Mocking the Draft - Saint`s Rep seeks input
Cowboy`s fan here and I`m acting as the Rep for the Saints team for the 7 rd mock on the Mocking the Draft site.
http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2010/3/13/1371725/2-7-round-results-next-one-will-be
Here is the first 2 picks for the Saints, would appreciate any feedback and suggestions going forward. At this point of the draft there are still plenty of TE`s still on the board that are tempting me for the rd 3 pick though I know LB is also a high priority.
32) New Orleans Saints - Carlos Dunlap (DE, Flordia) - We felt we needed to add depth on the D-line especially after the release of Charles Grant, Carlos Dunlap is a player we feel could have been a top 10 pick under different circumstances and feel he has tremendous upside we view him in the Mold of a Mario Williams / Julius Peppers type player. We are full aware of the character concerns that caused him to drop and feel the risk reward is great enough to make this selection.
64. New Orleans Saints - Tyson Alualu (DT, Cal) - Again we capitalize on drafting a player we feel will help upgrade our D-Line, paired with Sedrick Ellis we feel will improve our interior run defense. Hard worker and no nonsense type player we feel brings an attitude to this defense. We had him as a borderline 1rst rd pick and in fact was almost the pick at 32 so we`re thrilled to get him at 64 overall.

I don't think TE is as big of a need for us as some of the pundits think it is
Shockey is great when healthy, and when he isn’t David Thomas is extremely capable..
OLB is where you want to go here. I see Eric Norwood is gone. He would have been good if he had been around at the end of the 2nd. I’m a big fan of Dekoda Watson out of Florida State. He may be a little smaller than ideal, but he has great physical ability and was one of the stars of the combine. He is projected as a 4th round pick, so if he is around with the last pick in the 3rd I’d take a long look at him.

Agreed . . . .
. . . plus, Billy Miller is on the mend.
Seriously, there’s no reason for the Saints to spend big for another TE when Brees can make a silk purse out of any of ’em.
"Why would I even consider taking the ball out of Drew Brees’ hands?’’
Nice job, so far. I’d target either a C, an OLB or a bigger RB (Charles Scott would be ideal) with your next two picks. At this point, it doesn’t really matter in which order, though there appears to be exceptional value on board at center, in both Maurkice Pouncey and Matt Tennant.
You’re without a pick in Round 5. Whichever of the aforementioned positions you failed to address should be your top priority in Round 6, unless a intriguing QB prospect, like Dan LeFevour or John Skelton, falls. If one of those guys is there, I’d jump on him, then revisit the trickling need.
In Round 7, do whatever you want. We could still use a FS, CB or additional OL depth. If there’s a guy that can both play T and G, that sounds like the cat’s pajamas.

P.S. There’s really no need for a TE. Jordan Shipley would be superb value at the end of the 4th, if he’s still around and you’re truly stuck for a pick.

no QB
I would sign an un-drafted free-agent rather than waste a pick on a QB that will (God-willing) never play for us.
I know you already drafted a DT, but I love Lamarr Houston (DT Texas). I know I’m biased, but I think he could be a very good pro. Reminds me a lot of Leroi Glover.
We need to come away from the draft with a LB and stockpiling another CB would be fine with me too. Shipley would be a big-time luxury pick, but with his smarts, he would be a monster with Drew.

Hey guys thanks for the input
Pouncey was mentioned but he went before our rd 1pick. Am considering these guys any comments on these?
Sean Lee ILB Penn State if he stays healthy could be a real steal
Jason Worilds OLB Virginia Tech could be used as a 3rd down DE rush specialist maybe kick Dunlop inside on passing downs or keep Worilds as a OLB and rush 5, his speed would sreate havoc.
Jason Fox OT Miami (Fla.) Is Bushrod enough at LT?
Mike Williams WR Syracuse I know this is overkill but he`s a 1rst rd caliber player that could flourish in the Saint`s attack.
T.J. Ward SS Oregon even if Sharper gets resigned could this thumper be a factor for the Saints?
We definitely need to draft some LBs
With Scott Fujita going to the Browns recently, that leaves real uncertainty as to who currently on the roster can win that starting job. I’m thinking Mickey Loomis will be looking very much at the LBs this year, along with the DEs and DTs. As for OT and Bushrod, you must remember that we lost our starter in Jammal Brown to injury early last season. He’s 100% healthy again, so the job doesn’t entirely belong to Bushrod. My hunch is that Brown will beat out Bushrod, but it’s hard to tell. I’m not sure if they’ll draft an OT in the early rounds. I doubt they will when the biggest needs are still very much on the defensive side of the ball.

