It's been quite a while since we'd heard anything on free agent QB Daunte Culpepper. But down at the NFL owners' meetings, we got word from Alex Marvez of Fox Sports that Daunte was in the hotel lobby, and that he was networking to try and get a job for 2010.
Culpepper is clearly past his prime, but might be able to hold down the fort for a team that has all the rest of the pieces in order. Such a team is the New Orleans Saints, and the Chicago Sun-Times' Sean Jensen tweeted on Monday afternoon that Culpepper spent a "few minutes" with Saints coach Sean Payton, who apparently is a big Daunte fan, per Jensen. Not sure if he has a jacket like this one or not.
There's a need in New Orleans for a backup, so we can't rule this one out just yet. ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas had an update on the Saints' backup QB slot a week ago:

"I suspect this is a position the Saints will address at some point. This might not excite the masses, but [Mark] Brunell still could be re-signed. It's not like he's drawing interest from other teams and he knows the New Orleans offense. If Brunell isn't brought back, I'm sure the Saints will bring in a backup with some experience to provide insurance behind Brees. [Chase] Daniel is a project and nothing more than a No. 3 quarterback at this point."

How interesting

The quarterback who chased Brees to New Orleans winds up sitting on the bench behind him.

I’ve never really liked Culpepper as a starter, but purely as insurance I suspect he has more good games left in him than Brunell. But can he hold for kicks?

Culpepper’s probably the best available veteran QB out there right now, Brunell included. I personally like Kyle Boller a little more, based on his age and upside in a pass-oriented system. That being said, I’d have no problem with Culpepper as a backup.
