Jake Delhomme and the Saints are a perfect fit at this stage of his career. He would be an excellent backup to Brees.

Well if this happens

I will have to break out the hockey helmet for any games where Delhomme plays. I foresee a lot of time spent banging my head against the wall after hearing “Unbelievable, Delhomme has thrown another pick”

Not only that. But was John Thomas involved?

Thanks....

But no thanks. I would like to see the front office move forward with a younger backup. For example, drafting McCoy, Lefevour, etc. or just stick with Chase. He is better than Delhomme in my opinion.

We need to focus on strengthening our group of linebackers.

if we use a 3rd rounder on a QB, I'll be pissed.

we need to add players that can play now while Brees is at his best.

don't waste a pick on QB

Brees is in his prime, and will still be a pro-bowler by the time a mid-round draft pick’s second contract is up. We need a vet backup who can spot start and a undrafted project (like Daniel, but I think we can do better). Delhomme has looked lost for the last season, but there’s no way Daniel is better. Delhomme has been led teams to the superbowl and lest we forget had his team in the playoffs 2 seasons ago season before imploding. Signing Jake seems like the perfect fit for us.

Agreed, Bevo

With few exceptions, we don’t have needs on offense. Draft picks should be used to beef up the vastly improved defense. Think about what GW can do with some nice young studs in key spots. Chase Daniels is a great young prospect to have for development (although I enjoyed watching him get eaten by OU in the Big 12 championships). Jake was having problems recently but that sounds an awful lot like another free agent acquisition. Remember how Darren Sharper was playing before he came to New Orleans?

I disagree

With Jakes problems being related to anyone other than Jake. When you have Steve Smith on one side and Mohammed (I bet I butchered that) on the other side, plus you have De’Angelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in your back field, there is no reason to commit THAT many errors to that many teams. Maybe Jake suffered from “the shakes” (refrence to Tin Cup). If so, hire Cheech Marin to be his QB Caddy.

I would

Rather have Cheech Marin as my back up QB instead of Delhomme. OK, so I know that is actually a bit of a stretch, even for me to say, I will take it back. Well, mostly.

In addition to the Browns and Saints, free agent Jake Delhomme is also expected to visit the Packers and Broncos.
The Packers could use a veteran to battle Matt Flynn for the No. 2, and Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy coached Delhomme in Carolina as QBs coach and passing game coordinator.

You have to think

That if he gets to choose, an offensive genius like SP is much more attractive to be around. Plus the thought of potentially having the chance to stick it to his old team may make him take a NFC South discount. Wait a minute. I am making an argument for him coming here. If you are reading this Jake, disregard all of my comments.

Agreed

Plus, he’s a southern boy. Would he really want to play in the frigid cold of Green Bay? Maybe, but he hasn’t played for a cold weather team yet, at least not at the pro level. The Broncos have little Napoleon coaching them. I wouldn’t want to play for that guy. And the Browns….well, surely I don’t need to list the problems there.

At the end of the day, though, I’m sure he’d rather go play for a team that will give him a chance to win the starting job. That ain’t gonna happen in NOLA.

Chase will get the #2 spot when Sean thinks he's good enough.

SP has made all the right personnel decisions. When Chase is ready, he’ll be #2. Not a minute before. Delhomme is a lot better backup than Brunnell. I’ve liked Brunnell since his rookie season. But he’s past being useful, except as a holder, and that’s not a good enough reason to keep him.

I'm thrilled, actually . . .

He had one AWFUL year, but he’s had a lot more AWESOME years. Chilling behind Drew would give him a chance to break out of his mental thing and getting another chance one day he could light it up. I have a lot more confidence in that than Brunell doing likewise.

I'm not opposed to it at all

But I really don’t see it happening. They are talking about him alot here in Denver, and honestly, if he signed with the Broncos it is very likely he would win the #1 spot over Kyle Orton.

I’ve always thought well of Jake, he’s a winner, he wants to win. Regardless of how alluring sitting behind Drew Brees and playing for Sean Payton may be. He’ll go where he can start. I think it’s going to be Denver.

That makes sense. Why should he accept the backup job in Cleveland when he can play the same role closer to home (New Orleans) or in his former quarterback coach’s offense (Denver)?

NOOOOOOOO

Sorry, but even though I have been a Delhomme fan since he backed up Brooks, even I have to say no. The people wanting Jake Delhomme on the Saints are the fans that remembered him as a better option to Brooks. That is definitely not the case now, and I am not nostalgic to see him back in the Black and Gold. Brunell is horrible, and we know it, Delhomme is terrible and we know it, but HE is from Breaux Bridge, HE is a Louisiana Boy. That is great, and I am all for supporting my home state boys unless they play against the Saints that week, but Delhomme is done. At this point in his career, he is the equivalent of Brunell, and neither one of these oxygen thieves deserve a roster spot with the Saints.

If there’s one good thing about Jake Delhomme as a backup, it’s the fact that he doesn’t have a whole lot of mileage on his arm for a guy in his mid-30s. Not including NFL Europe, he’s only started 89 games in his entire professional career. By contrast, Drew Brees has started 127 games and he’s four years younger. As you might have guessed, the number of attempts between the two isn’t even close. The number of sacks are, though. Which is definitely a cause for concern.
