Sharper eyeing opportunity with Jets
Dan Parr, ProFootballWeekly.com Mar 12, 7:37 pm EST
There is an opening at free safety in New York following the Jets’ decision to trade Kerry Rhodes(notes) to the Cardinals for two draft picks, and free-agent Darren Sharper(notes) said he’s interested in filling the void. Sharper, who became an unrestricted free agent March 5, has yet to visit with any team as he’s recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, but he told PFW correspondent Mike Triplett, who covers the Saints for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, that he knows he would be a good fit with the Jets. The 34-year-old did not say whether the Jets have shown interest in him; he appears to be interested in speaking with any team that he deems a good fit, so the Jets are just one of several potential landing spots for Sharper. New York’s Eric Smith(notes) sits atop the depth chart at free safety for now, but the Jets are expected to bring in competition for him through free agency or the draft.

UGH!
I guess these “old” dudes gotta get paid now.
:-(
Pigs have flown! Hell has frozen over! The Saints HAVE WON the Superbowl!!
Final four rule
They can’t sign him unless they lose someone of same value which I don’t think they have. The only player of value they lost besides Rhodes is jones but they cut him so it don’t count

I was up above it. But now I'm down in it.
huh?
(anyone get the song reference?)

They can't...
pick him up because of the same rules we couldn’t be active in the UFA market… Sharper will be a Saint, or he will retire!
With the 32nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints take... The suspense is killing me!
I'm not sure...
but they are defintely playing within the same rules as us and there is no way they lost a UFA that has the same compensation the Sharper will want…

Pool was only extended a one year $1.3M contract, yet there’s no mention of him in this article whatsoever. Is 6 1/2 hours not enough time for Pro Football Weekly to update their player rosters? Kudos to NBC Sports for being on top of their game.

Pool’s signing means the Browns are down to Mike Adams and Ray Ventrone at FS. While they’re more likely to fortify the position through the draft, they’re not handcuffed like the Top 8. They also have Fujita, who could now be in the ear of Sharper. They’ve been pretty active in UFA so far and don’t have a whole lot of veteran leadership on defense, so it wouldn’t completely surprise me if they threw their names into the hat. They just traded Quinn to the Broncos and Wembley to the Raiders, for Hillis and a few draft picks. Who knows. I definitely don’t see it as a “Saints or retire” situation for Sharper just yet.

yeah...
I see where you’re coming from… I just think that with the Jets handcuffed and signing Poole, I think they are out. And I don;t think Sharper will go to the Browns (although stranger things have happened)… I think his bread is best buttered with the Saints. But to be completely honest, I wouldn’t be broken hearted if he did leave as i think a good open comp between Young, Vaughn and Jenkins in camp will have some positive results.

And didn't
Sharper play for the Packers when Holmgren (spelling) was there? I’m not positive on that and it’s too late to look it up. LOL

Wasn’t Pool a trade? That is legal.
I’m pretty sure they’ve only cut people, not lost them (yet, at least). But they can still trade, sign RFAs, and sign UFAs who were cut or who weren’t playing last year.

No.
“The NFL’s free safety wheel continues to spin this offseason. Less than a week after dealing Kerry Rhodes to Arizona — who needed to replace Antrell Rolle — the Jets found Rhodes’ replacement in free agent Brodney Pool.”

from Wikipedia
“He started all 16 games for the Browns in 2007, making 72 tackles and 2 interceptions. Pool holds the Browns’ franchise record for longest interception return (100 yards against the Baltimore Ravens on November 18, 2007)1.
After the 2009 season he became a free agent."

Wonder who they lost then. Because they are final four not final eight.

Anybody else notice?
Sharper keeps “eying opportunities” with other teams, but no teams seem to be eying him.
Maybe he should just shut up and sign the saints offer before we tell him ‘Ya better call up Tyrone…’.

Awesome reference
I love that song! “…tell him come on help you get your s***”
The more Sharper talks to the media about how the Saints aren’t treating him right, the more apt this song becomes. I was watching the new NFL Films DVD last weekend, and I wondered how likely is it that he would have the same sort of production next season as he did this last one? This past year he was out to prove himself, that he could still be valuable and make big plays. Now that he’s done that, and gotten his ring, he probably won’t be quite as hungry as before.

Hope he stays, but
I think you are probably on the money with the no motivation side of it. Seems like as the season progressed Sharper did a good job but the big hits went away.

I kinda feel bad for the guy
He worked really hard this season and probably felt like he is an asset (which he is, if only for another 2 years). Then it seems like you are unwanted and that must sting. His life is on hold right now waiting to see what happens. His passion hangs in the balance. I know business is business but it’s hard to separate when it’s the thing you care about most in life.

It wouldn't be on hold
if he would just sign our offer.
