Justin Fargas Visiting Saints

Finally, some news to report; it's about time. WWLTV reports that Justin Fargas, formerly of the Oakland Raiders, is visiting the Saints and their offer is based on whether or not they're thinking of matching the Eagles offer for Mike Bell.

Personally, I love the move. He won't be anything more than a third running back; He's 30 years old but still has some gas left in the tank.

Star-divide

Running back Justin Fargas could possibly be the Saints first offseason acquisition.

The eighth-year pro was in New Orleans on Tuesday night, eating dinner with Saints officials at Emeril’s in the Warehouse District, a source confirmed to Eyewitness Sports.

The visit could be tied into whether the team decides to match the Philadelphia Eagles’ contract offer with Mike Bell, which was signed Tuesday. It was Bell’s second visit this offseason after the Saints tendered the running back at the lowest possible compensation.

New Orleans has seven days to match the Eagles’ offer sheet.

In seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Fargas rushed for 3,369 yards and 10 touchdowns on 827 carries. He fumbled 10 times, losing only four.

But Fargas missed the final two games of the 2009 season with a knee injury and the Raiders cut ties with him this offseason, citing his inability to pass a physical.

Fargas, though, disputes that and he has taken visits with the Browns and Eagles so far during the free agency period.

Hell Why Not

Take the guy, he should be pretty cheap to sign. He is a quality back, nothing spectacular, but enough experience and drive to contribute in the current looks of a still “running back by committee” organization.

He has been very successful sharing carries with other backs

in his last four seasons he averages 750 yds with 4.0 avg plus 110 recieving with a 6.9 avg. Those are the only seasons where he has had significant playing time. He is much like Chester Taylor in the sense that he is a bit older but with the mileage of a back a few years his junior. As long as the knee issue isn’t an issue then the Saints would be making an upgrade at running back while also adding a veteran presence.

Now re-sign Sharper and address the defense on draft day

This is our year

Fargas was released after failing his physical. He’s got pretty good size, I’d just rather a bigger, younger, more versatile back … one that could conceivably play H-Back and replace Heath Evans at FB, when his contract is up this time next year.

WTB moar fullbacks!

A young guy who could learn from Evans would be awesome. Wendy’s did alright filling in at fullback last year, but having another actual fullback would be good. Would hate to see evans go down again, but it would be nice to have a real backup fullback. This is asking alot though as i dont believe most people find fullbacks as awesome as i do lol. our running game wasnt the same without evans, some insurance at that postion would be epic.

He wouldn't count as a UFA pick seeing how he was released by the Raiders

I don’t see the problem with signing him, he’s not a primary running back. He probably won’t slip on 3rd and goal in the Super Bowl game at the end of the 2nd quarter like Bell did.

Draft Toby Gerhart

And if we miss on him, wait until the first round of cuts and pick up one of the dozens of out-of-work, third-team running backs who are just as good as Fargas.

Really: this is not yet a problem. Why worry about it?

Agreed on all counts. Bell to the Eagles probably means P.J. Hill headed back to the practice squad soon. Grab him off waivers for a fraction of the cost. We’re no worse off.

If we get Detroit’s 3rd round pick for Hargrove, I could see them drafting Gerhart at the end of the 2nd. You could still address the defense a few picks later and really not lose anything outside of having to replace a part-time DT at some point (not necessarily in the draft).

I would say they don’t want to bring in anybody because they don’t see anybody who’s awesome enough to bother bringing in at this point.

And they also want to keep their options open for the draft. After they know who they got there, then they’ll know who they want to try to get later.

Fargas is a decent back

but there will likely be better, (younger, cheaper and more versatile) options available later on in the year.

Some people are like slinkies. They don't really serve a purpose but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

by DarrellSc on Mar 17, 2010 11:57 AM CDT reply actions

Fargas would fit

You can’t argue with adding more depth without wasting a draft pick on it. Sure, Fargas has his proven limitations, but he’s also proven to be healthy over the past few seasons (more than you can say about PT, Bell, or Reggie) and he’s not looking for a whole lot of money.

Also, I disagree that the Saints should use a high draft pick on a RB. Look at where the Saints’ RBs have come from: PT and Hamilton were undrafted; Bell was signed after he was cut by Denver; Reggie is a special case. It’s not Payton/Loomis’s style to take a RB in the draft. I’d honestly rather see the Saints draft a QB to back up Brees (specifically, Max Hall from BYU, who comes in a similar package to Brees and will be available late) and then focus on upgrading the defense and O-line. Maybe take a fullback if there’s a good one out there.

by Rocks on Mar 17, 2010 12:01 PM CDT reply actions

I think they're saying he was signed to a 1 year tender

I don’t think it means the Saints have matched the Eagles’ offer yet. Plus, the source here is Yahoo Sports, so nuff said.

