Saints Meeting with Free Agents Little, Hall and Kemoeatu

The Saints have reportedly scheduled visits with two St. Louis Rams defensive ends, Leonard Little and James Hall. Little is expected to be in town today to meet with the team and Hall will be visiting sometime this week.

The Times-Pic also reported yesterday that former Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu might also be checking in for a look-see, possibly as a backup plan if Jamal Williams doesn't work out. Kemoeatu missed all of 2009 with a torn Achilles suffered during training camp. Since Williams signed with Denver yesterday, the Kemoeatu visit seems more likely now.

If the Saints really like either one of these guys, we could be hearing of a signing as early as today, though I don't foresee that happening.

So far the team has only defensive lineman on the unrestricted free agent docket of visits, and with the recent offer made to Jeff Charleston yesterday, we might surmise that the Saints are definitely going to draft a linebacker with their first round pick in this years draft.

After the jump I've compiled just some brief personal and statistical information (from 2009) on each of these players as well as their salary last year. All three of these players could easily be signed to a contract equal to or less than the one Scott Fujita inked with the Browns, as the new CBA rules dictate.

So what are you guys thinking?

I'm not sure which of these guys I like best

I guess whoever’s the best combination (in the Saints eyes) of healthy/youthful/able to contribute the most to our DL…

Kemo could be a good value

Although injury issues could be troubling. The guy tore his achilles like the first day of training camp last year. That has to say something about his offseason conditioning. But he is a huge man, that’s for sure. If we could get him to take up a lot of space in the middle and let Hargrove trim a few lbs to play DE then I think we might have something.

Kemo would work with me

But then again, Little could be a good fit. It just depends on who is willing to sign for what and what condition they are in physically. If Kemo is back from his injury 100%, then I would take him over any of the rest of them.

Achilles tears are bad news

I’ve been worried about Arnoux, and whether or not he’ll make a complete recovery. Same goes for Kemoeatu…except that we don’t have to worry until we sign him.

But yeah, if he makes a complete recovery, he’s a good space-eater. Might free up Sedrick Ellis to make some plays. Couldn’t hurt. But I worry that if we sign him, the front office may think “we’ve got that tackle thing solved,” and then it turns out not to be.

I'm liking Hall

rotoworld.com:

Free agent DE James Hall has a visit planned with the Saints on Thursday.
The Rams expressed a desire to bring Hall back, but it could be hard to turn down the Super Bowl champs. Hall, 33, has 11 sacks in his last 30 games. He’d be part of the rotation filling Charles Grant’s void in New Orleans.

Little confused

Were these players released by their team?

I did not think we could sign any FA.

by jeremysherwin on Mar 10, 2010 9:53 AM CST reply actions

We can

Because Scott Fujita was signed by the Browns. Its kind of like a “lose a player, sign a player” system.

But the new player's contract

cannot exceed the value of the contract signed by the player lost. That limits who we will be able to sign.

what about

adewale ogunleye? why haven’t we expresed any interest in him? he’s as good a pass-rusher as jeff charleston, for sure, and younger than most of the guys left on the market.

by jful on Mar 10, 2010 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Ogunleye made $4.7M last year and wants a raise, at age 33.

Saints signed Charleston for $1.1M and he’s only 27.

C’mon man, quit throwing money around. It might be an uncapped year but the Saints still have a budget and by Godfrey they’re going to stick to it. (Hi, Dan!)

well

that’s a pretty good reason. still, we have to replace at least 2 starters on defense, so we may have to overspend a little bit given the crappy free agent market.

Yes

Yes it is. There are plenty of DE’s, DT’s and LB’s to go around this year, especially given that there are so many teams looking to the offensive side of the ball, and more than one team trying to address its QB failures.

Did you hear the news?

Grant now wants to play us twice a year by going to the Falcons or the Panthers.

I think we should wish for him to do so. Then maybe we’ll get to abuse him instead of be abused by him.

I voted for Kemo. Kemo occasionally cures breast cancer, which means they wouldn’t have to wear those fruity pink cleats quite as often.
