Will the Saints suffer a let-down?

This thought occurred to me in the context of the discussion about the home game to open the season. I assume--as do most people--that we'll be playing a fired-up, pissed-off Minnesota Vikings team out for more than points. The big question, of course, is whether or not the Saints got lucky in the NFC Championship game and beat a better team. (The big answer: no. Hell no.)

But an even bigger question is: will the Saints come out and match the best the Vikings have to offer with the best they have to offer? Or, will they suffer the sort of post-championship letdown next season that Pittsburgh suffered in 2009? It's not at all a rare phenomenon, and most commentators put it down to a lack of "hunger" to repeat.

Maybe. I don't know. But what occurred to me was this: instead of dampening their hunger for a championship, what if the Super Bowl convinced the Saints that they really are that good? Championship-good. Destroy-everything-in-their-path good? These are, after all, the Saints; and as such, they're heirs to a not-so-sterling tradition. Even though they were the sentimental favorites for much of the year, pretty much only this fan base really believed they could pull off a Super Bowl win. Did the team itself believe it? Or were they delightfully surprised when it happened?

Of course, they said all the right things afterwards. Of course, they had confidence in their abilities. But then, all they had was a belief they could win. Now they know they can.

What if that self-confidence ignites a fire under this team? You thought they were explosive before? I can see them going on a historic rampage...starting with the Vikings.

The Vikings weren’t the better team, but their offense was better in some ways than ours on that one night.

If our offense shows up this time and our defense is at least decent, I’m really going to enjoy the rematch.

After. I don’t think the Saints really need an extra dose of self-confidence in order to beat the Vikings. But it would be nice.

what if the Super Bowl convinced the Saints that they really are that good?

According to that not worth keeping (i.e. expendable) player from Berkeley Fujita, they all knew they were going to win.

Knowing it and doing it are two different things. I expect Payton to tell them the truth: They were good, they are probably better in 2010, and it’s going to be even harder to win this year since everybody will be gunning for them. It’s a long season, a really long season.

But I still expect them to prevail in a close game with the Wikings. And I’ll be there to watch.

I dont see the risk of complacency at all

They know people are going to throw the sink at them every game and that will study tapes even more… Still with Drew, Sean and Gregg and board you can only be optimistic… we won the Bowl but lets face it… both O and D played sub-optimal during the playoffs…. sure we scored points but it felt it was not like at the beginning of the season… and D delivered but you felt it was too close for comfort…

And before you give me any crap about it. My wife was watching it.

Anywho, they had snippets on Brees and Bush, when asked what was Reggie’s motivation now that he had national championships and a Superbowl his response was “MVP”.

Methinks you will see a huge change in Bush this year.

"I have seen women walk right past a TV set with a football game on and - this always amazes me - not stop to watch, even if the TV is showing replays of what we call a "good hit," which is a tackle that causes at least one major internal organ to actually fly out of a player's body."

Okay. Complacency – no. But it’s a whole lot different being the hunted vs. the hunter. There’s still a lot to be motivated to achieve. Perfect season. Back-to-back championships. Confirmation it wasn’t a fluke. Defensive improvement. Enough new players still hungary for their ring. Players who didn’t contribute in Super Bowl as much as they’d hoped. And last but no way least – new contracts.

Losing our last three regular season games is going to play an important part in how the Saints perform early this coming season.

Granted, the Cowboys loss was the only one that stung like a mo-fo but the “L” next to our last three outings should play a hugh part in deflating the “we are invincable” balloon.

More than ever, Sean Payton will have to work his magic (or in this case voodoo) to get the team’s mindset in focus. Fortunately, I think Sean is probably the best coach in the league at doing this.

Hell, I’m sure he’s doing it already!

16-0 is possible, as is 8-8, as is 4-12, as is 1-15, as is everything in between.

Do we really want to play the Vikings first?

Don’t get me wrong, i’m not afraid or think we would lose. The only problem is that it’s the first game and there’re alot of kinks to get out in the first and second games. Maybe it should be the 5th game where both teams are probably still healthy for the majority and still fresh. This way both teams get the kinks out and it would give a great monday night game. Also, it gives a little of a build up to the game. Gives you something to look forward to once the season starts. Give us the Falcons the first game which would be a highly competitive game(MNF game) and get the kinks worked out for a great game between us and the Vikings. But it’d give me something to really look forward to for the rest of the year till the season started.

Sure everyone may be a bit rusty and we might have a few Kinks to get out… but who is going to be more in synch with WR’s Drew Brees or Brett Favre… With the way Favre likes training camp and OTA’s, T Jackson may even give the Vikes a better chance.

My Major Concern

is that some Vikings players may be more interested in hitting Brees than winning the game.

With a definite rivalry brewing between the Saints and the Vikes, I highly doubt anyone will need extra motivation for this. The fact that a head to head win could effect eventual playoff spots I think would be more than enough to get everyone in gear, even without the bad blood.

by Jimbo03 on Mar 20, 2010 6:10 PM CDT reply actions

I really think this revenge thing is being overdone by the fans. I don't think it's going to be that much of a factor. The refs will make sure of that.

Plus, we think of the Vikes defense hitting our QB as if we won’t have anyone stopping them.

I understand the idea of a football player hitting another football player with the intent to do harm is a ridiculous notion as most are professionals and don’t share the kind of rabid emotion that their fans exhibit, but honestly, all it takes is one knucklehead deciding it’s a good idea, and an opening. I’m not saying it’s likely, but I’m also not ruling out the possibility. NFL players do a lot of things that rational human beings would consider idiotic.

by Jimbo03 on Mar 22, 2010 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Well I don't how it panned out

But there is somewhere on the net (to lazy to look it up now) a spot on Ray Edwards stating that after he heard that the Saints were out to actually injure Favre he felt that in the next matchup there may be some 15 yard penalties.

However, it’s a business, I highly doubt anyone would be that stupid.

Blind

I was last blinded by the light on the evening of February 7, 2010, and that was good. Becoming blind by going Japanese, not as good. It’s a matter of conserving precious bodily fluids, Mandrake. Cooking tip: use only distilled water when cooking oatmeal in order to maintain purity of essense.

I don't think the Vikings will play you at the beginning of the season

I think it would be a ratings waste. Everyone is going to watch the first game of the season anyway. Why make it Saints vs Minnesota. Personally, I think they’ll wait it out tell close to the end when (hopefully) both the Saints and Minnesota will be lining up for their play off berths. Playing a rematch then would make people more excited for the play offs and maybe even have a critical affect on one or both teams.

Just my thoughts. Personally, I can’t wait to play you guys again. Will be fun seeing how it turns out.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

This could be a ploy for the NFLN to get more subscribers.

That’s the only reason I can think of why this game wouldn’t be bumped to Sunday Night or Monday Night.
Only the people with NFLN will be able to see this game on Thursday night.

No Let Down!

the question is how many turn-overs do the Vickies commit.

You never know

But today’s game is about $$$. Yeah, we all love Drew’s leadership and the rest of the guys who all showed so much fight all year long…. Personally, I believe they can certainly be there at the end once again…..
