New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove, a restricted free agent, will visit the Detroit Lions tonight and Tuesday, according to a league source.

The Saints would have the right to match any offer Hargrove might sign with another team. Or if they chose not to match an offer, they would receive a third-round draft pick as compensation -- Hargrove's original draft round.

Agreed. Three picks in the top 70 would be sweet.

I'm starting to get nervous here

The only common thread I can see running through the Fujita-Sharper-Hargrove business is the Saints’ front office not offering enough money. Is it just the great post-Super Bowl cash-in occurring? Or is Benson really being cheap?

It looks the team has committed 135 millions for this uncapped year so far

As per Mike DB Florio… if it is true…. there is Grant in it but I bet some contracts have been retsructured…

Don't forget...

we are going to pay Drew Brees a ton of money… plus locking up Jarhi Evans may be an expensive thing too.

With the 32nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints take... The suspense is killing me!

by tlsk1066 on Mar 15, 2010 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

I’m not so concerned about Sharper. Fujita leaving makes me wonder a little, but I can shrug that one off. Add Hargrove to it and I’m actually getting worried.

Who dat, from a cajun exiled to cowboy country.

No need for worry

He’ll be back and in a starting postion. He started his new life here in New Orleans, not just football but being clean and sober as a person.

Well let us all appreciate what PayLoo is dealing with

They are pretty much handcuffed with who they can sign. Lots of talent on this team. Lots of priorities in signing. I for one am glad they haven’t made any knee jerk reactions and signed anyone away. They have done a pretty good job of signing talent. I for one, am not getting overly nervous yet. Nothing wrong with other teams setting the market for players. And if they overpay, then that just works in our favor. I like Hargrove, and i really like Sharper. But they are not worth breaking the bank over.

For your information Viking's and Colt's fans, no matter how much you say it, you were not the better team in 2009.

Well, I'm a woman...

so I’m panicking. I hate to see the team being chipped off bit by bit. I was touched by Hargrove’s story. I’d hate to lose him.

I'm not so sure

that we can lose Hargrove. Personally I think he’s an important role player and pressure player on our front line. Not to mention he’s a very high character guy who brings much more than just production. Signing him back is very important, so what if you overpay a little bit? It’s worth it because he brings more to the team than just his skills. Keep him.

I wouldn't mind getting half the "love" that the Saints are willing to give Sharper...

If it came down to this

Paying Hargrove an extra little bit and potentially not having the cash to pay PT which option would you choose? As i said i like Hargrove. And Sharper. But the dollars have to make sense. And yes character is also an issue. But they have always seemed to go after high character guys and then also taken the chances on those who had character issues in the past (Hargrove as an example) who they felt were ready to change their path. I’d love to see everyone get paid, but i am glad we aren’t just throwing cash out like the Browns, Redskins, Raiders, Jets, etc.

The sad truth is, I don't think we HAVE the case to throw.

Winning the Superbowl has put the Benson family up there with the really big boys in the NFL. You can’t go to a banquet and bring a baloney sammich!

lol!

I was wondering what kind of case they should be throwing. A lawsuit case? A suitcase? There’s been many times I wish I could edit one of my comments after posting.

by HansDat on Mar 15, 2010 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope he comes back. I like him for one and two its just great that he’s been able to turn his life around here in the first place. But seriously, if he does come back, is he a DT or a DE? He should be a DE but we don’t know how the coaches will use him yet. And if we have to pay a lot of money and then he ends up a DT again, it’s a waste.

So if they choose to just draft his replacement, having pick #64 and 66 would be great trade ammunition if we decide we want/need to do some moving around in the draft. And if we don’t, that basically means we could grab two very strong prospects nearly back-to-back. So if we lose him, it’s really not the end of the world.

For those who can't remember the uncapped FA rules, this link's for you.

by FriarBob on Mar 15, 2010 5:16 PM CDT reply actions

Also keep in mind

We have an explosive offense. We need our D to be average to good. Great would be awesome. But it is a deep draft.

Nice story and all...

…but part of Hargrove success was, IMO, the way Williams managed his play-time. Still, he did have a nose for making very good things happen with the time he was on the field. Just not sure how much money I’d risk on him, specially since Loomis proved to be pretty good at picking guys on both lines with middle draft picks.

I worry much more about losing Pierre Thomas than Hargrove, Sharper or Fujita (even if that made my heart skip a beat).

Nah, that's just some dust in my eye....

Smith, Grant, Ellis, Presley (I like that kid) were all first rounders…..

Oopps.

Pressley was not

a first rounder. 5th rounder in ‘08, and he’s my sleeper candidate for starting opposite Sed Ellis. I noticed how well he moved against the run over his few minutes of playing time, and it was actually quite exciting. While he was originally a disruptive 3-technique, I think various injuries may have slowed him down and he’s becoming more of an anchoring NT. I’d say he’s got a solid chance to start next season.

scratch that

Pressley has always been more of a run stopper. Watch this video from college, and notice how he works off the blocks and double teams.

I like SupaFreak69

both for his story but mostly for his effort/production. I don’t really consider him as a backup based on his minutes on the field. But to go to Detroit? Talk about penthouse to outhouse! I think it’s more a smoke screen and positioning maneuver. I’m not that worried.
