What is the big-to-do about Sharper--but not Fujita?
How many people actually believe that Sharper won't be a Saint next year?
Honestly, I'm having a somewhat difficult time believing in the rumors / bad hype that Sharper won't be a Saint next year. The guy had a great season, and, even though he's old, he is still valuable as a player and as a mentor (helping the rest of the secondary get in position, both before games and before snaps). Not to mention that he's a future HOFer who had one of his best seasons last year with THREE TDs on defense.
Compare this to Fujita, who I think was more than a solid LB last year, and there seems to be a disconnect. Almost everyone expects that Fujita will be a Saint next year, and rightly so--he was better than your average outside linebacker. But he's no HOFer, and it would be pretty damned difficult to argue that he's one of the top 5 players at his position.
But Sharper, who some people speculate won't be a Saint next year, was in the running for Defensive Player of the Year...then our corners got hurt and he couldn't be as aggressive. Even so, he had one hell of a year and easily could be argued to be a top 5 player--or better. But all of the sudden, people are talking about how he's going to leave or how the Saints won't give him a good enough offer for him to stay, or whatnot like that. I know he's getting old, but so is Fujita. No way the Saints would let a guy that good go, especially when we cannot sign any respectable veteran players (without trading). At the very least, I think Gregg Williams (and SP) would object and push Loomis to get a deal done.
I think it makes no sense and that the Saints are just taking their time on this--they're trying to evaluate talent for the draft, get other deals done, and they're probably still slightly hungover like the rest of us.
Does anyone disagree?

I think the situation with Sharper is simply this:
The Saints want him to return. They will let the free market determine his value, rather than the Franchise Tag determine his value. It is a great buisness move. Sharper’s value will be less on the free market, and the Saints will end up giving him the most money to stay, and that eventual dollar amount will be less than the Franchise Tag amount. Win Win situation.

meanwhile, don't believe anything either side says
and while hoping for the best…don’t be too shocked if some team pays very highly for him and we don’t match it

I hear that the Bears...
are interested. Why would a team like the Bears, who run a cover two system like the Vikes want Sharper. Sharper’s strength is in playing center field…
Colts fans are officially the worst sore losers and their home is Stampede Blue. Don't laugh Vikings fans... you're a close second!
The question real is
why would Sharper, who languished on the Vikings, and won a Super Bowl with the Saints, want to return to the same sort of situation in Chicago that he suffered through in the Metrodome?

I think so too
…and as far as a megabuck payday: good luck with that. He had a good season on a Super Bowl team, but he’s still 35 this year, and he has lost a step. If the fans who love him know that, it’s a safe bet that every front office in the NFL is aware of those facts as well. No team wants to be the one to pay him his Super Bowl bonus money, if they don’t get a Lombardi out of the deal.

In the end it's all business.

These people
players’coachs, management did win us a super bowl. I can’t help but believe they have everything under control. But its difficult not to stress after all these years. But ya got to love the position we are in.

Well that was different. They offered the contract so late because they HAD to, not because they wanted it. It was part of the terms of the trade with the Jets. If they had started the negotiations too early they would have actually had to give up their FIRST round pick instead of their third. Vilma’s valuable but he’s not quite THAT valuable.

fujita is 31
sharper is 35. very big difference in football years when talking long term contract.
