Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

too soon?...(draft talk)...

Is it too soon for draft talk? Well I don't care, i can't really party right now. (deployed in the middle east) so I have nothing better to do but post about the draft. BUT first...WHAT A F'n SUPERBOWL! I LOVED IT! my heart spiked when we kicked that onside kick, and resuscitated itself when Chris Reis came up with that ball. I was in the activity center watching the game with a couple colts fans near by, they left right after Tracy Porter's INT...I loved it, cherished the moment when the other team even knew "it was over". But yeah...man what an awesome moment in my life. Ok...on to the draft eh? So what do you think we'll do in the draft this year? We definitely are NOT used to having the dead last pick in the 1st round.  Currently we have 6 draft slots (1-4th and 6-7th round picks) which is 3 more than we had last year, so we have a whole lot more to work with.

Here's a a few of our past year's drafts: (* notable play time/impact)

2009
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 14 Malcolm Jenkins * DB Ohio State
4 116 Chip Vaughn SAF Wake Forest
4 118 Stanley Arnoux ILB Wake Forest
5 164 Thomas Morstead * P Southern Methodist
2008
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 7 Sedrick Ellis * DT USC
2 40 Tracy Porter * CB Indiana
5 144 DeMario Pressley DT North Carolina State
5 164 Carl Nicks * G Nebraska
6 178 Taylor Mehlhaff K Wisconsin
7 237 Adrian Arrington WR Michigan
2007
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 27 Robert Meachem * WR Tennessee
3 66 Usama Young * CB Kent State
3 88 Andy Alleman G Akron
4 107 Antonio Pittman RB Ohio State
4 125 Jermon Bushrod * T Towson
5 145 David Jones CB Wingate
7 220 Marvin Mitchell * LB Tennessee
2006
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 2 Reggie Bush * RB USC
2 43 Roman Harper * SS Alabama
4 108 Jahri Evans * G Bloomsburg
5 135 Rob Ninkovich DE Purdue
6 171 Mike Hass WR Oregon State
6 174 Josh Lay CB Pittsburgh
7 210 Zach Strief * T Northwestern
7 252 Marques Colston * WR Hofstra

That's 14 out of 25 draft picks over the past 4 drafts have made some sort of impact, and actually are still on the team. And that's not including 2 of our picks last year who were both on IR I think.  That alone shows how great our scouts are. So every pick in this draft can have a major impact on our team. What do you think we need this year? Who's not gonna be here next year also?  I don't know how much longer we'll have Charles Grant, so going with a young DE towards the end of the first round wouldn't be a bad idea.  What are some of your ideas for this year's draft strategy?

It's never too soon...

Tracy Porter and Morstead were drafted by the Saints! Also, that 5th rounder we don’t have – that pick was used on Morstead. At the time, I was pissed. I was wrong – wouldn’t trade it for anything! Looking for somebody in the front 7 with the 1st pick

I think Arnoux has a very distinct possibility of becoming the upgrade for Shanle/Fujita that certain people here have been screaming for forever. Could be wrong, but I think there’s a good chance of it.

So my vote is DE.

by FriarBob on Feb 9, 2010 7:43 AM CST reply actions

Since we don’t know what we’ve got in Arnoux, OLB is still a high priority that can be effectively addressed late in the first, but DT or LDE is right up there, maybe more important now. Pretty much the entire draft should be for the defensive front 7. If there’s a road grader running back of apparent great value, that’d be very nice, too. A late round QB would round out the wish list.

Think about the Tebow thing

I am a Who Dat from way back living in Florida at the moment. I don’t think wasting a first round pick on Tebow would be wise. If he were available in the second, maybe. The reasons I think he would work are the following:
1) He has an unquestionable work ethic. We need to begin thinking about someone to eventually take his place. I like Brunell, but he isn’t that guy. He will work just as hard as Drew to learn. He is an excellent student of the game.
2) He performed and excelled in Urban Myers offense. He was asked, unfairly I believe, to go to the Senior Bowl and learn a spread offense in 2 weeks and perform up to everyone’s expectations.
3) He has the size and good hands that we need.
4) Even with all of his “faults”, he is a natural leader.
Think about this for a minute. We need to find a suitable understudy for Brees that doesn’t mind the work and won’t mind playing back-up to the greatest QB in the NFL right now. Tebow is not saying he wants to come out and start for an NFL teram, only that he wants the opportunity. What better teacher for someone who is willing to put in the work. He can also put in time as a big TE to compliment Shockey. Throw in an occasional Wildcat play and you have someone who can get those extra yards just as effectively as a big fullback.
The other thing is, his celebrity would help bring more attention to the rebuilding of our hometown. He is known for his selflessness and his unwavering commitment to helping people around him.
Think about it, nobody gave New Orleans a chance. Nobody wanted Drew Brees. Now, nobody wants to take a chance on Tebow. Could be a match made by a higher power.
 Stranger things have happenened recently.