Does the visit by Fargas mean that the Saints have already made up their minds to NOT keep Bell? I think it may be a strong indicator.

Fargas' knee

I started out loving this as a possibility, then I noticed he was cut due to not being able to pass a physical following a knee injury. That’s a 30 year old back with a knee injury. So now I’m saying no.

Draft a younger back. Failing that, pick up a couple late rounders or undrafted free agents and see what comes out in the wash.

not a huge fan of this pickup if it works out

I don’t really see Fargas as an upgrade over what we have at this point, even without Bell, and if we’re looking to add another back to the mix I’d rather it be a young promising player. If he does comes, he better come cheap. If they end up paying him what Bell is making I won’t be happy.

by Andrew Juge on Mar 17, 2010 12:58 PM CDT reply actions

I really think

we don’t even need another RB even if we let Bell go. Hamilton proved to be just as good a runner as Bell and he’s young with a lot of upside in my opinion. We need another true FB in my opinion as far as offense goes. Evans is a key part of our running game and can catch the ball out of the backfield as well. If we can draft or sign a you versatile FB with the potential to be as good as Evans I say pick him up.

RB is one position I believe we can get off the scrap heap… late round draft, after the draft, FA’s after the draft.

With our line and existing stable of RB’s, if you can hold onto a ball and survive a few hits and gain a few yards, you’ll be fine.

unlike… positions like LB and DE, which require more skill/awareness/instincts to be effective.

I wonder whatever became of Alley Broussard. I was hoping they’d bring him into training camp last year as a UFA. To the best of my knowledge, he has yet to be given an opportunity with anyone. A player from the Raiders has gotta be hungry for success

I’m thinking Fargas would be ecstatic about playing for a winning team with good locker room chemistry for a change. He would have to know that his window for personal success is closing fast and so would bring his very best to the new club. I’d rather keep Bell over him, but I won’t be upset if they do sign him, as long as it’s to a reasonable dollar amount.

Fargas

Wouldn’t be a bad pickup. Bell really wasn’t all that great last year, even in a limited role he declined severely down the stretch and always seemed to be injured. Not to mention his balance issues. I was once a big fan of Bell, but I don’t see why we can’t add a well proven veteran to do the same thing that Bell does, only more consistently. Anyway, there’s no guarantee Fargas would even make it past final cuts. The team is really high on Lynell Hamilton who could eventually be our H-back/fullback because of his size, running, and catching abilities, not to mention he’s an absolute ace on special teams. Bell offers less value than Hamilton, and Fargas excels in rotation. So really, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal should either way because Hamilton is bound to see more playing time next year and probably take the role of 3rd down, short yardage back.

I'm not willing

to use a draft pick on a running back. We don’t need anyone out of the draft, unless we get an athletic H-back to eventually replace Heath Evans. There’s really too many other needs on the defense, and the offensive line to go along with it. I think the plan will probably be to look in the early rounds for defensive players, likely pass rushers, and in the later rounds find a lineman and the usual 7th round gem. Loomis and Payton don’t really feel like they need to draft running backs anyway. The last RB they drafted was Antonio Pittman, and that was a wasted pick considering he’s not even in the league and he was beaten out by undrafted rookie FA Pierre Thomas. So, the only RB the Saints really would even take a shot at would be C.J. Spiller if he somehow fell to us, as a value pick of course. Other than that, according to history, I really don’t think we’ll draft a running back.

I will concur with CP’s reasoning that the history thing may mean nothing at all, but think also about the position of RB. Does it really need to be upgraded? No, it doesn’t. Does DE and LB need to be upgraded? Yes, Loomis himself said that.

by LocoSaint on Mar 18, 2010 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

From a short yardage standpoint, I’d say it definitely needs to be upgraded. Granted, that could just as easily be based on shortcomings in the OL, but since we don’t have a true power back — something teams with excellent OLs still covet — why not go that route? Speed and elusiveness will only get you so far. On top of which, Heath Evans is a journeyman 31 year old coming off a season ending injury. Sorry if I’m not completely confident in this bunch, in any given situation.

You’re also assuming Thomas and/or Bell will be back. Are you comfortable with a Bush/Hamilton rotation? Because that’s all we’re guaranteed, at this point. Further, which one of these backs — including Thomas and Bell — weren’t on the roster this time last year, when Loomis was reportedly chomping at the bit for a shot at Beanie Wells? I think there’s a need for improvement whether Bell stays or goes and I honestly believe the upper brass does, too.

Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount posted forty times of 4.53 and 4.55 at the Ducks’ pro day workout Thursday. Blount more than redeemed himself after a miscommunication led many scouts to believe he skipped out on Oregon’s first pro day last week. At 238 pounds, his forty times are impressive — down a full two-tenths from his marks at Indy. He could tempt teams into selecting him in the mid rounds as a power back.
