I didn't see his 40 time, but Witherspoon looks like a BEAST!

He is a “physical specimen” for sure!

Uh oh. Before this point I didn’t realize I could watch the combine for free… we’re all in trouble now… of me falling asleep…

For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.

ALERT: Bottom scroll says "Thomas Jones to be released on March 5th."

If you think we need to sign another RB, he’d be the top free agent.

way too many dollar for him…

NOW you’re just messing with me.

The budget is merely a concept. There is no cap. There is no artificial, arbitrary limit. If we need a guy, we get the guy. Get him cheap if you can, but if you have to have him, get him.

They will never say “We would have liked to have signed player X, but we just couldn’t afford him.”

Is this what you want? Or what you think the team will do? Because I don’t think the Saints are just gonna throw money around. They’ve said they’re gonna work with a cap in mind.

What I want is for guys to stop saying it is too much for this or that player. Without the cap, there is no basis for that comment. The Saints can’t run into cap trouble because there is no cap.

I don’t think they’ll throw money around, either. But if PayLoo feel like they HAVE to have a guy, I’m pretty sure Mickey will go hat in hand and ask TomRita for the extra $2M to $5M they hadn’t planned to spend this year. The sky is not really the limit, I’ve exaggerated that. The limit is very flexible though, I believe.

That GDub gambit (“I’ll pay the excess out of my own salary!”) really bought them some credibility with Tom Benson.

Tell me the truth.
Are you the secret identity of Jesus1000?
That post you did the other day where you said you “summoned him” blew my mind. I read it way late so i couldn’t determine if you were joking or the time frame.
If you have been J1000 all along, I’m going to give you a standing ovation.

Honest to Christ (as a former boss used to say), I am not Jesus1000. Saintsational Dave can verify the IP addresses on the posts.

I can’t summon him. He just shows up.

Oh well

It would be pure genius if you were.

the problem is that it is too much or too little for a player

just because there is not a cap in 2010, it is only going to be 2010. unless you’re saying that a player of thomas jones’ calliber is going to take a one year deal, you’re wrong. the organizations must still work with a cap in mind, because the salary cap is going to return – just not in 2010

You seem to fear the salary cap, perhaps because you do not understand it. I do not understand the salary cap, but I do not fear it. If the Saints sign Darren Sharper to a 3 year 12$ contract, $4M each year for 2010, 2011, 2012, and the NFL and the CBA sign a new salary cap agreement for 5 years starting in 2011, how much do you think Sharper is going to count against the cap? I doubt that, in this scenario, the Saints would get into any cap trouble. Same with Thomas Jones with the numbers tweaked a bit.

You can’t make roster decisions for 2010 in fear of what the unstated terms of a future salary cap agreement might be. It might cost you Super Bowl 45.

I do not understand the salary cap, but I do not fear it.

Teh top brass do not “fear” it either, but they understand it. And they know that if they over extend themselves this year (even if they have the money) they will VERY likely be forced to cut several good players the next year…

Which would destroy any thoughts of a dynasty… especially since we’re already near the top of the salary range.

Sure, we might have a better chance to win this coming SB, but it would kill our chances at the next one and the next one after that.

Quick example:

We sing J. Peppers and T. Jones, and Adalius Thomas (wouldn’t that be freakin’ awesome) and we sign them to deals which put us over the salary cap in 2011 by $20mil.

A. Which players do you now drop?

B. When you drop those players there will be “cap penalties” which will “count against the cap” in that same year… so, instead of having the cap at $100mil (the cap without penalties) our would be $85mil…

So, you need to drop EVEN MORE players just to stay under the cap.

.
You don’t have to “fear it”, but you MUST plan for it.

Now now..

Just because Sean Weatherspoon is a physical specimen doesn’t mean he will be a great player. Look at Vernon Gholston. ’Nuff said
