A couple of items on Hargrove and Sharper

Slow day... but I noticed a couple of posts on ProFootballTalk....

Schwartz is prasing Hartgrove - they havent made him an offer yet but it would look it is on the way. .. but then again the Saints could match.. but then again that third round pick....

It also reports that per ESPN Sharper won't have any team visits for at least two more weeks. Probably because he won't still pass a physical after Surgery...  I heard somebody on Nola.com, usually well informed, mentioning there is an offer from the Saintson the table for 11 millions on three years... dont know how much guaranteed...

Waiting, waiting and more waiting...

I heard the same thing...

about the Saints offer to Sharper on Kenny Wilkerson’s radio program last Thursday….

With the 32nd pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints take... The suspense is killing me!

How can he talk with all that crow in his mouth? It must have killed him to see Payton celebrating in Miami. I’m sure glad I don’t hate anybody that much. Except Lito. And Tebow.

RotoWorld.com -

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said that restricted free agent DL Anthony Hargrove would “play end on first and second down and then rush from the inside on third down” if he ends up signing with Detroit.Hargrove, who has never really lived up to his potential, visited Detroit last week but does not have an offer yet. However, it sounds like Schwartz wants Hargrove in the fold as the defensive line overhaul in Detroit continues.

RotoWorld.com -

Free agent Darren Sharper needs another week or two of rehab from his arthroscopic knee surgery before making visits, according to ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli.Pasquarelli says Sharper plans to meet with two interested teams, but that the “smart money” has him coming back to New Orleans. The 13-year-veteran will likely have to lower his asking price if he wants to return to the Super Bowl champs.

Re: that ‘third round pick’…

I’d gladly give up a third round pick for Hargrove… but all we have to do is PAY DA MAN!

Hargrove’s a great human interest story, but he’s one strike away from a lifetime ban from the NFL. On top of which, he’s not even a full-time starter. Any time you can get a Top 100 pick for a question mark that big, you’d be foolish not to jump all over it, imo.

I like the guy. He was the feel-good story of the season, but let’s not let emotion cloud our judgement.

idk

I agreed at first..but then I took a look at our last 10 3rd round picks (although they haven’t all been the 66th overall pick here it is:
Usama Young 66th
Andy Alleman 88th
Alfred Fincher 82nd
Cie Grant 86th
James Allen 82nd
Sedrick Hodge 70th
Kenny Smith 81st
Troy Davis 62nd
Brady Smith 70th
All I’m saying is that 3rd round talent is…well 3rd round talent…you get what you pay for and I think all these players were about the same caliber as Hargrove is. (backup/role player)

by GRlZZ on Mar 21, 2010 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

and yeah you could make the argument of..

this is a deeper draft class or whatever..but I’m just pointing out that we don’t have much luck with our 3rd rounders. Heck! even usama young gave up our only passing TD in the super bowl! (which we won…did anyone no that? :-)

by GRlZZ on Mar 21, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Hargrove is better than all of those players.

He’s not worth starters money though, so if Detroit goes crazy, take the pick.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

I’ll beg to differ on Brady Smith. He started 105 of the 145 games he played. Hargrove has started 19 of 72.

He’s not worth starters money because he didn’t start last year?

If he starts this year, you don’t think he’s worth “starter money”?

And, by “starter money” are you talking about “Peppers money” or “your average starting DT’s money”?

I agree he doesn’t deserve “Pro Bowl starter money”, but if he starts 10-12+ games, he deserves to be paid “average starter money”.

They won’t come into the league with two strikes hanging over their head, though.

but most will have

“character questions”, and Hargrove has obviously turned his life around. He’s worth average starter money, forget the fractions and the flawed rookie starting junk. Hargrove has proven he deserves to be on the field, and I think he’ll be out there at a reasonable price.

