Derek Anderson as backup QB?
I haven't seen anyone else mention this possibility, so... Derek Anderson was just released by Cleveland. I know this guy was pretty bad for the last couple of years but he had one very good year (07), he's only 26, he probably wouldn't break the bank, and most importantly- because he was released by Cleveland (not a UFA for 2010) he won't count as a UFA pickup for us under the new rules. Whaddaya think?

Don't the Saints play in Cleveland next year?
Could be amuzing just to sign him so we could send him out when we have the game wrapped up with a win so we wouldn’t mind the 15 yard penalty he will surely get in settling his business with the dog pound.
Other than that I’m not sure how much use we would have for him. We tried a reclamation project in Joey Harrington and that didn’t really pan out.

I think the guy is worth a shot
He’s got to be better than Brunnel, and is more experienced than Daniels. I don’t see how having him in camp to compete for the backup spot could hurt.
Also, am I the only one that thinks that we should be proactive in getting LaDanian Tomlinson? I’d rather have that guy sitting on our bench than behind the line of scrimmage for teams like Minnesota and Atlanta.

i like him too
i think he might get some looks from teams with a real competition for the starting spot. i def like him more than that clown brady quinn, medicine woman.
Yes, Sean Payton is the new Zorro. He leads wild adventures, quaffs the finest wines, embarrasses his enemies and leaves a extravagant calling card in his wake. Try as you might to stop him, but he's always one sip ahead.

He was only good when he was playing bad teams and he had no pressure on him as he was assumed to be just giving Quinn time to get ready to take over.
After that, he stunk up the joint.
Then again, anybody playing for those Cleveland teams probably would as well. Maybe even Drew. So I’m not quite as opposed as you, but I’m highly skeptical he could really help.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
How does he handle pressure?
Failure can be attributed to a lack of surrounding talent; but the important variable is always, how does he handle pressure? Drew handles pressure well, and has succeeded at every level—not because he’s the strongest, or the fastest, but because he processes information quickly and makes good decisions.
This is not a rhetorical question: I haven’t paid much attention to the Browns at all, let alone Anderson in particular. But his huge interception rate suggests he can’t handle pressure well.

Derek had absolutely no offensive line at Cleveland
When you’re on your rear more than in the pocket, there’s going to be a problem with your overall performance.
Just ask Joey Harrington or David Carr.
"There are those that make it happen, those that watch it happen, and those that stand around and wonder what the hell happened." -- Drew Brees
Actually, I wouldn’t agree with that. He had no RIGHT side of his OL. His left side was pretty decent.
Probably part of the problem, he could see the collapse coming right in his face.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
The better question is:
Who else is available as a veteran backup QB that has had any playing time or shred of success as an NFL QB and isn’t as ancient as Brunell and Garcia? Anderson has to top that list.
All we are looking to do is upgrade our backup QB. All the pressure is on us. We’ve been riding the lightning too long.

Bruce Gradkowski might be a nice option. Extremely low interception percentage. I think he still holds the NCAA record for highest career passing percentage. He was also Lance Moore’s pitchman at Toledo and looked pretty good against the Saints in a relief role with the Bucs a couple of years back. He’s expected to re-sign with the Raiders, but is currently a free agent. Coming off two partial MCL tears (one in each knee), but that’s really not all that serious of an injury.

Bruce really thinks he’s going to start for the Raiders in 2010.

Shaun Hill, Shaun Hill, Shaun Hill, Shaun Hill
As far as Anderson goes, we tossed it around in M-E’s fanshot here
Payton is a head coach. He doesn’t have time available to put in showing Chase Daniel and Derek Anderson how to be a real NFL quarterback. “Chase! GAAA!!! What did I JUST TELL YOU about your feet? Do it again… Jesus1000!….” So who does this? Who “coaches them up”? Joe Lombardi, Saints QB coach?
Whoever that guy is, I’d let him decide: Who can we more easily coach up? Derek Anderson or Shaun Hill? Or is Chase developing enough that Lance Moore can be our QB3 as he has been in the past? Questions….

So much for home-schoolin’. RT @edgarthompson T.Tebow scored a 22 on Wonderlic, Clausen 23, McCoy 25 & Bradford 36 out of 50, per source.
It seems that perhaps Tim Tebow did not say his prayers adequately prior to sitting for the exam. NFL QB wonderlic average = 24 Vince Young=6, Dan Marino =13 (or 15 according to revisionists)

Why, what a perfectly objective comment by a fine, upstanding journalist. Jeff, you do know, don’t you, that home-schooled kids are still going to display differences in innate intelligence? Maybe, just maybe, Tebow’s score can be attributed to something other than being home schooled. Nice cheap shot.
"Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.." --J.O.L.
I enjoyed it
He got Clausen (Oaks Christian High School). Maybe there was an evolution question on the wonderlic test. No explanation for McCoy except that he’s from Texas.
She's' been around, but she's young and clean
Well
…Tebow is from an SEC institution, after all.
"Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.." --J.O.L.
that's a low blow on the Texas comment
Say what you want about Vince (hard to imagine anyone getting a 6 on that test, but after the Rose bowl, he’ll always be football Jesus to me) but Colt, by all accounts, is a really smart kid and has a high football IQ.

"But tonight the Superbowl belongs to the City of New Orleans" - Roger Goodell 2/7/2010
Kind of a small sample size....
But I kind of doubt that proving something is the point here. These scores, with the exception of Bradford, are all pretty average for quarterbacks. The difference between a 22 and a 25 is almost nothing as far as football ability is concerned.
Basically the only purpose the Wonderlic serves is to give teams some idea on whether or not a prospect has the mental capacity to learn a NFL system, or if it may take some people coughvinceyoungcough a few years to be able to grasp some concepts.

true, but I still enjoyed it

I think Shutdown Corner has it right (surprisingly)
I think it’s mostly because people like to believe that they’re smarter than athletes.
But Brunell is a darn good holder for place kicks...
I must have watched the slow motion of Hartley’s kick vs. the Vikings 100 times….
Derek Anderson wants to be a starter in this league, he's going to sign in Arizona and compete with Leinart for the job
We can draft a QB in the later rounds and have Drew take them under his wing. Chase Daniel could be that guy, he’s too small though
I don't think Chase has the right stuff.
He’s ok as a place holder until another QB comes along, but he showed a propensity to make his worst mistakes on the biggest stage in college.
"But tonight the Superbowl belongs to the City of New Orleans" - Roger Goodell 2/7/2010
At least he did enough to get to the stage. It’s not like Peyton Manning faired any better in big games at the college level.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
debatable
yes Peyton annually folded against Florida, but folding against Florida and folding against Kansas are two different things.
"But tonight the Superbowl belongs to the City of New Orleans" - Roger Goodell 2/7/2010
That's right. Every time Chase played in a big game, he folded.
OU ate him up in both Big 12 championship games. He looked good against Big 12 north teams (ho hum) but against the south? Not so much. I remember Chase pouting on the sidelines after another INT. Priceless.
"Don't ever sell your saddle, cause life's a long, long ride."
That's not really gonna help much
We need a guy who can come in on day one and manage a game or two if Drew goes down temporarily.
That’s going to require veteran experience.
We can draft a QB in the later rounds and have Drew take them under his wing
That won’t help immediately.

Tyler Lorenzen
I wonder if the Saints are even considering him as a QB prospect. He’s still under contract, as far as I know. Assuming Thomas and Miller both return, I can’t imagine him making the final roster as a TE. He might have a better shot of beating out Daniel for QB3.

Lance Moore over as the Back-up instead.
He already knows the system.
He knows how the routes will be run.
I Bet he is a better holder than Brunell.