Not a chance in hell they draft a WR, not this year nor the next
We are so stacked up with Colston, Meach, Moore and Devery…. and Roby….. and we have Adrian Arrington and Rod Harper in the mix too.
One of these guys could be a trade bait…
Bring the wood
Also, Moore and Roby aren’t currently under contract.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
True, but I think they are hoping somebody will sign Moore away so they get an extra 2nd out of it. And I’m OK with that. I mean he’s a really good player in many ways but I think we can live without him and I’m feeling really greedy about picks for some reason.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
I agree. The number of low round and/or undrafted WRs that have flourished in this offensive system isn’t coincidental. We’re a team geared towards the pass. If Arrington continues that trend by stepping up, I have no problem turning a guy like Moore into an earlier pick that can be used to fortify another area. Hell, you could do the same thing every year. If it’s bettering the team on the whole, c’est la vie. It’s pretty much the same as when Denver was pawning off RBs left and right, despite their success behind zone blocking. Reuben Droughns, Olandis Gary, Quentin Griffin, our own Mike Bell … outside of Clinton Portis, which one of those guys have had success outside of Mile High?
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
Well Bell has had at least some success here… but you certainly still have a good point.
And I suspect Moore would have some success elsewhere as well. His route-running precision would be a great boon to a young QB who needs a reliable receiver to help him move the chains. And if we get a 2nd round pick out of it as well, even better.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
No problem with either LB. I actually view OT as a primary need, but only in terms of an upgrade to our starters. You’re past that stage now, so I wouldn’t put a whole lot of emphasis on that. We presumably have both Brown and Strief coming back. Unless it’s a versatile guy that can play multiple positions in a pinch, I wouldn’t bother. Center’s the exception. I really do think we need to focus on that area. I missed Pouncey at first glance. Tennant’s just as good.
I’m personally not very happy with Roman Harper, but he’s probably not going anywhere. Chip Vaughn and Pierson Prioleau can both play SS, so I’d drop Ward from your wishlist. Williams would be a luxury pick, even moreso than Shipley. Same approach, though. Only if the well is bone dry at premier C, OLB and big RB talent … and not before the end of the 4th. Which probably amounts to forget about it, as I doubt either will be around.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I agree on almost all counts.
Lee or Worlids would be a solid pick. Lee plays inside right now, but has played OLB a good bit at Penn State, so he could fit fairly well.
I would disagree a little on Roman Harper. He is a big hitter, and for the most part that is what strong safety’s are expected to be. His coverage skills aren’t great and he gets beat deep sometimes, but he plays the position well on the blitz and in run support. He isn’t great, but I think he still deserves his starting role.
On a note to Ziggy: Sharper is the free safety, which we tend to use more in coverage and less as a big hitter. Ward is a capable strong safety, but if Sharper doesn’t return I suspect Malcolm Jenkins will be moved into the free safety position, which is more natural for his skill set than where we have him now. It isn’t really a position that I see us drafting this year.

yeah I realized it after posting Sharper FS
big fan of Ward…ok so if Jenkins moves to FS would the need of drafting a cb be there?or draft FS and leave Jenkins at cb.
Dominique Franks CB Oklahoma
Brandon Ghee CB Wake Forest
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah CB Indiana (PA) who might be a FS
Jerome Murphy CB South Florida
Javier Arenas CB Alabama
Perrish Cox CB Oklahoma State
Major Wright FS Florida
if any last until our pick in rd 3.
Neither position is a prevalent need. If you’re going to address either, do it in the 7th and go with the better overall player. There’s no guarantee Jenkins will become a full time starter at either position. Both he and Usama Young are at least capable of playing both in a pinch, so one is no more glaring a need than the other. There will ultimately be a need for another DB, though. That’s assuming Sharper doesn’t re-sign. Regardless, they can shuffle it out until he’s out of the picture.
"I was not on the boat in question." -Darren Sharper
I agree with CP
Jenkins rarely saw playing time outside of special teams this year with the exception of a couple of games where injuries left us thin. Greer and Porter will remain the starting 2 CBs and most likely Gay will remain the nickel. If you do draft for the secondary, go for depth later rather than overpaying for someone that won’t start.

well...Jenkins got some sweet playing time
where it counted most…in the Super Bowl. And he sure made the most of it.
The Easter Bunny is a savage...
games-14… Started- 6…. Total tackles- 55… Solo- 49… Asst.- 6 ….INT- 1…pretty good seeing as (i’m picking a random team and taking their best CB…) NY giants, aaron ross’ stat line is as follows (i used his year priors stats since he was injured last year):
games- 15… Started- 15… Total tackles- 52… Solo- 46… Asst.- 6… INT- 3
pretty good for a non starting corner in his first year, while Aaron Ross (who is considered a pretty good CB) twas his sophomore year.
Jenkins
Did have a couple of Fumble Recoveries from his special teams playing time.

I still don’t think we need to draft an LB at all. Maybe we should, but we don’t need to. With the way you’ve improved the big uglies up front, the young LBs we have in-house will be better already, and they weren’t that bad before.
If there’s a complete steal available at TE in the 4th+, go for it, otherwise we’re fine. Ditto with C and OT. I’ll agree that a nice bowling ball RB would be nice, but again not critical. I would agree with looking for a FS or CB late.
But really I’d agree most with those who are saying look at maybe doing yet another DT or even DE. We really need to improve the defensive front seven most, and I’m pretty sure that improving the DL will be enough to let our existing OLB kids do a reasonably good job.
For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.
I like Dunlap at 32, but
I’m not so sure the front office does. They want high character guys, and Dunlap has had some issues with laziness and the law. Also, I like Alualu, but he’s not much of a run stuffer at DT and has a bit of a skinny frame to play NT which is the DT position we’re looking for. I could see us ticking off a 3-4 team by taking a quality NT that they wanted to slip to them. Who knows what’s gonna happen though. I’m not ruling out us drafting any position.
I wouldn't mind getting half the "love" that the Saints are willing to give Sharper...
wow, ZIGGY19
nice work on the write up…I can almost hear Payton or Loomis in my head as I read your explanation.