I wouldn't mind getting half the "love" that the Saints are willing to give Sharper...

by LocoSaint on Mar 23, 2010 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

“Turning your life around” doesn’t mean you can’t (or won’t) slip up. Obviously, it doesn’t mean you WILL either. I disagree that most rookies have “character questions” as big as Hargrove’s and would rather start with a clean slate in terms of strikes … but only if we were to lose him to the tune of a 3rd round pick or higher. In other words, I don’t think he’s a disposable player … that’s just the point where I’d consider replacing him the wiser option, ALL THINGS considered. “forget the fractions and the flawed rookie starting junk”? Nah. Forgive. Don’t “forget”.

Well, Payloo thinks he's valued at a 3rd round tender

I like to think of Hargrove as a fixer-upper project. We got him out of the trash bin when no one else would touch him for minimum salary. We cleaned him up a bit in anticipation of generating some value for him. If we get the 2nd pick in the third round for him, think about what a huge return on our minimal investment that is. It’s the same thing the eagles are doing with vick.

almost the same

not quite the same as with Vick…

They have two capable starters ahead of Vick in the rotation. If they got rid of McNabb, Colb would still be the starter over Vick.

That is… they don’t need a starting QB, so they can use Vick as a “fixer-upper project” and then “flip” his to a team that does need one.

We need starting defensive lineman. I think they wanted to bring him in as a fixer-upper and keep him if he was productive.

who is hargrove, anyway?

he came in and did what we paid him to do, with great enthusiasm. he did a great job for us, we did a great job for him. if he can get 5 mil somehwere else and we get some compensation, good for us, good for him. it is a win/win situation.
he was a feel good story for us, along with the whole US story, hell the Saints are a feel good story, so lets dont kid ourselves and think we know everything all of a sudden. we, the Saints organization have done something right one time in how many seasons? and now we know everything? get a grip guys, it aint rocket science, it is luck of the draw, win some lose some, FA, draft, whatever you want to call it, when you pick someone to play for you, it is like a box of chocolates, ya just dont have any idea what you will get. injuries, attitudes, personalities, etc have so much to do with what we end up with in the end. Look at Colston, who wuda thunk? Look at Bush? huh? wuda, shuda, maybe next yr? always something in this business, and luck has alot to do with it.
BUT, having Sean Payton as a coach, has more to do with anything than anything else we do. as long as he walks the sidelines and has Drew Brees along his side, we will win, the other players will fall in line, because, THEY want to WIN too!!!!

Enuf Said.

In how many of those last 10 drafts did we have 2 picks in the 3rd round?

That changes the drafting strategy completely. It gives us more freedom in our selection and even the possibility of trading up.

rotoworld.com:

Anthony Hargrove-DL- Saints Mar. 22 – 2:12 pm et
The Lions have yet to approach the Saints about a trade for restricted free agent DL Anthony Hargrove, according to New Orleans GM Mickey Loomis.
It’s unclear if Detroit has made Hargrove a contract offer, either, after hosting him for a visit last week. “Clearly, we want to have him back,” Loomis said. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t have made that tender.” The Saints extended Hargrove an original pick tender worth $1.226 million late last month.

Eff a trade. I guarantee whatever they offer won’t exceed the value of the 66th overall pick. What if Loomis is bluffing (i.e., they’re actually looking to move him), Detroit comes up with a reasonable offer, we sign him to the tender in order to trade him and then the Lions renege? No one else has show interest. We’d basically be stuck with him for a year. I’d much rather play hardball for now and see what the draft holds. You can always work a trade after the draft for whatever position we didn’t adequately address. Worst case scenario, they no longer want him and we haven’t filled the void. Even then, the one year tender works to our advantage, as we still may be dealing with a time bomb.

I totally agree with the first 2 sentences there.

If we’re going to trade him, accept NOTHING LESS than their third round pick.

I want him to stay because I think he will be effective for 4-5 years to come.

IMHO, the worst case scenario of keeping him would be that he’s only as effective as he was last year (ie. he doesn’t improve after being in the system for 2 off seasons) and we’ll ONLY get 5 sacks and a forced fumble for less than $1.2MM.

<sarcasm> So sad. </sarcasm>

Hargrove and Sharper

Anthony is a hard working over achiever, don’t want to see him go, but……Sharper on the other hand plain out . . . “Walks the walk”….he’s a key link who must return.