OLB

Navarro Bowman would be a great pickup since Fujita might not come back? I hightly doubt he will go anywhere else but Bowman would be a great pickup….tons of upside.

by Saintsfan4life on Feb 9, 2010 9:47 AM CST reply actions

OLB or DE

OLB: Navarro Bowman (definitely an upgrade over Fujita and Shanle, everyone here saw Shanle getting constantly burnt by Dallas Clark in SB44)..
Sean Weatherspoon (upgrade)
I saw some mock drafts that had Sergio Kindle going in the 3rd round, I doubt he’ll slip that much..

Draft Taylor Mays and have him play OLB………….

…But seriously, DE candidates are Everson Griffen, USC (we tend to always draft guys from there)
Carlos Dunlap, Corey Wooton

by AKAY47 on Feb 9, 2010 9:58 AM CST reply actions

Lets be fair to Shanle

I mean Dallas Clark makes a lot of good NFL linebackers look slow you don’t get 100 receptions at tight end unless you are one heck of an athlete.

by icarus on Feb 9, 2010 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

agreed... Clark is a beast! He makes nickle backs look slow.

Shanle showed up at key times.

Is he perfect? No. But when it REALLY mattered, he showed up.

We need capable CB backups.

Our blitzing style of defense needs good CB’s. We saw what happened when JG and TP went out.

The fact that we found two guys on the street who could step in and play ONE great game, in extremely unlikely to happen again, ever.

I’m not saying we need a CB with the 32nd pick, but I think it’s really important to have depth at that position. MJ will be better. Gay, I’m not so sure. UY is not a CB, and shouldn’t be forced to play that position.

We have a couple LB backups and on practice squad that make be able to step up and play next year.

Do we have that same depth at CB?

you need some DLinemen to rotate so yoyu always have fresh pass rushers

so you are still getting a consistent pass rush even late in games

DL or LB

Defensive front 7 early and often. CB’s late. OL we can P/U one in the draft and some as FA’s. Look whta we got from Evans.

Imagine Peyton as a kid in Nawlins, always dreaming of throwing the winning TD in da SB for da Saints, well Sunday, he finally did it!!!!!!

by Big Bru on Feb 9, 2010 7:13 PM CST reply actions

Big needs, IMO

Arnoux and Vaughn are not proven yet, but could be diamonds.

That being said, I listed positions in order of most to least important below:

OLB – we need someone with sideline to sideline speed. A guy with a great motor/burst off the line who can get pressure on the QB.

Pass rushing end – This is a big, big need. Grant played for his contract, but since then he’s lain back and played soft. Perhaps it was due to injury – I’m not going to speculate. I can only go by the results he’s produced, and those results are not good. Next up, please.

Safety – You know it and I know it. Sharper is amazing, but he’s not ageless. We need to bring in a solid cover safety immediately and have Sharper finish out his career as a Saint whilst nurturing his eventual replacement.

DT – Lord knows we’re weak here. We get great penetrating and pressure on the quarterback, but all too often the d-line has been susceptible to the run. This should be addressed. To think, I had such high hopes for Demario. =/

We could also look into getting another QB (Brunell is on his way out and I’m not supremely confident in having only one backup to Drew. Another voice/mind to provide input on the sideline can provide a boost, albeit small.) More depth at tackle would be a welcome addition as well.

"I definitely believe in destiny, and I believe in karma and what goes around comes around. We have been on the other side of this deal probably too many times. Maybe it's our time that we start catching some of the breaks, and start being the team that wins them like this in the end." -- Drew Brees

by J of the F on Feb 9, 2010 8:34 PM CST reply actions

I would like to see us trade Grant for a decent 1st round pick

I would think we could get a middle 1st round pick for Grant in a trade which would also allow us to sign a top DE in free agency and give our staff another young first round player on defense. I think it would be great to get a big run stuffing DT and a nice speedy LB as well with the 2 first round picks.

Only reason I am thinking trading for draft picks is how well we have done lately with picks. If we can also pick up a stud pass rusher and a couple back up CBs with Williams coaching them up we could become a dominating front seven to compliment our great secondary. When we start stuffing the run and getting even more pressure from the D line Greg Williams defensive will be scary good. Combine that with our offense and we are talking repeat!!!!!

WHO DAT!!!!!

by icarus on Feb 10, 2010 11:38 PM CST reply actions

lulz

Not happening. We couldn’t get a 3rd rounder for Grant at this point.

as long as we're talkin crazy

I’d trade our 1st round pick (32) and Grant to move up in the 1st round to draft TE Jermaine Gresham. Won’t happen, but the way we use TEs and the lack of depth (Darnell Dinkins? really??) coupled with the fact Shockey can’t have THAT much more gas in the tank means Gresham would be perfect for our offense. He’s pretty freakin awesome, too.

by jful on Feb 11, 2010 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

We've got...

Shockey, Thomas, Miller, Campbell, Dinkins, Humphrey, and a TE on the practice squad.

I’m not sure they’re gonna go TE in the first few rounds this year.

Free Agency 2010

Seen the new rules for the 2010 season? Since we’ve finished among the top eight playoff teams, (hoo-f’in-ray!), we can only acquire a free agent after loosing a “top performer,” whatever that is defined as.

If I’m not mistaken, that is…

by BRSaintsFan on Feb 11, 2010 11:13 AM CST reply actions

yeah

I also heard that it has to be at that position that you lost that player too…but I’m not sure how accurate my statement is.
