even then... I don't know.

True story: I was watching pre-game with my mom. (She’s 71, and doesn’t really care much for football… but loves New Orleans.)

They had segment after segment of Colts info… then, when they had a “Saints related” segment, it was Peyton Manning talking about the Saints and what they mean to his dad and the city.

My mom says, “When are they gonna talk about the Saints?”

I said, “No idea. I wouldn’t be surprised if they talk about the Colts until the game started.”

She says, “Well that’s horrible. They should lose the game just for that.”

How right she was!
.

Seriously… I don;t expect us to get any respect from MSM anytime soon. And, I kinda like it that way.

Sure, it pi$$es me off to know end to hear “25th ranked defense”; but… I kinda like that we’re constantly underestimated.

Yes, I want my boys to get the credit they rightfully deserve, but I LOVE IT when we shock the MSM and make them look like idiots.

Really I am kind of liking

being the underdog. I started thinking maybe people won’t see us like that now and then it hit me that I like being seen that way.

I also realized I have crossed over into using 1st person narrative when talking about the Saints. A guy on a local radio show here always made fun of his boss for doing that with the Stars. He would tell his boss "why do you keep saying “we” like you are actually part of the team"? Haha now I am that person.

Enjoy the underdog role, NO fans

The Colts were in that role all… year… long. Any of you remember all the “window has closed” talk about the Colts because we had coaching changes, lost Marvin Harrison, then the early injuries? I watched as, week after flippin’ week, all the “experts” declared we would lose. I think Deion Sanders picked the RAMS to beat us. I know he picked every other team to do so… every… single… week. And then guess what? Every… single… week… we won (well, when we tried – ugh!).

But I was nervous as HELL (and for good reason) when we were declared the favorites in the SB. I hated it. I wanted Deion to be preaching to the world that the Saints were going to crush the Colts, that Peyton would collapse and throw 8 picks, that the D wasn’t aggressive, etc. Unfortunately, they went all reverse jinx on us and look what happened….

How can you not love a team that does this?
